In this issue, our cover story features incredible vacation rentals all around the state. You’ll read about cabins, cottages, condos, and more where you can book your own little getaway, or something for a group of friends and family…and still stay away from the crowds. You’ll learn about rustic cabins tucked in the woods, lakefront homes, a loft in an 1865 warehouse building, a lodge located in a buffalo preserve, and so much more. This issue will help you discover some of Indiana’s grandest mansions, where the history of their owners is matched only by their beautiful architecture. These homes are now open to the public, allowing visitors to transport back in time and experience what is was like to live a lavish lifestyle around the turn of the century. Accommodations throughout Indiana offer enjoyable staycation getaways without the crowds story by Glenda Winders

“People are bored sitting at home and itching to get out,” said Sara Petri-Jones, office manager at Moondance Vacation Rentals in Brown County. “They’re looking for a safe and enjoyable place where they can relax and unwind.” The 30-plus properties her company handles include cabins that range from one-bedroom to six as well as a farmhouse and two spots on Lake Monroe. Owners have intensified their cleaning protocols and upgraded their Wi-Fi so that families can take advantage of midweek rates while they do their jobs or go to school online. More than half are petfriendly, and the majority have hot tubs and fireplaces. At Swan Lake Resort Cabins in Plymouth guests stay in twostory rustic log cabins tucked into a wooded area. Each cabin sleeps six to eight people and has a full kitchen or kitchenette. A horseshoe pit and fire ring provide reasons to go outside.

Start your day with a bike ride or brisk stroll down the Panhandle Pathway, a 23-mile paved walking and biking trail. The Pathway follows the old railbed of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

After you set up camp, you’ll want to take in the view from the fire tower, hike a trail or two, fish or relax at the campsite. Or if camping isn’t quite your thing, check into the Tortuga Inn Bed and Breakfast which is still located on the riverbank. Be sure to visit Sanders Foods in Winamac where you can get all your supplies for your relaxing getaway. Plus they have a great craft beer selection that won’t disappoint. Ease into the evening with a movie on the big screen at the historic Isis Theatre in Winamac.

Ready to get splattered? Visit Fort Knox Paintball, northwest Indiana’s premier themed paintball facility, home to 13 themed playing fields, plus laser tag for all of the fun with none of the mess! For lunch, it’s downtown Winamac. The facesized breaded tenderloin and selection of 100-plus beers at One-Eyed Jack’s are fan favorites, while Sublime Subs’ fresh sandwiches and salads will refuel you for a day of adventure. Next, off to Kersting’s Cycle Center & Museum in north-central Pulaski County to check out nearly 100 antique and otherwise historical motorcycles from nine decades and eight countries. You won’t be far from the Peaceable Primate Sanctuary (but call in advance if you want to visit our resident baboons)!

Just south of Winamac, Kostas provides ample portions of standard breakfast fare but also offers a Greek twist to the menu. Canoe, kayak, or float on the Tippecanoe River. It’s named one of the top 5 most biologically important rivers in North America, based on the cleanliness of its water. Let the kiddos run off that last bit of energy at the Winamac Town Park. It’s surrounded on 3 sides by the river and has an awesome playground that features a “swinging bridge” called the Memorial Suspension Bridge.

Swing by Tippy’s for pizza and a cold draught, or check out Indiana’s oldest family-owned tavern, Bill & Babe’s (21 and over only), known for its greasy cheeseburgers and amazing fried fish. traveliN Staycation 2021

Farewell to Winter, Spring Ahead… During the long winter months, you may grow weary of being inside most of the time. But late winter melts into early spring right before our eyes! If you open your eyes to possibilities, there are many ways to enjoy the cooler weather, while anticipating the arrival of warmer days, emerging flowers and outside fun. Here are a few ideas of how you can make this transitional time a blast of fresh air and fantastic fun.

