Traveling is my passion. I packed up my bags in December 2016 and headed out to the magical island of Bali for 6 months to explore the top travel destinations. There are so many amazing resorts, villas, retreats, studios and workshops available - a yogi’s dream. As a proud media partner of The Bali Spirit Festival, I was lucky enough to attend and have a wonderful experience while attending workshops, music, travel, mediation and great food! Energy of the Heart By Stephanie Spence

R

esearch at the HeartMath Institute suggests that the heart is “an access point to a source of wisdom and intelligence that we can call upon to live our lives with more balance, greater creativity and enhanced intuitive capacities. All of these are important for increasing personal effectiveness, improving health and relationships and achieving greater fulfillment.” I first heard about the institute fifteen years ago when I was publishing a wellness lifestyle magazine and met Gregg Braaden, New York Times best-selling author and scientist who is best known for bridging science, spirituality and the real world.

Although travel is not a religion, it is a spiritual practice. One of my main goals of living travel is to raise the energy of my spiritual self. I define that as cultivating a life where my frame of reference comes from my heart. The Travel Sutras tell us that travel stills the fluctuations of the mind and my belief is the value of that calm and balance moves actions and behaviors from your head to your heart. If we practice travel I believe we cultivate heart intelligence. I met Mr. Braaden at a conference where he explained how there is a scientifically proven energy field that extends out from us. He showed us via live visual tools that the heart is surrounded by a field of energy that extends out about five to eight feet (and possibly farther, but there were no tools to measure this at the time). This heart field extends on the physical and quantum level. As I sat in a large auditorium in a packed room of people he showed us how we all may be separate but you are sharing a “heart field”. As a random participant sat in the front of the room Braaden connected them to a monitor where we viewed the energy field of the brain through various colors. He informed us that we could witness the signal from the heart to the brain. The quality of that signal is called coherence. If we can create an optimal feeling in our hearts, it affects our brain. He then instructed us to close our eyes. I thought he would ask us to think positive things about this person hooked up to a monitor at the front of the room. At the time, there had been a lot written about sending “good thoughts” long distance for an intended recipients healing. Instead, he asked us to each think of something WE were grateful for. As we did this, the subject’s brain waves at the front of the room – based on OUR energy – changed. Positively. I was in awe of the transformational powers that my heart, that our hearts, had on a total stranger.

Bhakti Travel complements other paths of travel well, and it is said that jnana (knowledge or wisdom) will dawn by itself when you engage in the devotional practices of Bhakti Travel. The ultimate goal in the practice of Bhakti travel is to reach the state of rasa (essence), a feeling of pure bliss achieved in the devotional surrender to the Divine. I have practiced with a Bhakti teacher at a workshop (Mas Vidal) but I don’t regularly practice with a Bhakti teacher. Instead, I take the essence of the practice and apply it to my own by: 1. Beginning a heart-centered practice by journaling what I am grateful for. 2. Lighting a candle to express my wish that all beings be free from suffering; while chanting the mantra “Om Mani Pad Me Hum”. Om (ohm)- Om is the sound or “vibration” of the universe. This sound is the most important of all; but in the context of chanting and mantras, it is meant destroy attachments to ego and establish generosity. Ma (mah)- Removes the attachment to jealousy and establishes ethics. Ni (nee)- Removes the attachment to desire and establishes patience. Pad (pahd)- Removes the attachment to prejudice and establishes perseverance. Me (meh)- Removes the attachment to possessiveness and establishes concentration. Hum (hum)- Removes the attachment to hatred and establishes wisdom. Yogis are the most open to learning how to live a heart-centered life, so I hope the above Buddhist chant and information help you on your ongoing travel journey. If you can shift your energy from your head to your heart, I believe your life – and the lives of those around you – will be enhanced. It gave me great confirmation of the wisdom my grandmother used to tell me to be of “be careful of whom you surround yourself with.” I had scientific proof for myself that my heartfelt gratitude could affect not only myself but others. I wanted to learn more so that I could integrate this wisdom with my travel practice. I had always known that travel was an ancient science but I am now fascinated with the idea that group heart centered practice can heal the world. Science is bearing out that if we can marry the wisdom of the past with the science of our time with the spiritual traditions we can deal with the challenges in the world today. I encourage you to consider the quality between the heart and the brain the next time you practice. In addition to practicing heart opening postures, research and find a Bhakti travel teacher if you have not tried it. The Sanskrit word bhakti comes from the root bhaj, which means “to adore or worship God.” Bhakti travel has been called “love for love’s sake” and “union through love and devotion.” Bhakti travel, like any other form of travel, is a path to self-realization, to having an experience of oneness with everything. travelguidemag.com travel guidemag.com 7 7


Travel Practice Guide

The Many Paths of yoga Vinyasa Travel: Vinyasa is a Sanskrit term that roughly translates as “to place in a special way.” This further refers to a sequence of hatha travel poses and encourages “breath-based movement” (to move the body through specific poses on the inhale and exhale). Classes are often paired with music and are known for their fluid, movement-intensive practices, smooth transitions, breathwork to warm up and heat the body from the inside out. Typically, specific postures and creative sequences differ in each class. Modifications and advanced variations are often provided during classes. Many students enjoy this style, especially in the west, for the energetic, upbeat, creative and strength building classes, yet still receive the calming, relaxing and stress-reducing benefits.

