The University of Notre Dame is a Catholic University, founded in 1842 by Reverend Edward F. Sorin and located near South Bend, Indiana about 90 miles east of Chicago. Notre Dame currently has approximately 8,350 undergraduate students in attendanceand has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report at 19. The university is best known for its chemistry and biochemistry programs and has the longest-running astrophysics lab. The University of Notre Dame's football team has won 11 national championships and can boast seven Heisman Trophy winners.

Purdue University is located in West Lafayette, Indiana, which is 65 miles north of Indianapolis and 126 miles to the southeast of Chicago. Purdue, founded in 1869, was named after the school's benefactor, John Purdue and has approximately 32,660 undergraduate students. The university is best known for the studies it offers in aerospace, such as aeronautics and astronautics. Ball State University is located in Muncie, Indiana, which is about one hour northeast of Indianapolis. Ball State was founded as a private teacher training school in 1899. The August exhibit includes work from photographer Ernie Clark and watercolorist Sara McQueen. The Arts Alliance of Brown County presents a wide range of artisanal crafts, fine furniture, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, and other traditional media. In September, the Lotus World Music and Arts Festival puts on an exhibit of international textiles in conjunction with its world-famous celebration of international music. Photographer Massimo Ossi reasserts the power of black and white imagery. The Down’s Syndrome Family Connection explores the beauty of family and friends. Also coming in September will be a dynamic exhibit across Ivy Tech Bloomington. Quixotic installation artist Dylan DeWitt tweaks the public in this Visual Treasure Hunt, a self-guided tour. The Indianapolis 500’s 100-year anniversary race has been run, but the racing capitol of the world is just getting started with world-class events.

NASCAR NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series brings the world’s greatest stock car drivers to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the 18th Brickyard 400 from July 29-31. Jeff Gordon has four victories in the Brickyard, including the inaugural in 1994. Gordon, who moved from his native California to nearby Pittsboro, Indiana, at age 13 to pursue his racing career, also has won four Sprint Cup championships. Native Hoosier Tony Stewart has two victories in the Brickyard 400, in 2005 and 2007, and Jimmie Johnson has taken three of the five, in 2006, ’08 and ’09. Dale Earnhardt was the Brickyard winner in 1995, Dale Jarrett in 1996 and ’99, Bobby Labonte in 2000 and Bill Elliott in 2002. Like Gordon, they’ve all won Sprint Cup championships. Johnson, driving the Lowe’s Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports became the first in Sprint Cup to win five straight titles in 2010. Johnson, Gordon, Stewart, Elliott and Labonte will be back at the Brickyard this year along with other notable drivers like Richard Childress Racing’s Kevin Harvick [the 2003 Brickyard winner] Roush Fenway Racing’s Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin, Red Bull Racing’s Kasey Kahne and Brian Vickers, Penske Racing’s Kurt Busch and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Jamie McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya.

Montoya has been a contender in the past two Brickyards, but mistakes prevented him from becoming the first driver to win it and the Indianapolis 500. He led 116 of 160 laps in 2009

Montoya doesn’t feel like Indy owes him anything. "To tell you the truth, they gave me a big one at the beginning," Montoya said. "I got the '500,' and that means a lot to me. I would love to get the 400 win, but it's been like it was in Formula One, when every time I came here in Formula One, we were always so close to winning and it never happened. It seems like it's easy on the IndyCar side for those guys to bolt it together and pull home those wins, especially here at Indy. So, we're hoping we can do that here in July.”

They’re part of the Kroger Speedfest, which begins July 28 with USAC’s premier Silver Crown Series in the J.D. Byrider 100, USAC’s national Midgets and ARCA stock cars.

NATIONWIDE/CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES The Truck Series takes to the .686-mile oval on Friday, July 29. The field will include Kyle Busch, driving for his own team, Ron Hornaday Jr., a four-time series champion who drives for Kevin Harvick Inc., two-time Truck titlist Geoff Bodine, driving for Germain Racing, and up-and-coming star Austin Dillon, grandson of Sprint Cup team owner Richard Childress. Cup regulars Edwards, Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch are expected to race in the Nationwide race on Saturday, July 30. Nationwide regulars Elliott Sadler, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Reed Sorenson, Justin Allgaier, Aric Almirola and Steven Wallace, son of former Cup champion Rusty Wallace, will also be in the 30th Kroger 200.

