Can you believe it’s Issue 28 you’re about to flip through? It’s quite remarkable how quickly time moves, with the summer months having whizzed by in an exciting blur for some, and some semblance of calm for others. This past season was spent with a healthy dose of light travel, coupled with laying the foundations for a pivot we are making over here in our little world that’s grown significantly in reach since the beginning of the year. And we couldn’t be more thankful for the beautiful souls that work with us, that have reached out to us to collaborate on new projects, and that keep opening their doors to us so we can keep delivering on our promise to share stellar, stunningly curated content on all thing travel and lifestyle.

In today's rapidly evolving world, the travel industry must continuously adapt to stay relevant and competitive. Innova-

tion is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity for survival. For hospitality and travel businesses, embracing innovation is crucial to maintaining a healthy client base and so by offering unique experiences, leveraging cutting-edge technology, and responding to changing consumer preferences, businesses can differentiate themselves and attract discerning travellers.

However, savvy entrepreneurs and professionals in our sector will also know that innovation is not limited to the hospitality and travel industry. Travel journalism and social media influence also play a vital role in shaping the future of travel. We’ve had to constantly look at how we too can adopt innovative storytelling techniques utilizing emerging technologies and engaging with audiences on new platforms – all this in a bid to stay relevant. We understand our power as travel journalists and influencers and how we can inspire and educate travellers, ultimately driving demand for the industry.

At Travel Essence Magazine and as an evolving small business, innovation has been a cornerstone of our growth and success. We are learning the importance embracing digital transformation, exploring new ways to reach our audience through social media, online platforms, and potentially virtual events. You would have noticed the return of our newly refreshed newsletter – The TE Wednesday Wanderlust, a quick output we’ve put together to keep you up to speed with some of our content and where we’ve been of late.

As we continue to focus on producing high-quality content that is informative, engaging, and inspiring, the hope is that we do our part to stay ahead of the curves that lie ahead. Yours truly,

Combining A Love For Luxury Safari And Africa Through Entrepreneurship

1. VIKKI JACKSON. YOUR LOVE FOR THE CONTINENT OF AFRICA SHOWS THROUGH HOW YOU HAVE BUILT YOUR BUSINESS - MARULA HILL TRAVEL. TAKE US THROUGH YOUR JOURNEY GROWING UP, WHAT ROLE TRAVEL PLAYED IN YOUR CHILDHOOD, AND HOW YOU WOUND UP CALLING SOUTH AFRICA HOME?

Growing up in Manchester, UK, my love for travel started from a young age, thanks to our family's holidays. As a family of redheads, traditional beach holidays weren't really our thing. Instead, we opted for more adventurous escapades, road-tripping through Europe and the United States. These journeys, filled with different cultures and stunning scenery, sparked a deep love for travel. But out of all these adventures, one trip truly stands out—my first trip to South Africa. For three incredible weeks, we explored the country, saw incredible wildlife, and enjoyed its vibrant culture. I guess you could say that unbeknownst to me at the time, Africa had gotten under my skin.

Fast-forward 14 years, and I was at significant crossroads after completing my Honours Degree. I had to choose between starting my professional life in the UK or moving to South Africa to join my family. It wasn't

a tough decision—the call of Africa was too strong to resist, and I eagerly embraced the opportunity to start a new chapter 6,000km away from what I knew.

Working with IBM allowed me to travel extensively, experiencing numerous African countries' cultures. This corporate experience also broadened my horizons and equipped me with the skills and mindset needed to venture into entrepreneurship. Inspired by my travels and driven by a desire to share the magic of Africa with others, we founded Marula Hill Travel.

Our mission is simple: to promote ethical and sustainable tourism while creating unforgettable safari experiences. We're committed to respecting the environment and benefiting local communities, ensuring that travel is

more than just a journey—it's an opportunity to make a positive impact.

2. THEN VIKKI JACKSON AND SIAN LOEHRER JOINED HANDS TO EMBARK ON A JOINT TRAVEL ENTREPRENEURSHIP VENTURE MARULA HILL TRAVEL? DO GIVE US A BRIEF SUMMARY OF YOUR BUSINESS AND HOW IT FUELS YOUR PASSION FIRES AS VIKKI AND SIAN?

Neither of us comes from the travel industry. Sian was the marketing director for MARS Southern Africa, and I spent a good chunk of my career at IBM in HR and brand communications. Despite our corporate backgrounds, we both had the opportunity to enjoy luxury travel for both business and pleasure.

The appeal of travel was always there for us, and we often helped

friends, family, and colleagues plan their South African safaris, which, without us realising it at the time, was the foundation for what would become Marula Hill Travel.

Many people ponder while juggling a corporate job: “Would I still do this if I didn’t need the salary?” For us, the dream job was always to promote Africa to the rest of the world.

Launching Marula Hill Travel was the perfect blend of three of our biggest passions. We love designing bespoke travel experiences that cater to the desires of modern travellers seeking unique, authentic, and meaningful moments. We enjoy all the wonderful aspects of luxury travel—the gourmet food, fine wines, soothing massages, and incredible experiences. Plus, we get to meet amazing people, both

guests and staff, at the properties we recommend.

Lastly, and hugely important to us: showcasing Africa. We are passionate about marketing and sharing the extraordinary beauty of Africa with the world, often correcting misconceptions along the way.

Marula Hill Travel is our way of combining our love for luxury, adventure, and Africa into a business that brings joy to others while fuelling our own passions.

3. SHARE 3 QUINTESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS IN LUXURY TRAVEL THAT CATERS TO GLOBALLY CONSCIOUS TRAVELLERS IN YOUR VIEW?

Running a luxury travel business that appeals to the discerning, globally conscious traveller involves key elements. Firstly, as a business, you must aim to be always available. At Marula Hill Travel, we provide 24/7 availability. We answer the phone if a client needs to talk at 9 PM on a Sunday or 5 AM on a weekday. Being on global time is essential in this industry, and we pride ourselves on our accessibility and responsiveness.

Secondly, we try to sell what we've personally experienced. We invest in staying at lodges and destinations, ensuring we can offer first-hand advice and curate the perfect itinerary for each client. Our insights make all the difference in crafting memorable travel experiences.

Third, we stay on top of the latest trends and our guests’ preferences. The luxury travel industry is ever-evolving, and adapting our offerings to meet changing demands is crucial. We continuously update our knowledge and services to ensure our clients always get the best.

These elements are the backbone of our commitment to providing exceptional, personalised travel experiences that cater to our clients' needs and desires.

4. CAN YOU TAKE US THROUGH WHAT SORT OF CURATED EXPERIENCES MARULA HILL TRAVEL OFFERS. WHO ARE

YOUR PACKAGES TAILORED FOR AND WHAT ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS ETHOS DO YOU BELIEVE SPEAKS TO TODAY'S MODERN TRAVELLER?

At Marula Hill Travel, our approach is all about tailoring experiences to meet the unique needs of each guest. What does this mean you may ask?

We start by virtually meeting each potential guest. This isn’t just a quick chat; it’s a deep dive into understanding their needs, concerns, and desires. From there, we craft a bespoke holiday itinerary precisely aligned with their preferences. We don’t believe in onesize-fits-all packages from a catalogue.

We offer a diverse range of curated experiences that cater to a variety of interests and lifestyles:

• Treehouse Safaris: For those looking to connect with nature in a unique setting.

• Culinary Safaris: Perfect for food lovers exploring Africa’s rich culinary traditions.

• Vegan Safaris: Tailored for guests who prefer plant-based lifestyles and whose ethos is routed in animal welfare

• Authentic Tented Safaris: For a genuine, immersive safari experience.

• Wine Safaris: Ideal for wine lovers keen on discovering Africa’s wine regions.

• Conservation Safaris: For travellers passionate about wildlife conservation and sustainability.

• Water Safaris: From traditional Mokoros in Botswana to houseboats on Lake Kariba.

Our clients are always on the go and often don't have the time or insights to plan the perfect trip. They need a trusted expert because they can't spend hours researching and crafting a bespoke itinerary themselves. That's where we come in. We meticulously plan every detail to ensure their getaway is absolutely perfect and unforgettable.

Business Ethos

Our business ethos is providing personalised, high-quality experiences that resonate with today's modern travellers. We understand the value of time and strive to make every trip seamless and enjoyable. By focusing on individual needs and preferences, we deliver an exceptional travel experience that leaves our guests wanting more.

5.

WHAT

TRENDS HAVE

YOU SEEN WITH SOME OF YOUR CLIENTS VISITING AFRICA IN TERMS OF THE EXPERIENCES, DESTINATIONS AND SERVICE HALLMARKS THEY ARE LOOKING FOR? WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FEEL TRAVELLERS INTO AFRICA SHOULD BE AWARE OF AS THEY PLAN THEIR TRIPS.