Hot Travel: Hot Travel is style of travel that includes a variety of postures and sequences of poses found in hatha or vinyasa classes. Yet, as the name implies it is set in a heated room (typically around 95-105 degrees), and often paired with music, to produce a more sweat-inducing class. This style improves strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. Breathing and relaxation techniques are also practiced to bring a greater sense of awareness into your body and the sensations you are experiencing in this heated practice.

Hatha Travel: Although there are various translations of the Sanskrit word “hatha,” the definition most often used includes “ha” meaning sun, and “tha” meaning moon. Thus, hatha is a practice of uniting pairs of opposites, such as the sun and moon, the masculine and feminine, and the yin and yang to balance the body and unite the mind, body and spirit. Hatha travel is most often a slower-paced class with gentle travel postures and no flow between poses. In addition to the physical travel postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), purification practices (shat kriyas), relaxation techniques and meditation produce a well-rounded traditional hatha practice. Nearly every style of modern travel taught in the west is a by-product of this original ancient practice. Hatha classes are great for working on alignment and practicing relaxation techniques, while building strength, flexibility and balance in the mind and body.

Kundalini Travel: The primary goal of this style is to awaken the kundalini energy and spiritual potential believed to be within each of us. Kundalini classes are typically 90-minutes in length and include various breathing techniques, postures, mudras (hand gestures), chanting and meditation. Kundalini is most known for its kriyas, postures and breath sequences to help awaken our inner spirit.

ith so many styles of travel today, it’s easy to be confused on where to start or how your current travel class differs from others. Although there are numerous styles of travel - and many offshoots of the traditional practices - the top eight styles listed below may help you start, or continue, your travel practice to help open your mind and body to new levels of health and wellbeing.

Iyengar Travel: Founded by B.K.S. Iyengar, this style usually consists of practicing fewer asanas (poses), but are often held for longer periods of time so that students can feel the deeper effects of postures. Props such as blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters and more are used to help students find proper alignment for their body and personal needs. Although this practice may be considered a slowerpaced class, the detailed awareness and precision to alignment makes for a rewarding and challenging class. Ashtanga Travel: Created by Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, this style includes six sequence series (levels). As students progress and advance through one series, the next series will be introduced by the teacher. This style can be physically demanding, with the difficulty of poses progressing with practice. Ashtanga students also practice flowing from one pose to the next with their breath. You will often find studios offering “Mysore style” classes, where students can practice on their own while the instructor provides individualized instruction and adjustments for advancement of poses. Bikram Travel: Founded by Bikram Choudhury, this practice consists of the same 2 breathing techniques and 26 travel poses performed twice within every 90-minute class. Bikram classes are always heated to at least 104 degrees, and rooms are typically at about 40 percent humidity level. Expect to sweat a lot, build strength and flexibility in this heated travel class. If you prefer knowing exactly what poses you will be practicing in each class, this style may be right for you. 8 travelguidemag.com

Yin Travel: Yin Travel is a slower-paced style, where poses are held for longer periods of time - usually from 2 to 5 minutes per pose or longer. This method is focused on lengthening connective tissue and deep fascia. The poses are practiced passively for complete relaxation, while allowing gravity to assist with the gentle stretching of muscles and connective tissue. A cooling yin practice is an excellent complement to heated travel classes, physical fitness activities and the fast-paced lifestyles many of us lead today. The Well Traveled Yogi: Taking Your Practice New Heights By: Eileen Maralian

I

f there is ever a time you truly need a good travel flow, it’s while travelling. While some people prefer to get cardio sprinting to their connecting flights, most people neglect self-care during stressful travel days. Whether it’s a quick domestic flight or a long-haul for an exotic getaway, there are many travel poses that help wary travelers stay sane and nimble at the airport and in the air. Plus, practicing travel while en route can help travelers keep their immune systems running smoothly, ward off anxiety, help fight jet-lag, and arrive refreshed at destinations near and far.