A Straightforward Guide for Manly Fun… O.K., guys, pack-up your golf clubs, bring your fishing gear, or brave a motorcycle ride to White County and let the adventures begin. When the weather breaks in March, be ready with your golf clubs to hit the greens. Located on Lake Shafer, the Tippecanoe Country Club has been in existence since the 1920’s. In the 1960s, the course was renovated and converted to an 18-hole course by Indiana golf course designer, the legendary Pete Dye. Located on-site are a golf pro shop, a bar, and an event venue. Also, in Monticello, Pine View Golf Course and Pro Shop is a family course. Founded in 1985, the course is challenging, perfect for the long ball hitter, although playable for those of any skill level. Fun is the name of the game at Pine View. Year-round, Lakes Shafer and Freeman are a fisherman’s paradise. Find the gear you need at Ace Hardware, Rural King or Twin Lakes Fish & Game. Check out www.enjoywhitecounty for details on public boat access. The lakes are home to walleye, channel catfish, white bass, and white crappie, to name a few. Did you know Indiana’s premier motorcycle magazine is headquartered in White County? Thunder Roads, a magazine with events and articles that pertain to Indiana riders, is owned by Rudy and Selina Vargus. The couple also own Whiskey & Wine Saloon in Monticello, where there is amazing food and fantastic fun! Check out the events and helmet-up!

The Girl’s Guide to Exploring… White County invites you to Wolcott where Timeless Treasures features an array of antiques, clothing and home décor. Country Tan N’ Things offers eclectic home decor and knick-knacks. And, yes, there are tanning options! A new addition in Wolcott is quaint Rustic Rose which is founded on three components…Reclaim-RestoreRepurpose. Their home décor selection will inspire you to redesign your home or office. Enjoy a lunch break at Roots, a family owned farm-to-table restaurant. The beef and pork on the menu are raised on the Furrer family farm and are worthy choices to delight your taste buds!

Your next overnight getaway could be to Indiana’s first state capitol, historic Corydon in beautiful Harrison County. Take a historic tour, explore caves, experience the outdoors, enjoy unique shops, sample local wines, and much more.

Historic Downtown Corydon

outdoor adventure

Established in 1808, the town of Corydon served as Indiana’s first state capitol from 1816 to 1825. This history is palpable when you walk the town’s storied streets, with most of the buildings dating to the 1800s. The Corydon Capitol State Historic Site tours include the capitol building and governor’s headquarters. Learn more about the area at the Harrison County Discovery Center, where you’ll find interactive, immersive displays including a 360-degree projection of a reenactment of the only Civil War battle fought on Indiana soil, the Battle of Corydon. While downtown, Visit Zimmerman Art Glass to see a free glassblowing demonstration and pick up a one-of-a-kind souvenir. The Artisan Center, features ceramics, woodworking, and fine art from around the county available for purchase. Enjoy sweets, coffee, a meal and more at some of our local shops and restaurants: 1816 Modern Kitchen & Drinks, Beaver Street Brick Oven and Grill, Butt Drugs’ classic soda fountain, KentJava, and White House Candy.

There’s more to scenic southern Indiana than meets the eye—below rolling hills, beautiful forests, and rich farmland lies a network of caves containing Ice Age bones, underground streams, and fascinating biodiversity. Experience it for yourself on tours of Indiana Caverns, Marengo Cave, and Squire Boone Caverns. Tours are guided and the caves are easy to traverse (with steps), so all you need are comfortable shoes and a light jacket. The caves remain around 54 degrees year-round, making them a perfect activity for summer and winter alike.

Squire Boone Caverns Zipline Adventures offers the longest zip in the region. You’ll fly through the forest canopy and over beautiful valleys. Choose from tours lasting 1 ½ hours or 3 hours. The Bat Chaser at Indiana Caverns provides a thrilling gravity-powered experience akin to hang-gliding. Take in the scenic Blue River with Cave Country Canoes and Old Mill Canoe Rental. O’Bannon Woods State Park is home to hiking and mountain biking trails. Unique features such as steep hills and deep ravines, limestone bluffs, caves and waterfalls can be found along the trails or within the park, which is bordered on one side by the Ohio River.

