Spring has sprung, and the birds aren’t the only ones singing. This season kicks off plenty of outdoor musical entertainment events, and our cover story will have you packing everything from blankets and binoculars to lawn chars and picnics. Many of these “alfresco” concerts are part of bigger festivals, so you can spend an entire day or weekend enjoying food, vendors, and other special events leading up to the main stage performances.
...we’re focusing on waterways— rivers, streams, and tributaries where you can plan a fun getaway to enjoy kayaking, canoeing, and even taking a boat tour in a cave.
In past issues, we’ve loved talking about all the lake fun you can have in Indiana in spring and summer. But in this issue, we’re focusing on waterways—rivers, streams, and tributaries where you can plan a fun getaway to enjoy kayaking, canoeing, and even taking a boat tour in a cave.
Our story on international restaurants and food festivals will inspire you to taste your way around the world, without even leaving Indiana. We’ll take you to places like Indonesia and the Mediterranean, and you’ll learn about Indiana’s first Filipino bakery.
Also in this issue you’ll read about Indiana State Parks, how you can visit bison in Newton County, and lake life in La Porte. And, we’ve included listings of some of the best festivals coming up during the 2024 festival season.
Check out our regular sections: Destination, Outdoor, Culinary, and Arts. And as always, be sure and check out our website, travelindiana.com for even more trip ideas.
Happy and safe travels!

story by GLENDA WINDERSSpring sunshine after a dreary winter is an invitation to get out of the house and back outside, and one of the best ways to enjoy that newfound freedom is to experience performing arts events al fresco, usually at a concert or show outdoors under the wide-open sky. Fortunately you won’t have far to go to find one.
Take, for example, Lafayette, where Mosey Downtown Main Street will take place once a month beginning in May and twice in August. On these days business owners, artists and musicians team up to provide an evening of free family-friendly entertainment for everyone in your group. In addition to three music stages, sidewalk chalk, street performers, handmade hula hoops, drum circles, DJs, belly dancers, balloon animals and more will be on offer. And while all of this is happening, you’ll be munching on the food, beer and wine that will be available for sale.
Also in Lafayette, the TASTE of Tippecanoe will be happening on June 15. For over forty years, the TASTE has been downtown Lafayette’s largest, annual street festival featuring the best food and live music from in and outside Tippecanoe County. And watch the calendar for concerts and events at the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater. This 166-acre park features a venue seating 1,511 for plays and concerts, with amenities such as restrooms, a concession stand and plenty of grassy areas everyone can enjoy.
August will bring Ouibache, a roots music festival dedicated to preserving the virtues and values of traditional roots music. Musicians of all types from all over the world will gather to play tunes and commune with one another. Stage shows will feature local, regional, national and international acts. Music, demonstrations and dancing will all be part of the fun that goes on throughout the festival.
In Hammond the place to be is the lakeside Pavilion at Wolf Lake Memorial Park , just 20 minutes from downtown Chicago. The “PAV” and its tower design were inspired by the 1895 Frank Lloyd Wright amusement resort concept for Wolf Lake. The distinctive pavilion’s 2,600-square-foot main stage plays host to all kinds of concerts and events, and 86,000 square feet of grass and concrete provides seating for everyone who wants to come. Mark your calendar for July 17-21 when Wolf Lake will be home to five days of fun and entertainment at the annual Festival of the Lakes. The

festival includes popular musical acts, fair rides, games, and food vendors.
You can experience musicians and bands right in the heart of downtown Crown Point. Their “Sounds of Summer” concert series will be held in the Franciscan Health Amphitheater at Bulldog Park on various Thursdays during the Car Cruise, and Saturday nights throughout the summer. All concerts are free to attend.
