SPRING 2023

Publisher’s Letter

While this issue isn’t all about the ladies—we have dedicated our cover story to outings and adventures that will create the perfect girlfriends’ getaway. You’ll learn about places where you can host small or large groups for overnight stays, spots where you can be pampered, and some out-of-the-ordinary destinations. And, we’ll give you plenty of ideas on how to spend a few days away with your favorite gal pals.

In our feature about Indiana’s Native American heritage, we highlight special events and places where we can all learn about, and celebrate, traditions and history. You’ll read about Michael Pace, a member of the Lenape (or Delaware) Tribe, whose great-great-great-grandfather was Chief Anderson, for whom the city of Anderson was named, and how he came to be the historical interpreter at Conner Prairie’s 1816 Lenape camp.

Our state boasts a strong connection to transportation. “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” is a story that will inspire you to visit special places where you can experience first-hand such marvels as aircraft from the Cold War era, a GM Futurliner, and an exquisite train passenger car complete with 30 custom-made Tiffany glass windows. Want to go on a real train adventure? We’ll tell you how.

Also in this issue you’ll read about beach life in Michigan City and resort life in French Lick-West Baden. And, we’ve included listings of some of the best festivals coming up during the 2023 festival season.

Check out our regular sections: Destination, Outdoor, Culinary, and Arts. And as always, be sure and check out our website, travelindiana.com for even more trip ideas.

Happy and safe travels!

INDIANA’S BEST

GIRLF R IENDS’

GETAWAYS

Once in a while a gal just needs to get away and hunker down with her girlfriends. Maybe you’re celebrating a special event or milestone. Or, you simply want to continue an annual tradition of bonding with your besties...

Whatever your agenda, someplace in Indiana offers exactly what you’re looking for. Is your group active and looking for outdoor adventure? Are you more interested in museums and antiquing? Are there foodies in your crowd who would rather taste wine and eat at offbeat restaurants? It’s all right here.

A good place to start your planning might be Richmond and Wayne County, where several “Just Us Girls” packages await your selection. “The Artful Getaway,” for example includes staying at the Artist’s Retreat Guest House and learning from an artisan how to make earrings – with the materials you’ll need included. With “DIY Flowers, Friends and Fun” you’ll stay at the Seldom Scene Meadow Bed and Breakfast while you make a succulent plant living wreath or miniature fairy garden.

And that’s just the beginning. Other packages will have you hiking and biking, sleeping in mansions, antiquing, shopping and tasting wine. You’ll also receive a gift pouch with

free goodies and discounts at the stores where you’re likely to shop.

“The greater Richmond area is the perfect girlfriends’ getaway for those who seek big city character without the crowds,” said Nancy Sartain, leisure marketing director at the Richmond-Wayne County Convention and Tourism Bureau. “Women find our hub to be historic, quaint, artsy, friendly, fun and affordable.”

Noblesville resident Victoria Reinhold recently spent a few days in Richmond with some of her girlfriends. “We rented the Gennett Mansion Guest House and it was perfect for our group. We loved catching up with each other, laughing, and renewing our friendship bond,” Victoria said. “While we ventured out and took in the Richmond sites, we also really enjoyed just being together… and that’s what makes girlfriends’ getaways so special.”

Headed north? Several options will fill the bill. In Chesterton shop for textile art at Three Moons Fiberworks and work by local artists at the Chesterton Art

Center. Classes are available at both places if your group is so inclined. You can also join a workshop at Chelle’s Boutique and Garage, and shopping is good here, too –from women’s and children’s clothing to shoes, housewares and gifts. Take something home for the kids from the imaginative collection at Chesterton Toys or treat yourselves to a treasure at O’Gara and Wilson Antiquarian Booksellers. The Coffee Creek Conservancy is the place to go for hiking and bird-watching. Then when it’s time to recover, head for Serenity Salon and Spa.

Wrap up the day with a glass of suds at the 219 Taproom, or Hunter’s Brewing , where pub food on the menu includes vegan

options. Another good dining option is Abbiocco Italian Cuisine which also features the Luna Rooftop Bar. For lunch, try the Red Cup Café for deli sandwiches (glutenfree, if you like) and organic salads. Running Vines Winery offers pizza and sharable plates to go with your wine-tasting.

In nearby Valparaiso you and your girls can hit the links at Creekside and Forest Park golf courses, explore the 300acre Gabis Arboretum, visit the Brauer Museum of Art and take in a performance at the Memorial Opera House and Chicago Street Theatre. And of course, there’s fantastic downtown shopping and dining.

While you’re in the area, your tour along the South Shore Winery Trail can be organized by the South Shore Brew Bus so that everyone can sip and nobody has to drive.

Just south of Valparaiso, in Wheatfield, check out the Still Point Retreat , a secluded whole-home rental that includes a 1,500-squarefoot barn/workshop that would be ideal for arts and crafts workshops.

