ome events are large and elegant. Some are small and intimate. But growing trends in recent decades see today’s weddings pairing the event with the personalities of the bride and groom. Each is as individual as its participants and their passions. Rural? Cosmopolitan? Theatrical? Sporting? Cooking? Holidaythemed? And wedding venues pull it all together. See how Madison County’s options can provide the perfect setting for the perfect wedding day.

Anderson/Madison County Wedding Guide

When the Paramount opened in 1929, this jewel brought a “wow” factor to downtown Anderson.

They’re all about love, to be sure, but today’s weddings are as different as are each bride and groom. Time was not kind to the theatre. It closed in 1985 and came close to demolition. But locals stepped in, and stepped up. They created a not-for-profit and brought the Paramount back to life. Older locals remember the movies they watched as children. The younger generation has been coming for programs that include the ballet, the symphony, holiday specials, prom. “You come here as a child and you start to develop a love for the Paramount,” says former program director Taylor Bowlin. “There are so many things over the course of a life that you’d attend the Paramount for. It sticks with you. And then you think, why not add our wedding?” And, she says, growing numbers of brides find the Paramount when they google wedding venues. Guests often gasp when they enter, and then they say, “I had no idea there was anything like this in Anderson.” Most wedding receptions are in the Hardacre Ballroom, upstairs, which comfortably seats 250 for dinner. Some ceremonies are also held there. But the theater itself is a possibility.

“People have memories of this place,” Bowlin adds. “This is the coolest thing.”

ANDERSON MUSEUM OF ART 32 W. 10th Street Anderson andersonart.org Still lifes. Nature scenes. Portraits. All original, by artists that include Edgar Forkner, James Eccles, Jan Van Sickle. And oh my, that stained glass dome and rotunda. Add three small galleries and you’ve got a dramatic coziness that brings everyone into the celebration. Then add history; this Beaux Arts gem began life as a Carnegie library in 1905 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. A multi-milliondollar renovation in the 1990s polished its original features to perfection. Think marble floor, gold leaf, pillars. The ambience absolutely calls out for a bridal reception. With options from 40 to 200 guests, the couple’s special day can include the ceremony and reception, or perhaps only the reception. With minimal decoration required, it provides stress-free readiness for everyone at a reasonable price.

Mooneyhan says that today’s weddings tend to include both ceremony and reception. “Many ceremonies are shorter so they keep everything together,” she says. Because The Edge has hosted weddings for many years, it has experience with many options.

“A lot of people choose us because they don’t have to decorate,” says administrative assistant Cheryl Mitchell.

the restaurant, to live theater and guest speakers to so many other events. Maybe that’s why weddings aren’t always at the top of the public’s list.

And there’s more than a dollop of heartfelt sentiment built in. Parents and grandparents often look around, smile and say, “I can remember when this was the library.” Perfect for a wedding story.

Think again, Mooneyhan suggests, from the ballroom set with white linens, elegant chiavari chairs, and fireplace. The natural light streaming in adds to the overall ambiance.

THE EDGE GOLF & DINING

Events manager Mariah Mooneyhan calls The Edge “a hidden gem.”

It’s just part of the expansive setting options available, both inside and out. The outdoor gazebo, reminiscent of Hallmark movies, welcomes loving, blissful thoughts as it anchors a look out at the manicured golf course – a stunning view, particularly in the evening.

It sounds like a contradiction, since the venue is big enough and public enough for a wide variety of events – from playing the golf course to dining in

There’s also the patio as well as buffet and bar areas separate from the dining room, which itself seats 150. Additional options include slide shows.

MADISON COUNTY IS “THE PERFECT SITE” by Elizabeth Granger

A meeting in the middle, she calls it. And that’s how Breann and Evan Mynsberge chose Anderson for their wedding site. He’s from Farmland. She’s from Peru. Hawks Point Acres in Anderson was the perfect spot between their parents’ homes – for this couple already living in Ohio. “The venue had the feel of being out in the private countryside,” Breann says. “Yet it was still close by a city, the interstate, and hotels.” She points out the beauty of the site as well as flexibility in choosing catering and bartending services. “The bridal house and groom’s garage were something that made the day convenient and super fun,” she adds.

