fter a day exploring the sites of Nashville, including the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Parthenon in Centennial Park, Nissan Stadium, and the Nashville Music Garden, stop into The Melting Pot for a delicious fondue dinner. You’ll find the Melting Pot restaurant on historic 2nd Avenue where the streets are lined with beautiful Victorian buildings in the heart of downtown Nashville’s entertainment district. Start your interactive dining experience with a cheese fondue prepared tableside, followed by a fresh salad with house-made dressings. Next is your entrée of tantalizing meats, seafood, and vegetables, served with your choice of cooking style and dipping sauces. And lastly comes dessert—a bubbling pot of chocolate fondue complete with decadent dippers like strawberries, marshmallows, and blondies. One bite of our delectable fondue dishes and you’ll understand why we have won multiple awards from OpenTable and Nashville Scene. The Melting Pot remains a favorite for romance, celebrations, and friendly business dinners. The leisurely dinner inspires intimate rich conversation that brings you closer to family and friends. Mark Rosenthal, owner of the Melting Pot, calls it the “Fondue Effect”. The Melting Pot is a must try in Nashville. Valet parking is available throughout the week for low rates. Let the Pigs Fly! Jack’s BBQ
J
ack Cawthon’s Bar-B-Que has been a Nashville tradition since 1976 and is a crowd favorite as noted by the lines out the door on Broadway. Jack started on Broadway and now has three Nashville locations to serve the locals and the many visitors to the Music City; Broadway, Trinity Lane, and Charlotte Avenue. Jack began his journey in the catering business and soon became one of Nashville’s Society Caterers. However in the late 1970’s with the economic challenges faced from the recession, Jack remembered this quote from Henry Ford, “Cater to the masses and dine with the classes.” With these words Jack made the change from catering and went into the restaurant business. At this time Memphis was the BBQ hotspot where pork was king and sauce was the boss. After much travel and study, Jack came up with his own style of bar-b-que he wanted to offer and describes it as a combination of Texas and Tennessee BBQ; introducing beef brisket and regionally inspired sauces in Nashville. In 2014, Travel + Leisure Magazine rated Nashville #1 over Memphis as the best BBQ city in the USA. Jack certainly had a part in this and raised the bar making Nashville a national BBQ destination. Look for the Nashville tradition and the flying pigs sign over Broadway, where guests can dine on the patio by the back stage door of the historic Ryman Auditorium. Jack’s BBQ features six hickory smoked meats and six award winning sauces. Order yourself a plate, with two sides and bread and dig in! Whether you order the smoked Texas sausage, smoked Boston turkey, Texas beef brisket, Tennessee pork shoulder, smoked chicken, or St. Louis style ribs, you won’t be disappointed!

Tennessee State Museum
he Tennessee State Museum, which officially opened in 1937 at the War Memorial Building in Downtown Nashville, will get a brand new home in 2018. Housed in a 137,000 square foot facility slated to open on Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park in October, the new location is built with the visitor in mind, with ample room to engage with history and the Museum’s vast collection of art and artifacts. The permanent exhibits will pull from the collection of artifacts and lead the visitor through a “Tennessee Time Tunnel” which begins with the state’s early geological development to the First Tennesseans and on to “Forging a Nation,” where visitors will learn about Southeastern Indians and Overmountain People, enslaved and free African Americans, the Creek War and War of 1812, Andrew Jackson, the Trail of Tears, President Polk and westward expansion, and more. The Tennessee State Museum’s Civil War holdings are some of the finest in the nation, and a significant part of the permanent collection will focus on
16