Our guests are increasingly seeking immersive experiences rather than just a holiday. Take, for instance, a family visiting the Winelands of South Africa. Instead of merely touring the vineyards, they’ve hired e-bikes and cycle through the valleys, truly soaking in the destination. This kind of active engagement with the destination is becoming more popular.

We’re definitely seeing a growing trend towards sustainability among our clients. People are more conscious about protecting the planet and prefer to stay at safari lodges committed to eco-friendly practices. These include places that use solar power, recycle water, and source local ingredients for their cuisine.

On challenges Travellers Should Be Aware Of…

Africa can be perceived as an unknown and potentially unsafe destination, with worries about petty crime and personal safety. We address these concerns by organising airport meet-andgreet services, providing private road transfers, and ensuring accommodation in five-star lodges. Additionally, we avoid politically unstable countries and unsafe areas, ensuring our clients feel secure throughout their journey. Working with experts like us can help

mitigate these risks and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience when planning a trip.

Another challenge is the perceived chaos at airports, especially during arrivals and border crossings. Lengthy waits can be frustrating, but we manage our guests’ expectations upfront. Preparing them for potential delays and providing guidance on navigating these situations, we help make the process smoother.

6. LET'S CIRCLE BACK TO VIKKI AND SIAN, AND THEIR LOVE FOR SAFARI AND LUXURY TRAVEL AS A WHOLE. WHICH ARE YOUR TOP 5 AFRICA TRAVEL DESTINATIONS AND WHY?

Finally, witness the awe-inspiring sight of whales frolicking in the bays off the Cape Coast, a humbling experience that connects you with nature’s giants.

2. The Okavango Delta – Botswana

The Okavango Delta, Africa’s Garden of Eden, is one of the most stunning environments on Earth. formations, and vibrant wildlife. The ever-changing scenery and diverse landscapes make every moment of this journey a true exploration of Namibia’s natural beauty and cultural richness.

4. The Great Migration Safari - Masai Mara, Kenya

This awe-inspiring event, is accompanied by incredible Big Five game sightings. Enhance your safari experience by engaging with the local Maasai people and learning about their vibrant culture and traditions.

5. Gorilla Trekking – Rwanda

gorillas in their natural habitat is both humbling and exhilarating. Spend an hour observing these gentle giants as they go about their daily lives—mothers nurturing their young, juveniles playing, and silverbacks displaying their strength. The trek, which requires a level of fitness, is made even more enjoyable by the dramatic volcanic landscapes.

7. WHAT ROLE DO YOU THINK WILDLIFE CONSERVATION AND PEOPLE FOCUSED IMPACT WORK PLAYS IN HELPING DOCUMENT AFRICA'S COMPELLING TRAVEL EXPERIENCES.

The rise of televised conservation programmes has significantly increased public awareness about wildlife and environmental conservation. Shows that allow people to watch activity around a waterhole from the comfort of their living rooms have fostered a greater understanding and interest in

conservation efforts. This has led to more guests asking important questions about the size of game reserves, the freedom of movement for animals, and the effectiveness of anti-poaching initiatives.

The widespread availability of information on conservation has made our guests more conscientious. They want to know how wildlife is protected, the measures to combat poaching, and the overall health of the ecosystems they visit. This awareness drives a deeper appreciation for the efforts behind maintaining these natural habitats and the need to support them through responsible tourism.

There's a growing recognition that successful conservation efforts must involve local communities. Game reserves and wildlife conservation projects need the support and active participation of the surrounding communities. This understanding has led to a greater desire among our guests

to engage with local communities authentically and learn about their cultures, traditions, and ways of life.

We’ll also add that interacting with local communities gives our guests a richer, more authentic experience. They gain insight into the real impact of conservation efforts, not just on wildlife but also on communities. This experience creates a connection that transcends typical tourism, making the travel experience more meaningful and memorable.

8. TAKE US THROUGH SOME OF YOUR MOST UNIQUE EXPERIENCES, WHO THEY TARGET AND THE ROLES THAT YOU THINK INDUSTRY STAKEHOLDERS CAN PLAY IN HELPING DRIVE POSITIVE NARRATIVES ON THE DESTINATIONS, PEOPLE AND CULTURES.

One of our unique experiences is the Vegan Safari. This eco-conscious adventure is designed for travellers who prioritise ethical and sustainable travel. We target vegans, vegetarians, and eco-conscious travellers who wish to enjoy the beauty of the wild without compromising their principles. Imagine dining on gourmet plant-based cuisine while staying in luxurious, eco-friendly lodges, prioritising wildlife conservation and community support.

Our Family Safaris offer an ideal blend of excitement and education for families seeking adventure. These safaris are designed to engage children and adults alike, with activities ranging from guided game drives to interactive conservation workshops. We aim to inspire the next generation of conservationists by providing hands-on learning experiences in the heart of the African wilderness.

Photographic safaris are tai-

lored for both amateur and professional photographers looking to capture the breathtaking beauty of Africa’s wildlife and landscapes. With expert guides and photographers, guests can hone their skills and take home stunning memories.

For those looking to connect more

deeply with local cultures, our Cultural Immersion Safaris are a perfect choice. These experiences include visits to local communities, where guests can learn about traditional practices, participate in cultural ceremonies, and support local artisans by purchasing handmade crafts.

Thrill-seekers will love our Adventure Safaris, which include activities like hot air ballooning over the rolling plains, walking safaris, and canoeing down rivers. These safaris target adventurous travellers who crave adrenaline and excitement in the great outdoors.

What role do we believe industry stakeholders play in helping drive a positive narrative on Africa? Promoting Africa to international markets is crucial for its tourism industry. It's also important to help smaller agencies gain exposure at global tourism fairs, ensuring they get the spotlight they deserve. By doing so, we can showcase the diverse and rich experiences Africa has to offer to a broader audience.

9. YOUR TAKE ON WOMEN IN TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY. WE ARE SEEING THE GROWTH IN NUMBERS OF WOMEN ENTERING THE TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY WORKFORCE PARTICULARLY IN THE LUXURY SAFARI SPACE. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE TO YOUNG WOMEN CONSIDERING THIS AS A CAREER OR ENTREPRENEURSHIP OPTION?

First and foremost, put the guest experience at the heart of everything you do. Whether managing a luxury safari lodge or starting your own travel business, always think through every touchpoint and consider how to elevate the experience. These enhancements don’t always need to be grand gestures; sometimes, small, thoughtful details make all the difference between luxury and ordinary. Luxury is in the details—personalised service, attention to guest preferences, and creating unique, memorable moments.

Luxury safari travel is more than just a service; it's an emotional journey. Your goal should be to create lasting memories and connections. Avoid taking a purely transactional approach. Instead, focus on the small details that matter, like ensuring you spell a guest’s name correctly or remembering their favourite drink. These seemingly minor touches show guests they are valued and respected, which is at the core of

luxury hospitality.

Building a successful career in tourism requires empathy and excellent listening skills. Understand that every guest is unique, with their own set of expectations and desires. By truly listening to your guests and anticipating their needs, you can create a personalised experience that resonates deeply emotionally. This ability to connect emotionally with guests will set you apart and make your service unforgettable.

Tourism and hospitality can be demanding, but a strong work ethic will serve you well. Be prepared to go the extra mile for your guests, colleagues, and business. This dedication enhances the guest experience and earns you respect and recognition within the industry. Your commitment to excellence will be reflected in every aspect of your work.

Finally, be confident in pursuing your dreams. Whether you aim to climb the corporate ladder or start your own venture, believe in your abilities and vision. The tourism and hospitality industry offers many opportunities for those willing to take risks and innovate. Don’t be afraid to leave your comfort zone and carve your path!

Makokola Retreat:

A Legacy of Luxury on Lake Malawi

Makokola Retreat, a shimmering jewel on the shores of Lake Malawi, is more than just a luxury resort. It's a testament to a family's unwavering commitment to hospitality and a love affair with one of Africa’s most pristine landscapes. The retreat's story is intertwined with the history of tourism in Malawi, a narrative of passion, innovation, and a deep-rooted connection to the land.

With the blessing of a remarkable opportunity to finally discover Africa’s warm heart, a sunrise start had us drive down the long winding road from Malawi’s Zomba Mountain Plateau where my tour, courtesy of Malawi’s Tourism Authority, had begun. My dedicated hosts ensured that I was kept engaged, providing me with an array of facts with each key district we drove through as we headed towards Mangochi, a town in South Central Malawi. Mangochi, I came to understand, was home to an iconic holiday retreat for locals and international guests alike, who carried a penchant for luxurious hospitality in settings invoking an appreciation of the finer moments that life can award.

