ANDREW JACKSON’S HERMITAGE
ndrew Jackson was our nation’s 7th President and his homestead, known as The Hermitage, is located just 15 miles from downtown Nashville. Visitors can take a walk through the story and history of The Hermitage mansion — From Jackson’s initial purchase and major remodeling through a devastating fire and restoration, the mansion has endured and been visited by more than 17 million today. Each of The Hermitage mansion rooms tell centuries of stories. With a constant flow of travelers, multiple generations of family and the adventurous energy of the Jackson family, the rooms act as a portal into the daily lives of many Jacksonian era individuals. Jackson called The Hermitage home until his death in 1845. After
his death, the Jackson family’s financial difficulties resulted in the sale of the mansion and 500 acres of surrounding farmland to the State of Tennessee in 1856, with members of the Jackson family remaining as caretakers. After the Civil War, and with the death of Jackson’s daughter-in-law, Sarah Yorke Jackson in 1887, state officials began to consider options for using the property. In 1889, a group of prominent Nashville women, led by Amy Rich Jackson, wife of Andrew Jackson III, rallied to save the deteriorating mansion and formed the Andrew Jackson
Foundation. The early years were devoted to stabilizing the mansion and purchasing the original furnishings from the Jackson family. By the early 1930s, the foundation had acquired nearly all the Jackson’s original furnishings and possessions. The state eventually transferred ownership of all 500 acres to the AJF and in 1960 the National Park Service named The Hermitage a National Historic Landmark. Today, the AJF manages 1,120 acres of Jackson’s plantation with 27 historic buildings and structures (12 of which date to the Jackson period), a one-acre pleasure garden and numerous archaeological sites. The collections include paintings, prints, furniture, decorative arts, textiles and personal possessions, as well as nearly 800,000 archaeological artifacts. A must visit while in Nashville!

JEFF RUBY’S STEAKHOUSE NASHVILLE A Total Dining Experience
J
eff Ruby opened his first steakhouse in 1981 with the intention on building a total dining experience unlike anything his guests have ever seen. Almost 4 decades later, that vision is stronger than ever. He has often said that people don’t go to his restaurants because they’re hungry. They can go to the refrigerator for that. He believes his guests go there to celebrate life. And, for each and every one of those guests, he makes it a priority to deliver the very best steaks, freshest seafood & sushi, live entertainment and absolute impeccable service. He calls this philosophy the Jeff Ruby experience. Jeff Ruby’s steakhouses are perhaps best known for their steaks - nationally-acclaimed U.S.D.A. Prime Beef that has earned rave reviews from renowned critics and connoisseurs to celebrities and everyday steak lovers alike. The product is the best of the best: personally-sourced purebred heritage black angus that is simply unavailable to anyone else in the country. Their sushi and raw bar is one of the best in the city offering a stunning array of sashimi and nigiri as well as classic and specialty rolls. The raw bar 16

specialties include Alaskan red king crab legs, huge tiger shrimp and a rotating menu of the freshest east and west coast oysters. They’ve received both local and national recognition for their efforts. Jeff Ruby’s steakhouse has been named Nashville’s #1 best steakhouse, one of down town’s best restaurants, and have received multiple diner’s choice awards through Opentable. com. Their restaurants have also earned accolades from wine spectator, Travel + Leisure, USAToday, Zagat, and many more. Most noteworthy, though, is perhaps the ongoing trust and unwavering loyalty given to this brand by its guests and friends. This devotion is very rare in today’s rapidly changing landscape in the hospitality industry and it speaks volumes about the manner in which Jeff Ruby’s steakhouse team values its guests on a nightly basis. Jack Cawthon’s Bar-B-Que has been a Nashville tradition since 1976 and is a crowd favorite as noted by the lines out the door on Broadway. Jack started on Broadway and now has three Nashville locations to serve the locals and the many visitors to the Music City; Broadway, Trinity Lane, and Charlotte Avenue. Jack began his journey in the catering business and soon became one of Nashville’s Society Caterers. However in the late 1970’s with the economic challenges faced from the recession, Jack remembered this quote from Henry Ford, “Cater to the masses and dine with the classes.” With these words Jack made the change from catering and went into the restaurant business. At this time Memphis was the BBQ hotspot where pork was king and sauce was the boss. After much travel and study, Jack came up with his own style of bar-b-que he wanted to offer and describes it as a combination of Texas and Tennessee BBQ; introducing beef brisket and regionally inspired sauces in Nashville. In 2014, Travel + Leisure Magazine rated Nashville #1 over Memphis as the best BBQ city in the USA. Jack certainly had a part in this and raised the bar making Nashville a national BBQ destination. Look for the Nashville tradition and the flying pigs sign over Broadway, where guests can dine on the patio by the back stage door of the historic Ryman Auditorium. Jack’s BBQ features six hickory smoked meats and six award winning sauces. Order yourself a plate, with two sides and bread and dig in! Whether you order the smoked Texas sausage, smoked Boston turkey, Texas beef brisket, Tennessee pork shoulder, smoked chicken, or St. Louis style ribs, you won’t be disappointed!