When we think of “performing arts” it’s easy to picture concerts and music. But in Michigan City, they take outdoor performing arts to a new level. Their annual “Singing
Sands Sand Sculpting Festival” attracts the world’s most talented sand sculptors where they compete over the three-day festival, creating beautiful works of art on the famous “singing sands” of Lake Michigan. The festival includes live music, full bars, and a wide variety of food, crafts and merchandise, as well as a Kid’s Sand Zone. While you’re in Michigan City, check out Zorn Brew Works, known as the “outdoor music venue for craft beer lovers.”
The “Backyard at Zorn” features all types of live music in a great setting.
In downtown Valparaiso, the Valpo Blues & BBQ Festival will feature a lineup of impressive blues artists and barbecue from some of Valpo’s best restaurants. And for some free entertainment, check out the city’s Summer Concert Series and Summer Outdoor Movies where “live” characters from the movie roam around the audience.
Over in Dekalb County the Dekalb Outdoor Theatre will come to life with a variety of not-to-miss performances. This year they will range from ‘50s and ‘60s music by the Bulldogs and Black Kat Moan for blues to the Fort Wayne Ballet and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic playing popular patriotic songs.
Meanwhile in Terre Haute, fans will be “rockin’ on the river” at The Mill Event Center and Amphitheater, located on 65 acres just east of the Wabash. Owners Tim and Kelly Drake have made it their mission to maintain the land’s history, create a place to bring people together and provide topnotch entertainment with a small-town feel. This season will include acts such as Billy Currington on June 15 and Tesla on July 19.
On the campus of the Jay County Arts Place, the 2024 Hudson Family Park Amphitheatre Concert Series in Portland will take place on June 20 with Phil Dirt and
the Dozers; July 18 with the Whoa, Man! Band celebrating women in rock music; Aug. 8 with a Beatles tribute by Liverpool Lads; and Sept. 12 for a Sounds of Summer Beach Boys tribute.
For a groovy way to enjoy live music, make plans to attend Hippie Fest , a family-friendly music and arts festival featuring vibrant entertainment for all ages. You’ll enjoy hundreds of bohemian vendor booths, vintage hippie car show, DIY tie-dye, giant bubble garden, sideshow performers, kids activities, delicious food, and more. It’s taking place in Tipton September 28 and 20. Tickets are required.
The season opens in Indianapolis in April, when Georgia Street between Capitol Avenue and South Pennsylvania Street becomes an outside community venue for music and other events. Then on April 27 the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will be at Monument Circle for an all-day event, “Symphony on the Circle.”
The downtown Indy fun will continue at SPARK , the park at Monument Circle, the first weekend in June with music, food and festivities. Tuesdays will be the day for live music, and a variety of performances from spoken-word poetry to puppet shows will be featured all season long until the close of SPARK November 3.
In Carmel, the annual PorchFest is a free, family-friendly community event where a variety of musical acts perform live on neighborhood porches. The featured musical acts range from acoustic
to electric, solo to ensemble, covering multiple different musical genres. Food and beverage vendors are available.
From May to October Morgan County has lots of outdoor entertainment going on. The Drink at the Creek Concert Series at the Cedar Creek Winery, Brew Co. and Distillery features tribute bands
playing the hits of groups such as Journey, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac, the Bee Gees, Elton John and more as well as popular regionally known bands every Saturday. The shows are family-friendly, and you’ll be able to enjoy adult beverages along with food from the Cedar Creek Eatery. Downtown Martinsville sings all summer with the Downtown
Free Concert Series. A brandnew venue just off the courthouse square at the corner of Jefferson and Pike streets will host regional bands throughout the summer and a Christian music finale in late August.
Artie Fest will feature Jake Dodds, Tyler Poe and The Volunteer Railroad at the same spot on July 27.
The free shows in Mooresville are either at Pioneer Park or Bicentennial Park , with refreshments available onsite. And at the Morgan County Fairgrounds a big country concert on June 15 stars Martina McBride, Tracy Lawrence and Diamond Rio.