IU Art Museum Celebrates 70 Years

open to the public, and will feature a DJ’d dance music and delicious confections from BLU Boy Chocolates as well as other sweets and treats. Following the After-Party is our series of Coffeehouse Nights over three Thursdays in September. Each night offers complimentary coffee from Angles Café and cookies from Bloomingfoods, and will feature a different facet of the IU Art Museum’s permanent collections with live music in each gallery. On September 1, the focus is 20th-century American art, with jazz music by saxophonist Tom Clark. Ancient Asian art is featured on September 8, with Mongolian dobro music by Joshua Strodtman. The series ends on September 15 highlighting Pre-Columbian art, with traditional Chonta music from the Colombian rainforest performed by Juan Sebastián. Coffeehouse Nights are 7pm-9pm each Thursday, and all are free and open to the public.

For those who wonder what it was like to live during the Prohibition era, the Indiana Historical Society provides the answer with its newest addition to the Indiana Experience—You Are There 1920: Busted! Prohibition Enforced. Guests are invited to step through—and into— an IHS collections photograph that depicts Indianapolis police headquarters on December 9, 1920, where officers have just returned to unload the still from Indiana’s largest bust to date. In the patrol barn and booking area, visitors can get the inside scoop about the raid, learn the fate of the bootleggers, meet members of the temperance movement and more—becoming part of the frenzy surrounding the headlinemaking arrest.

Spike it! Minnetrista is setting itself apart from traditional exhibits in creating their own original Dig Set Spike exhibit open now through September 11. This exciting exhibit chronicles the regional history of volleyball. In the nation, there are three cities known to produce world-class female volleyball players and extraordinary volleyball coaches for women’s teams: Los Angeles, Chicago, and Muncie.

Dig Set Spike celebrates the sport, the players, the coaches, and the history of volleyball in East Central Indiana. In this exhibit, visitors can explore volleyball in fresh and interactive ways as they meet young players and find out how volleyball has changed their lives. Visitors will discover the role this region of Indiana has played in the development of the great American sport of volleyball.

Experience seeing some of Indiana's most beautiful locations on horseback or bicycle

The Hoosier National Forest has almost 200 miles of horse trails available. Riders can bring their horse here and enjoy any of twelve different trails of varying lengths. Hickory Ridge Trail is a whopping 46.7 miles in length. Camping overnight is allowed. Riders must acquire a permit, which costs $5 per day.

Indiana boasts a number of horse trails for the equestrian traveller. Visitors can have the experience of seeing some of Indiana’s most beautiful locations completely on horseback. From sandy trails to winding forests, riders can have their pick of horse-friendly destinations. With many of these trails being near or within parks that also offer camping, hiking, and biking, there is something for every member of the family to enjoy. CARDINAL GREENWAYS TRAILS Cardinal Greenways is a private, not-for-profit organization that encompasses the Cardinal Greenway, White River Greenway, Historic Wysor Street Depot and Cardinal Equestrian Trail. The Cardinal Greenway portion is the longest rail-trail in Indiana and spans almost 60 miles from Marion through Muncie to Richmond in East Central Indiana.

These three trails connect and allow for bikers to go for miles in the center of Indianapolis from Carmel all the way to downtown Indy. The Towpath is both a vintage remnant of 19th Century Indiana, and a modern mid-city escape along gentle waters and into quiet woods. The Towpath is more than five miles long, from the Canal's headwater in Broad Ripple to its south terminus at 30th Street. The Monon Trail is perhaps one of the busiest in the nation. A study by the Eppley Institute logged thousands of visitors, enjoying this wonderful Indianapolis trail. The Monon Trail links commercial districts, schools, parks, the state fairgrounds and a dozen residential neighborhoods. White River is the longest "greenway" in Marion County, and it makes a winding path through the city from the northeast corner to the southwest. Wapahani is its native name, and it is home to dozens of species of fish, small mammals, and

invertebrates, as well as some red fox, coyote and deer. Currently, it links with the Central Canal Towpath, the southern segment of the Fall Creek Trail, and the Downtown Canal Walk, Monon Trail and it will eventually link to the Eagle Creek Trail and possibly the Pleasant Run Trail.