Affectionately coined by Malawi’s residents as “Club Mak” – it soon became clear as we drove through the main gate and

past the resort’s private, international airport, why I had heard so much about the family owned and managed Makokola Retreat within my first few hours of arriving in the country. About a 200-meter stretch of tarred road took us to the resort’s main entrance area, where we were ushered in by strikingly picturesque surroundings and beaming smiles that were clearly excited to have me at the location. One always recognises a warm welcome, and this one was certainly a special one. With a cooling towel in hand and a refreshing sip of fresh lemon juice infused with mint, I embraced the stunning views that lay before me while activating a mood fitting for such pristine settings…

The epitome of luxury on Lake Malawi’s shore

Spectacularly green, exceptionally manicured gardens dotted with water features and man-made ponds form the grounds on which the resort sits, with the vast expanse of Lake Malawi’s blue waters equally setting the pristine scenery that envelopes you at the location. Makokola Retreat is a brilliant showcase of a fine, family-owned hospitality establishment, that reveals spacious suites and rooms perched along the shores of Southern Lake Malawi.

Upon check in, I was whisked away to my lake-facing suite, set only a few steps away from the Presidential Villa, which I was soon to learn, often hosts Africa’s statesmen during official visits to Malawi, as well as local and international celebrities keen on carving out a few days of escapism at a destination that offers unrivalled service, while capturing the essence of African design, culture and tradition. Somewhat rested a short while after, and eager to explore the vast resort and soak up the natural beauty around me, barefoot and curious, I took a stroll to the beach bar, which would be my place of work and rest for the remainder of my first afternoon in.

Makokola Retreat is located on the palm fringed southern shore of Lake

Malawi, a setting that is beautiful almost beyond belief. Fishermen from nearby villages can be seen traversing the waters adjacent to the resort at all intervals of the day, with the sight of their traditional dhows awarding a postcard photo-opportunity of their silhouettes against the lake’s sparkling waters, also the habitat of more species of fish than that of any other body of fresh water on earth. You’ll see a host of bird and flora species all around, a reminder that you are in fact spending a few days in one of Africa’s most biodiverse regions.

Opulent accommodations that blend perfectly with nature

Nestled along the shores of Lake Malawi, Makokola Retreat offers a haven of tranquillity and sophistication. This exquisite resort is renowned for its luxurious accommodations, world-class amenities, and breathtaking natural beauty. If I were to describe what my first sense was as a guest arriving at the resort, I would emphasise how guests are greeted by a stunning blend of contemporary architecture and rustic charm.

The resort's villas and cottages are thoughtfully designed to harmonize with the surrounding landscape, featuring spacious interiors adorned with local art and warm, earthy tones that form decorative pieces made locally and with the use of as many natural, also locally sourced materials as possible. Whether you choose a standard room or opulent suite, rest assured that each accommodation is equipped with modern conveniences, including air conditioning, a private terrace or balcony, and en-suite bathrooms with luxurious amenities.

Unparalleled services and amenities to remember

Makokola Retreat offers a range of indulgent services to cater to every guest's needs. The resort's spa is a sanctuary of relaxation,

offering a variety of treatments including massages, facials, and body wraps. Experienced therapists utilize natural ingredients sourced from the local region to provide rejuvenating and soothing experiences. For those seeking a more active vacation, the resort's fitness center is equipped with state-ofthe-art equipment, allowing guests to maintain their workout routines while on holiday.

The resort's dining options are equally impressive. The main restaurant serves a delicious selection of international and local cuisine, prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Guests can enjoy their meals on the terrace, overlooking the picturesque lake and lush gardens. For a more intimate dining experience, the resort's private dining room is available for special occasions. And for me, I quite loved splitting my time between Il Lago Restaurant and Coffee Lounge by morning, and casual relaxation at the beachside pool bar I had discovered a few steps away from the private patio to my suite. Mornings were strikingly bright with a fresh breeze combatting the humid atmosphere, and evening sunsets were fit for a postcard, and a perfect way to marvel in the beauty of nature.

Activities to entice the entire family

Makokola Retreat offers a variety of activities to ensure that guests have a memorable stay. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Malawi. The resort's dive center provides opportunities for certified divers to explore the vibrant underwater world, teeming with colourful fish and coral reefs. For those seeking adventure on land, the resort can arrange guided hikes and nature walks or take on a round of golf at the Resort’s Mlambe Golf Club.

With an array of activities to choose from, I was enticed by an opportunity to enjoy a boat ride to a small island adjacent to the resort, where we would embark on an educational experience that encompassed feeding fish eagles, before taking a swim in Lake Malawi, nibbling on sumptuous treats and

toasting to the good life over a glass of prosecco. Makokola Retreat is renowned for its impeccable service, and I was one such guest who will recount how very personalised each of my excursions, relaxation and dining experiences were during my stay. The resort's friendly and attentive staff are truly dedicated to ensuring that every guest has an unforgettable experience that features personalized service and attention to detail.

A tale of legacy and passion at Makokola Retreat

At the heart of Makokola lies a legacy spanning generations. The owning family has been instrumental in shaping Malawi's tourism industry, pioneering luxury experiences in a country renowned for its natural beauty. Their vision was to create a haven where guests could immerse themselves in the tranquillity of Lake Malawi while enjoying world-class amenities and impeccable service. Makokola Retreat is the culmination of this dream.

From sourcing elements of the resort’s interiors which are a tasteful fusion of contemporary elegance and traditional

Malawian motifs, employing members from the neighbouring lakeside villages to work at the Golf Course, the Nursery and at the resort, creating opportunities for craftsman and artisans to sell their wares to guests staying at Makokola, as well as sourcing produce also grown locally for the chef’s creations, all aspects of the Makokola experience have been carefully curated by the owning family over the years, unveiling for the guests, a harmonious experience that reflects the spirit of the place and her people.

I found Makokola Retreat to be more than just a luxury destination; but rather an embodiment of the Malawian spirit, and the owning family’s passion for building a lasting legacy for generations. The warm hospitality, the breathtaking natural beauty, and the unwavering commitment to excellence create an experience that lingers long after departure. Whether you seek adventure, relaxation, or simply a chance to escape the ordinary, I can certainly attest that Makokola Retreat promises an unforgettable journey.

Floating on the Delta at Wilderness Vumbura Plains

It’s an oasis of tranquillity set in the heart of the Okavango Delta, one of Africa’s most prolific UNESCO World Heritage sites. Renowned for its breathtaking beauty and abundant wildlife, we were to discover just how much Wilderness Vumbura Plains is an unparalleled escape for those seeking respite and immersion in nature, during our 6-night, 3-camp stay across part of Wilderness’ portfolio in Botswana. With our second stop taking us across the skies over the Okavango in a 12-seater charter also operated by Wilderness, excitement was palatable and energy vibrant as we braced for yet another stay in the throngs of Botswana’s landscapes.

To book your stay at Wilderness Vumbura Plains, visit https://www. wildernessdestinations.com/africa/botswana/ okavango-delta/vumbura-plains-camp

Because Wilderness Jao had pulled out all the stops in awarding my dear friend Taku and I an experience of a lifetime, it was quite difficult to imagine how our senses could be further heightened. And elevated they were. The first steps onto the walkway leading to Vumbura Plains’ main area unveiled this luxurious camp’s harmonious blend of contemporary design and rustic charm, creating an ambiance that was both invigorating and deeply relaxing the minute we arrived.

UNPACKING THE DESIGN

The camp's design is a masterful interplay of form and function, where every element is carefully considered to enhance the guest experience. Elevated on wooden decks, the spacious flatroofed wooden-walled seemingly floating suites, offer an intimate connection with the surrounding wilderness. Large, open-air living areas seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing guests to bask in the beauty of the Delta while enjoying the comforts of home. The use of natural materials such as brown woods, turquoise and gold-coloured decorative ornaments make up the earthy tones, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that complements the camp's idyllic setting.

Refreshed quite recently, Vumbura’s various new design elements truly pay homage to nature, and how one has a unique opportunity to soak up the surrounding wilderness, somewhat being enveloped by patterns, textures and colours that bring nature inside. During the refurb, all furniture and interiors were replaced or enhanced to honour

the natural surrounds. While significant upgrades improved the camp’s structure, Vumbura’s (gentle) footprint continues to reflect the immense space of the wilderness area. Making the most of the large, airy suites – including two of the most sizeable family units in the Delta – the improved doors and windows take full advantage of the horizon-wide views.

A SENSE OF SPACE, PRIVACY AND NATURE

Privacy is paramount at Vumbura Plains. Each suite is thoughtfully positioned to ensure seclusion, providing guests with a sanctuary where they can truly unwind. A private walkway leads you to a gate to your quarters, where upon walking through, the use of space before you unveils an open plan structure with mesh and canvas walling that blurs the lines between the inside, the serene waters and marsh beyond the structure. The private plunge pools, nestled amidst the natural landscape, are an invitation to indulge in moments of pure relaxation. As you immerse yourself in the cool, refreshing private pool, you'll be captivated by the ever-changing panorama of wildlife that unfolds before you, with hippos often seen venturing in to indulge in the verdant grasses surrounding the suites.