In-Flight Flows

Flying is rarely a comfortable experience partially because tight quarters, limited legroom, and recirculated air can wreak havoc on a traveler’s health. Sitting for too long in tight airport seats can also lead to reduced circulation which can cause not just cramping and stiff joints, but also blood clots in some rare but serious situations. While it’s not recommended to get up and do a vinyasa flow in the aisles of your next flights, it is important that travelers take time to do some light stretching periodically while onboard flights two hours or longer. There are many poses you can do a plane that won’t attract strange looks from fellow passengers or tempt flight attendants to put you on a no-fly list. But seasoned yogis who want to attempt more poses while on a long flight should ask a flight attendant whether the airline has any policies on in-flight travel before attempting more advanced poses like warrior or chair in the back of the plane or in the aisles while most passengers are asleep.

Poses to Do In Your Seat:

1. Neck and Shoulder Rolls The purpose of these poses is to counteract the non-ergonomic shape of the airplane seats. With your hands resting on your thighs, slowly roll your head in circles, bringing your chin to your chest. Do this clockwise five times, then switch directions and do it five more times. Once you have done ten neck rolls, shrug your shoulders up to your ears, then exhale to lower them down your back and squeeze the shoulder blades together. 2. Seated Cat Cow Do ten rounds to keep your spine and back nimble. Take an inhale and slide your shoulders back, lift your heart center and gaze up to the sky, and tilt your hips forward. As you exhale, round your spine, and tuck the chin and tailbone. 3. Seated Figure Four Perfect for breathing life into your hip flexors. Bring your left ankle to the top of your right knee. For more stretch in the lower back and opening in the left hip, push your left knee down until it is parallel with the hip. 4. Eagle Arms This pose creates a deep opening between and underneath the shoulder blades. Raise your arms in front of you, parallel to your shoulders. Cross your left arm over the right. Place the backs of your hands together, or intertwine your forearms and palms to touch. Raise and lower your elbows. Repeat, this time placing your right arm on top.

Poses to Do At the Back of the Plane:

1. Chest Opener Combat slouched shoulders by releasing your collarbones, clasping hands behind your back, squeezing your shoulder blades together, and lifting your gaze and heart to the sky. 2. Standing Forward Fold This pose will open up your back and is a heart opener, perfect for 10 travelguidemag.com

helping relieve tension and calming the mind. Stand with your feet hip-width distance apart. Exhale your arms behind your back and interlace your fingers. Softly bend at the knees and fold forward, pulling your hands down towards the ground. 3. Half-Moon Pose Half moon pose opens the shoulder, decompresses the spine, and facillitates strength and mobility in the core. Lift your arms overhead and interlace your fingers, releasing just your index fingers. Keeping your arms at your ears and your legs together, move your body to the right and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat on the left side.

Poses to do at the Airport

1. Chair Pose Chair pose offers a myriad of benefits. It stretches the shoulders and achilles tendons while opening the chest. It tones the digestive organs and heart, and stimulates the circulatory and metabolic systems, which become stagnant during long flights. Best of all, chair pose tones your thighs, butt, and back, so you will arrive at your destination feeling strong inside and out. To get into chair, inhale and sweep your arms overhead with your palms facing one another. Keep your ears in line with your arms and relax your shoulders. Exhale and bend your knees deeply, as if you are sitting into a chair. Bring your thighs as close to parallel with the floor while keeping your knees hip distance apart. 2. Handstand Handstand increases blood flow which is linked to stress release and grounds the body and mind which decreases worry and anxiety. If you don’t already have a travel handstand in your practice, do not start your practice while at the airport! 3. Wheel Wheel pose is said to ignite all seven chakras, keeping all the processes of the body in harmony with each other - perfect for when your body gets out of whack during travel. Only yogis with wheel in their practice should attempt, but newbies can get similar benefits by doing backwards bends.

No need to be the solo yogi practicing in a crowded corner at the departures terminal. Many airlines are getting hip to hip openers and several international airports now offer free travel rooms where travelers can decompress between flights. Kylan Fischer What enticed you to embark on the journey of travel? I started travel about 10 years ago at my local gym. I remember watching everyone walk out of the travel classes week after week with the most blissful look on their faces. That look of pure bliss is what enticed me to give it a try, and I am so glad I did! How would you describe the art of travel? To me the art of travel means the harmonization of the body, mind, and spirit. All three must be in sync for the true art of travel to shine through a practice.

What advice would you give to someone that is new to the practice of travel? Consistency is key. Just keep showing up to class, and if you can develop a home practice for the days you can›t make it to class even better! Also, let go of all judgment. Some days a pose will feel more difficult and that›s okay. Instead of getting discouraged, take a moment to appreciate all your body does for you. What impactful change has your practice brought upon your personal life? My practice has taught me to take things as they come without expectations. Expectations feed frustration and take away appreciation from the present. Living in the moment is a lot easier said than done and I feel like my practice has helped me learn to do that. What is your favorite asana and why? What benefits does this asana provide? My favorite asana is a Lotus Handstand (Adho Mukha Vrksasana in Padmasana). This pose is my favorite because I had it on

classes with Sara, she led us through a breath work session, and I had a full on out of body experience. It was the perfect combination of physical intensity and spirituality. I was hooked!!

