Honoring Will Koch On June 14th, 2010, Southern Indiana said a sad goodbye to a great entrepreneur and leader, Will Koch, Chief Executive Officer of Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari Theme Parks in Santa Claus, Indiana As the third generation to operate Holiday World, Will added the award-winning Splashin’ Safari water park to the relatively modest park in 1993, a move that was instrumental in catapulting the park’s seasonal attendance past the one-million mark for the first time ever in 2006. Will also helped take Holiday World to its award winning status by designing and adding some of the world’s best rides including the Pilgrims Plunge, the World’s tallest water ride, and the Voyage roller coaster that has been named “#1 Wooden Coaster on the Planet” by Amusement Today magazine. In addition, Holiday World has consistently been ranked as the #1 Friendliest Park and the #1 Cleanest Park, outranking such parks as Disney World, Kings Island, Dollywood and Cedar Point. This year, the park premiered Wildebeest, the world’s longest water coaster.
“The Koch family is deeply touched and comforted by the outpouring of love
Born and raised in the tiny town of Santa Claus, Indiana, Koch attended Heritage Hills High School in Lincoln City, and was Valedictorian of his graduating class in 1979. He graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame in 1984 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. In 1986, he received a Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern California. Koch served as president of the Lincoln Boyhood Drama Association, which worked with the State of Indiana to reopen the Lincoln Amphitheatre in 2009 with a new drama honoring the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. He was also a past member of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Amusement Parks & Attractions and he served on the Administrative Council of the Santa Claus United Methodist Church. Koch is survived by his wife, Lori, and three children: Lauren, Leah, and William. He is also survived by his mother, Pat, and siblings Dan, Kristi, Philip and Natalie. He was 48 years old.

Indiana University Indiana University is among the top 100 universities in the world In 2009, the Academic Ranking of World Universities gave IU a world rank of 93 and a national rank of 52. Time magazine named Indiana University its “2001 College of the Year” among major research universities; Indiana is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities, the leading American research universities. Additionally, IU has over 110 academic programs ranked in the top twenty nationwide. The tenth annual Newsweek-Kaplan College Guide, which appeared in the August 22, 2005 issue of Newsweek magazine, chose IU as its “Hottest Big State School” and extolled the campus’s blend of tradition with emerging technologies. In January 2010 Kiplinger's Personal Finance ranked Bloomington the 28th out of the “100 Best Values in Public Colleges 2009-10.”

USA Today called Bloomington one of the top 10 student-friendly college towns with a population of less than 1 million. The university offers the latest in technology: IU was ranked as one of the top five wired universities in America according to Princeton Review and PC Magazine. On the 2010 Green Report Card, issued by the Sustainable Endowments Institute, the university received a B-.

The campus of Indiana University Bloomington sits on 1,933 acres and includes abundant green space and historic buildings dating to the university’s reconstruction in the late nineteenth century. stone quarried locally. The Works Progress Administration built much of the campus’s core during the Great Depression. The 500,000-square-foot Indiana Memorial Union [IMU], the second largest student union in the United States, is the campus centerpiece — a place where students go to study, relax, eat, sleep, bowl, play pool, watch movies, play games in the arcade, and even shop. In addition to numerous stores and restaurants, it features an eight-story student activities tower [home to the Indiana University Student Association, Indiana Memorial Union Board, and a variety of other student organizations], a 186-room hotel, a 400-seat theatre, a 5,000-square-foot Alumni Hall, 50,000 square feet of meeting space, and a Starbucks. Nearly 20,000 people go through the Union on a typical school day. The IMU houses an outstanding collection of Indiana art including artists from Brown County, the Hoosier Group, Richmond Group and others. The Indiana University Bloomington Library System supports nineteen library facilities and three special research collections. On January 26, 2010, the Indiana University Bloomington Libraries were recognized as the top American research library system in 2009 by the Association of College and Research Libraries. IU’s Herman B Wells Library is the 13th largest university library in North America. Prior to a ceremony in June 2005 when it was
renamed for IU’s former president and chancellor, this building was simply called the Main Library. Built in 1969, the building contains eleven floors in the graduate tower and five floors in the undergraduate tower. The building also contains the Information Commons, a fully-integrated technology center for learning and collaboration which attracts 82 percent of all undergraduate students. With over 1,823 full-time faculty members, Indiana University leads the Big Ten public universities in the number of endowed faculty positions, with 333 chairs, professorships, and curators. In the 17,000-seat Assembly Hall [home to the IU NCAA basketball team], there are five NCAA Men's Division I Baskeball Championships banners on display. The IU campus also has trails that many use for biking and running. The trails in Bloomington and nearby areas total nearly 1,200 miles. The school’s national affiliation is with the National Collegiate Athletic Association [NCAA]. National team titles [now totaling 25; 24 NCAA, 1 AIAW] have been won in nine men’s sports and one women’s sport [tennis], topped by a record-setting six straight men’s swimming & diving titles, seven men’s soccer crowns and five titles in men’s basketball. Indiana studentathletes have won 133 NCAA individual titles, including 79 in men’s swimming and diving and 31 in men’s track and field. In addition, IU teams have won or shared 157 Big Ten Conference championships.