When it’s dinnertime check out the Industrial Revolution Eatery and Grille in Valparaiso, a themed restaurant that honors the nation’s innovators with dishes such as the Edison Burger, Patrick Henry’s Freedom Chili and Madame C.J. Walker’s Curly Mac. And be sure and plan your Valpo trip around some of their many fun events taking place throughout the year.

Also along the state’s northern tier is Michigan City, a perfect place to hit the beach. “So many who live in or visit Indiana do not realize the magnificent lakeshore we have here in Northwest Indiana,” said Katie Eaton,” president of the Michigan City Chamber of Commerce and a lifelong resident. “We invite everyone to experience this beauty and discover an amazing

beachfront in Michigan City.” While you’re outside, rent kayaks, take a boat cruise on Lake Michigan or visit Indiana Dunes National Park , one of the newest in the National Park System, for trails and hiking. If you’re here in June, don’t miss the spectacular Singing Sands sand-sculpture event. North Star Properties offers a range of rental

properties in northern Indiana, from condos to cottages steps away from Lake Michigan. At 4411 Inn and Suites you’re also close to the lake in two- and three-bedroom suites to accommodate your whole gang.

If you’d rather try your luck at the tables, however, consider staying at the Blue Chip Casino Hotel and Spa. While some of you have massages and facials, others can hang out by the slots. Or bunk in at the Brewery Lodge and Supper Club and enjoy a few hours at the Hideaway Esthetics Spa Hermanas Harmony Spa is another option.

History buffs won’t want to miss the Old Lighthouse Museum or a tour of the Barker Mansion, and

art-lovers will enjoy the Lubeznik Center for the Arts, where admission is free and exhibits change every few months. If you’ve come for peace and quiet, a stroll through the Friendship Botanical Gardens is in order.

Farther east is Shipshewana, where the big draw is immersing yourself in Amish culture. Plan to stay in the cozy rooms at Highfield Manor Bed & Breakfast , an Amish farmhouse where you’ll be treated the next morning with a homemade breakfast that features seasonal produce and locally sourced meats.

For shopping there’s Davis Mercantile, with its four floors of 21 stores that offer everything you

can imagine from clothing and home décor to candy and other delights. For more shopping in one spot, the Big Red Barn is home to shops that also carry a wide variety of products, many of them made by local Amish artisans. The Shipshewana Visitors Center will provide a map to an “Off the Beaten Trail” route that will guide you deep into Amish culture and small shops where artisans sell their wares.

While you’re shopping, stop for lunch at Millie’s Market Café

inside the Davis Mercantile. At dinnertime, however, Destination 814 is the place for made-fromscratch dinners and a bourbon bar – or maybe you’d prefer dinner and a show at the Blue Gate Theatre

Since food and drinks are always an important part of a girls’ trip, Kosciusko County has created three Sip & Savor Passports: a Breakfast Trail, Taco Trail, and Sipping Trail to provide you with a fun guide to the best restaurants in the area, many of which offer exclusive discounts to passholders.

Of course, shopping is typically an essential component when it comes to girlfriends getaways, so the ladies will be thrilled to know the Vera Bradley Annual Outlet Sale is back for 2023. This iconic sale will be

held June 14-16 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne.

In Noble County, plan a trip around the Annie Oakley Perfumery where you can tour the factory and create your own personal fragrance at their worldclass organic mixing bar. Stay at the nearby historic Kimmell House Inn Bed & Breakfast , situated on 12 country acres.

In Lafayette-West Lafayette, be sure and include a Beyond the Vines tour as part of your getaway. This tour company offers full-day winery excursions starting in Lafayette. Round out your stay here with great shopping and dinner at one of their top restaurants, including Bistro 501, an upmarket

spot serving French-influenced cuisine.

And in Wabash, your whole group can stay at The Sanctuary, a renovated 1903 Gothic style church that can accommodate overnight groups of up to 16 people.

Monroe, Brown and Bartholomew counties in the southern part of the state are also tailor-made for a gaggle of girlfriends. Any one will fill your bill, but they’re close enough together to sample all three. Bloomington is the home of Indiana University with all it has to offer, and shopping abounds around downtown’s Courthouse Square, with antiquing just a few blocks away. Booking rooms at Grant Street Inn will put you within walking distance to both

the campus and the city, and its charm, porches, and one-of-a-kind rooms have been welcoming girlfriends’ getaways for years.

For a more rustic experience, visit Brown County, where bunking in at the Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park will put you close to hiking trails and nature studies. Or check out Moondance Vacation Homes or Hills

O’Brown Vacation Rentals, where you can host your small or large group in log cabins and guest cottages located throughout the entire area. They both specialize in vacation rentals, so they make it easy to just unpack and unwind. Their rentals include everything you need, like linens, towels, kitchens, and everything in between.