Kokomo has a full lineup of free outdoor music, including the Kokomo Summer Concert Series in Foster Park, and Kokomo Riverwalk Concert Series at the Kokomo Riverwalk Stage. And don’t miss the Kokomo Park Band which has been bringing music to the community for more than a century. More than 40 musicians take the stage each week in Highland Park.
Madison has good reason to be known as Indiana’s Music City “Madison’s musical tapestry plays out against scenic backdrops that are not only a feast for the eyes but also
a harmonious delight for the ears,” said Andrew Forrester, executive tourism director.
He’s talking about small and large venues hosting weekly live music, buskers on Main Street, and worldrenowned artists who serenade the community with their brass, strings, and beautiful voices. Also each year they welcome several music festivals, including the Roostertail Music
Festival in conjunction with the Madison Regatta hydroplane boat races, this year on July 5-7. Southern rock, country and bluegrass stars will perform. Be sure to keep these on your radar too: Madison Ribberfest BBQ & Blues, MapHop Music Festival, Music in the Park at Bicentennial Park and Music at the Mansion at Lanier Mansion State Historic Site.
Folks in Orange County can head out to Castle Knoll Amphitheater between French Lick and Paoli for their first full season this year. With groups such as Vanilla Ice, C+C Music Factory and Hairball, Heath
Eric, CEO of The Eric Group, promoters of the amphitheater, says they are going to “blow the roof off” with their concerts.
“The rich heritage of the Castle Knoll Farms and the history of this area equate to something unique and special for the region,” he said. He added that in the next few years they plan to
become the premier venue for big-name acts in southern Indiana.
Another plus is that the location is close to other popular attractions, such as Wilstem Wildlife Park, Big Splash Adventure, world-class golf courses and the historic resorts. Now you can come for a concert — and then stay on for the rest of the fun.

Castle Knoll Farms is a collection of white frame barns conveniently located off US Hwy 150 between French Lick, and Paoli and was once used as a working farm providing produce and meats to the local West Baden Springs Hotel and French Lick Springs Resort dating back to the early 1920’s.
Today, the historic 20th century farm is under restoration with the Castle Knoll Amphitheater at the forefront of the revitalization of the property and is the start of bringing new life to this once
working farm. Castle Knoll Farms is owned by Fuhs Properties and Wilstem Wildlife Park, led by the father-and-daughter team of Jerry Fuhs, Carrie Berg, and Audrey Brames.
Merging a love for live music with the historic property to fill the void of an outdoor amphitheater in the region seemed to be a great starting point for the property and a dream for owner Jerry Fuhs. The natural bowl landscape of the terrain lent itself perfectly to the idea of building the amphitheater. Castle Knoll will have the capacity for approximately 8,000 fans and allow guests to view outdoor concerts, shows, and events on the grounds of this iconic landmark.

Traveling north to south on US 41, once you cross the Kankakee River, you begin your journey through Newton County. Located directly to the west is LaSalle Fish and Wildlife Area, a 3,800-acre Indiana DNR property, offering hunting, fishing, and boating opportunities. In late spring and early summer, the uninterrupted vistas of new growth corn and soybean fields create a carpet for spectacular sunrises and sunsets on what was once the home of historic Beaver Lake, which was drained in the 1880s for agricultural purposes.
Newton County was fortunate to be chosen by the Nature
Conservancy as one location for their bison conservation program. Today, the Kankakee Sands prairie restoration project is home to more than 100 bison who roam this free range prairie. Stop by the Kankakee Sands Bison viewing area and be treated to the annual renewal of prairie wildflowers and native grasses that provide home to this large herd of free ranging bison. While there, visit the guestfriendly amenities and trails on Old Bogus Island and experience an up-close look at nature. Vincennes has it going on this spring and summer, especially for people who love to experience history. A good place to start exploring might be the Indiana Military Museum, home to one of the 10 best and most comprehensive collections of military memorabilia in the country.