the War and Reconstruction. Following the Civil War, visitors will explore a “New South,” the Spanish-American War, WWI, Woman Suffrage, the Great Depression, the New Deal and World War II. “Tennessee Transforms” will take guests through the post-war era in Tennessee, through Civil Rights and up to the present day. The permanent exhibition will also be highly visual and interactive, with introductory films in every gallery, soundscapes, and touch screens and tables where visitors can discover Civil War battles, hear a soldier’s story and learn about significant individuals from counties throughout the state. Six temporary galleries, housed on the second floor, will provide an opportunity for the Museum to tell more stories. . In October, the Museum will open with six exhibits which feature artifacts from the Museum’s Collection to tell the story: The State of Sound: Tennessee’s Musical Heritage, a survey of the broad range of musical genres and its progenitors that came from
Tennessee, Over There, Over Here: The Centennial of World War I, an exploration of our state’s role in the Great War, Early Expressions: Art in Tennessee before 1900, In Search of the New: Art in Tennessee since 1900, Why Do Museums Collect? and Red Grooms: A Retrospective. On the first floor of the Museum will be the Children’s Gallery, education center and the 250-seat auditorium and Digital Learning Center. The Children’s Gallery will provide a learn-though-play environment where children can traverse the entire state learning what is special in the history and geography of the three grand divisions of West, Middle and East Tennessee. The Digital Learning Center will be the home lectures, discussions, films and more. The new Tennessee Museum Store will feature plenty of local products and crafts from Tennessee makers. Also exciting is the location of the Museum on the Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, at the corner where Germantown meets North Nashville, just a few blocks from First Tennessee Park, where the Nashville Sounds play. The entrance from the Park features a Grand Hall, and the second-floor curved outside veranda will give guests a perfect view of downtown Nashville and the State Capitol. There will be free parking and wide open spaces for children to play. As in the past, the Museum will remain free for all visitors. Please visit tnmuseum.org for more information. www.travelhost.com

Guests are welcomed either inside or outside of the expansive giraffe barn, depending on weather, and are encouraged to feed the giraffes some of their favorite food – lettuce. This tour is offered daily at 2:30 p.m. during the summer hours. Purchase your ticket in advance through our website www.nashvillezoo.org/ backstage or at the Zoo’s ticket booth (subject to availability). All children must be accompanied by an adult. Nashville Zoo Welcomes Andean Bears to New Peruvian Exhibit
N
ashville Zoo has just completed its largest project to date – Expedition Peru: Trek of the Andean Bear. This immersive exhibit features 10 different animal species, four waterfalls and a hidden cotton-top tamarin exhibit in the women’s restroom. Animals throughout this exhibit include: Andean bears, pudu (world’s smallest deer), guinea pigs, fresh water stingrays, cotton-top tamarins, green-crested basilisk and an assortment of other reptiles and fish. From the moment guests step into this new feature, they are enveloped in a realistic, indigenous village featuring a Peruvian lodge, courtyard with seating areas, lush vegetation and beautiful wood, stone and metalwork. Visitors get an unobstructed view of the bears from several observation points, including one underwater. The Peruvian

lodge contains interactive educational displays where guests can learn about a variety of South American animals and also boasts spectacular views of these bears no matter where they are in the exhibit. Outside this facility, guests have the opportunity to observe through side view-
ing areas and even watch a keeper train the bears up close. Although some may chuckle at the thought of featuring a usual household pet, guinea pigs are a large portion of Peruvian culture, therefore were included in this exhibit. Nashville Zoo features

five breeds of guinea pigs and showcases around 30-40 at one time. Docents are stationed nearby with information and a guinea pig for guests to pet during their visit. Tucked away inside the female restroom, the mated pair of cotton-top tamarins leap from branch to branch in their own private oasis. Similar to the python exhibit in the male restroom in Entry Village, this exhibit is seen through a floor-toceiling glass window and is only accessible to women and their small children. “One of the things that we’re trying most not to do is copy anyone else,” said Rick Schwartz, Nashville Zoo President and CEO. “When you come to Nashville Zoo as a visitor, you will not see these exhibits at another zoo.” Andean bears were selected for this expansion because the Zoo staff, especially Schwartz, wanted to showcase endangered or threatened animals. The Andean bear is the only native bear to South America. These bears have lost 90% of their original habitat due to mining, farming and lumber, and are currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Nashville Zoo Carnivore Area Supervisor, Shawna Farrington, who helped raise Luka, Nashville Zoo’s female Andean bear, at Phoenix Zoo, said the guests are going to have fun watching these bears’ antics