In Morgan county, spend a weekend enjoying wineries, a lavender farm, lots of

live music, and more. For extra fun, plan a dinner at the funky Zydeco’s Cajun restaurant in Mooresville. Nashville, the county seat, is a renowned art colony, so plan to browse in the locally owned boutiques and galleries. At the Ferguson House, you’ll enjoy a tasty and creative lunch or dinner, and overnight stays, in the heart of downtown Nashville. This bistro and inn was originally a boarding house, but has been beautifully renovated. Columbus is known for its midcentury modern architecture, so contact the visitors center ahead of time to book tours. Cool places to stay here are the Inn at Irwin Gardens or Hotel Indigo. At some point you’ll want to tuck into a hot fudge sundae at Zaharakos Ice

Cream Parlor and Museum. Shoppers among you will want to head to Indiana Premium Outlets and the Exit 76 Antique Mall just a few miles away in Edinburgh. Farther south still is historic Corydon in Harrison County. Pick up a map at the Blaine H. Wiseman Visitors Center and find your way to the historic buildings that made up Indiana’s first state capital. For entertainment visit Zimmerman’s Art Glass, where you can watch demonstrations and take something home from the gift shop. Have breakfast at KentJava Bar that serves fresh-roasted coffee and pastries and taste wine at the Turtle Run Winery and Best Vineyards. Along the Ohio River is historic Madison, which holds the distinction

of being the nation’s largest contiguous historic landmark district. It’s here you’ll find blocks and blocks of local shopping and dining options. Add in the area’s art galleries, museums, wineries, and spas, and you have the perfect combination for a girlfriends’ getaway.

French Lick-West Baden is a girlfriends’ getaway dream. Their two resorts offer world-class spas where you can get pampered with an array of treatments. Or, for an experience unique to the area, soak in a famous Pluto or Sprudel bath. If your itinerary doesn’t include a spa day, both hotels have indoor/outdoor pools and hot tubs that hit the spot for relaxation. Rent a surrey cart, which is sure to provide some laughs for everyone as you explore some of the resort’s 3,200 acres together.

While Vincennes and Knox County attract history buffs, the area is a must-

visit for its shopping, restaurants, and specialty attractions. Be sure and plan time to visit Little Hill Flower Farm, where you can pick and design your own floral arrangements.

If the outdoors is your thing, explore Squire Boone Caverns, Indiana Caverns and Marengo Cave. Canoe down the Blue River, hike or bike the 25 miles of trails O’Bannon Woods State Park or test your skill at Squire Boone Caverns Zipline Adventures. Accommodations here range from camping and cabins to the historic Kintner House B&B in downtown Corydon.

Celebrating Indiana’s Native American Heritage

It’s family, and tradition, and definitely a chance to share his heritage. So Michael Pace attends the Andersontown Native American Powwow each fall. This year’s event, open to the public, is Sept. 9-10 in Alexandria. Chief Anderson, for whom the city of Anderson is named, was Pace’s great-great-great-grandfather. So the Andersontown Powwow is special to him.

“It’s a celebration of inter-tribal culture,” he said. “Really, a celebration of warriors. We’re honoring our warriors and we dance for them. We’re also honoring our individual cultures. We’re passing on our traditional arts, clothing, songs, and language.”

And, he continued, it’s a way to defeat some of the stereotypes. “Hollywood has distorted things for years. When I was young and we went to the movies to watch those old Westerns on Saturdays, we always rooted for the cowboys because the Indians were so mean.”

Pace lives in Oklahoma and is a member of the Lenape (or Delaware) Tribe, now headquartered there. More than 30 years ago he was invited to visit Anderson University because he’s a direct descendant of Chief Anderson.

Conner Prairie heard about him. The Fishers living history museum was starting a pilot school program about the Native American presence in Indiana’s history and asked Pace to be part of it. In 2003 he became a historical interpreter at Conner Prairie’s 1816 Lenape camp, and he’s there during its outdoor season. He invites visitors to learn about the Lenape. “And yes,” he says, “I will teach you how to throw a tomahawk.”

The first Andersontown powwow was in 2004. It came about because a Native American visitor asked what the city did to commemorate its Native American history, especially since it was named for Chief Anderson. “The community realized it needed to do something to honor its past,” said Debbie Webb of Anderson, who joined a group to make it happen.

TDanville will host National Powwow XVIII July 6-9 at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds. Held every three years in changing locations, it includes inter-tribal dancing, singing, workshops, craft and food vendors. Participants can experience a tipi village, parade, and kids’ powwow. he Bridgeton Rendezvous, on April 29-30 in Parke County, is a living history reenactment of the dates 1750 to 1840. It will feature around 50 historically accurate encampments and hands-on demonstrations about the French, Americans, and Native Americans.

Another 1750 reenactment is Post Miami, on Aug. 27, at Old Fort Wayne in Fort Wayne. During the French and Indian War, the Old Fort was a French outpost known as Post Miami. The French and British clashes will be demonstrated; also, fur traders, Native Americans, civilians, and soldiers will demonstrate daily activities.