Mooneyhan says that today’s weddings tend to include both ceremony and reception. “Many ceremonies are shorter so they keep everything together,” she says. Because The Edge has hosted weddings for many years, it has experience with many options. “I love weddings,” she says. “The father/daughter dance gets to me every time.”

HAWKS POINT ACRES 4545 Madison Ave. Anderson hawkspointacres.com The sweeping meadow, right off Anderson’s Madison Avenue, is a surprise. Set back from the road, it’s quiet and spacious and waiting for the bride and groom and their guests.

Joey and Ellie Riedle of St. Louis, Missouri, have a story that covers even more geography. He grew up in Fishers, she in Carmel and St. Louis. Ellie’s dad is from Anderson, and many of the bride’s and groom’s family and friends are in Indiana. Ellie calls Hawks Point Acres a gem. “Having our pictures on sight was a priority for us, and this venue provides vast space for photographers to get creative,” she says. “The barn was stunning and the communication and help from the staff were delightful.” “We really wanted a barn,” Joey adds. “And we were able to use all the space for different things and not have to go anywhere else. Parking, places to get ready, photo sites – it had a lot to offer.” (top photo) Allie Marie Photography • www.allie-marie.com (bottom photo) Huff Photography • www.huff.photography

The Lowstetters always knew, somehow, that a venue for weddings and other occasions would be in their future. “My favorite part is being part of someone’s memorable day,” Lowstetter says. Built seven years ago as a wedding venue, it was known as The Barn at Hawks Point. New owners represent a new venue. Missy Lowstetter and her husband bought the property in September of 2020 and changed its name to Hawks Point Acres. They bought additional property next door, added amenities, and streamlined the process from first inquiry to final event day. The Lowstetters always knew, somehow, that a venue for weddings and other occasions would be in their future. Dashed hopes in Hancock County laid the framework for them; when Hawks Point flew onto their radar, they were ready. “My favorite part is being part of someone’s memorable day,” Lowstetter says.

Most couples have both the ceremony and reception at Hawks Point. The barn – think rustic charm with modern amenities – seats 175 for dinner. Outdoor spaces with acres of meadow provide stunning photo ops. And an adjoining farmhouse adds get-ready space for both bride and groom and their participants that includes a multitude of amenities ranging

from a make-up room to a video gaming set-up.

THE CRYSTAL COOP RECEPTION & EVENT CENTER 3400 W 53rd St. Anderson thecrystalcoop.com Think barn. Then add crystal chandeliers. Enjoy the juxtaposition. You’re at The Crystal Coop. With bowling alleys and flipping houses in their family history, sisters Cheree Fillmore and Stacey Hill – know that their maiden name is Cooper – had a vision for a wedding venue. When they looked at property for sale on West 53rd Street in Anderson, they immediately knew it was their site. “We could see it,” Fillmore says. “We knew it could happen.” In August of 2018 The Crystal Coop welcomed its first event. Rustic but elegant, they call it. “They love that it looks like a barn on the outside but is classy on the inside,” Fillmore says. Options include the inside – those crystal chandeliers just cannot be ignored – as well as

THE LODGE ON MAIN 818 Main St. Lapel thelodgeonmainlapel.com It’s a bit of a homecoming for Stephanie Evelo. After years of living in Hamilton County, she returned to her home of Lapel. She and her husband, Derek, bought the Masonic lodge and revamped it to become a community center for a variety of events. They asked the community to help them name the property. “Whenever anybody talked about it, they’d call it The Lodge,” Evelo says. When she and her husband got married 26 years ago, there was nowhere in Lapel to have their

The building, with a rustic feel, offers two rooms; the Magnolia Room holds 100, the Gardenia Room 50. But a realistic total count would more closely be 125. “We provide the space and they create the vision they want,” Evelo says. that this dream-that-becamea-reality is about their family – husbands, children, parents, grandparents. Their dream was to turn their grandfather’s 3,000-squarefoot Quonset barn, where they played as kids, into a space for community events. Their grandparents used to sell junk/ antiques from a small red barn; it was named Whetsel’s Red Barn. A bigger red barn sits in front of the Quonset barn. The Quonset is actually white – with a red door and red shutters. In 2019 work started to make the dream come true. Their first event, in 2020, was a graduation party for O’Connor’s oldest son.