Spread over 14 acres are tanks, planes, vehicles, flags, battlefield relics, enemy souvenirs and more — some one of a kind, such as Gen. Dwight Eisenhower’s uniform and a French
hospital truck from World War I. Exhibits include re-created trenches and battlefield situations that bring military engagements — from the Civil War to the present — to life.
The museum is fascinating on any given day, but springtime always means honoring veterans of the two world wars. April 6-7 will see re-enactors portraying soldiers in World War I, and May 4-5 will honor World War II veterans and casualties by re-creating battles from that conflict. A similar World War II event on Aug. 31-Sept. 1 will include demonstrations and living history exhibits. Along with the “battles,” the days will be filled with speeches, memorabilia, vendors and food.
May 25-26 the area will host the Midwest’s premier Revolutionary War re-enactment, the Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous, with two battles on Saturday and two more on Sunday.
Accompanying events will include 18thcentury craftsmen creating utilitarian and artistic wares, entertainers performing shows from that era and food vendors taking participants back in time with the tasty dishes they create.
When the clashes aren’t underway, visitors can wander the grounds of the George Rogers Clark Memorial and interact with members of the North West Territory Alliance before they go inside to see the 7 1/2-foot-tall statue of Clark and the seven 28-foot murals that depict his capture at Fort Sackville
Along with all of this will be an 18thcentury fashion show, Colonel Webbs’s Band of Musick , parade of uniforms and a film at the Visitors Center. In the evening the crowd will gather at the memorial as the Ancient Fife and Drum Corps, the River Valley Colonial Fife and Drum Corps, and a trooping of the colors close the event for another year.
Carmel, Indiana was named No. 1 Small City in America by WalletHub in 2023 and the No. 1 Best Place to Live in Indiana by Niche. With so many notable destinations in the Hoosier state, Carmel continues to be the most desirable place to live and a popular destination for visitors.
With more than 100 year-round public events and multiple districts within the City’s central core, there is never a shortage of things to for both residents and visitors. While Carmel’s Christkindlmarkt and The Ice at Carter Green draw seasonal crowds from all over the world, the city’s spring and summer events can certainly hold their own.
The city’s most active districts, The Arts & Design District , Midtown and City Center, provide the perfect setting for many of the events that kick off in the springtime and run throughout festival season in Indiana. Carmel’s Arts & Design District is an Indiana Cultural District, a distinction given to areas with a high concentration of cultural assets. This is truly reflected in the types of events the city hosts including Allied Solutions’ Meet Me on Main the second Saturday of each month, a three-
day plein air painting festival, Carmel on Canvas (September 13-15) and the world-class Carmel International Arts Festival (September 28-29). The spring and summer lineup also includes the popular wine-tasting event, Art of Wine (May 18) and the always spectacular Artomobilia (September 7).
Midtown Plaza, a newer district with its distinct urban industrial look, features restaurants, retail and outdoor play areas for kids and adults. Midtown’s outdoor space includes tables and chairs for dining, lounge chairs, ping pong tables and large wooden swings surrounding a turfed area for
enjoying movies or sports events on the big screen overlooking the plaza or just relaxing in the sunshine. Events in Midtown begin in May with the Midtown Block Party (May 11) and Brews on the Boulevard (August 3). While there is plenty of free parking available in the area, Midtown is easily accessible on foot or via bicycle on the Monon Greenway. As summer winds down and the festivals continue, Carmel’s Chinese Mooncake Festival (September 21), one of the city’s most vibrant cultural event, takes place in the plaza featuring traditional dances, music and, of course, mooncakes.

“Through programming, food, music, dance, and art, Global Fest
exists to showcase and highlight the diversity that exists within our own backyard,” said event organizer Kevin Noe of West Lafayette Parks and Recreation. “The event aims to celebrate that diversity and show that while we may be different, a diverse community creates a strong, thriving environment for all.”