THE NASHVILLE FARMERS’ MARKET Welcomes You 362 Days a Year
The Nashville Farmers’ Market, founded in the early 1800s, is located in the urban core of downtown Nashville providing year-round retail space to farmers, artisans, nonprofits and small businesses. The Market includes two covered open-air sheds, a lettuce farm inside a recycled shipping container, a microgreens greenhouse farm, a 24,000-squarefoot garden center, a culinary incubation center and an international food hall featuring some two-dozen restaurants and shops. Chef-led cooking demonstrations and community workshops are also offered on a monthly basis. With more than 200,000 people walking through the gates annually, the Nashville Farmers’ Market has played a central role in middle Tennessee food culture by connect-
ing countless customers with farmers and food artisans selling high-quality fruits and vegetables, mushrooms, meat, cheese and more. This access also has helped drive the success of numerous nationally recognized restaurants as local chefs capitalize on the Market’s offerings to the benefit of their menus. In addition to Southern staples, the Market House restaurants have introduced a generation of Tennesseans to a range of international flavors — from Greek and Korean to Italian, French, Mexican, Indian and Laotian. Various food trucks parked on-premises throughout the year offer even more variety, from Thai and Venezuelan to grilled cheese.

The Market House includes one of Nashville’s favorite watering holes, The Picnic Tap, plus the Natchez Hills tasting room, which showcases the offerings of nearby Natchez Hills Winery. The Nashville Farmers’ Market operates two neighborhood markets: the Vanderbilt Farmers’ Market and the Azafran Park Farmers’ Market. Located on the Vanderbilt Medical Center Campus, the Vanderbilt Market operates every Thursday in June through October. The Azafran Market at Azafran Park operates in partnership with Conexion Americas and Metro Parks every Tuesday in May through October. The Farmer’s Market is located just north of the Tennessee State Capitol, offering convenient access to the newly opened Tennessee State Museum, Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park (the only urban state park in the nation) and First Tennessee Park — home of the Nashville Sounds minor-league baseball team.
Market customers get free on-premises two-hour parking that is supplemented on weekends with free access to area state lots that are just a five-minute walk away.

MAKE HISTORY COME ALIVE
Plan Your Event at the Tennessee State Museum
T
he Tennessee State Museum, on the corner of Rosa L. Parks Blvd. and Jefferson Street at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, is home to 13,000 years of Tennessee art and history. Through six permanent exhibitions titled Natural History, First Peoples, Forging a Nation (1760-1860), The Civil War and Reconstruction (1860-1870), Change and Challenge (1870-1945) and Tennessee Transforms (1945-Present), the Museum takes visitors on a journey – through artifacts, films, interactive displays, events and educational programing – from the state’s geological beginnings to the present day. Beyond exhibition spaces, the Museum’s two-story Grand Hall, second¬

floor rotunda and wrap-around veranda all offer stunning views of downtown Nashville, providing the perfect setting for weddings and other celebrations, while the state-of-the-art Digital Leaning Center offers ample and flexible space for conferences, lectures, film screenings and more. All events can be enhanced with access to the museum’s exhibitions. In the last year since it has opened, the Museum has hosted dozens of conferences, corporate events, symposiums, film screenings and parties, but it’s been weddings where the space has really shined. As each wedding has its own unique theme tailored to its celebrants, event designers have continually transformed the flexible space to make the experience special for the attendees. Underneath the Grand Hall’s 96 lights, on the three stars inlaid into the spaces fall, designers have
had seated dinners at 10-top tables with service from the Museum’s ample catering kitchen, to highboy cocktail tables with servers making the rounds. One recent farmto-table celebration used the spaces in the Grand Hall for cocktails, before seating guests at long farm tables just outside the space. This is Nashville, of course, where no wedding would be complete without music. The Grand Hall has hosted everything from symphonic quartets and bluegrass acts, to choirs and solo vocalists accompanied by piano, to full bands. Views of the Capitol provide a dramatic backdrop for all the performances. The Museum is free and open to the public Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. For more information on exhibitions and events, please visit tnmuseum.org. For more information about booking your event at the Museum, please visit tnmuseum.org/venue-rental or write events@tnmuseum.org.