Southern Indiana Travel the winding roads of southern Indiana to the idyllic river town of Madison, and you’ll find the city’s crown jewel, The Lanier Mansion, tucked away on a quiet side street. Overlooking the banks of the Ohio River, the Greek Revival-style mansion was built by Madison lawyer, banker, and railroad magnate James Lanier. An impressive three-story spiral staircase, Ionic columns, stunning trim and moldings, and formal gardens pull visitors through the time portal to another era. The mansion is open year-round from Wednesday through Sunday, except for certain holidays. About an hour from Madison on New Albany’s Main Street, the breathtaking Culbertson Mansion greets passersby with its stately Second Empire architecture. Guided tours of the 20,000 square foot home last around one hour and include all four floors, showcasing its awe-inspiring painted ceilings, carved staircase and elaborate plasterwork. Built in 1867 by William Culbertson, who was once considered the wealthiest man in Indiana, the Culbertson Mansion cost around $120,000 to build ($2 million in today’s economy). Both Culbertson and Lanier mansions are Indiana State Museum Historic Sites. Tours are offered Wednesday through Sunday. For more information, go to www. indianamuseum.org/historic-sites/. Once upon a time, Vincennes, Indiana was home to William Henry Harrison, the ninth president of the United States. Less than an hour’s drive from Indianapolis, Lane Place Antebellum Mansion showcases beautiful Greek Revival architecture reminiscent of the antebellum estates of the South. The home’s owner, Henry S. Lane, who was a U.S. congressman, senator and close friend of Abraham Lincoln, bought the four-acre site along with a three-room cottage in 1844 and married Joanna Elston the next year. “The Lanes lived in the cottage while the west wing of four rooms and central hall were added,” said Jill Coates-Matthews, executive director of the Montgomery County Historical Society at Lane Place. “Lane Place is a wonderful example of Victorian life— much of the home feels as if the Lanes had just stepped away for a moment.” The home is closed for the winter season and will reopen for scheduled tours in March. Visitors are asked to call ahead for tours and check the website for more information: www. lane-mchs.org.

Northern Indiana Brookside Mansion on the University of Saint Francis campus in Fort Wayne was originally the residence for industrialist John Henry Bass. The handcarved sandstone mansion, which was rebuilt after a gas explosion in 1902, was purchased by the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration along with surrounding land in 1944 to house the then-Saint Francis College. “Brookside now houses university administration offices, alumni office and fundraising offices,” said Reggie Hayes, director of external communications for the university. “The interior retains its historical décor, including a ballroom, and is available for private events. Cline Avenue Bridge Makes Travel Easier in Northwest Indiana

Lake Michigan

Residents and travelers have been looking forward to the opening of the new Cline Bridge in Northwest Indiana. As the Gateway of Lake County, its opening marks an easier way to connect the towns and destinations throughout the area. To understand the significance of the new Cline Avenue Bridge, it helps to know a little history about its predecessor. Completed in 1982, the 50

original Cline Avenue Bridge provided efficient access to Northwest Indiana’s many industrial and recreational destinations until it closed in 2009. As part of SR 912, the bridge connected to one of the most traveled highways in the country, the stretch of Interstate 80/94 known as the Borman Expressway. Those who traveled the original Cline Avenue Bridge came to rely on it as a more direct route to Chicago and

Northwest Indiana than the Borman. With the Cline Avenue Bridge out of service, traffic was forced onto local streets, accelerating street wear and increasing travel times in the surrounding communities. The need for a new bridge was apparent, however government funding for the project was unavailable. Flash forward to present day: the new Cline Avenue Bridge has been

These include casinos along the Lake Michigan shoreline, area golf courses, entertainment venues, renowned breweries and wineries, and the Indiana Dunes National Park just to name a few. When traffic is heavy on the Borman, this shortcut could save travelers up to 30 minutes and shave off over ten miles if traveling from East Chicago’s lakefront to downtown Chicago. Miller House and Garden Modern National Historic Landmark