The Feast of the Hunters’ Moon, at Fort Ouiatenon in West Lafayette Oct. 7-8, is another reenactment. Event manager Leslie Martin Conwell said visitors often wear clothing they think might fit the time frame of 1717-1791, but there are quality control guidelines for registered participants. The term is period clothing or, for Native Americans, regalia.

SEPTEMBER 9 AND 10

Beulah Park • Alexandria

visitandersonmadisoncounty.com

Since 2004, Native American history and culture has been celebrated the second weekend of September in Madison County. The Andersontown Powwow and Indian Market honors this heritage by showcasing dance, art, music, storytelling and so much more. Visitors to this annual festival learn about the lifestyles of the Delaware, Miami, and Lenape tribes. They experience their dances, hear about their customs, eat Native American foods, and marvel at the arts and crafts. Children hunt for arrowheads, take part in creating artwork, and listen as birds of prey are shown to them. Learning takes place in a joyful and welcoming atmosphere. This year’s event takes place September 9 and 10 at Beulah Park in Alexandria.

Madison County is rich with the stories of great chiefs who traveled from Pennsylvania and Ohio to make their homes along Madison County’s waterways. The stories of these great Chiefs are chronicled by the Madison County Historical Society.

Long before the Delaware inhabited Madison County, from 1,000 to 200 BCE, the Adena culture left their imprint on Madison County. The Hopewell culture stemmed from the earlier Adena. The Adena-Hopewell are most famously known as the Mound Builders who constructed the Great Mound in 250 BCE and others that may be seen at Mounds State Park in Anderson. Come to Chesterton and Make Spring Your Thing

As the sun warms cold bones and blooms the earth’s browns and grays to green, there’s no better place in Northwest Indiana to come for a spring fling than Chesterton.

Start your day early with a wildflower hike. Try the Old Heron Rookery at Indiana Dunes National Park , or Trails 2 & 10 at Indiana Dunes State Park, to experience the pageantry, whimsy, and lacework of these most delicate harbingers of spring.

Or, if you like your colors on the wing and in flight, grab your binoculars for some of the finest migratory birding in the Midwest, as scores of species winging their way north to their annual breeding grounds stop to rest and refresh in the woodlands, wetlands, and prairies of the Indiana Dunes, just a 10-minute drive from Downtown Chesterton.

For a full weekend of avian activities— including guided visits to the region’s hotspots, workshops, and the Migration Marketplace—the annual Indiana Dunes Birding Festival, Thursday through Sunday, May 11-14, offers seasoned and novice birders alike an unparalleled opportunity to add rare and bejeweled species to their lists. Register at www.indunesbirdingfestival.com

Two prime birding spots right in Chesterton, peaceful and lovely yet hardly remote, are the Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve and—a superb place to relax and watch a sunset—the Westchester Migratory

Bird Sanctuary

After a day in the field, make Chesterton your home base, with a variety of lodging accommodations available and an excellent choice of casual-fine or family dining: Abbiocco Italian Cuisine, Lucrezia

Cafe, Ivy’s Bohemia House, Octave Grill, Gastro 49 Pub & Eatery, (219) Taproom, and the Chesterton Brewery

You’ll find historic Downtown Chesterton well worth a visit as well, with a variety of shops: Chelle’s Boutique & Garage, O’Gara & Wilson Antiquarian Booksellers, Chesterton Toys, Tethan’s Candy & Confections, The Flower Cart , and Yesterday’s Treasures, to name only a few.

And don’t forget that Chesterton is home to two of the most respected outdoor markets in the region: Coffee Creek Farmers Market , 3 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday, beginning April 19; and the European Market , 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday, beginning May 6. Come to Chesterton and make spring your thing.

Hidden gems

waiting to be discovered along the South Shore

Planning a getaway in Indiana but want to find some new places off the tourist path? Check out the hidden gems along the south shore of Lake Michigan, which will breathe new life into your adventures.

Travel brings out the pioneer in all of us, sparking a need to be the first to discover someplace new. Which begs the question: “Can you still find places around the world— and more specifically, Indiana—like that?” The answer is a resounding…Yes, absolutely As small as the world seems, it’s still a huge place to explore. Many a hidden gem is still waiting for you. They’re just, well, sometimes harder to find.

One of the not-so-hidden gems along the shoreline in northern Indiana is the Indiana Dunes. But what you may not know is that there’s a lot more than the 18 miles of beautiful beaches in these National and State Parks. Known for its striking plant and bird diversity, it’s easy to find inspiration throughout their 17,000+ acres.

Along the shoreline you will see the perfect sunset from the rooftop cantina at Sunset Grille and five stunning Century of Progress Homes, which were originally built for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. You can tour these homes once a year in September but it sells out quickly.