In the past three years, countries represented at Global Fest have included Mexico, Japan, Chile, India, Malaysia, Lebanon, Taiwan, Ecuador, Afghanistan, Romania, Guatemala,
China, Turkey, USA, Brazil, Poland, the Phillippines, Nepal, Kenya, Niger, and Saudi Arabia.

Those with adventurous palates can expect variety of tastes as the number of countries represented in Carmel’s “World of Flavors” keeps expanding. Options include cuisine from China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, India, Vietnam, Egypt, France, Italy, Mexico, Venezuela, Greece, Pakistan and more.
“One of the hallmarks of Carmel is that our central district, where
many of the restaurants are, is easily accessible on foot or on a bicycle,” explains Lustig. “The mixed-used developments with retail, residential and public gathering spaces really support an environment that is perfect for residents and visitors to be together.”

Expect wildflowers to color your travels, including more than 10 species of orchids, as well as Virginia bluebells, spring beauty, shooting star, firepink, and more.
McCormick’s Creek was Indiana’s first state park, and its spectacular scenery shouts why.
The park’s storied history lends even more reason to head to Spencer, in Owen County, to experience a place Hoosiers have flocked to since 1916.
Part of the Indiana Birding Trail, with 100 species commonly found, the 1,961-acre park offers nearly four miles of hiking, even with some closures because of the tornado that hit parts of it last spring. Trail 4, the Fire Tower Trail, leads to the structure built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Climbing it provides a bird’s-eye view of the tree-covered, rugged surroundings. The CCC also built most of the park’s shelter houses and its old stone bridge.
For a beautiful view with your feet still grounded, Trail 3 provides a look at the park’s largest waterfall and the limestone canyon for which its inn is named.
Expect wildflowers to color your travels, including more than 10 species of orchids, as well as Virginia bluebells, spring beauty, shooting star, firepink, and more.
To learn about local pre-CCC history and area life before the park, visit the
remains of Peden Farm, just off Trail 9. Nancy Peden was the daughter of John McCormick, the area’s first settler. She and her husband Jesse lived on the farm until her death. You’ll see the springhouse they used, restored by the park’s Friends group, along with the remains of their original barn and cabin.
The park’s fossilized corals tell of Indiana’s time as a shallow, tropical ocean, bits of granite swept down from Canada hint at its glacial story, and flint artifacts reflect the area’s Native American past as shared hunting grounds for the Delaware, Miami, and Shawnee.
To learn more area history, natural and otherwise, visit the Nature Center, where the tradition of Indiana State Parks’ first interpretive naturalist, Lucy Pitschler, who worked at the park, is carried on by Kody Kirby and his wide variety of programs.
Guests who want to stay overnight can choose from the comfort and history of Canyon Inn or the extra room, convenience and privacy of family cabins. Either can be reserved at IndianaInns.com or 877-LODGES-1 (877-563-4371). Doing either—or just entering the park—also gives you the chance to dine at one of the area’s best
family restaurants, the inn’s dining room, which features a giant picture window framing bird feeders.
The inn’s site was recognized as a place to get away in the late 19th century when Dr. Frederick Denkelwater bought land and built a sanitarium there. After his death in 1914, the state bought it. The park’s original inn opened in the building, it was remodeled in the early 1920s, and later changes brought new wings, a banquet room, a swimming pool, and recreation center; however, the inn still rests on the original foundations.
For updates on all the goings-on, as well as even more opportunities as work is completed, see on.IN.gov/ McCormicksCreek.
As part of the effort to revitalize McCormick’s Creek’s campground, some trees downed by the storm are being used at another must-see destination, Spring Mill State Park , to restore the flume that brings water to its historic grist mill. Such restoration is periodically needed to keep the mill operable.
Indiana’s perhaps most-versatile state park, it offers the chance to stay in one of its 177 electric campsites or visit for the day while
its historic inn is being renovated. Another Indiana Birding Trail member, the 1,672-acre park in Lawrence County near Mitchell boasts a rare blend of historic and natural wonders. The water from several cave springs led to the founding of an industrial village in the early 1800s, and today you can step back to the 1860s at the Pioneer Village, much of which was restored by the CCC. If you need to cool off while there, take off your shoes and step into the creek that powered the mill, which hovers at 55 degrees year-round.