64

Located in Columbus, Indiana, and one of the country’s most highly regarded examples of mid-century Modernist residences, Miller House was designed by Eero Saarinen, with interiors by Alexander Girard, and landscape design by Dan Kiley. Commissioned by industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia Simons Miller in 1952, Miller House and Garden was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000. The house expands upon an architectural tradition developed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—epitomizing the international Modernist aesthetic—with

an open and flowing layout, flat roof and vast stone and glass walls. The rooms, configured beneath a grid pattern of skylights supported by cruciform steel columns, are filled with strong colors and playful patterns. Amid the residence’s large geometric gardens, its grandest feature is an allée of honey locust trees that runs along the west side of the house. Columbus, Indiana, is ranked sixth in the nation by the American Institute of Architects for architectural innovation and design. National Geographic Traveler ranked Columbus as America’s most significant historic place on the strength of its architectural heritage. As a way to attract outstanding architectural talent

Staycate at a DNR cabin this New Year story and photos by Indiana Department of Natural Resources

Start 2021 right with a getaway that’s outdoorsy by day and super cozy overnight, with plenty of privacy and space to spare. The destination? A cabin at a DNR property. Each of your many options is nestled in a spectacular setting. These are places to embrace winter, minus the crowds of summer or fall, or usher in early spring, with sight lines unobstructed by leaves on the trees.

A select group of Indiana’s State Parks and Forestry properties offer these homes away from home yearround. Within that group are two categories. One, the group managed by the property itself, and reserved at camp.IN.gov, are a much warmer and more private step above camping. The other, reserved through IndianaInns.com, is managed by State Park Inns. They generally offer more creature comforts. All boast a private entrance into the Hoosier state’s great outdoors. Properties in the first grouping that offer cabins year-round include Harmonie, McCormick’s Creek, Potato Creek, Shakamak and Whitewater Memorial state parks, and MorganMonroe State Forest’s Cherry Lake Lodge. The cabins are cleaned and disinfected in between stays. Groups can cook and clean to their own comfort level, without interruption, while they are there, and before they leave. The Pease family of Shelbyville, after years of tent camping, rented a cabin for the first time late last fall at Whitewater Memorial. Bill Pease was so impressed he wrote a poem about the experience. It’s posted on the State Parks Facebook page. “If you enjoy being close to nature but you don’t necessarily want everything that goes with that, this is the way to go,” says Pease, who was joined by his wife, their niece and her friend, and his sister. “It was fun to be able to cook over the fire and sit around outside and talk—but it was also nice to be able to walk in and hit that queen size bed. “Staying in a cabin is a luxury, and it’s not that much more expensive than camping.” Their cabin came with two bedrooms and a pullout couch, a living room area, a full kitchen and a small dining area off

the kitchen, one bathroom, a screened-in porch with a picnic table, and a fire ring outside. Amenities vary by cabin and property. Staying at one of the inns-operated cabins offers a similar experience to the Pease family’s, but with housekeeping service and linens included. These cabins are at Brown County, Pokagon and Turkey Run state parks. The experience leans more toward staying in a hotel room, but with more space and privacy, as well as handier access to one the main reasons you’re probably visiting in the first place. “A big difference between staying in

an inn versus staying in a cabin is that, in a cabin, you are in the woods,” says James Teel, regional manager for State Park Inns. And no state park has more forest than 16,000-acre Brown County State Park, which offers three styles of cabins. With the family cabins, which are the largest option, your nearest neighbor would be about 40 feet away. “It’s just like being at home with a house next to you,” Teel said, except for all the trees. “There’s a full kitchen, wood burning stove, and plenty of isolation if that’s what you are looking for. traveliN Staycation 2021

outdoor

“Guests can bring an entire feast for the weekend and stay in the cabin and cook and just enjoy the outdoors without having to worry about doing anything else.” If you prefer, any or all meals can be purchased at the on-site inn.