A day of exploration can be tiring and you may need some libations and good food. You’ll find just that right next to the dunes at Goblin & the Grocer. Another spot to check out is Brewery Lodge & Supper

Club. This boutique hotel is surrounded by 40 acres of woods and includes a restaurant, day spa, and a craft beer and wine bar. You can also get a sour beer at Fuzzyline Brewing , stop in for a sweet tasting at Manic Mead. Wine. Cider., or listen to live music while sipping a glass of wine at Carpenter Creek Cellars

If you’re looking for something different, try out the Region Cat Café. Not only do they offer delicious soups, sandwiches and bakery items in a cat-free dining room with a view of the cat lounge, but you can reserve a spot to go play with the kitties for a purrrfect afternoon. You might even find a friend you want to adopt.

Tucked away you can find the 575-acre Buckley Homestead schoolhouse and barn with live animals, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, or you can stroll the historic Lake County Courthouse Shops to find some unique gifts. Walk

through history at Community Veterans Memorial, or enjoy outdoor works of art from artists around the world at the Art Mural Trail - #RenArtWlk

No matter your interests, the South Shore has something for everyone. Jerry Seinfeld famously said “Sometimes the road less traveled is lesstraveled for a reason!” and he’s right. If it was easy, everyone would do it.

So, what are you waiting for? There are tons of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Visit alongthesouthshore. com for a full list of our hidden gems and upcoming events & festivals.

Indiana’s Transportation History All Around the State

Nestled between the cornfields that line US-421 outside of Monon, a hidden gem protects almost two century’s worth of railroad artifacts. The Monon Connection Museum is much more than just a roadside attraction—it’s one man’s accumulation of priceless pieces of history from the Hoosier state and beyond.

What started out as the late Dale Ward’s private collection quickly morphed into a full-blown museum, complete with a train-themed restaurant—The Whistle Stop —in the early 2000s. Ward’s daughter, Nikki Wireman, is now carrying on her father’s legacy as owner of the museum.

“Mr. Ward started collecting railroad memorabilia because he thought the railroad was an important part of our country’s history,” said Mark Reynolds, the museum’s curator. “He started collecting in 1994, and his wife finally said, ‘Dale get it out of here.’ He rented a storage facility, and then we eventually opened up in 2005.”

Inside the museum, railroad enthusiasts will find everything from collections of conductor hats, bells, lanterns, signs, keys, and railroad badges, as well as a full-size replica of an Illinois Central Depot. There’s also a huge HO scale model train layout in one room and a beautiful collection of dining car china in another.

“It’s probably the largest public display of dining car china in the United States,” said Reynolds. “It’s not just from Indiana or just from the Monon, but it’s from all across the country.”

The museum’s newest acquisition is an 84-foot-long passenger car that wealthy businessman Henry Flagler built for his wife in the late 1890s. When Flagler contracted the Jackson & Sharp Company to build the car, he sent them a blank check and said, “I want the best money can buy!”

The exquisite passenger car is the perfect fulfillment of Flagler’s wishes, complete with 30 custom-made Tiffany glass windows, beautiful handcarved woodwork, and a marble onyx fireplace—one of the first fireplaces to ever be installed in a train car.

Outside the museum, several railroad cars, railroad cranes, cabooses and signs beckon visitors to explore and take a selfie with a piece of history.

Train excursions are also a popular way for railroad enthusiasts to spend a day in the Hoosier state. You can ride in style on the Spirit of Jasper, which departs from the Jasper Train Depot. Three renovated, climatecontrolled lounge cars have restrooms, comfortable seating and a cash bar. The depot is a replica of the former structure built in 1906, and features an old-fashioned ticket window, rolltop desks, pot belly stove and authentic memorabilia.

The Indiana Railway Museum currently operates as the French Lick Scenic Railway, running passenger trains over 25 miles from French Lick to Jasper. Because the train IS the museum, visitors get a firsthand experience of how railway travel impacted both passengers and the world around them. Popular events include the Scenic Tours, the Dinosaur Adventure Train, Summer Splash Bash, Polar Express and more.

All aboard the Whitewater Valley Railroad, where riders can travel from Connersville to the charming canal town of Metamora every Saturday and Sunday between May 1 and October 31. Themed events like the Polar Express, Easter Bunny Express, Pumpkinliner and more are popular with adults and kids alike. Take an hour and a half ride through the countryside on the Nickel Plate Express, which features themed excursions from February through December aboard historic Santa Fe El Capitan cars. The train departs from Forest Park in Noblesville.

In Michigan City, the Barker Mansion’s “Legacy of Freight” exhibit will take you through Michigan City from the 1830s to the early 1900s. The exhibit is a tribute to the Haskell & Barker freight car factory and its workers.

In Starke county, visit the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum which offers train rides on an authentic caboose. The county also celebrates their transportation heritage with the Yellowstone Trail Festival each August in the community of Hamlet, which was on the Yellowstone Trail–

the first transcontinental automobile highway in the United States.