Donaldson’s Woods Nature Preserve, along Trail 3, provides a hike through an old growth forest. If you work up sweat, head to the entrance of Donaldson’s Cave for a blast of cold air. For a wet-cave experience, take the guided boat tour through Twin Caves
For more modern area history, hit the park’s museum that honors astronaut and local product Gus Grissom. It houses the Gemini III space capsule he took into space.
See on.IN.gov/springmill for more about what you can do at this park and what awaits after its updates are complete.
Immerse yourself in nature at
The ice has melted, the birds are chattering, and plants are greening. Spring is here and state parks are a great place to enjoy the season.
Brown County State Park near Nashville, Indiana’s largest state park, offers 16,000 acres of activities and great lodging options. Immerse yourself in nature.
Make the Abe Martin Lodge your base and choose from the accommodation that suits your group best. Options range from comfortable lodge and patio rooms (some wheelchair accessible) to suites, two-story and rustic cabins. All cabins come with heat, air-conditioning and a private bath.
During the lodge’s “Spring into Savings” promotion through May 23, stay two or more consecutive nights and you’ll get 25% off. All reservations come
with wristbands for gaining admittance into the lodge’s indoor aquatic park. Certain restrictions may apply. Reserve by calling 1.877.LODGES 1 or online at IndianaInns.com
This aquatic center is no ordinary hotel swimming pool. Guests can enjoy water fun in a zero-entry pool, water slide, lazy river, water volleyball and basketball, a hot tub, whirlpool, and waterfall. Those who would rather be outside can take a dip in the Olympic-size pool in the summer, where a lifeguard is on duty. A nearby wading pool will help to entertain small children.
Two lakes beckon visitors for a different kind of fun. At 17-acre Ogle Lake you can fish for bass, bluegill, and more and you can bring your own permitted watercraft — kayaks, canoes, or a boat with a trolling motor. Seven-acre Strahl Lake isn’t large enough for boats but affords equally good fishing. Be sure to bring your license! Neither lake allows swimming.
You can also bring your own horse to ride on some 70 miles of bridle paths in the park’s rolling — sometimes steep — hills. No horse of your own? Report to the Saddle Barn for guided trail rides for guests over 7, pony rides for the little ones, and hayrides on weekends beginning in late May.
Bring your rackets and balls to take advantage of the tennis courts, or plan to organize a soccer game or other play in one of the grassy open spaces. Be sure to drop in at the Nature Center, where you’ll see a snake exhibit, bird-watching room, and other displays where you can learn about the plants and wildlife in the park and its surrounding area.
While you’re out and about, watch for white-tail deer, raccoons, foxes, gray squirrels, and wild turkeys. Other birds you’ll find here are robins, white-breasted nuthatch, bluejays, cardinals, juncos, and crows.
Hikers will appreciate the 18 miles of rugged trails that range from easy to difficult, and mountain-bikers will find 30 miles of beginner to expert trails with 400 feet of elevation change. Bring your own bike for rides through the park, if you’d like, but remember non-mountain bikes should stay on paved public roads.
BOTTOM:
If you love camping, you’ve come to the right place. The park has 401 campsites that are equipped with electricity, 17 of them wheelchair accessible. The Horsemen’s Campground has 117 electric sites, of which one is accessible, along with restrooms, shower houses, and tie-ups for six horses. At this campground are also 86 non-electric sites that come with pit toilets. Other campgrounds are for groups of families or organizations with adult leaders. A Camp Store provides snacks, souvenirs, and items you might have forgotten to bring.