COMMUNITY AND SUSTAINABILITY AT THE HEART OF VUMBURA PLAINS

We were to learn as we ventured on our culinary escapades that significant effort was made to ensure cohesion between the opening of the newly refurbed camp, and a revitalised menu that is now even more closely aligned with traditional local fare. Many of its scrumptious dining options we enjoyed were not only a celebration of the delicious local, seasonal ingredients of the region, but were also an ode to local traditions and Wilderness’

partnerships with the local farmers, suppliers and artisans. Ingredients are purchased locally, thereby reducing the food miles inherent in every meal, and providing neighbouring communities with an alternative revenue stream.

The camp's commitment to sustainability is also evident in every aspect of its design and operation. Solar power and energy-efficient systems minimize the camp's environmental impact, while the use of local materials and craftsmanship supports the community. This eco-conscious approach allows

guests to enjoy their stay with a clear conscience, knowing that they are contributing to the preservation of this pristine wilderness.

We also learned that the 60 000-hectare Vumbura Plains Private Wilderness Area is leased from five villages, through the Okavango Community Trust (OCT), a partnership that spans 20 successful years of impactful conservation tourism in the area. The benefits of revenue generation, job creation, and alternative sources of income are shared with its neighbouring rural stakeholders. The camp’s design

celebrates this core purpose and partnership with the OCT, with thoughtful detail and bespoke pieces applied throughout the camp to celebrate its sense of place and culture.

A FLOATING SANCTUARY ON THE DELTA

Taku and I were intentional about slowing down time to truly recalibrate from the weeks that had led to this vacation. With our minds wired for reflection and our suites providing all the elements that made it quite difficult to leave our space, to us, beyond the physical environment, Vumbura Plains offered a sanctuary for the mind and soul. The gentle rhythm of life in the Delta, punctuated by the calls of distant wildlife, created a soothing soundscape that lulls guests into a state of deep relaxation. The camp's dedicated staff was equally committed to providing exceptional service, anticipating our every need and creating a personalized experience for which Wilderness is known.

Feedback from other guests who ventured out of camp at every opportunity was that from early morning game drives to tranquil boat excursions, the activities on offer at Vumbura Plains were designed to rejuvenate and inspire. Our drive into camp, and as we explored the vast expanse of the Delta during one afternoon’s sunset game drive, we encountered a breathtaking array of wildlife, including elephants, lions basking under the shade of shrubbery, a large pack of wild dogs on a hunt and countless bird species. The opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat was truly awe-inspiring. As the days drew to a close, we returned to the camp to savour delicious meals prepared with

fresh, local ingredients. As we dined under the star-studded African sky in the company of other guests who too had come in from countries far and wide, Taku and l felt a profound sense of peace, contentment and appreciation of the opportunity to enjoy a girls’ trip that had long been talked about and finally came to life.

VUMBURA PLAINS: A MUST SAFARI EXPERIENCE

Vumbura’s prolific wildlife and varied

habitats – mopane, acacia woodland, floodplains and permanent swamp –offer guests an exciting year-round water- and land-based Delta adventure with extraordinary game viewing. Wilderness experiences include day and night drives, walks and mokoro (dugout canoes) activities, with hot-air ballooning – from April to September each year – as well as scenic helicopter flights, making Vumbura an exclusive destination for the discerning adventure-seeker.

Wilderness Vumbura Plains is more than just a place to stay; it is a transformative experience. The camp's harmonious blend of design, location, and service creates an oasis of tranquillity where guests can reconnect with nature and themselves. Whether you seek adventure or simply a chance to unwind, Vumbura Plains offers the perfect escape from the stresses of modern life.

Inside Nova Constantia Boutique Residence: A Sanctuary of Simple Sophistication

Cape Town, Africa’s Mother City, and the ultimate southernmost metropolis on the continent, remains home to some of the most inspired stately homes and manors, designed to welcome epicureans from far and wide for pockets of relaxation, fine dining and appreciation of abounding nature at each turn. Built amidst the rolling vineyards of Constantia, Nova Constantia Boutique Residence is more than just a place to stay; it's an experience. A sanctuary of simple sophistication, the villa offers an escape from the ordinary, inviting guests to indulge in a world of understated luxury and unparalleled comfort.

With beautiful blue skies to welcome me after a weeklong trek across the savannah woodlands of Sabi Sands Nature Reserve, I looked forward to touching down in a city that promises nothing but an energetic buzz, distinctive dining options, art-inspired and adventure-focused experiences for those with a zest for living the high life. My fourth stay during my 10-day circuit through boutique hotels in Cape Town’s Victoria & Albert Waterfront District and Constantia, would have me arrive at Nova Constantia Boutique Residence, a darling private villa, managed by the ever so vibrant and socially gregarious Lee Dicks.

From the moment I arrived, the allure of Nova Constantia was undeniable. The villa's architecture is a harmonious blend of contemporary design and classic elegance, with floorto-ceiling glass doors framing breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains and vineyards a further distance away, easily blurring the lines between indoors and out. The sound of the indoor water feature was music to my ears, slowing the pace of life down as I absorbed what was within my eyeshot as I met the hosting team.

Upon check in, I was taken on a quick tour around the villa, with the outdoor patio and sparkling pool beckoning for an afternoon of relaxation after a light lunch. The interiors of the suite assigned to me turned out to be a study in understated luxury, with clean lines, neutral tones accentuated by plush

turquoise and tan pillows and throws strewn across my majestic, “fit-for-a-queen” king bed. Exquisite furnishings throughout the villa certainly create a serene and inviting atmosphere for guests checking in for a night or more, and do invoke a sense of carefree rest, with panoramic views of the rolling hills beyond the property’s secure walls.

The heart of Nova Constantia

Extensive travel has revealed to me that boutique hotels can sometimes feel dated or crowded with decorative pieces placed within somewhat confined, dimly lit spaces. But at Nova Constantia, natural light beams through the heart of the villa, an openplan living area that is a spacious as it is light-filled, making the space perfect for relaxation or quiet entertainment. Plush sofas invite guests to curl up with a good book or enjoy a glass of wine while taking in the stunning views. The modern yet modest kitchen comes fully equipped with state-of-the-art appliances, serving up hearty breakfasts and a selection of gourmet sandwiches, wraps and other light bites throughout the day.

Beyond Nova Constantia’s walls

But it's not just the villa itself that makes Nova Constantia so special. The surrounding area offers a wealth of experiences to explore. I joined the many wine lovers in their element, taking tours of some of the world-renowned vineyards just a short drive away. With the knowledge that Constantia Valley is home to some of South Africa's finest wineries, opportunities to taste award-winning wines, learn about the winemaking process,

and enjoy picnics amidst the vines are abundant, and I for one would never miss out on any occasion to do so while in Cape Town.

For those seeking adventure, the Cape Peninsula is a playground of possibilities. I had previously hiked through the rugged beauty of Table Mountain National Park, and on many trips before explored the charming coastal towns of Hout Bay and Camps Bay. On this circuit, and because I

had truly embarked on peregrinations across part of South Africa, Cape Town would be my last stop to truly recuperate from a rigorous itinerary but do so in a setting that awarded a cosmopolitan mix of culture, history, and nightlife.

Why you’ll love Nova Constantia Boutique Residence

plete seclusion and tranquility. The villa's private pool and outdoor entertainment area were a perfect setting for the lazy days spent soaking up the sometimes-elusive Capetonian sun, enjoying my glasses of wine as I churned through lighter bodies of work from my laptop.

Whether you're seeking a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a retreat for a group of friends, Nova Constantia offers an unparalleled experience. It's a place where time seems to stand still, allowing guests to truly unwind and reconnect with the soul of Cape Town’s Constantia neighbourhood.

The Art of Conservation:

Spotlight on Tichaona Ncube and the magic behind his paint brush

Beneath the branches of a mango tree, Tich paints. Although the shade brings a pleasant reprieve from the heat and the bustle of life in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Tich would be happy painting anywhere. Creativity runs through his veins, manifesting in magic at the end of each brushstroke.

Tichaona Ncube was born an artist, as much as he was born an African in rural Tsholotsho, outside of Bulawayo. His landscape consisted of cattle and dust, goats and small shrubs; so this is what he drew. Self-taught, he would follow the herds and observe shapes of muscle and texture of coats, the subtle shades of browns between animal and earth. Occasionally, a kudu would wander into sight, offering different scales of size, colour and character; wildlife making its mark on his materials, as well as on Tich himself.

A move to Victoria Falls changed the artscape for Tich. Home to like-minded artists, aspiring creatives could learn and grow through shared

interests. Coming to understand that ‘iron sharpens iron”, Tich now belonged to a supportive and passionate community. The Landela Centre in the middle of town opened a space for artists to paint as well as display their works; a channel for income through locals and tourists alike.