throughout the exhibit. “Giving our visitors the up close visceral experience with these charismatic bears will really encourage guests to get excited to act locally and globally to make efforts to sustain this species,” Farrington said. Next on Nashville Zoo’s plate is finishing their renovation of the Sumatran tiger exhibit. Formally a Bengal tiger exhibit, the Zoo wanted to give guests a more interactive opportunity to learn about tigers. The new exhibit will include an indoor viewing area with a wall of floor-to-ceiling
windows, training wall and bridge overlook. “Other than being an entertainment venue, guests will leave with a better understanding and appreciation for what their local zoo is doing for world wildlife conservation,” Schwartz said. “This is a really good time for Nashville Zoo.” Nashville Zoo at Grassmere 3777 Nolensville Pike, Nashville, TN 37211 (615) 833-1534

ravel just a few short miles south of Nashville and you’ll discover one of the most beautiful towns in the South, Franklin. Best seen on foot, you’ll enjoy exploring the town’s historic downtown, its vibrant shopping district, delectable eateries, and Civil War history. Founded in 1799, Franklin’s 217-year history has been meticulously preserved to allow visitors a glimpse into 19th century life. The November 30, 1864 Battle of Franklin, left the town bowed but not broken. You’ll better understand the effect the nation’s greatest conflict
had on the town and its citizens. And after dark, Franklin is just ‘acrawlin’ with

the spirits of the dearly departed. Did we mention the best way to see Franklin is on foot? That’s where we come in! Franklin on Foot has offered guided walking tours of Franklin since 2003. The Classic Franklin looks back at some of Franklin’s most interesting people and the events that shaped Franklin. You’ll learn about an enterprising slave, a most unlikely spy, and see beautiful historic buildings. The Haunted Franklin tour explores the ghosts and spirits that linger on Franklin’s brick-lined streets and historic buildings. Departed socialites, several Civil War soldiers, failed businessmen haunt downtown Franklin. Our Civil War tour covers Franklin’s role in the War, beginning with Tennessee’s secession and entry into the War, through Union occupation and the November 30, 1864 battle. You’ll see how profoundly Franklin’s residents, both slave and free, were affected. We’ve got some skeletons in our closet, and they’ll all be revealed on our Murder & Mayhem tour. The tour takes a hard look at Franklin’s seamy underbelly, something perhaps the Chamber of Commerce would rather we didn’t talk about. Franklin’s restaurant scene led us to the idea of a food tour, and in 2012, the Southern Style Food Tour was born. We’ll sample from 5 of our favorites restaurants over the three-hour tour, and you’ll definitely appreciate Southern cuisine at the end. So come see us, y’all!

EXPERIENCE FRANKLIN’S GREAT AMERICAN MAIN STREET
T
he 4th Annual Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival takes place in Franklin, Tennessee, located just 20 minutes south of Nashville. The festival’s inspiration came when musician and Franklin resident Kevin Griffin was on a run through The Park at Harlinsdale, a beautiful century-old horse farm that sits on 230 acres. Griffin was so taken by the views and natural amphitheaters he thought it was a perfect fit for a music festival venue. With the approval of the City of Franklin, Griffin began to dream up a music festival and partnered with lifelong buddies W. Brandt Wood and Michael Whelan.
Pilgrimage takes place during the day offering a diverse lineup of rock and roll, alt-country, bluegrass, jazz, indie, gospel and more. The festival features six stages, heralded lineups, and showcases hundreds of local artisans, restaurants, and food trucks adding authenticity to the Pilgrimage experience. This year a late addition to the lineup was Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds. “We knew we wanted Dave and Tim, but their focus was on the album coming out in June. We have the type of crowd where Dave and Tim fall right in and we’re happy to have them,” Griffin said. Other headliners include Jack White, Chris Stapleton, and Lionel Richie. Historic Franklin is within walking distance of the festival venue. After the festival, guests can visit the heart of downtown historic Franklin to www.travelhost.com
experience the great American main street. “A few must stops include the Frothy Monkey on 5th and White’s Mercantile, owned by Holly Williams, Hank Williams Jr. daughter,” Griffin commented. “There’s also a new authentic taco place, Mojo Tacos, that I think has southern California worthy tacos,” Griffin stated. Downtown historic Franklin welcomes visitors to enjoy the many restaurants, bars, and retail shops. It’s southern hospitality is full of charm!♦ Visit www.pilgrimagefestival.com for additional information.