EAGLE CREEK TRAIL—INDIANAPOLIS

When complete, Eagle Creek Trail of Indianapolis will be more than 16 miles long, and have major access points at Thatcher Park, Ridenour Park and Ross-Claypool Park. Two miles of trail are on the ground at the south end, laid by the Indianapolis Department of Public Works in 2003. The south section will be connected to the White River Wapahani Trail. Eagle Creek Trail is the lynchpin to a westside network that will link neighborhoods, schools, parks, commercial areas and industrial districts, and make connections that reach beyond county borders. Its path stretches from the rolling hills of Eagle Park Park and reservoir to the wide floodway of White River.

B-LINE TRAIL—IBLOOMINGTON The B-line trail is a unique, urban multi-use trail managed by the City of Bloomington. This trial currently runs .6 miles from Rogers Street to

Second Street in Downtown Bloomington. When it is complete, the 3 mile trail will travel from Adams Street to Country Club Drive and meet the Bloomington Rail-Trail, it will also connect to the Clear Creek Trail in the future. It is open for walking, biking and rollerblading.

The town of Fishers is also planning a park and greenway network that will connect all the way to 96th Street on the east side of White River.

WAPEHANI MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK— BLOOMINGTON

45.98 acres off Weimer Road in southwestern Bloomington, this park is the first park in Indiana to be designated solely as a mountain bike park. The property, formerly a Boy Scout camp, harbors many challenging twisting trails.

TOWN RUN TRAIL PARK— BRYANT LANE, INDIANAPOLIS One of the best venues in the Indianapolis area for off-road riding is preserved and protected as Town Run Trail Park. Located on the far north side of Marion County, Town Run is on the west side of White River immediately south of 96th Street. There is trailhead parking at 96th Street for cyclists arriving at Town Run by car, and Carmel's excellent Hazel Dell Parkway / Greenway terminates only a couple hundred yards from the park entrance.

The Indiana men's golf team heads into this season with a mix of lofty aspirations and high confidence after a fall campaign that included a pair of top-five finishes and ended with two straight tournament titles. Head Coach Mike Mayer and the Hoosiers [No. 25 GolfweekSagarin/No. 33 Golfstat] hope their progress and effort in the fall will translate into big things during the coming months. "It's a special group of kids in a lot of ways," said Mayer. "I think we have a lot of talent, but we have people who work hard and people who really deserve to win. Every good thing that happens to this team is based on the work that they've done and these kids have worked really, really hard in the fall." The Cream and Crimson will look for leadership from juniors David Erdy and Chase Wright, a tandem that have been mainstays in the Hoosier lineup during their careers. Erdy, a Boonville, Indiana native, is currently third on the Indiana career stroke average list with a 73.40. Wright is fifth on that list with a 73.54 career average. "I've never had two better leaders on this team and I've had some pretty good leaders," said

Mayer. "Ability-wise they're pretty special as well. I'm looking for one of these two guys to really breakout this spring. That would really change the dynamics of this team." Sophomore Brant Peaper and freshman David Mills had impressive fall campaigns, competing in all five events for the Hoosiers, including top-five finishes for both at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate. Including Kiawah, Peaper had a trio of top-10 finishes during the fall and looks to be a consistent threat in the Hoosier lineup.

Overton, a PGA Tour member since 2006, is coming off a stellar 2010 season which included six top-10 finishes and a spot on the United States Ryder Cup team.

"He's a true freshman that is simply a tough, young son-of-a-gun," said Mayer. "This kid is not afraid to get the golf ball in the hole. He's not afraid to score and as we change him a little bit fundamentally and change his swing a little bit, he could be really special."