If air travel is more your style, a visit to the Grissom Air Museum in Peru is a must. Visitors can explore historic aircraft from the Cold War era, take off in a simulator, or climb the observation tower. Guided tours are led by former military guides who have either served at Grissom Air Base or have lived in the area long enough to know the special stories visitors want to hear.

At the Wilbur Wright Birthplace and Museum in Hagerstown, you’ll see the birth home of Wilbur Wright as well as a full-size replica of the 1903 Wright Flyer. Complete with hand carved propellers, the replica took 10 years to build.

Over in Muncie, check out the largest collection of model aircraft in the United States at the National Model Aviation Museum. During the summer months (May - September), visit the 1,000-acre flying site and see the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) members fly their aircraft in competitions. The museum building is actually the museum’s largest artifact, constructed for the Auburn Automobile Company in 1929 from a design by A.M. Trails, Waterfalls, and Other Outdoor Adventures

Spring has sprung, with Mother Nature beckoning to anyone who enjoys fresh air and sunshine, and Wabash County is the ideal place to play outside.

Wabash County is a destination for outdoor adventure enthusiasts,” said Biz Bishop, content manager at Visit Wabash County. “We have a variety of experiences and events available year-round.”

One reason for this is the Wabash River Trail, a seven-mile paved stretch connecting Wabash and neighboring Lagro that serves as a hub for like-minded trail lovers. Locals and visitors alike can walk, run, bicycle, push a stroller or move by wheelchair without cross traffic, and the trail is the gateway to lots of other al fresco activities, too.

The WRT was the brainchild of Wabash resident Amy Ford, who cycled between the two towns and dreamed of a trail that would follow the Wabash River. Meanwhile, Justin Gillespie was looking for a way to start a business that would benefit the residents of the Lagro area where his family has lived for generations. The two teamed up, and local residents joined in to create a

pastoral thoroughfare that has lead to the transformation of a community.

The main trail gives rise to scenic and historic points of interest. This means more opportunities for bird-watching and photography. The Eilts’ Hideaway near the Hill Street trailhead, for example, is a

great place for viewing bald eagles and other river wildlife, and the boat launch in Lagro provides opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing.

Several new businesses have sprung up along the river trail that make a visit here even more enjoyable. Gillespie

and his family and friends renovated an abandoned 19th-century house to create the 950 Speakeasy Bistro, which serves pizza and cocktails and provides live entertainment on the weekends. They also rescued an 1815 “canal house,” one of only six remaining and the only one with its original structure built by Irish immigrants who had come to work on the Wabash and Erie Canal. Today it is a rustic-chic Airbnb accommodation that has been renamed Riparian House

White Rock Recreation is a whiteglove service kayak and canoe rental business that also features amazing ice cream, smoothies and sundaes. Opening for the season in April and running through early fall, White Rock Recreation can handle groups of any size and it’s a great way to enjoy a float either on the Wabash

River or in a glass with rootbeer!

For community members and visitors seeking outdoor activities, Alley Cat Outfitters, started by Luke and Melissa Kalbfell, is set to open in Wabash in June 2023. Located just off the trail, the shop will provide everything you need to go on an adventure. Whether you want to go camping for a weekend at Salamonie, build up your endurance to ride in the Dam to Dam Century ride, or simply rent a bike to ride to Lagro for ice cream, Alley Cat Outfitters will have you covered.

Wonderful as the trail is, it isn’t the only place to enjoy the out-of-doors in Wabash County. Several waterfalls and their environs also await your discovery. Hathaway Preserve at Ross Run also offers reef fossils, exposed bedrock, and cliffs as high as 75 feet. You’ll find Kissing Falls tumbling over rock formations at the end of a 1.5mile hiking loop in Kokiwanee Nature Preserve, and Charley Creek Falls is located in Wabash City Park. Plan to bring a picnic and take the kids to the playground while you’re here. Salamonie State Park offers camping, fishing, hiking, and bridle trails in addition to the must-see falls, and Matlock Falls along Treaty Creek are accessed by way of Matlock Cemetery, both named for Wabash’s first mayor. A good place to wind up your day in the open air is Charley Creek Gardens, which have a waterfall of its own and is also located right in town.

Whether you prefer your trail paved or natural, Visit Wabash County’s website will set you on the right path to experience the great outdoors in the most memorable way.

Michigan City Getaway Lake Michigan and so much more

It’s beach living, Michigan City style.

That’s Michigan City, Indiana, on the shore of Lake Michigan, just east of the Indiana Dunes National Park & State Park. With one of the best beaches along the Hoosier lakeshore, it has options for any interest or budget.