Brown County’s family cabins are two-story, with the bedrooms upstairs, one with a king and one with a queen, plus two sleeper sofas in the living room. Its modern cabin suites, which are five years old, are like duplexes, with a separation in the middle. They

come with a wet bar, mini fridge, microwave, and coffee pot. The historic cabins, built in 1932, offer a more rustic experience. All options come with access to the park’s indoor aquatic center in Abe Martin Lodge, which oversees them. Turkey Run’s sleeping cabins just came back on the market in August of last year after undergoing total renovations. Each is divided into four private rooms with private entrances. Each has two full beds with bathroom, a 42-inch TV, and mini fridge, and microwave. Add all the trails and scenery that Turkey Run and Turkey Run Inn are famous for, and you can’t miss. For a place where winter is likely to linger longer, try the cabins at Pokagon State Park near Angola, managed by Potawatomi Inn. The main attraction for many is the toboggan run,

Winter’s Best

“Restaurants are getting innovative and creative in order to provide service and follow the safety guidelines.”

– L indsey Skeen Marketing and Media Director Indiana Foodways Alliance

Lindsey Skeen is marketing and media director for the Indiana Foodways Alliance (IFA), a nonprofit that promotes member restaurants statewide. She says restaurants have created new ways to keep outdoor dining going year-round. “Restaurants are getting innovative and creative in order to provide service and follow the safety guidelines,” Skeen said. “In Jeffersonville, you will enjoy the heated patios of Portage House and also Parlour. In New Albany, you can count on The Exchange and Floyd County Brewing Company to provide a heated patio and sidewalk seating. And there are even more options throughout Indiana.” More than 30 Fort Wayne restaurants invite foodies to enjoy heated dining. Outdoor igloos are available at Three Rivers Distilling Company and Club Room, and Crescendo Coffee and More offers fire pits and heaters. Alison Million, retail coordinator at Three Rivers Distilling Company,

Clark and Floyd counties in southern Indiana have several outdoor options including TOP: Parlour, MIDDLE: Portage House, and BOTTOM: Floyd County Brewing. PHOTOS: Clark-Floyd Counties Convention & Tourism Bureau, Parlour, Portage House

said reservations are required for the igloo enclosures that are covered in plastic, heated, and let you choose your own music piped in on BlueTooth. “Many of the most popular times, like around six o’clock on Friday or Saturday, are booked through March,” Million said. “We have other times open. It’s been very, very popular.”

Three Rivers requires a minimum food purchase for an igloo, which holds eight people maximum. But the mac and cheese, cheesecake, and traditional ramen and all the menu choices will be worth it. (https:// www.3rdistilling.com/igloos) Visit Hamilton County Indiana lists more than twenty heated outdoor restaurant options. One of those is traveliN Staycation 2021

Our most popular flavor is Gwendolyn’s Famous Earls Court Chocolate Cake.” The Firehouse BBQ Blues in Richmond offers outdoor dining in igloos, according to Nancy Sartain, Leisure Marketing Director for the Richmond~Wayne County Convention & Tourism Bureau. You can make it a night on the town, too. “It’s in a former firehouse and sometimes there’s music. The

Morgan Snyder, public relations director for Visit Indy, said the city has upped its game recently. “Many of Indy’s restaurants have worked hard to extend their outdoor patio space and to purchase heaters,” Snyder said. “In fact, the city provided an up to $2,500 reimbursement per restaurant for restaurant owners to prepare for winter. We’re delighted that six people or more can experience one of their four igloo outdoor dining huts for two hours. Reservations are required.” The “South Shore” region in Northwest Indiana has several outdoor dining options. The Station at Embers has what they call “Emberdomes” for 2-6 guests. You can enjoy lunch or dinner in igloos at Fair Oaks Farms (reservations are made in two-hour increments and walk-ins are allowed if available). Byways Brewing has

extended their outdoor patio season by installing clear vinyl panels on their pergolas and outdoor heaters for those who want to dine outdoors. If you aren’t feeling very hungry, but want to get out of the house to enjoy a handcrafted beer, pop over to Ironwood Brewing Company to sip on a festive holiday brew in an outdoor igloo. Or if you prefer wine, Shady Creek Winery has one too. The new trend is a win-win. “Heated outdoor dining allows the customer to have the unique experience while the restaurant is continuing their service,” said IFA’s Lindsey Skeen. To get in on the adventure, do your research because the possibilities for Indiana’s food experiences continue to evolve.