West Baden Springs Hotel, a National Historic Landmark, built in 1902 has been called “One of the 8th Wonders of the World.”
Brown County, known as the “Artist Colony of the Midwest”, Brown County’s picturesque landscape, drew many artists to the area. Will Vawter, Adolph Shulz, Marie Goth, Carl Graf and T.C. Steele all established studios or residences throughout the county in the early 1900s. Today over

Agritourism The tourism and agriculture industries play a vital role in Indiana’s economy, providing meaningful work to more than 169,000 Hoosiers Home to more than 59,500 farms, Indiana ranks in the top ten nationally in the production of ducks, eggs, popcorn and soybeans, and exports approximately $44 million in agricultural goods to international markets each year. Tourism is Indiana’s third largest industry, attracting more than 49 million people and $6.7 billion in visitor spending to our state each year. In Indiana, more than 11,000 businesses and organizations depend, at least in part, on visitor spending.
Farmers throughout the state continue to look for ways to add value to their products. Museum of Modern Architecture Columbus, Indiana is a one-of-a-kind community that embraced the future and chose architecture as the way to express its optimism—it’s a place where every brick tells a story

of modern architecture with works by some of the most enduring names in architecture, like I.M. Pei, Richard Meier, Robert Venturi, as well as Eliel and Eero Saarinen, just to name a few. Great design is everywhere—in 70 modern buildings, award-winning parks and landscapes, dozens of large-scale public art installations, and even in the bridges, This is why the American Institute of Architects ranked the city sixth in the U.S. for architectural innovation and design.
National Geographic Traveler recently ranked the city of 40,000 residents 11th out of 109 historic destinations worldwide by National Geographic Society’s Center for Sustainable Destinations. Columbus scored 78 points in the annual survey, placing it 11th on the list, higher than any other U.S destination.

Renowned soprano Angela Brown, a Jacobs School of Music alumna, and the acoustic-jamfolk band Time for Three are just two of the acts that can't be easily categorized, said festival coordinator Thomas Wieligman. "It doesn't fit a label, but all I know is that the audience is going to leave [Time for Three] humming and snapping their fingers," he said, adding that with all of the music series available this summer, audiences will be able to expand their musical tastes.