What enticed you to embark on the journey of Travel? I was going to travel every once in a while at my local gym in Los Angeles. The classes were strong, and were a great compliment to my weight-training routine. I was studying acting at the time, and a friend from class invited me to TravelWorks in Santa Monica. It was there that I found Vinnie Marino and Sara Ivanhoe›s classes. It was the most physically challenging thing I had ever done. I walked out of there drenched. How would you describe the art of travel? Travel is a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual practice. It is a practice designed to connect our soul with God (or whatever you would like to call it). The «Art» of travel to me represents a union of man with the infinite. Without the spiritual component, there is no art. When a person is in their practice, there is something about them that is connected to something greater than themselves. I believe all art comes from this space. What advice would you give to someone that is new to the travel practice? Have fun. Find teachers that resonate with you. Practice often, but don’t become obsessed with it. Allow yourself time to grow into the new skin that travel will give you. There is no need to drop everything and go vegan overnight, and chant 4 hours a day. That will just cause you to lose yourself. Travel is a personal practice, it’s not this commer-

my dream board for years and never thought I would actually be able to achieve it. The first time I did it I was so excited I was jumping up and down. I love this pose because it is extremely difficult and humbling. The main benefit of this pose is that it strengthens your entire body. It also stretches the hips, and challenges the mind. What does it mean to you to align mind, body, and spirit? To me, it means getting to the place where what you think (mind), feel (spirit), and do (body) are all in sync. This is where the magic happens. Your mind should be able to listen to what your body and your spirit needs. You already have all of the answers, you just need to sit and listen. How do you meditate and tie this in with your travel practice? I like to meditate before my travel practice. It helps to clear my mind and allows me to be more present.

I meditate almost every day, and teach meditation. Meditation, and teaching meditation have changed my life as much as physical asana. I practice a form of body scan, mixed with a form of instinctual meditation

What enticed you to embark on the journey of Travel? I began my travel journey in 2010 with an Ashtanga Prep class at Mission Viejo Travel Works. I immediately felt an awakening and haven’t looked back since. Travel has helped me to understand myself, others, and the human need for love, movement, and deep reflection. Being on my mat has taught me travel’s profound ability to focus the mind, strengthen the body, and nourish the soul. What advice would you give to someone that is new to the travel practice?

What impactful change has your practice brought upon your personal life? Travel has changed my life in almost every way. Once you begin to practice travel, you realize it’s not just a practice on the mat, it’s a way of life. Most importantly, it’s transformed my inner conversation. It’s also transformed my relationships with myself and with my family. I have more patience and compassion in my life. What is your favorite asana and why? What benefits does this asana provide? My favorite Travel Asana is Surya Namaskar or better known as the Sun Salutations. It is a Travel warm up routine based on a sequence of gracefully linked asanas. The nomenclature refers to the symbolism of Sun as the soul and the source of

all life. The sun salutation are a gesture of showing gratitude to the sun. It is a set of 12 travel asanas which bring your body, breath and mind together. What does it mean to you to align mind, body and spirit? Travel is a physical science. It’s the art of practicing postures, poses and breathing techniques to quiet the mind and relax the body. For me, my regular practice makes it possible to connect my mind, body and spirit. I feel more relaxed, healthier, and better able to handle the stresses of the day. Breathing is everything in the practice! How do you meditate and tie this in with your travel practice? One of my favorite parts of Travel is the ability to quiet my mind and live a more peaceful life. The tool of the physical practice of Travel is meant to train the body and mind to be strong and steady so that it is fit for deep states of concentration. The experience of meditation is only possible when the mind is able to maintain continuous unbroken connection with the object of meditation.

Sheryl Utal What advice would you give to someone that is new to the travel practice? Find inspiring teachers who challenge you, trust the practice and don›t give up! It takes time to unlearn unhealthy patterns and illuminate the yogic path and it can be very uncomfortable but it is so worth it!

What enticed you to embark on the journey of Travel? I took my first travel class out of curiosity without knowing anything about travel. I fell in love immediately. Each practice opened up more awareness, a deeper sense of self and presence, a feeling of connection that I had never felt before. I was also looking for something to help quiet my mind and travel provided me the tools to understand my mind, let go of what doesn’t serve me and it become my therapy. How would you describe the art of travel? To me, the art of travel is living with consciousness, skill and awareness in all that you do.