Revisited

Over the years, Travel Indiana has recognized some of Indiana’s Top Chefs. In this issue, we’re reflecting on some of our favorites from past issues and hoping to reignite the excitement to support local businesses and restaurants. These chefs are still doing what they love— creating dishes and memories that can only be made by family and friends sharing a meal together. Below are excerpts from three of our best Top Chefs features…

story by Elizabeth Granger

Patrick Rice: The Tin Plate in Elwood The table is set 24/7. The candle is lit at 6 o’clock every evening. But the guest never comes. He’s still missing, or he’s already gone. And the owners of The Tin Plate restaurant know that. That’s their point. The table honors military personnel who have sacrificed the ultimate: A few are still MIA (missing in action) or POWs (Prisoners of War), and many have died. It’s a way for restaurant owners Pat Rice and his son Patrick Rice to honor them and to encourage their diners to do so also. The Missing Man table has been set for almost five years – the restaurant opened in 2015 – but the Rices’ commitment to honoring the military goes back much further. Pat’s Father is a US Army veteran. Pat was an Elwood police officer for 28 years. And Patrick’s service began when he was a youngster. Trumpet lessons in grade school led to his membership in the world champion Star of Indiana Drum & Bugle Corps during high school. He hasn’t stopped playing; he’s a member of Bugles Across America and still plays “Taps” at military funerals throughout Madison County. Patrick said, “I voluntarily play for as many military funerals as are called 84

traveliN Staycation 2021

for so the family does not have to endure the military honors ceremony with a recording. It’s done live.” As for the restaurant, it’s something the father/ son duo had thought about for a long time. Both had already been in the food industry for years, and they were looking for a location in early 2015 when the building in Elwood’s American Tin Plate neighborhood came up for sale. There’s been a lot of remodeling – the new kitchen is much bigger than the original, for example. The Tin Plate’s breaded tenderloin rapidly became their signature dish. Also popular are fried and battered cheese curds; ribbon fries loaded with pulled pork BBQ, shredded cheese, sour cream and jalapeños; and a roast beef Manhattan with red gravy. But always, in the forefront, is that homage to the military. “You’ll see a lot of restaurants set up a (Missing Man) table on Memorial Day or Veterans Day, then take it down,” Pat

said. “Ours is there 24/7. It’s there 365 days a year.” “Because those guys are there 365 days a year,” added Patrick. “They’re not there just two days a year. MIAs, POWs, those buried in the jungle, unknown – they’re there all the time.” “And they’re missed everyday of the year,” Pat said.

story by Elizabeth Granger

Jake Burgess: FoxGardin in Fortville In Fortville, this is the restaurant that Jane built. Or, at least, influenced. Meet Jake Burgess, Jane’s son. He’s owner and chef at FoxGardin Kitchen & Ale in Fortville. And is quick to talk about how influential his mother has been in his choice of careers. So influential that Jane Teagardin Burgess is honored as the “Gardin” in FoxGardin. A seemingly ordinary guy with strong ties to his family and to old-fashioned values, but with a modern, upscale twist. Burgess grew up in Fortville, then a small rural community in Hancock County where he’d play outside with his buddies. “My friends called me ‘Little House on the Prairie’ when I was growing up because I’d have to be home every day at 5 p.m., no matter where I was, because Mom had supper on the table,” he says. “We’d be in the middle of a ballgame and I knew ‘I gotta’ go.’ I’d get home, eat supper, run back and say, ‘Where were we?’ And we’d continue the game.” Burgess started working at 15, in the food business – at Mozzi’s Pizza in Fortville. His first day of work was 9/11. He went off to Ball State to study hospitality. But after three years, he knew it wasn’t for him. He had continued to work in the food industry, graduating to fine dining. On his 21st birthday, he moved to Valdosta, Georgia, “to spread my wings.” “I think Southern-style cooking is homey and family-oriented,” Burgess says. “I worked for some talented Southern-style-cooking chefs, in scratch kitchens, in really nice restaurants – and expanded my cooking.” And then he returned to Indiana, to an upscale Indianapolis restaurant