Nestled among 108 acres of scenic wooded land in Monroe County, rests a place that is unique to the Unites States. Some call the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center a “jewel”. During the 2007 visit from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, he proclaimed that this Indiana property now be called “KUMBUM WEST”. It was during this private luncheon hosted by Elaine and John Mellencamp, that our small group first learned of the long term vision for the center which included educational and cultural outreach, community activities, and a myriad of offerings for the general public. Founded in the late 1970’s by the eldest brother of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the TMBCC features a cultural building that is now being used for more than traditional cultural events. The National Association for Print Journalists held their annual meeting here last summer. The building is fully functional for meetings, special

events and even weddings. The space hosts up to 150 guests [seated] and arrangements may be made to have your event or gathering catered with traditional Tibetan and Mongolian food. The HAPPY YAK gift shop also operates from the cultural building and is a popular stop for visitors looking for unique gifts and wares. The YAK sells handmade Tibetan and Mongolian crafts, clothing, jewelry, books, teas and more. Visitors may reserve a private retreat room located above the cultural building. The tradition of Indiana's men's golf program has been well-documented and the university's commitment to excellence in the sport is evident by the golf facilities that reside in Bloomington close to the IU campus. Located just a few minutes from campus, the Indiana University Golf Course offers many amenities for golfers of all kinds. The facility includes an 18-hole championship course, a ninehole executive course, a large, lighted, driving range and in 2003, a state-of-the-art practice facility was added. Construction began in 1954 on IU's championship layout and three years later the 6,900 yard, par71 facility was finished. Dense forest occupies the property, resulting in an 18 hole, tree-lined layout that demands accuracy off the tee. When golfers reach the greens at the championship course they are often faced with difficult putts on the large, severely sloped putting surfaces. The combination of slopes and size gives players plenty of room to work on their short games. Former Indiana men's golf coach Jim Soutar designed the championship course with help from former coordinator of Indiana University's athletic facilities, Paul "Pooch" Harrell.

As if the tight fairways wouldn't make the course tough enough, the IU layout is made even more difficult by the abundance of doglegs over the rolling Monroe County terrain. Coach The IU championship course plays host to Indiana Section PGA events as well as numerous collegiate tournaments. "We have a very good golf course

that demands a lot off the tee and course management. The greens are very sloped, usually back-to-front, and you have to make sure the ball is on the correct side of the hole. The trees make the fairways pretty tight, but certainly reward the good shots." –Mike Mayer, Head Coach

The Hoosiers hosted their first Big Ten Championships in 1961, which was won by the Ohio State men's team. Medalist honors went to the Buckeyes' leader, famed golf legend Jack Nicklaus.

Bloomington in the summer means less traffic, more parking—and lots of live music, theater and dance, conferences and lectures, art openings and films. This summer, Indiana University Bloomington brings all of those elements together in the Summer Festival of the Arts, which began this week and will continue through August 28. The inaugural festival offers 113 days of arts programming, much of it free and family-friendly, at venues across campus including IU Auditorium, IU Cinema, the Jacobs School of Music, the Lilly Library, the Mathers Museum of World Cultures, the Grunwald Gallery of Art [formerly School of Fine Arts Gallery] and the Lee Norvelle Theatre & Drama Center. "Indiana University has had a long-standing commitment to excellence in the arts and humanities," said IU President Michael A. McRobbie. "In initiating this new summer arts festival, we are building upon the university's rich cultural heritage while offering visitors to our Bloomington campus the kinds of high-caliber artistic programs and magnificent cultural facilities that are typically only found in our nation's major metropolises. All of us at IU look forward to showcasing our vibrant arts community this summer and starting what we believe will become

an exciting seasonal tradition." 113 Days of Art IU to host 113 days of artwith inaugural Summer Festival of the Arts its summer music programming with the Summer Festival of the Arts, while the IU Department of Theatre and Drama will offer its first Indiana Theatre Festival season on campus as part of the festival, with a lineup featuring The Music Man, The Comedy of Errors and Ah, Wilderness. The IU Cinema will show an array of films ranging from documentaries to children's films, many of which are free to the public. Experience a variety of festivals that take place in vibrant and friendly downtown Bloomington Summer and fall are festival season in Bloomington! One of those is the Fourth Street Festival, which takes place each year on Labor Day weekend. On September 3-4 you’ll find the tree-lined streets near the 4th and Dunn area packed with regional artisans selling artwork in a number of mediums including stained glass, painting, photography, jewelry and everything in between. Nick’s English Hut is just such a place. Since Nick Hrisomalos first opened the doors in 1927, Nick’s has been a highlight of the Bloomington social scene. At first, Nick’s was only a restaurant. Once prohibition was repealed in 1933 though, Nick’s began serving alcohol and has continued to operate as both a restaurant and bar for the past 78 years. Nick’s prime location on Kirkwood situates the establishment an equal walking distance between Indiana University and the Courthouse Square. The clientele represents both districts. It’s one of those rare college town joints that attracts both locals and students, who saddle up on bar stools next to one another as if their worlds were one and the same. “Nick’s is a real throwback sort of place,” said owner, Gregg “Rags” Rago. “It’s comfortable because it’s so authentic. What you see is what get.” And what you get is a nostalgic, relaxing environment in which to enjoy food and drink at a fair price, where anyone can come in and feel at home.