ADVENTURES AT THE NASHVILLE ZOO More Options with the Backstage Tour
N
ashville Zoo added four new tour options to its already extensive Backstage Pass Tour program. These new tours include face-toface, or sometimes faceto-beak, encounters with a variety of ambassador animals not normally seen during a regular Zoo visit. “These tours give guests an opportunity to see animals and the Zoo in a different light,” said Jac Menish, Nashville Zoo Behavioral Husbandry Curator. “People get to see the animals up close and learn about all the extraordinary care the Zoo provides.” The four new “Getting to Know You” tours include, Chilean flamingo, two-toed sloth, aardvark and cassowary. Chilean
flamingo, two-toed sloth and aardvark will take place in the Zoo’s new Behavioral Husbandry building, not normally accessible to the public, while the cassowary tour will happen at the exhibit across from Kangaroo Kickabout. 34
SPRING 2020
“We added these more personal-focused tours so folks could have a more intimate experience with animals that are not usually seen in this way,” Menish said. “Some of these animals are also not on exhibit, so this is the only way you can experience them.” Guests will also learn about Nashville Zoo’s conservation projects around the world and what the Zoo does to preserve and protect species of all kinds.
Other tour options are three cart tours. These also take guests behind the scenes and show where the animals sleep at night. These tours travel by cart, but also include some walking. Cart tour options include We Care: About Giraffes, Saving Species: Anteater, Okapi & Bongo and Rise & Shine with Rhinos. These tours offer chances to visit the commissary where our dieticians make our animals’ meals, meet one of the most elusive animals in the world and feed our outgoing giraffes. Each cart tour is about 75-minutes, while the “Getting to Know You” tours are about 45 minutes. Each tour is available on select dates and times throughout the day. The Zoo also offers a quick 30-minute tour of the HCA Healthcare Veterinary Center that meets at the vet center viewing deck. “Tours are great gifts,” said Robin Mahoney, Nashville Zoo Outreach Area Supervisor. “Many people have joined us celebrating a special day and made memories that lasted a lifetime.” Guests should be aware of the age limit of each tour and that some of these tours might involve walking on uneven terrain. The Zoo doesn’t offer rain checks, but can give refunds and allow folks to reschedule. If someone needs special accommodation or wheelchair accessibility, please let the Zoo staff know ahead of time, so they can make those accommodations. EIGHTEEN HUMMINGBIRDS
N
Spotlight on a Local Author
ashville is full of so many talented people and the energy around town reverberates between the buildings and on the streets. You can’t miss them, from the artists and musicians, to the restaurateurs and chefs, and of course all the people that keep Nashville a safe and thriving city. However, there is one group behind the scenes that are the soothing soul of Nashville – Photo Credit Christy Long the song writers. Let me introduce you care of those that are still here. She to Trisha Holland, a true Tennessee didn’t look for signs, but the signs were girl. She was a singer in Music City certainly there providing confirmation for many years and now later in life, that everyone in the universe stays writing became a newfound love and connected no matter what. Holland’s goal. It seemed the loss of family and book, Eighteen Hummingbirds, is a friends weighed heavy on her heart small gift book and a labor of love that until she found a way to process her was published after she became parentfeelings through songs, poetry, and less. It tells the story of what happened original quotes. the day her mother’s body was taken away to be cremated and how the hummingbirds came to comfort her. The poetry, quotes and lyrics in this book, mean something different to every person who reads them. One of Holland’s favorite quotes in the book is, “Let go of what needs to sail in a different wind.” She and her family were walking along the beach when they came across a damaged sailboat that had washed up on the shore. Her niece captured the moment with ara am cN M a photo of Holland holding onto the te t Annet Photo Credi boat while the wind was whipping Holland found comfort up huge waves. When Holland saw in believing that the universe takes care the photo she thought, “Now, there’s of everyone that moves on and takes 38

something you should let go of. Thank goodness the family on the boat let go and got to safety.” But letting go isn’t always easy! After reading the book, so many people have conveyed how much her words meant to them as they too had things they were holding onto they wished they were freed from. Holland has also penned many songs throughout her career. One song titled “Ashes of a Soul,” she quietly sang as her mom’s ashes floated away. “Those words were so special,” she said. “As I wrote the bridge to that song, I heard my mom’s favorite tune playing in my head and felt less alone.” I’m letting go of everything but your soul And on a rainy day when I’m alone I can’t even write a song I’ll hear your favorite melody My heart will know for certain Your soul didn’t let go of me I’m letting go of everything but your soul
Taking a nod from the universe, Holland has allowed herself to write and sing from her heart. She is now working on a second book, a short story, and screen play due out the fall of 2020. Along with local book signings, she had a signing at the famous Sundog Books in Seaside, Florida, which was a dream come true. Follow Holland on social media on Facebook @trishaholland and Instagram @hollandtrisha1. Eighteen Hummingbirds is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Duck River Books in Columbia, TN, and is available wholesale. www.travelhost.com