It was here he was discovered by Art of Africa, a then new creative venture with the vision of teaching people how to paint in outdoor settings. His artwork and friendly demeanour caught the eye of owner Kim Sparrow, soon to be colleague and friend. One brushstroke at a time, Art of Africa took shape, offering a platform where participants

could be in the moment while learning a new skill.

THE VISION BEHIND ART OF AFRICA

The company encourages guests to awaken their inner artist, as well as their sense of play while observing the surrounding beauty of Victoria Falls. Whether painting in the rainforest, on the Zambezi River, at the Wild Horizons Elephant Sanctuary or in a local village, each workshop celebrates the people and places of Zimbabwe. Their latest pleinair session celebrates the works of Thomas Baines; one of the first European explorers to illustrate Victoria Falls in 1862; a dive into history through brush and paint.

Tich leads each class with step-by-step instructions of how to create your own masterpiece, in your own shade of expression.

FROM ART TO IMPACT WITH TICH

His lessons extend to a local rural school on the outskirts of town, teaching children the importance of preserving the environment. Empowering kids with creative skill, he captures young curiosity; sharing his passion for both conservation and creativity. This initiative is funded by an organisation called “Arts for Animals" coined by an American Artist called Anne London; educating school children about respect and appreciation for nature.

Over the years, Tich has mastered his own style; unique and deserving of recognition. He randomly splashes

paint onto canvas, then fills the shape with an endangered animal, painting within the limits of the lines before him. The visual result represents ‘wildlife fighting their way back to freedom from extinction’, the splashes a shadow of their former selves.

Tich has submitted three of his splash technique pieces into the annual international ‘Wildlife Artist of the Year Competition’ held by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation in London. As a finalist for two out of his three submissions, he rightfully takes his place as a world-class artist alongside some of the greatest talent across the globe.

The DSWF is a conservation organisation dedicated to the protection of endangered wildlife and their habitats. The foundation uses creativity as a

tool to inspire, educate and fundraise through art competitions, exhibitions, and auctions. ‘Conservation through creativity’ aligns with Tich’s core beliefs as an artist - using his skills to build awareness and inspire action. This is his passion and purpose when behind the easel, adding to the legacy of artists who focus on protecting endangered species, each piece giving wildlife a voice.

Beneath the branches of a Baobab tree, Tich paints. The space doubles as his outdoor gallery - works of wildlife art set between Sabi Stars and Aloes, with the backdrop of Victoria Falls Safari Lodge. If his art doesn’t lure you in, his smile will; a permanent welcome to browse his works and share a conversation. His kindness is as endless as his artistic talent, a quality that has earned him many-a-commission, as well as repeat clients.

His children climbing onto his lap marks the end of the day at his home studio. Relinquishing his paintbrush, he walks home to where he will share a traditional meal of ‘sadza’ with his family. Sleep will permeate dreams of new art techniques, international exhibitions and the subtleties between animal and earth.

Tich’s work can be found at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, The Wild Horizons Elephant Wallow and the Victoria Falls Art Gallery in the Landela Centre. You

ADVENTURES IN WILD AFRICA

The Mauritius Hitlist: Top 8 Things to See and Do in Mauritius

My recent editorial trip to Mauritius came as a surprise, activated by a quick chat with a dear friend who was representing a stunning resort as her new client. Travel is music to my soul, and has morphed from being a privilege to an absolute necessity as I endeavour to explore new destinations while sharing the incredible humans in my world, what makes our continent and surrounding islands so special…

Mauritius, a jewel in the Indian Ocean, offers a perfect blend of stunning beaches, lush landscapes, and vibrant culture. Many of my experiences over the seven days we traversed the island piqued my curiosity, not only at the cultural diversity and historical richness that influences the people on the island, but the power of geographic transformation through the forces of nature. With plenty to explore, here’s my hit list of top eight must-see and do experiences to make your Mauritian adventure unforgettable, should you find yourself planning a trip to one of the Indian Ocean’s prized touristic gems.

1. Immerse Yourself in the Beauty of Île aux Cerfs

This pristine island paradise is a short boat ride from the mainland and is spread over 87 hectares of mostly untouched land off the east coast of Mauritius. With its white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life, Île aux Cerfs is a must-visit for sun, sea, and relaxation. It is also a haven

for golfers, boasting what is arguably one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world, the Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club, an 18-hole championship golf course designed by two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer. Water sports and a host of land activities will also keep you entertained, with a wide range of restaurants on the ready for your culinary indulgence.

2. Discover the Seven Coloured Earths of Chamarel

A natural wonder, the Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths I can best describe

as a unique geological feat, and a remarkable formation featuring sand dunes in seven distinct colours. This captivating spectacle is a photographer’s dream and a must-see for any visitor to Mauritius. Walking down the winding pathways across the park grants you a front row view of volcanic eruptions that spewed molten lava across the island millions of years ago, which eventually cooled and solidified into basalt rock.

Over centuries, this rock, exposed to the hot, humid climate, including intense heat, heavy rainfall and cyclones,

broke down into iron and aluminum-rich minerals which oxidize at different rates, creating a variety of coloured oxides. The vibrant reds, purple and blue layers undulate across the park’s landscape, creating a captivating destination for lovers of nature and geographic processes alike!

3. Hike to the Summit of Le Morne Brabant

For adventure seekers, hiking to the top of Le Morne Brabant isn’t too challenging for the experienced hiker, but certainly takes some level of endurance and is a rewarding experience for all. This iconic mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the southwestern corner of the island. Reaching the summit itself requires an added climb, as the landscape is deemed a nature reserve with access restricted by the Le Morne Heritage Trust. From rocky outcrops and some steep sections that may require the use of your hands when climbing, this trek is one that you’ll find enjoyable, especially if you start before the sun starts beating down on you, or you are not intercepted by rains that fall ever so often, sometimes at several intervals in a day.

4. Explore the Black River Gorges National Park

A treat for nature lovers keen on being enchanted by cliffs, the sound of streams of water flowing, sweeping views of the escarpment below and eery tree trunks that jut out into the sky from the dense forests that form the park. Black River Gorges National Park is home to diverse flora and fauna and the spectacular Alexandra Waterfall.

This lush rainforest is the largest protected forest in Mauritius, is spread across 17,000 acres of rolling landscape and deep valleys, boasts 50 km of walking trails and is perfect for hiking, birdwatching, and experiencing the island’s natural beauty. A peaceful walk will expose you to the expanse of forest that is home to 300 species of flowering plants and nine species of birds endemic to Mauritius. You’ll also find some areas set aside for picnicking, where you can savour your packed lunch while enjoying the views that surround you.

5. Relax on the Beaches of Flicen-Flac

Flic-en-Flac is renowned for its long stretch of white sandy beach, ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. Located in the district of Black River just 15 km south of Mauritius' capital Port Louis, Flic-en-Flac is an easily accessible destination and offers plenty to get up to. From staying at lavish 5-star resorts, delighting in local cuisine served from abundant street food stalls and fancy restaurants, or experiencing a wealth of relaxed activities such as a simple leisurely stroll along the shore, unwinding with a good book as you take in the sound of the waves, it’s no wonder why it is one of the island’s most frequented locations.

ADVENTURES IN WILD AFRICA

6. Discover the Underwater World Mauritius boasts a vibrant marine ecosystem, making it a paradise for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts. While one can explore colourful coral reefs, encounter fascinating marine life, and discover hidden underwater treasures through snorkelling, diving, or even going into a submarine, there’s also a unique phenomenon that you’ll come to hear about at some point while in Mauritius.

Did you know that Mauritius and its surrounding islands, including La Reunion and

Rodrigues, are known as the Mascarene Islands and sit on an ocean shelf. Off the shore of Le Morne Brabant, you will be mesmerised by yet another unique spectacle – the Underwater Waterfalls of Mauritius, a display of sand and silt moved by the ocean’s currents to create an illusion of a waterfalls beneath the ocean’s surface. You can catch a glimpse of these “waterfalls” during a hike up Le Morne Brabant, but it’s certainly more impactful to take a flight onboard a helicopter or seaplane.

7. Visit

Pamplemousses

Botanical Garden

A haven of tropical plants and flowers,

Pamplemousses

Botanical Garden, formerly known as Sir Seewoosagur Botanical Garden, is a must-see for nature lovers, and one of the most visited attractions on the island close to PortLouis. Stroll through the lush gardens, admire the giant water lilies, and learn about the island's rich botanical heritage in a garden that grows a striking variety of tropical plants, with many of them only found in Mauritius.

8. Indulge in Mauritian Cuisine and

Culture

It was particularly insightful to learn that there are no indigenous Mauritians, but rather the people of Mauritius boast multiple heritages and influences, which of course have transcended into the religious, cuisine culture and societal norms. The island’s multi-ethnic and multilingual society forms a dynamic population that can be easily described as a "rainbow nation", founded on the successive waves of European colonisation from the French, English and Dutch in centuries past. It was under French Rule between 1715 and 1810 that slave trade took root, with colonial masters bringing slaves for forced labour from mainland Africa and Madagascar. The passage of time further witnessed traders from India and China migrating to Mauritius, with the resulting multicultural ancestry leading to shared values and cultural expressions such as festivals and fostering an understanding between people of various ethnic groups.