Start with Beachwalk, a stunning surprise that evokes scenes of oceanside beaches far to the south. Think summery colored houses, yellow next to blue next to lavender. It’s a neighborhood of 200 homes with more than 100 offered to vacationers. “A hidden gem,” says Leanne Washluske of Beachwalk

Vacation Rentals

But Lake Michigan, a walk across Lake Shore Drive at Bus Stop 7, is clearly the star. No buses run nowadays, but the bus stop signs remain and people use them as meeting spots, as in “Meet me at Stop 7” or “I live near Stop 11.” Clever.

Private Vrbo and Airbnb houses are plentiful, along with hotels and additional rental options

boat launch, and public fishing. There is a parking fee.

The park is popular yearround, but the peak season is of course summer. Sunset Grille opens in May.

And always, special events. The Singing Sands Sand Sculpting Festival debuted last year with a professional sand sculpting competition and exhibition. Visitors were beyond wowed; the city is already buzzing about this year’s June 9-11 festival.

Also popular is the return of Oktoberfest , on Labor Day weekend. Michigan City native Terry Greetham lived away for years, returned a couple years ago, and is the city’s director of events. “For many years this was a summer town,” he says. “I want it to be year-round.”

Other big draws are Blue Chip Casino and Lighthouse Place Premium Outlet Mall

in town. One popular rental agency is North Star Properties, which offers a variety of cottages and condos, some with views of Lake Michigan.

To the west, still along Lake Shore Drive, is Washington Park Zoo. It opened in 1928 as a sanctuary for wildlife in need. Just beyond the zoo is Washington Park with a beach, sand dunes, lighthouse, marina and

The downtown area, especially along Franklin Street , combines Hoosier Hospitality with a surprisingly cosmopolitan feel with items from Ireland, Denmark, Italy and South Africa in shops that include Ballyea, Line Mullins Group Interior, and Darling. The flagship for the Unsalted No Sharks brand, uber-popular in the Great Lakes Region, is here.

And then there’s Good News Vintage, where you’re sure to find exactly what you aren’t looking for. Owner Amy Bowman is as quirky as her merchandise. She’s all aflutter about the filming of the movie “Bulls,” by city

native Dan Meyer, because her shop will be among sites included. As for the plot, think struggling bar and a world championship dartthrowing competition.

The Market on 12 – that’s U.S. 12 – is filled with locally-made art that includes jewelry, clothing, and home décor.

Eateries range from beach-y places to more grown-up spots. The specialty at Patrick’s Grille, a 21-and-over-only restaurant/bar, is steak, but there’s also a surprising list of worldwide items that include Greece’s Flaming Saganaki. It’s cheese like you’ve never had it before. Other dining options include Leed’s Public House and Fiddlehead

Spring kicks off festival season in Indiana—a time to experience the sounds, tastes, and smells of the dozens of festivals and special events taking place all throughout the state. You’ll find food festivals, cultural festivals, farmers markets, and everything in between.

Given the number of food festivals happening in northern Indiana, you can taste your way through festival season. There’s the wildly popular Pierogi Fest in Whiting, Kielbasa Fest in East Chicago, and in Valparaiso they have events to celebrate popcorn, chocolate, and barbecue. In White County, there’s the Monon Food Fest A celebration of mint? Of course! In North Judson, the 45th annual Mint Festival is a three-day festival featuring lots of special activities, including how to cook with mint.

While you’re in the area, don’t miss Hammond’s Festival of the Lakes with free concerts, polka party, food vendors and more.

Also in northern Indiana, you’ll find two unique festivals in Noble County. The Mother’s Day Annual Kite Day takes place at the Windmill Museum in Kendallville, and admission is free. And at the town’s Fairy, Gnome, and Troll Festival you can meet Tinkerbell, enjoy a bubble party, attend a fairy tea party, and more. And in Peru, the town will celebrate its own hometown legend at this year’s Cole Porter Festival June 9-13.

In Central Indiana, one of the biggest festivals of the year is taking place May 27. The Indy 500 Festival Parade features larger-than-life floats, marching bands, and of course the 33 drivers competing in this year’s Indy 500 race.

April in southern Indiana means the dogwoods will be in bloom, and it’s a reason to celebrate. The town of Orleans is known as the “Dogwood Capital of Indiana” and the Orleans Dogwood Festival takes place April 22-29. Perry County’s Annual Dogwood Weekend, April 22-23, is in its 65th year.

Southern Indiana is also home to the Indiana Wine Fair, held each year at the Story Inn in Nashville. The event features some of Indiana’s best wineries, along with food trucks and vendors.

And don’t miss out on all the local farmers markets that will start popping up all over the state. While they’re open year-round, the Yorktown Farmers Marketplace, voted #3 farmers market in Indiana, opens their summer outdoor market May 19.

Once a year, a Legend returns to his hometown.

Popular Drink Company has Roots in Indiana

Matt Whiteside, CEO of Circle Beverage in Indianapolis, founded the company in 2015 because he wanted to create products that were better for people than the sweet soft drinks they had been drinking.