“We’re certainly not a fine dining establishment, but we take pride in offering quality meals at reasonable prices. We use as many local farmers as possible. All of our beef and pork are raised local, and when they’re in season, our vegetables come from local farms, too,” Rags said. The menu at Nick’s is on par with what you’d expect to find in a tavern; cheeseburgers, pizza, sandwiches, salads and more. The quality, though, is anything but typical. The Nick’s Burgers are thick and juicy, while the pizza is thin and crisp. Both are excellent choices, but the star of Nick’s menu is the stromboli. “Dick Barnes, the second owner of Nick’s, introduced strombolis to the menu back in the 1950’s. They’ve remained a favorite for over half a century,” Rags said. Whether you’re looking for a place to watch the game with friends, are interested in just grabbing a pizza and pitcher for dinner, or are looking for the perfect place to reconnect with your college years, Nick’s is the place.

Brown County Art Gallery Celebrates 85 Years LYN LETSINGER-MILLER

Established in 1926, the Brown County Art Gallery Association was organized by early Indiana artists There are many attractions in Brown County, but did you know that one of the oldest art galleries in the United States is located in Nashville? The Brown County Art Gallery was established in 1926 by early Indiana artists making Nashville and Brown County, one of the most important regional art colonies in America. This year, both the Gallery and the Artists Association that founded it, celebrate their 85th anniversary.

The early artists were trained at the best art schools in Europe and the United States. They were inspired by the French Impressionists who painted out in the countryside. They chose this remote southern Indiana County as a painting ground because it offered beautiful vistas and interesting characters still living in log cabins for subjects. And just as important, Brown County was close to large markets like Indianapolis, Chicago, Louisville and Cincinnati.

The first major artist to make his home in Brown County was T.C. Steele. In 1907, he bought property between Nashville and Bloomington. Steele attracted other artists to visit, including Adolph Shulz and his wife Ada. Adolph and Ada were trained in Paris and Chicago and were living in Wisconsin when they read about Brown County in a Chicago Newspaper. They relocated to Brown County in 1917 establishing an art colony in Nashville.

In the 1950’s, a fire forced the Gallery to move to its present location just east of the Courthouse at the corner of Main Street and Artist Drive. Present day visitors can learn more about Brown County’s important art history by visiting The Brown County Art Gallery, where paintings by the original artist members are on display, along with other historic exhibits. In addition, paintings by current Brown County Art Association members fill the Main Hall, just as they have for the past 85 years.

NICKEL PLATE ARTS TRAIL Another Indiana Artisan sponsored program, the Nickel Plates Arts Trail begins in Fishers and travels north through Hamilton County to Tipton, Ind. It showcases art, food and history along the historic Nickel Plate rail line, a line still in use for Indiana Transportation Museum excursions. Tour stops would include a ride on an ITM excursion, a heritage adventure trip along the White River with a local historian, and visits to galleries and restaurants in Noblesville’s downtown historic district.

Through the end of July, Wednesday nights are filled with music at the LINCOLN PARK CONCERT SERIES, in the pocket park Abraham Lincoln stopped in on his way to his Presidential Inauguration. The music ends July 27th, but continues Sunday nights LIONS PARK through the 31st.

Add dancing and you’ve got the annual STREET DANCE & TASTE OF ZIONSVILLE on Saturday, August 6th; a dozen restaurants serve their delicious cuisine on MAIN STREET from 6-11pm. Horse lovers and serious equestrians from around the world come to Zionsville for the 34TH ANNUAL TRADERS POINT HUNT CHARITY HORSE SHOW & COUNTRY FAIR at WILD AIR FARMS August 9-14.