I scheduled in a walking tour through Port-Louis with a guide from My Moris, an organisation offering exposure to the day-to-day life of Mauritians through cultural tours and authentic historical and dining experiences. Here I enjoyed the opportunity to savour the delicious flavours of the island’s cuisine, a fusion of Indian, Chinese, French, and Creole influences. From street food to fine dining, there's something to satisfy every palate, and I certainly left the island feeling like I had travelled to different parts of the world through my Mauritian food and cultural exploration diaries!

An editorial trip of a lifetime!

The abundance of excursions I went on across the island were courtesy of Mauritius Tourism Authority, and I have them to thank for an incredibly robust itinerary that witnessed me not only explore the island, but also expe-

rience world class facilities, the island’s warm hospitality and the beauty of her people. I can safely say after my 7-day trip, that Mauritius offers an unforgettable experience for vacationers of all

ages and interests and is one destination I will certainly return to for more discovery of its plural cultures and biodiversity.

Winter getaway planning? Eco Karoo Mountain Lodge

Awaits

You are sitting around a fire, a hot drink in your hand, blanket over your legs, listening to the quiet laughter of loved ones, the night sky glistening with stars, the stresses of the world forgotten. This could be you, if you carved out time to check in for a stay at Eco Karoo Lodge in South Africa’s Free State province.

The Lodge

The Eco Karoo Lodge is a self-catering eco-friendly lodge nestled in the small, sheep farming town of Luckhoff in the Karoo, Free State. Three private ‘eco suites’ make up the lodge, accommodating four guests each. It is the perfect getaway for a group of friends, a family or even couples looking to enjoy a double-date vacation. With a less than two-hour drive from Bloemfontein or Kimberley, and only a 70km detour between Johannesburg and Cape Town, it is the perfect vacation stop for those looking for quiet and serenity in the Karoo.

“Guests can now share in the experience of this untouched solace, finding respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life,” says Estee Viljoen, the Marketing Manager for the lodge.

Each suite consists of two bedrooms, each with its own fireplace, a bathroom with an outdoor and indoor shower, plus a separate toilet stall. The suites are designed to offer panoramic views of the expansive Karoo landscape. So, from your bed or the veranda, you can be mesmerised by the mist or fog lingering over the plains during the cold winter mornings, or be bathed in the warm hues of the rising or setting sun. And if you are lucky, you might even see an antelope or two.

An Eco-Friendly Getaway

The lodge is entirely off-grid. It is powered by solar power, but also emphasises the use of natural lighting in its design, making it extremely energy efficient. From its very beginning, the lodge aimed to minimise its ecolog-

ical footprint through environmentally friendly architecture and as far as possible, by using locally sourced materials during the building process.

Even the interior decor embraces local craftsmanship, specifically designed and made by local entrepreneurs for the lodge. As Viljoen states, “the vision was to use what the Karoo has to offer.”

“With the abundance of sun and natural spring water from a nearby underground aquifer, going ‘eco’ was the obvious choice,” she adds.

Amenities & Activities

Yet, the Eco Karoo Lodge showcases that eco-friendly does not equate to sacrificing comfort.

Beyond not having to worry about loadshedding, the lodge offers other amenities such as a braai area, a swimming pool and even conferencing fa-

cilities. There is also a fire pit, enclosed by a cozy, cushioned seating area. Other shared spaces include a lounge and a kitchen with all the utilities and utensils you will need to prepare your self-catered daily meals.

And as the cooler temperatures provide a refreshing respite from the heat of summer, winter is also the perfect time to explore the lodge’s surrounding areas. Outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain bike riding and even nature walks, are more comfortable during the cold season. And with winter skies the best time for star gazing, huddling with friends and family around a fire sets the perfect scene for a dazzling display of the Milky Way.

So, rather than dreading loadshedding stages, shivering through cold winter nights in the dark, why not make this winter one to explore the Karoo instead?

Zomba Forest Lodge: Off The Grid And Making A Difference In The Green Heart Of Malawi

The lodge itself is a testament to simplicity and sustainability. With no electricity, the world slows down to a gentle rhythm dictated by the sun. Solar lamps cast a warm glow as night falls, revealing the lodge's cozy interior, with furnishings made of hues of mustards, maroons and browns in plush cushioning that provides comfort in the living room’s seating area, and a large dining room table that hosts about 12, masterfully set as an invitation for guests to dine together for their meals.

The absence of digital distractions creates a space for introspection and a profound appreciation for the natural world. Life at Zomba Forest Lodge revolves around the pace of the day. Mornings begin with the gentle chorus of birdsong, inviting guests to step outside and breathe in the fresh mountain air. The lodge's expansive gardens, a riot of colour and fragrance, offer a tranquil setting for morning meditation, yoga or a piping hot cup of filter coffee or tea. As the sun climbs higher, guests can embark on guided nature walks, discovering the hidden treasures of the surrounding forest, or taking a hike up one of Malawi’s highest peaks, summiting at a height of 2,087 metres.

Tom and Petal: Creating guest experiences through honest hospitality

Nestled so very discreetly away from the buzz of the cityscape and in the dense embrace of Zomba Mountain’s greenery, Zomba Forest Lodge is a sanctuary that invites weary souls to disconnect and reconnect with nature. This off-the-grid retreat is a labour of love for its owners, Tom and Petal, offering a unique experience that is as humbling as it is rejuvenating.

Much like being invited into a loved one’s cosy cottage, you’ll note that it’s not frills of luxury that welcome you, but rather the warmth and humble nature of the tastefully decorated spaces that form the guest house. With only 5 en-suite cosy bedrooms, the lodge has the intimacy of a home away from home.

The heart of Zomba Forest Lodge is its communal dining area, where guests gather to share stories and laughter over delicious three-course home-cooked meals. Tom and Petal's culinary skills are legendary, with dishes that showcase the best of Malawi's fresh produce. As a bonus, the food is known to be some of the best in Malawi and described on the lodge’s menu board in Tom’s unique lyrical style. Meals are enjoyed in the company of other guests, fostering a sense of camaraderie and connection, often between strangers meeting for the first time, or couples travelling together for a break away from life’s everyday hum.

Tom and Petal’s commitment to sustainability

But it is the story of Tom and Petal that truly sets Zomba Forest Lodge apart. Their passion for conservation and their commitment to the local community are evident in every aspect of their work. The couple's journey began with a dream to create a sustainable retreat that would benefit both people and the environment. Over the years, they have planted thousands of trees, restoring the forest and providing a vital habitat for wildlife.

Zomba Forest Lodge has evolved into more than just a place to stay; it is a living testament to the power of human connection with nature. By choosing to live off the grid and embracing a simpler way of life, Tom

and Petal have created a haven where guests can truly escape the stresses of modern life. As you sit on the lodge's veranda, watching the sun paint the sky in hues of orange and pink, you can't help but feel a deep sense of peace and gratitude.

There is no electricity at the lodge, and so by night, the lodge and the bedrooms are lit up with candles, paraffin lamps and solar lights, providing discrete and atmospheric illumination. While the lodge encourages guests to consider a complete digital detox, free Wi-Fi is available upon request and the lodge’s office solar system has sufficient capacity for charging guest devices if desired.

Working together with the neighbouring communities

Guests commonly ask if Zomba Forest Lodge grows its own fruits and vegetables. Tom and Petal highlight how much they try to source their fresh produce as much as possible, further explaining how the communities surrounding their lodge need the income as much as they need the vegetables. Equally, the wildlife needs the food that grows on the property more than the lodge needs the avocados or peaches on its grounds. The

one thing that is sorely lacking in the community around the lodge is income, and so the two source and buy as much produce as they can locally, also providing permaculture training to increase their economic and agricultural independence.

Passion for community to action

While guest experience is always at the forefront of their business model, conservation and community development form the bedrock of Tom and Petal’s philosophy. Over the years, the couple has worked to strengthen lodge and community relationships as they work towards an ever-increasing symbiotic relationship. The lodge cannot not operate without it benefitting the communities, neither can the lodge run without considering the environment it is nestled in.

Sustainability and sensitivity to the lodge’s surroundings led Tom and Petal to setting up their own conservation project called TREEZ: The Reforestation of the Environment and Ecosystem of Zomba (www.zombatreez.

com). Their aim is to help protect and naturally regenerate the environment’s biodiversity on the outer slopes of Zomba Plateau, while economically empowering the local communities who represent some of the poorest people on earth. The couple firmly believes in climate justice and putting communities first to ensure that the conservation efforts last. Guests are more than welcome to come and visit the project, spend the day exploring their work and maybe trying out some local cuisine at the same time.