Be sure to save a few hours to run into nearby Nashville. Here you’ll find a plethora of locally owned boutiques, art galleries and bookstores, wineries, breweries, and the Brown County Music Center, which features big-name acts and cover bands. Also nearby is the home of renowned Indiana artist T.C. Steele, whose house, studio, and gardens you can tour. Walking paths lead through the forest on the property.
Then head back to the lodge for a comfort-food dinner at the casual Little Gem Restaurant. Maybe after that you’ll stop in the game room or play games and cards in one of the comfortable lobbies before turning in for the night in anticipation of another Brown County day.
From underground cave cruises to paddle festivals, here’s all the fun you can have on Indiana’s waterways.
The popular phrase “Rollin’ on the River” undoubtedly brings back happy memories to those who’ve experienced the fun it can bring. But what about “Cruisin’ Down a Canal?” Happily, the Hoosier state provides all of these opportunities and more.
Miles of navigable rivers makes LaGrange County and the Shipshewana area a nobrainer place to visit for water sports and pleasurable activities. Considered one of the state’s “most adventurous” rivers, Fawn River ’s 44-mile long corridor offers turns and twists with lovely scenic views. Looking to spend the day afloat? The 10-mile span between Nevada Mills and Green Mills is six hours of smooth water enjoyment. Jessica Linder, owner of Trading Post Outfitters, loves the spacious, starry respites the county provides. “Our location here at Trading Post Outfitters is unique, because we’re situated in the middle of the Pigeon River Fish & Wildlife Area, which is almost 12,000 acres. Our trips are on the gentle flow of the Pigeon River through different landscapes, from winding woods to sprawling wetlands. You can escape into the peacefulness of nature, see an array of wildlife, connect with friends and family, and even sleep under the stars on a riverside campsite.”
For Pulaski County’s Tippecanoe River State Park , it’s all about leisurely fun. With 88 natural lakes feeding its waterway system, a slow-paced float down the river and around its bends showcases a mecca of wildlife and varied ecosystem. Feeling a bit more energetic? Grab your rod and reel and get ready for some excellent line casting and top notch fishing.
In Carroll County, there’s no lack of water fun. There’s Indiana’s official state river, the Wabash River, which weaves and bends through the county, providing a glimpse into the state’s past, present, and future.
Julia Leahy, Executive Director of Carroll County’s Destination Marketing Office has fond memories of her time on the water. “Personally, I love to kayak on the Wabash and Erie Canal, especially early in the season when the water is so incredibly clear that you can see the bottom. At certain times of the year, because it receives water from U.S. Aggregates stone quarry, the water almost has a teal color.“
Fort Wayne may be the city where Vera Bradley merchandise is made and sold, but there’s no lack of waterway fun, especially near Promenade Park , a one-of-a-kind park that joins the city’s natural rivers to
their urban center. And, their Three Rivers Festival is the secondlargest festival in the state.
“Where friends, family, and two rivers meet” is the motto for Cass County in the North Central part of the state. Filled with rich history, the confluence of the Wabash and Eel Rivers make for plenty of water experiences. When thinking of harvesting stone may bring visions of arid land, Cass County’s Kenneth Stone Quarry is a haven for scuba diving and fishing--and even offers a gorgeous waterfall.
Just off the Cardinal Greenway in Richmond is Thistlethwaite Falls, a beautiful 47-foot waterfall in the Whitewater Gorge. Both the young and young at heart enjoy the
challenge of climbing up the face of the falls and sliding down a carefully selected area. Not up for climbing the falls? River stomping is also a popular activity here.
In Montgomery County, Sugar Creek is a hub of outdoor activity. There’s the Sugar Creek Nature Park with 64 acres to explore and 4,000 feet of trails to hike. And at Sugar Creek Campground, with a ½-mile of river frontage, you can camp, canoe, kayak, go tubing, and more.