When Matt Whiteside thought about the company he would eventually create, he asked himself “how do we make products in Indiana that are good for people,” and, “how do we build a company with great career opportunities that will enrich the people who live here?”

He’d worked for Coca-Cola and then at Rolls-Royce Aerospace, but as a Type1 diabetic since he was 3 years old, he was continuously searching for a drink that would taste great without harming his body. When he looked into the subject further, he found that trends indicate most people prefer to ingest healthconscious products.

He went back into the beverage business and created Circle Beverage, with a focus on Kombucha, a combination of a probiotic, yeast, and acetic acid that originated in China, where it was thought to have healing properties. It is a fermented tea product, much like beer and wine, except that it is non-alcoholic and healthy.

“It’s fizzy, flavorful and a great alternative to sugary beverages on the market,” Whiteside said.

Circle Beverage Kombucha comes in such flavors as Ginger Lemon, Pomegranate, Peach Blossom and Mango Turmeric, but that isn’t all they make. In 2020 the company introduced a new product, Circle Sparkling Collagen Water.

“Collagen is present in skin, nails, hair, bones, joints and ligaments,” Whiteside said, “but most people don’t have enough.”

He and his colleagues researched the subject and came up with the tasty water

that has 18 grams of collagen in every can and comes in such flavors as Watermelon Thyme, Lemon Mint, Vanilla Pear and Raspberry Hibiscus. Circle Beverage products are distributed to stores such as Giant Eagle, Walmart, Whole Foods and CVS across Indiana and the Midwest.

The company is also the contract manufacturer for other brands. While Whiteside said he can’t disclose which ones they are, he makes sure they are healthy, functional, clean-energy, tea-based products.

“It’s fun to put our expertise into supporting other companies who have the same vision,” he said.

He said the company calls itself the “better for you” beverage manufacturer. At this point they don’t do tastings like wineries and breweries do, but they participate in marketing activities such as samplings and event sponsorships.

Event sponsorships are a key component to the company’s marketing activities.

84 traveliN Spring 2023

The second part of their goal – to provide enriching careers – has become a reality, too. They currently have 25 full-time employees on a team that is constantly growing. One of their top priorities is equality – a belief that all people are of significant and equal value and a commitment to anti-racist education and diversity in communities. They are working toward B Corp certification, which means they operate according to high social, environmental and legal principles.

The company is also as serious about its employee culture as it is about its products. They prioritize safety, embrace challenge and change, and encourage employees to find balance in their lives. And how could anyone looking for a job – or something good to drink – resist the banner on Circle’s website that claims “We have fun. A lot of fun. Too much fun.”

SPRING is the Season for Public Art

Public art is a term with different meanings for different people. Some prefer to call it art in public spaces. Often outdoors but not always, and free to the general public. Important events and important personas live forever in stone, marble, bronze, clay, and plastics. Indianapolis is considered to have more monuments and memorials dedicated to veterans than any other city except Washington, D.C. Among them are the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, Indiana World War Memorial, USS Indianapolis Memorial, and Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial

Statues immortalize individuals and events that are serious – and not so serious. A couple of sculptor Seward Johnson’s popular likenesses sit on benches in Carmel, while more

works of art created by painting a large single piece of wood with a quilt block pattern, then hanging it on the side of a barn or other structure. Barn quilt exhibitors go through an application process to become part of the

Towns around Indiana are embracing the public art movement by turning once dark alleys into “Artist Alleys.” Two great examples are Fort Wayne and Kokomo. In fact, a once dark, forgotten alley in Kokomo has materialized into an industrial, outdoor art gallery that enlivens the downtown landscape. And all around Indiana, murals are popping up on old buildings and even—in Putnam County—on grain silos.

offer lifelike glimpses into ordinary activities. The statues are often mistaken for real people when they’re first sighted.

In Grant and Delaware counties, the Garfield Trail features the famous feline in fun outfits and playful situations. These fourfoot statues are not only fun to find, but make for the perfect selfie.

In LaGrange and Marshall Counties, you’ll find Barn Quilt Trails. Barn quilts are unique

trail; once approved, each chooses a pattern and colors for a 4-foot or 8-foot square block to hang. Volunteers pitch in to help with the design and painting upon request.

Brigette Cook Jones of Hancock County Tourism says public art is becoming more popular and adds “You can interact with it, more so today because we have smartphones.” She said the top three tourism-related photos are of food, signs, and statues – with people in the photos. It makes her definition of public art broad and includes signs, banners, even manhole covers. The Riley bench in Greenfield is one of the more popular public art pieces in Hancock county, with locals and visitors alike utilizing it for selfies.

Sit-by-me statues inspire interaction. Within moments a photo can be taken and posted on social media. In addition to the Riley bench are those with Gov. Frank O’Bannon in Corydon, Desiderata poet and philosopher Max Ehrlmann in Terre Haute, automobile pioneer Elwood Haynes in Kokomo, and