Community visits, local football matches with their very own sponsored teams, special interest weekends, or the sheer blissful enjoyment of the ultimate in peaceful tranquillity in the most superlative blending of the basic natural beauties of environment with those little luxuries of life are some of the elements that make it they a stay at Zomba Forest Lodge so memorable. Being off-grid equally allows guests to enjoy a simpler, quieter and more peaceful way of life, an opportunity to connect with others on a deeper level, even if for only a couple of days. This in turn is a real boost to their well-being and happiness.

Creating the ultimate in humble guest experiences

Every visitor to the lodge is different, and every visitor has individual needs, hopes and expectations to be fulfilled during their stay. With Tom and Petal’s hands-on hospitality and fine-tuning of the smallest details, the couple is keen on listening to their guests and ensure that their desires are met.

Guided walks for bird or flower/orchid lovers, all-action adventures exploring the grandeur of the plateau in all its facets; to gentle, carefully selected scenic hikes and picnics for all levels of fitness, or personal tours of historic Zomba town and its vibrant market; the lodge offers it all and more. Joy in the lodge staff’s work is reflected in the joy of its customers. The pleasure that guests take from their stay at Zomba Forest Lodge is what feeds the owners’ desire to please. This drive is a cornerstone of Tom and

THE WANDERLUST WITHIN

Towering views amidst honest hospitality at Shongwe Look Out

Situated in the heart of suburban Victoria Falls, Shongwe Look Out, and the adult’s only Shongwe Oasis, have in recent years garnered acclaim as one of the city’s most popular guest lodges for local and international guests alike. The family owned and managed boutique lodge offers an intimate and luxurious experience for travellers seeking a unique escape, with its prime location overlooking the majestic Victoria Falls from the imposing “Lookout Tower” after which the lodge is named.

Opened right before the global pandemic in 2019, and today having not only survived the challenges of that era but gone on to reach award-winning status, Shongwe Look Out’s secluded setting amidst lush gardens and indigenous trees of Victoria Falls, creates a serene ambiance far from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Owned and managed by Zimbabwean-born Jamie Henson and his wife from New Zealand, the couple took advantage of the lockdown season to curate an experience and develop a product that would witness their lodge concept becoming a vibrant addition to the town’s emerging boutique hospitality landscape.

“We were looking for a chance to bring something different to Victoria Falls. We wanted our guests to experience what we got a glimpse of in New Zealand – lodges that provide first class décor, food and service,” says Jamie.

“We really felt that Shongwe Lookout would give us that opportunity, and it has. The designer, Amanda West, exceeded our expectations in every regard, and we still get guests commenting on just how beautiful the lodge is,” said Jamie when Travel Essence Magazine first spoke to him as far back as 2020.

Today, with growth and the subsequent expansion that later introduced Shongwe Oasis, the adjacent lodge that caters to adults only, one can see the successes that came as a result of intentional effort in preserving the aesthetic design, service excellence, and elevating Shongwe’s garden to enhance the resident chef’s culinary creations. Each of Shongwe’s spacious rooms is thoughtfully designed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings and lush landscaping, featuring modern amenities while maintaining a rus-

tic charm. The patios in front of each room equally award guests the opportunity to dart between the confines of their own space, while seamlessly absorbing the quiet energy the lodge invokes.

A quiet getaway haven for couples

For couples seeking a romantic getaway, both Shongwe Look Out and neighbouring Shongwe Oasis are a haven of tranquility and intimacy. The lodge's secluded setting, coupled with its luxurious amenities, creates a perfect atmosphere for relaxation and rejuvenation. Couples can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner at the main terrace doubling up as an al fresco style restaurant area, or indulge in spa treatments at Mvula Spa, the first high-end Spa to open in Victoria Falls, offering luxurious treatments with an African twist. If it is pure relaxation they are after, guests can simply bask in the luxury of being unrushed by spending quality time together amidst the property’s stunning natural surroundings.

Dreamy sunset from an iconic look out deck

One of the most captivating features of Shongwe Look Out is its exclusive access to a private viewing point overlooking the Victoria Falls. Guests can enjoy uninterrupted views of the majestic waterfall, the spray mist, and the rainbow that often forms in the afternoon. This vantage point offers a truly unforgettable experience, allowing visitors to appreciate the sheer power and beauty of one of the world's natural wonders. To ensure guests do not miss a single moment of those famous African sunsets, a dumbwaiter connected to a pulley system brings a steady supply of drinks up and down the three-story tower with the

pull of a chord without missing the magical sunsets for which Zimbabwean skies are known.

But there’s more about town…

The lodge's popularity among tourists can be attributed to its combination of luxury, convenience, and breathtaking views. Its proximity to the Victoria Falls National Park makes it an ideal base for exploring the area's attractions, including the world’s largest curtain of falling water, the mighty Victoria Falls, the Devil's Pool on Livingstone Island on the Zambia side of the Zambezi River, going wine tasting or art experiences about town.

Victoria Falls offers a wide range of activities for adventure seekers and nature lovers. Visitors can also take a thrilling white-water rafting trip on the Zambezi River, go on a guided safari in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, or take a scenic helicopter flight over the falls. For those who prefer a more leisurely experience, there are opportunities for bird watching, fishing, and sunset cruises.

In addition to its natural beauty and adventure activities, Victoria Falls also offers a vibrant cultural scene. Visitors

can explore the local markets, learn about the history and traditions of the Tonga people, or enjoy live music and entertainment at the various bars and restaurants. Whatever your preference, the lodge's staff is knowledgeable and helpful, providing personalized recommendations and arranging activities to suit guests' interests.

Whether you are seeking adventure, relaxation, or a romantic escape, Shongwe Look Out offers an unforgettable experience in the heart of Victoria Falls. With its stunning location, luxurious accommodations, and personalized service, this boutique lodge is the perfect choice for travellers who appreciate honest hospitality that is delivered with a passion for creating memorable experiences for all.

Magical Morocco

Fresh off my flight into Fez, I fell instantly in love with Morocco. Its bustling souks, ancient medinas and fortified kasbahs, its rugged mountains, barren deserts and golden beaches. As I would soon discover, Morocco is a country of dazzling diversity, a rainbow of colours, an orchestra of sounds, and a symphony of smells.

Fez is Morocco’s oldest imperial city and time seems to stand still here.

The high-walled medina is the most complete medieval city in the Arab world and its tangle of over 9,000 narrow alleyways houses a jumble of souks, riads, artisan workshops, leather tanneries, mosques, and palaces, many of which are more than 1,000 years old. With so much history, it should come as no surprise that the dynamic Fez medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I travel with my taste buds, so for me, the highlight of Fez was its food. This is Morocco’s undisputed food capital. The market stalls are laden with fresh local produce, the street food is incredible, and the dining options are endless, from tiny tea medina shops to elegant rooftop restaurants. I took a food tour of the medina and ate my way through fresh local breads, sheep and goat cheeses, a thousand varieties of olives, and harira soup made from chickpeas, herbs and spices. I drew the line at snail soup and boiled sheep’s head, but did round it all off with some delicious chebakia, a deep-fried dough, coated with sesame seeds and honey.

I spent days exploring the medina - the Kairaouine Mosque, the world’s oldest continuously operating university, the intricately designed Bou Inania Madrasa, the pungent leather tanneries, the Royal Palaces, the tiny local bakeries, and the peace and calm of the Jnan Sbil Gardens.

By night I retired to the Palais de Fes Dar Tazi, just a few steps from the medina. Three interlinked palaces, parts of which date from the 14th century, amalgamated into one glorious building, that looks out over the old

medina. The hotel’s rooftop restaurant serves meals that pay homage to the culinary heritage of Morocco, including an incredible pigeon pastilla, a delicacy dating back to the 15th century, that is made of filo pastry, stuffed with rich, tender pigeon meat, aromatic spices and lightly scrambled egg and finished with a sprinkling of icing sugar and cinnamon.

In somewhat of a food coma, I left Fez behind and flew to Marrakech, located north of the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. The bustling city of Marrakesh needs no introduction, it’s probably the best-known city in all of Morocco. Its ancient medina is a maze of narrow streets, with the Djemaa El Fna, arguably Africa’s most famous square, at its heart. By day, the square is just a big open space, with a handful of snake charmers, monkey wranglers and some slightly menacing ‘tooth pullers’, who wield fearsome pliers and offer to extract the teeth of any sufferer of toothache. It’s late in the afternoon when the square really comes to life. People assemble for an early evening promenade, and the square gradually fills up, until it becomes a somewhat overwhelming cacophony of storytellers, acrobats, musicians and entertainers; each one trying to get your attention and separate you from some of your holiday spending money.

Leaving the hectic square behind, I wandered through the souk. Marrakesh would satisfy even the most insatiable of shopaholics. The labyrinthine passageways are filled with everything from aromatic spices to leather babouches (slippers) and carpets. The main thoroughfares, such as Souq Semmarine, are dedicated to tourist trinkets, but when I wandered off the main paths I found the best shopping and the best prices.