Harrison County may be the home of Indiana’s first capital city, Corydon, but it’s also the place for truly-unique water fun. Indiana Caverns’ 75-minute tour not only showcases spelunking and millions of years of underground history
in the Binkley Cave System, it culminates in a pontoon-style boat ride along its adorable river. And mark your calendar for May 31-June 2 (and a bonus trip June 3) for the annual Paddle Fest in Milltown, featuring camping, live music, great food, campfires with friends and a car show. And of course, paddling up to 37 miles in three days.
From the hills of Hoosier National Forest to the banks of the Ohio River, Perry County offers numerous outdoor adventures. Join the local group of adventure seekers, Paddle Perry, and set out to explore the area’s waterways experiencing the extraordinary beauty the region has to offer. The group often
schedules half, full-day and overnight trips. Join in the fun on July 27th as Paddle Perry hosts the 4th annual Pack A Dam Lock. This threehour paddle on the Ohio River will be packed with 100+ paddle crafts in the Cannelton Lock and Dam and cover six nautical miles.
Madison’s location right on the banks of the Ohio River make it a prime destination for waterway fun. Book a river tour on the Rockin’ Thunder, a commercial passenger vessel with comfortable seating for 20 guests plus crew. Choose a scenic river tour, a mid-week lunch excursion, or even a twoday adventure.

Parke County is perhaps best known for The Parke County Covered Bridge Festival, Indiana’s Largest Festival. This year’s dates are October 14-23, but there’s plenty to do on the waters that flow beneath those covered bridges between now and then.
How about a day of kayaking, canoeing or tubing down Sugar Creek, which indigenous Piankeshaws called Pun-go-se-co-ne or “water of many sugar trees”? Sugar Valley Canoes or Turkey Run Camping & Canoes will set you up for trips of various lengths, depending upon your ability and how long you’d like to stay out.
Start with a one-hour tubing trip or sign up for kayak or canoe excursions that go through Turkey Run State Park or Shades State Park—or both. You’ll paddle along secluded sections of Sugar Creek and pass under covered bridges and a suspension bridge during tours that cover 3, 6, 10, 12 or 15 miles. Can’t get enough? They can also plan for your outing to include camping overnight.
Along the way stop for a rest at one of the many sandbars. While you’re there, look for fossils, crinoids, rocks, and beads left behind by Native Americans.
The Raccoon State Recreation Area is surrounded by the Cecil M. Harden Lake (also known as Raccoon Lake), where the fishing is good and five launch ramps get your boat out onto the water as soon as you arrive. Here your outfitter will be Raccoon Lake Boat Rental. They’ll supply you with ski boats, pontoons, WaveRunners, tubes, and boards as well as skis, wakeboards, and whatever else you need to make your time here fun. Back on land, eight miles of hiking
trails and dramatic rock outcroppings are definitely worth staying on for a little longer, and 300 camping sites are available if you want to go back out tomorrow.
For a quieter experience, head over to Rockville Lake Park. The bass, crappie, catfish, and redear are plentiful in the 102acre lake, and only trolling motors are allowed. Cast your line and then drift as you enjoy the scenery and watch for the nesting bald eagles that occasionally come out to do a little fishing for themselves. A wheelchair-accessible pier makes it possible for everyone to take part in the activities. Also here are camping facilities, disc golf, playgrounds and swimming.
The spectacular Wabash River is also accessible from Parke County by way of the boat launches in Montezuma and Lodi. Once you’re on the water you’ll float under an old
iron railroad bridge at Montezuma that has been converted to a walking path. Beyond that a relaxing paddle through the river’s gentle bends will provide opportunities to spot turtles, great blue herons and flying Asian carp.
Montezuma was the main port for the Wabash and Erie Canal in Parke County between 1850 and 1860 and before that a trading post for the indigenous Miami people. The earth here yields five types of clay, and after the Chicago fire of 1871 much of that city was rebuilt from locally made bricks transported by train.
If you’re up for paddling 12 miles, you’ll float under a massive iron railroad trestle, still in use, before arriving at Clinton in Vermillion County. Boat ramps here make it easy to pull out your watercraft and call it a day.