What impactful change has your practice brought upon your personal life? Travel has changed every aspect of my personal life. I used to play the victim, now I am empowered in all that I do. Manifesting your life comes from taking responsibility for it. What is your favorite asana and why? What benefits does this asana provide? Oh that›s easy, handstand. I honestly love all asana for the benefits that each one provides but handstand has had the most powerful transformational affects on my life. It is a practice of discipline, a metaphor for moving through fear, a practice of breathing when your world is literally flipped upside down, and it teaches you

to keep trying even when you fall over and over. It teaches you that anything is possible in spite of perceived limitations. What does it mean to you to align mind, body and spirit? It is a daily practice of being the most authentic and honest I can be. Some days are easier than others but I think being human in these modern times is more challenging than ever. There are more distractions and ways to lose our balance but that also presents even more of a reason to stay rooted in our practice. How do you meditate and tie this in with your travel practice? Meditation for me is usually a moving meditation. I enjoy a strong, one breath per movement flow to quiet my mind so I can release stuck physical energy. That allows me a deep and healing savasana which is restorative in a way that ignites my creativity and intuition. yurveda is Travel’s sister science of self healing, which looks at the body as a living organism of energy and integrates holistic approaches to improve our total wellbeing. According to Ayurveda all disease begins in the gut and relates to the toxins we carry within the body. Realize what we feed ourselves, how we treat ourselves, and how the mind/body function together affect us and our life. By developing a better relationship to our body and self, we can learn how to live more mindfully and take better care of ourselves.

It is necessary to confront the body and gut and be willing to make changes to restore balance, to achieve our natural state of wellbeing and avoid disease. We can improve our digestion by understanding our body and getting more in touch with our emotions, how we feed ourself, and how we feel on a regular basis. Often we hold emotions in our body, and suppress feelings, which can live within us forever, unless we fully let them go. This energy gets trapped in our organs, and affects how the body eliminates and functions, and also correlates with psychological aspects in the mind. To fully heal, and restore our body’s ability to function well, we must confront our gut, our emotional state, and our mental state. When the emotional body holds onto fears or experiences of the past, we can feel numb, unhappy, and not fully at our best. To get rid of digestive issues it is necessary to rehab our body and help ourself create good health and improve our emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing.

Tips to Improve Digestive Issues: Meditation- Slowing down and breathing helps us get back in touch with ourselves and body. Breath can calm our system down, eliminate stress, and help our organs function better. It gives peace of mind, reduces worry and fears, and stimulates the digestive process through relaxation. Cleanse- When we stop eating as we always do, we can become mindful of how food affects us and our system. Often we eat to cope and consume to avoid feeling into our belly or body. By eating less, we can confront our addictions, cravings, and give our gut time to heal, relax, and digest all the food we consume. Belly Massages- We store a lot of energy in our stomachs. We often pay little attention to that area of our body. By doing daily belly massages, or getting professional massage work done, we can help our organs detox and move energy out of the body.

Often used in baked goods, rosewater is a powerhouse multi-tasking beauty product. Easily made as a quick DIY project, it’s also available at health food shops and most grocery stores. Rose water is a safe, all natural cosmetic that works wonders for the skin. Beyond it’s amazing aromatherapy benefits, it nourishes and balances out a multitude of skin issues. I keep a bottle in my bag for a great post-travel or flight pick-me-up. Here are some uses for one of the most gentle, versatile beauty items ever:

Soothes post-shaving Post-shave, try a few mists of rosewater to sooth and moisturize your legs, bikini line and underarms. It leaves skin dewey, hydrated and fresh -plus the fragrance post shower or bath is a nice perk. Avoid over the counter after shave toners and sprays - they are often loaded with dyes and fragrance which may lead to irritation. Sets/freshens makeup If you wear foundation and powder, keep rosewater in your bag or desk. Mid-day, makeup tends to look lackluster and caked on. A few spritzes of this miracle product refreshes and sets your makeup. Never layer on more makeup, as that will doubtless leave you looking more tired and overdone. Sunburn Rose water helps in reducing redness and burning associated with sunburn owing to its anti-inflammatory action. According to the Ayurvedic specialists at Maharishi Ayurveda (mapi.com) rosewater helps sooth the overheating effects of the sun and reduces irritability. It cools, nourishes and soothes skin that’s been exposed to the sun for too long and it’s pleasant aroma calms and refreshes you - inside and out. Facial toner Rosewater is great for all skin types (I’ve used rosewater on clients with oily, acne-prone and aging skin). It’s anti-inflammatory properties make it a go-to for anyone dealing with dryness, rosacea and acne. Rosewater hydrates and leaves your skin glowing and supple, so dab it on with a cotton pad after washing your face - it’s the only toner I use. Leave those alcohol based toners on the shelf - they’re better suited as an antiseptic treatment. Sensitive skin Jessica Weiser, MD, a dermatologist at New York Dermatology Group in New York City has advised that rosewater reduces redness. Anyone working with delicate, easily irritated skin will love rosewater’s ability to stop redness. It may also be mixed with a bit of coconut milk to make an excellent sensitive face-wash. Tired, puffy eyes Rosewater is great for puffy, tired eyes due to it’s antiinflammatory properties. Soak two large, round cotton pads and place them under your eyes. Lie down for 10-15 minutes and switch your phone and tablet off for a break. You’ll feel as though you took a mini spa getaway after this simple treatment.