Tired from my explorations, I decided it was time for that quintessential of Moroccan experiences, a visit to the hammam. Most Moroccans will visit a hammam (steam bath) weekly, for a deep cleaning gommage (scrub). Every neighbourhood has a hammam

and they come in all shapes, sizes and levels of luxury, from the no-frills public bathhouses to the higher-price private hammams in fancy hotels. Fortunately for me, my hotel, the gorgeous Le Farnatchi, a luxury riad in the heart of the Marrakech medina, had an award-winning hammam and spa, so I booked myself in. What followed was a wonderful full-body traditional scrub, followed by an aromatic seven-plant ghassoul (mask) and a gentle massage with rosewater. I left feeling pampered, relaxed, squeaky clean and with baby-soft skin.

Less than an hour's drive from Marrakesh is the Agafay Desert. Not many travellers seem to know about the Agafay Desert, just 30km from Marrakech. It’s a stone desert, so no rolling sand dunes here, but what you will find is moonlike scenery, stunning views of the Atlas Mountains, all the seclusion you could wish for, and a taste of Moroccan desert life. We’d decided on some glamping and Inara Camp didn’t disappoint. Luxurious ‘tents’, incredible dining experiences, and panoramic views out over the desert.

We filled our days with horse, e-bike and camel rides through the desert. My horse was clearly expecting a rider with a bit more skill than I could muster, the

e-bikes though were the perfect combination of speed and only a modicum of effort, and the camels carried us out into the desert for a decadent lunch, where we dined in style under a billowing canvas awning, with not another soul to be seen for miles.

Always on the horizon while we were in the desert, were the shadowy silhouettes of the Atlas Mountains. So after a few days of relaxing, we decided it was time to get up close and into them. The Atlas Mountains, home to some of North Africa’s most remote villages, are a hiker’s paradise and run diagonally across the country for around 1,000km. We headed to Imlil in the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains, to Kasbah du Toubkal. Once the home of a feudal caïd (local baron) Kasbah do Toubkal is now a haven of Berber hospitality and the perfect jumping-off point for a few days of trekking in the

mountains.

Hiking between, and sleeping in, remote Amazigh (Berber) villages, we passed through isolated valleys, following centuries-old trails. We met local people and saw the devastating damage that had been done to the area by an earthquake, less than 9 months previously; levelling tiny mountain hamlets, destroying homes and killing thousands. Yet, despite the devastation, everywhere we walked, we were welcomed with waves and smiles.

After our days in the mountains, we limped, dusty and dirty to the door of Olinto, a luxury retreat in the Ouirgane Valley. The doors opened to admit us to the most incredible of secret gardens - meandering stone pathways, abundant flower beds, wrought-iron seats under elaborate pergolas of wisteria and jasmine, groves of silvery-green olive trees. The brainchild

of Prince Fabrizio Ruspoli di Poggio Suasa, with only nine private guest pavilions, Olinto is a retreat like no other – a place for ultra-privacy, peace and discreet luxury. Sundowners on green-glazed roof terraces, breakfasts under the pergola, swimming in the jade-coloured pool, and every meal a masterpiece of local flavours and seasonal ingredients.

Crossing to the southern side of the Atlas Mountains, our next destination was the Skoura oasis and the 150-year-old, impeccably restored Dar Ahlam, in the UNESCO-protected palmeraie (palm grove). The champagne-coloured kasbah was a haven of manicured lawns and fragrant almond blossoms, that more than lived up to its Arabic translation of ‘House of Dreams’. Leisurely lunches in the garden, rooftop breakfasts and exotic, lantern-lit dinners. We explored the

palmeraie, and under the canopy of palms, discovered a patchwork of plots, where farmers toiled, growing olives, pomegranates, almonds, apricots and figs, watered by an ingenious, centuries-old khettara (underground irrigation system) of canals, levers and locks.

With the last of our days in Morocco fast approaching, we flew to the northern port of Tangier, Morocco’s third largest city, and with a souk that’s over 700 years old. Located on the northernmost tip of Africa, with a dazzling, whitewashed, hillside medina overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier is just 14km across the water from Spain.

Founded in the 5th century, Tangier is a hustling, bustling blend of cultures that has been influenced by many peoples throughout its history. Jews, Muslims, and Christians coexisted here for decades, and Spanish was the common tongue - a colourful history of spies, outlaws, outcasts, and bohemians, with decades worth of writers, pop stars and eccentrics flocking to the city’s more than 800 cafes.

I walked the whitewashed, hillside medina with its higgledy-piggledy maze of narrow streets and small squares. I explored the Grand Socco and the Petit Socco markets, along the crowded streets, with their aroma of spices, shopped for jewel-coloured tea glasses, took strolls along the corniche, ate fresh seafood at beachside restaurants and made small talk with the locals. At night I retired to Villa Augustine, in Tangier’s Marshan district, with its stylish interiors created by designer and hotelier Willem Smit,

and spent my final evenings in Morocco looking out over sweeping rooftop sea views.

Morocco with its enchanting blend of history, architecture, culture and cuisine, would take weeks, months or even years to properly explore. Whether trekking in the mountains, wandering through the medinas, or experiencing the unique landscapes of the desert, Morocco captivates at every turn and is a place I’m longing to return to.

Eswatini’s Umhlanga Reed Dance In Pictures

A collision of colour and culture

Eswatini’s Umhlanga Reed Dance, a 6-day vibrant and culturally significant event, is a cornerstone of Swazi tradition. Held annually in the Kingdom of Eswatini, this festival is a testament to the nation's rich heritage, celebrating womanhood, purity, and the bond between the king and his people. It is also an experience that one must consider aligning one’s calendars with, should a trip to this little Kingdom be on the cards.

There is no question that Africa, a continent rich in history, diversity, and culture, is home to numerous festivals that offer a glimpse into its vibrant heritage. These celebrations, often characterized by colorful displays, rhythmic music, and intricate dances, are not merely joyous occasions but also serve as important cultural symbols.

Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, is a landlocked country located in southern Africa and boasts varied landscapes across a nation that is fairly small in size. It is also a hidden gem for cultural tourism. Here, visitors can not only immerse themselves in pristine landscapes, diverse wildlife, and rich heritage displays in museums alike, but Eswatini makes for an ideal destination for travelers seeking authentic experiences that coalesce the diversity of people, nature, and rich storytelling.

A little about the Umhlanga Reed Dance

It can be succinctly summarized as a collision of colour and culture. Taking place towards the end of August into the first week of September, the Umhlanga Reed Dance is just one of many cultural events that visitors can add to their list of must-experiences when in Eswatini and remains a remarkable example of the significance and beauty of African cultural traditions. It is a vibrant spectacle and showstopping parade that involves

thousands of young women dressed in traditional attire, carrying long reeds to the royal kraal, the reeds of which are a symbol of purity, virginity, and fertility, reflecting the importance of these qualities in Swazi culture. In a dazzling kaleidoscope of colour

and texture, you will witness the stomping, swinging, and swaying of young women and little girls, all chanting to ululating, rattling anklets, high pitched voices and the sound of what sound like battle cries. Except this parading it not on account of acrimo-

ny, but rather in celebration of tradition. Warrior escorts carrying knob sticks and clad in colorful patterned cloth and animal hides accompany the maidens, standing ready to carry out their seemingly protective duties as part of this fare.

The Reed Dance is also a time for young women to display their beauty and grace, and in a sense, is deemed to serve as a rite of passage into adulthood. The ritual of presenting reeds to the king is a symbolic act of loyalty and respect, reinforcing the bond between the monarchy and the people, a relationship that has been central to Swazi society for centuries. The festival has been equally celebrated for centuries, and it is believed to have originated as a way for the king to choose his next wife. Although the practice of choosing wives through the Reed Dance has changed over time, the festival remains a significant cultural event such that it can be found on the calendar of global, culture inspired festivals and events.

Blending culture and tourism

While the Reed Dance Festival is primarily a celebration of Swazi culture, it has over the years evolved into a pop-

ular tourist attraction. Visitors from around the world come to witness this unique event which offers a glimpse into the traditions and customs of the Swazi people, providing a memorable and authentic experience. And in addition to the main event, the Umhlanga Reed Dance also includes various activities such as traditional dances, storytelling, and craft demonstrations, awarding tourist an opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture and gain a deeper understanding of the Swazi people.

While the full spectacle is not accessible to all, tourists will be delighted to note that The Eswatini Tourism Authority has a Tourist Information Centre set up within the Eludzidzini Royal Residence to assist with information relating the significance of the event. The general public and tourists are able to access the arena, Tourism Information Centre (Swazi huts) and the Marquee which one can pop into for a meal. Non-resident visitors, on the other hand, are not permitted to wander about the Royal Residence freely but can arrange to do so while accompanied by a local tour guide.