Artists from across the globe are making their way to Bloomington for the Jacobs School of Music's annual Summer Music Festival at Indiana University
Part Of The Festival Family
The festival opens June 19 and ends August 10. This year's event honors the 200th anniversary of the births of Robert Schumann and Frederic Chopin with a chamber music series, a symphonic series, piano recitals, summer band performances, organ recitals, percussion performances and the eighth U.S. International Harp Competition.
With the Jacobs School of Music's world-class faculty members, Bloomington has become an unlikely music capital. Wieligman said that the faculty members chose most of the artists playing at the festival. "We don't simply invite people," he said. "We invite people we want to be a part of the family." The strong relationships that have been formed between faculty members and other musicians are behind the music festival's success. The music school faculty members are IU's gateway to the arts world. "They come here in the middle of the cornfields
Summer Music Festival By Alyssa Goldman because of friendships," Wieligman said. "When we have someone on our faculty like Mr. [Menahem] Pressler -- who for 65-plus years has been giving concerts of the highest level all around the world -- he has made a gob of friendships. And when he calls you and says, 'I want you to come to Bloomington and play with me,' people can't turn him down." But the elite performers aren't just the ones coming from overseas -- some of the finest artists can be found in the hallways and classrooms of the Jacobs School. IU music professors Mark Kaplan and Yael Weiss will play in the WeissKaplan-Newman Trio on 8pm, Thursday, June 24, in Auer Hall. His Holiness The Dalai Lama Dedicates Sacred Creations Contributed by Lisa Morrison
Anticipation fills the air as a small group of private guests await the arrival of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center [TMBCC] on Snoddy Road in Bloomington Indiana
Photo I TMBCC Archive, Tamara Fitzpatrick
Young Tibetan dancers, monks and lay people gather around the sacred Sand Mandala that has been prepared for His Holiness. Others wait near the new Mani Korlo prayer wheel structure which was completed only days before in preparation for the sixth visit of the Dalai Lama to Bloomington. His Holiness will dedicate and bless each new creation at the center as he makes his arrival at this very special place was founded by his eldest brother, Thubten Jigme Norbu, in the 1970’s.
The first stop His Holiness will make with the entourage will be at the Sand Mandala was created by the Drepung Loseling Monks. The Venerable Arjia Rinpoche, Director of the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center commissioned the monks to build this creation. A Sand Mandala is one of the most sacred traditional Tibetan art forms and is constructed entirely of brightly colored sand. The sand is manipulated by straws through which the monks blow to form the designs. Hands are not used to create the

Mandala which requires days to prepare. This particular Mandala is created inside a pagoda near the entry of the TMBCC. The pagoda features a solar powered prayer wheel that hovers above the Sand Mandala, which is now encased in glass and is a permanent addition to the structure. Special guests and young Tibetan performers have waited since the morning to greet His Holiness and capture a glimpse of the blessing of the Sand Mandala. At two o’clock, the assembled crowd hears the motorcade rolling up to the entry of the center. Guests wait at the gate holding their prayer scarves dressed in traditional Tibetan and Mongolian clothing reserved for only the most special occasions. The Tibetan horns sound from the roof of the temple to announce the arrival of the Tibetan spiritual leader as he enters the gateway of Kumbum West. Following the Sand Mandala dedication, His Holiness rounds the corner to see the new prayer wheel structure for the first time. Guests and media scurry behind to follow the entourage. The Mani Korlo, which rests adjacent to the “World Peace” Stuppa in front of the temple, is unique to the TMBCC. It was constructed from recycled materials. A Mani Korlo contains
prayers written on small strips of paper that are tightly scrolled within a wheel that rotates in a clockwise direction when turned by a Buddhist practitioner. Some Mani wheels, are solar powered and turn with the energy of the sun. The prayers within a Mani wheel vary but usually they are the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum, the prayer of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Avalokiteshvara [tib Chenrezig]. Buddhists believe that when a person with a meditative mind turns a wheel containing this mantra, blessings are bestowed on all suffering beings and the practitioner accumulates great merit. This practice is common in Tibet and Mongolia. The Mani Korlo at the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center was donated by sponsors for the benefit of their family members. The bronze wheels on the ground level of the Mani Korlo come from Kumbum Monastery in Amdo, Tibet. They contain more than 800,000,000 copies of the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra. The wheel on the upper mid-section of the Mani Korlo spins constantly on solar power and contains 670,635,000 mantras invoking the blessings of Avalokiteshvara, Tara, Manjushri, and Vajripani, and the spiritual teacher Lama
Tsong Khapa. A statue of Buddha Shakyamuni is situated below this prayer wheel. The word mani refers to the second syllable of the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum. Korlo is the Tibetan word meaning “wheel.” The Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center in Bloomington is the only center is the United States to feature sacred structures such as these. Having been blessed by the 14th Dalai Lama, these sacred and historical structures now serve as meaningful reminders of the special visit of His Holiness in 2010 to this small Indiana town.