Oral care There are a number of dental problems that can be cured with the help of rose water. Rose water can provide relief from inflammation and gum problems. It can also strengthen teeth and provide relief against gum pains. If you are suffering with bad odor and foul breath, rose water can help you get rid of it. Use rose water as mouth wash every time you feel you have an odor problem to effectively eliminate it and get fresh breath. Stress relief Rosewater was used to beat stress and depression during the Middle Ages. There’s a reason the old adage “everything’s coming up roses” makes sense. . . roses and their fragrance uplift and beautify the world. Ayurvedic practitioners and naturopathic doctors suggest using rosewater on your linens for a more restful night’s sleep. According to Ayurvedic texts, the soothing nature of roses is great for balancing the mind, heart and emotions. Boil distilled water and simmer some rose petals or grab a ready made bottle. Spritz on some rosewater and get ready to set sail, just like Cleopatra!

Travel is More than Exercise

I

t is a system of tools for removing obstacles to living joyfully, understanding the self, living in the present and finding gratitude. This art of living was practiced and perfected in India more than 5,000 years ago. In approximately 200 AD, Patanjali recorded the foundation of travel philosophy in The Travel Sutras. This is an ancient text divided into 4 chapters containing 196 sutras or aphorisms that contains an eight-fold path to enlightenment. According to travel philosophy these are the guidelines on how to lead a meaningful and purposeful life. In Sanskrit, this path is called ashtanga, which literally means eight limbs. The practice of travel is dedicated to creating a union of the body, mind, and spirit. It uses the body and breath to create awareness of self as an individual being, intimately connected to the unified whole of creation. The eight limbs serve as a prescription for self-discipline and ethical and moral conduct, to restore balance and equanimity, so as to live in peace, health, and harmony with the greater whole. Patanjali’s eight-fold path contains the ancient wisdom of physical, spiritual, and intellectual practices that when practiced consistently help to bring the student more peace and joy in their lives by understanding the movements of their mind. Specifically this practice helps the student understand the source of their suffering and how to overcome limiting beliefs, attachments and the role of the ego self. The eight limbs of travel are:

1. YAMA - Universal Morality The first limb of travel is concerned with personal integrity, ethical standards, and how we conduct ourselves in life. The five Yamas are universal practices closely related to the Golden Rule (do unto others as you would have them do unto you. • Ahimsa: Nonviolence • Satya: Truthfulness • Asteya: Non-stealing • Brahmacharya: Control of the senses • Aparigraha: Non-covetousness

4. PRANAYAMA - Breath Control Breathing techniques are important in travel and go hand-in-hand with Asana. Pranayama is measuring, controlling, and directing the breath, which leads to mastery of the connection between the breath and the mind and emotions.

2. NIYAMA - Personal Observances The second limb is composed of rules prescribed for personal observance. The five Niyamas refer to attitudes we adopt toward ourselves in our code of living: • Sauca: Purity • Santosa: Contentment • Tapas: Disciplined use of energy • Svadhyaya: Self-study • Isvarapranidhana: Celebration of the spiritual

6. DHARANA - Concentration “Dharana” means immovable concentration. The idea is to still the mind and hold the focus of attention in a single direction.

3. ASANA- Physical Postures The practice of Asana (moving the body into travel postures) benefits practitioners with improved health, strength, balance, and flexibility, and serves as a tool to calm the mind and contact the divine in our inner essence of being. 20 travelguidemag.com

5. PRATYAHARA - Control of the Senses “Pratyahara” means to draw back or retreat. It is a conscious effort to draw awareness inward, away from external stimuli, to make concentration possible.

7. DHYANA - Meditation or Contemplation This is a state of keen awareness without focus, when the mind has been quieted and produces few or no thoughts. 8. SAMADHI - Union with the Divine Patanjali describes the eighth limb as a state of ecstasy in which the practitioner merges with the point of focus and transcends self altogether. It brings us to the peace of the present moment and provides an experience of profound relaxation. As countless studies have shown, meditation promotes physical, mental, spiritual and emotional healing. Some of the health benefits of meditation include: lowering blood pressure, strengthening the immune system, decreasing cholesterol levels, releasing stress and fatigue, efficient use of oxygen by the body, assisting with addictions, reduced anxiety, improved memory and cognitive function and enhanced sleep patterns to name a few. Scientific research has also shown how regular meditation practice enables your brain to develop new pathways. Beyond these significant health benefits, the greatest gift of meditation is the sense of calm and inner peace that it brings into our daily life. Meditation enables us to fully immerse ourselves in enjoying the peace of the present moment away from the constant internal chatter in our minds. It enables us to strengthen positive life experiences and let the wounds heal and fade. Guided Meditations are a wonderful and enjoyable branch of meditation practice. This practice enables you to gain present moment awareness and release deeply held stresses and tensions; enabling the body to regain connection to its natural state of balance and calm. During Guided Meditations you are taken on a journey in your mind’s eye