“I think Southern-style cooking is homey and family-oriented. I worked for some talented Southernstyle-cooking chefs, in scratch kitchens, in really nice restaurants – and expanded my cooking.” where he honed his skills in fine dining. One day, when visiting his parents in Fortville, Burgess saw that a downtown building was available, and he jumped at the chance to open his own restaurant. “I’d worked for somebody long enough,” he says. “I figured I could sleep in the restaurant and eat the food there if I had to.” It’s for adults only because of the building’s layout, which makes it impossible to create separate bar and family dining areas. So now there’s also FoxGardin Family Kitchen, for the entire family, at 104th and Olio Road. Much of the original FoxGardin décor pays tribute to not only the building’s history but also to local history. “Everything in the restaurant

has a story,” Burgess says. Table tops from local barn wood, the original tin ceiling, 48-star American flags – a rustic Americana feel in a building from about 1890. Even trains that rumble through town, whistles blowing, several times a day. The menu still has that Southern touch – fried chicken is accompanied by hot honey – but choices are expanded with perfect hand-cut filet mignon, the Fortville tenderloin, walleye, lobster, pork, duck. Comfort food, elevated.

flavors memorably. Dan is the club’s executive chef, and Amber is the pastry chef. Additionally, she makes the salad dressings from scratch. They live on a one-acre plot of land about ten minutes away that they call Veritas Homestead. It’s a fully functioning farm, on which a multitude of chickens, three milking goats, and two breeding pigs (as well as several dogs and cats) roam, and from which the Grundens harvest, year-round. Dan, a Columbus native, earned a BFA in computer animation at the Illinois Institute of Art. He returned to Columbus to be near family and because it has, as he puts it, “little big city” appeal. “I thought I might work at a local graphics company, but I got hired as a busser at Bistro 310, an establishment that was a downtown Columbus fixture for many years.

“I moved up to being a server and became really interested in what we were trying to do. The chef would explain each night’s special, going into the history of it, and I liked passing that along to my tables. He was also willing to answer my questions about technique. I remember wondering how he got his salmon crispy. I practiced at home until I had it down.” He eventually rose to being assistant manager. Then the country club needed a food and beverage director, and he was hired, a move he calls “a big jump.” Amber, a native of Clayton, Indiana, studied photojournalism at Indiana University and worked at a portrait studio. She met Dan on match.com and, along with marrying him, formed the team that makes Veritas Homestead and the country club kitchen such magical places. “I spent a significant

amount of money on art school, and as I think about it, I do use what I learned in my current life,” says Dan. “You have to think about color theory and filling space, and it really applies to plating.” There is a connection between serving regulars and maximizing the freshness of the dishes’ ingredients, according to Dan: “Since it’s a private club, I’m basically cooking for the same people every week, so we’ve gone to weekly menus. That allows me to use what we have available from the farm.”

We appreciate your support of our local business since 1965 Arni Cohen opened the doors to the flagship restaurant in 1965 at Market Square Shopping Center in Lafayette. Originally seating a little over 100 people, within 10 years Arni’s at Market Square was one of the largest restaurants in Indiana. The company is now owned by Arni’s two sons, Brad and Kurt Cohen. Brad describes his father as a “living legend” – “he was so great with people,” Brad says, explaining that growing up at Arni’s meant never meeting a stranger. Arni had a philosophy: Serve good food at a reasonable price, by employees that treat customers with respect, in return, your business will succeed. Even more important was his approach to the community. He believed that if Arni’s took care of the community,

the community will in turn take care of you. This philosophy has been a pretty successful one that has helped Arni’s become one of Indiana’s community restaurants and grow to 18 locations. “I learned so much about human nature, being kind and caring,” Kurt adds, “We are very proud to be associated with a restaurant that has such a positive image in our communities.” Now, for over a decade, Arni’s has been serving fresh and delicious food with a friendly smile. When you come to Arni’s you’re getting more than just a good meal, you’re experiencing one of Indiana’s finest restaurant traditions. Family and friends all gather here to experience the feel-good environment, great service and the one of kind thin crust pizza.