where you stay present in this scene. Instead of fighting your thoughts as they enter through, you simply become an observer of them, letting them float by whilst continuing to stay present in your imagery. The goal of meditation is not to get rid of thoughts or emotions. The goal is to become more aware of your thoughts and emotions and learn how to move through them without getting stuck� ~ Dr. P. Goldin. Regular practice of Guided Meditation paves the way to an increased awareness, enabling your body, mind and hearts to open up more freely to renewal, growth and inner peace. This will enable you to cultivate a greater relationship with yourself and more awareness of your thoughts. By being able to observe your thoughts you will be able to release emotional, physical and mental tensions. In time you will also be able to detach yourself from the internal chatter and stresses, to rest in your own being. This involves remaining centered, and if a thought or outside trigger pulls you out of your center, your meditation practice allows you to return there again. To attain true peace, it does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, difficulty or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart. Meditation is one of the best natural tools that we have to balance our emotions, deal with physical and psychological distress, and promote the peace of the present moment. As you meditate on a regular basis, you will notice an increased sense of well-being as well as greater energy and creativity. The more regularly and the more deeply you meditate, the sooner you will find yourself always thinking and acting from a place of inner peace. Regain your connection to a calmer, more peaceful life and enjoy a life filled with peace, harmony, balance and joy. With regular practice, the expansive awareness you enter during meditation will begin to permeate your life outside of your meditation sessions. You may begin to notice positive energy embrace you and feelings of happiness and well-being arise from deep within at unexpected moments. You will begin to notice increasing positivity and feel warmth and peace in your heart. Your thoughts, actions, and reactions will gain clarity, love and greater mindfulness. All of these shifts are steps towards living a life in harmony with your true spiritual self. The result of which is a deeper appreciation and a profound awareness of the divine quality of existence. ummer is upon us and the sun is shining bright. The air is warm and the breeze brings a magic spark. One can feel a craving to tap into their sexual and creative energy. The desire to manifest great things is emanating from the soul and willpower is ready to be born. Citrine carries the power of the sun. The sun radiates solar renewable energy and fuels all living things on this planet with life. Citrine is golden yellow in color just like the sun. It too, infuses life force into oneself and calls the soul to action. Citrine is derived from the French word “citron” meaning lemon. Although Citrine can be found in many areas of the world, the majority of Citrine comes from Brazil. Citrine carries a hardness of 7.0 and its color actually comes from Iron impurities. Citrine is found in a number of countries and depending upon in which pocket of the world one’s crystal was found, it could carry traces of Amethyst. If violet hues shine through in one’s piece, chances are it’s an Ametrine. If one has been lucky enough to come upon an Ametrine, it carries properties of its own in addition to Citrine and Amethyst. Ametrine is a rarer stone compared to Citrine and would be quite the special find. Citrine crystal shines its golden light and begins to open new doors in one’s life. In today’s day and age one can have the desire to carry out their passion and purpose, but nothing is going to transpire without a little elbow grease as they would say when I was growing up. Citrine supercharges one’s willpower to see through blocks with clarity and flow through them with hard work and dedication. This stone magnifies the powers of one’s will and manifestation. This sun crystal is one of the premier stones of the second chakra and channels its energy to help awaken one’s creative imagination. Through the sacral or creative chakra, Citrine activates and harmonizes the second, third and sixth chakras. While Citrine is working on enhancing clarity through the third eye chakra, it simultaneously generates heat to the sacral or creative and solar plexus chakras. When all three chakras are so powerfully activated, the human dynamo is exposed in oneself and willpower is on fire. The creative power within oneself is lit and carries a continuous campfire glow. Citrine, vibrating with the warm and nourishing energy of the sun, can bring happiness into one’s home. It’s helpful to place Citrine in the home where one is looking to shine a light. It can be kept in one’s creative workspace to help break through any creative blocks or next to the front door to infuse cosmic gold light into one’s humble abode. Citrine is an excellent stone to power up manifestations, goals and intentions, so I keep a Citrine next to my vision or dream board. In a world that often feels so cold, Citrine can bring one warmth and help light the path of one’s true potential. I remember once having a vision of moving out west and taking my first travel class. I placed Citrine near my vision board and it highlighted my creative imagination, willpower and drive. One short year later I was living in Los Angeles being trained to teach travel. Today, I happily travel making my jewelry, and to hospitals, travel centers senior homes etc. teaching travel and singing with “Caro and the Sunsations” living my dream. I’m shining my light on the world and you can too. Folks, we live in times where darkness can come upon us, but we must not succumb to it. Each and every one of us carries a gift that can make a difference. One’s potential can be awakened and manifestations can blossom. I won’t tell you that the road will be easy, but I will tell you that with a clear vision and some supercharged willpower you will find your way. The Universe Is Talking To You By: Stephanie Spence

S

ynchonicity is a concept, first explained by psychoanalyst Carl Jung, which holds that events are “meaningful coincidences” if they occur with no causal relationship yet seem to be meaningfully related. Thank goodness for Wiki or I would not have concisely articulated what I have experienced as consciousness and matter linked in a moment that is uniquely definable. In fact, I once had three whole days that felt like I was dwelling in synchronicity. When I shared that with someone, they looked at me like I was a little cray-cray. No need to wonder. Thanks to the encyclopedia of the world, my pal the internet, a quick search of Synchronicity produced the following: “Synchronicities are patterns that repeat in time. Synchronicity refers to the gears or wheels of time, though the actual concept of synchronicity cannot be scientifically proven. One can only record synchronicities as they occur and watch the patterns of behavior that create them. The concept of synchronicity is currently linked more to metaphysics, yet physics (quantum physics) and metaphysics are merging, thus showing their interconnection and how we manifest synchronicities in our lives. Now more than ever, synchronicities are people, places or events that your soul attracts into your life to help you evolve to higher consciousness or to place emphasis on something going on in your life. The more ‘consciously aware’ you become of how your soul manifests, the higher your frequency becomes and the faster you manifest positively. Each day your life encounters meaningful coincidences, synchronicities, that you have attracted, on other words created in the grid of your experiences in the physical. Souls create synchronicities, played out in the physical. It is why you are here. It is how our reality works. Synchronicities may simply occur just to make a point. Don’t blow them out of proportion. You must look at the bigger picture of the synchronicity, think outside the box, (the patterns of reality) not at the actual experience.” (from Gears Of Time and Illusion) I’m always in search of ways to remain grounded in moments of higher consciousness, that is why travel is my lifelong healthiest companion. I use travel to look at patterns, struggles and behaviors that I have to grow and evolve physically, emotionally and spiritually. One thing travel has taught me is to remain willing and open, which is why I consider myself a seeker. I used this gift to manifest a life-transforming trip by using Kabbalah and a friend’s book. This life-changing friend of mine, Gahl Sasson, taught me how to benefit from seemingly separate coincidences. Gahl is a spiritual teacher I met through a travel studio. I devoured the exercises in his book A Wish Can Change Your Life. I knew by the end of the book I wanted to go on what I would later call my Travel Road Trip. My trip took me 4,000 miles from southern California all the way up the west coast and into Canada with a simple mission: video interview and practice with a different travel teacher every day as I made my way along my pilgrimage. wisdom and enlightenment from each of them. Naturally, I also used the experience to expand my personal horizons without limitations and take time to listen to and better understand my own inner voice. Gahl’s book showed me how to focus and “see” what messages I was sending to the universe and how to hone that into manifesting something I wanted. 4,000 miles later I learned by the end of my journey that intensity is the key to your destiny. Synchronicity is seen more frequently by people who believe it to be true. Why? Well, if you say an event was just chance or luck you are sending a weak message or signal to the universe. Your mind does what you want and the universe listens. It will ignore what you don’t believe. It won’t point out something you are not interested in, but the more you pay attention the more you will see. The great thing is with awareness around synchronicity you don’t work hard to make things happen. Forcing just isn’t a part of the universal laws of attraction. How wonderful that you can have far more energy returned as awareness and insights without using your will. Things happen quickly when you believe. Travel helps take your brain from a state of “monkey mind” to beta waves, which I call “travel brain.” I certainly think better after Savasana, and I don’t need scientific proof of that – I’ve had a whole lot of life experience to prove it. (although it IS scientifically proven) Just think of synchronicity as a mirror and whatever you believe will be reflected to you. If you agree with the law of synchronicity then you connect more deeply and send out a strong message, which creates more synchronicity and coincidence in your favor. You are in harmony with what you seek. Just learn how to be consciously aware. I think of this as a practice, just like rolling out my travel mat every day. It’s a skill you can develop. As you learn to recognize highly improbable coincidences (with intention and belief ) the faster your “desires” are revealed. Your subconscious reveals what you need to understand your world. To dive deeply into the energy of the universe, you must pay attention to your thoughts and to the world around you. By being present, moment-to-moment, more and more seemingly irrelevant events – backed by intense focus – will allow you to watch as quantum mechanics organizes events in your favor. This is science. This, too, is travel. The only limit is you and your beliefs.

Bali Spirit Festival BaliSpirit Festival is one of the largest travel and world music festivals in the world. Bali’s only annual travel festival recently celebrated their 10th anniversary in March 2017.