Bring Back the Outdoors By Brandon Butler

Outdoor recreation too often takes a backseat to technology in our cultural modern day

Children, who just a generation ago would have run for the park after school, are now routinely parking themselves in front of a television for another all night videogame marathon. Reuniting our children with nature is the crucial element of ensuring a future for our natural resources.
Few regions of our country offer greater opportunity to educate youth on the majesty of Mother Nature than south central Indiana. From Brown County State Park to Lake Monroe to the Hoosier National Forest, residents and visitors alike have at their fingertips an unending plethora of natural recreation. Activities as simple as strolling along a wooded path watching bluebirds fly or casting a line to eager fish will open a child’s heart to the undeniable draw of spending time out-of-doors. South central Indiana is truly blessed in terms of recreational outdoor opportunity. Hiking trails, campgrounds, parks, lakes, reservoirs, and streams abound; all calling to our children like long lost friends. If we, as mentors of today’s youth, fail to properly educate our children on the importance of natural appreciation, then they as generation may fail to understand the urgency with which we all must work to protect what is left of our natural resources. It is our responsibility to engage the next generation in outdoor reaction, so they will embrace and evolve the rhythm
of natural protection we as Americans have been composing for the last century. For those looking to extend their stay in the natural world of south central Indiana, consider pitching a tent at one of the numerous regional campgrounds, or rent one of the many cabins dotting the wooded landscape of our magnificent Hoosier Hills. A unique opportunity awaits the adventurous souls who embark on a high-sea houseboat adventure; available on both Lake Monroe and Patoka Lake through numerous rental agencies. Whether you choose to spend a couple of hours or a couple of nights surrounded by nature in southern Indiana, you’ll undoubtedly come away refreshed and eager to be outdoors once again, real soon. Take your children into our magical hills and see for yourself the power of nature through the eyes of a child. The future of our trees, our water, and our way of life is dependent upon your participation in creating your child’s love of nature.

to delight all who visit Janko’s. The food isn’t the only reason to visit Janko’s Little Zagreb. Owner, Mark Conlin, takes great pride in the restaurant’s impressive selection of fine wines.
Janko’s Little Zagreb has been a staple of Bloomington dining for over 25 years. This classic hole-in-the-wall is known by patrons across the country for its thick, tender, fresh cut steaks grilled to perfection on a time-seasoned grill. In fact, the steaks are so good, singer Billy Joel reminisced a Janko’s experience during his speech at John Mellencamp’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
Signature steaks include two sizes of fillet, a New York strip, a T-bone, and a 28- ounce porterhouse that just might be the absolute best steak in America. Janko’s menu also boasts a fabulous variety of seafood. Lobster tail, king crab, tuna, and mahi mahi delight those looking for a treat from the sea. Culinary Tourism No lack of good food here. You won’t have to go far to find an array of culinary tastes including everything from casual American and Greek to International Indian and Tibetan. Orbitz Travel research named Bloomington as “the seventh fastest growing destination in the nation for wine and culinary enthusiasts.”

Culinary tourism includes a local pastry shop, an interesting bar on a nameless street that only locals know about, the pretzel vendor on the streets of New York City, or a gelato vendor on a historic street in Italy. Higher-end experiences fall into a subset of culinary tourism called “Gourmet Tourism”. In fact, wine tourism, beer tourism, and spa cuisine are also subsets of culinary tourism. Culinary Tourism has been on the rise since it was officially founded in 2003 as the International Culinary Tourism Association by Erik Wolf. The ICTA has grown every year in terms of number of members and scope of programs offered.

“Some of our leading researchers—especially in information technology and the bio and life sciences—are making discoveries that have direct applications and potential for economic development for Bloomington and the entire state of Indiana,” says Bill Stephan, IU vice president for engagement.
enhancing technology commercialization efforts in Bloomington. “The Indiana University Research & Technology Corporation [IURTC] will manage the new IUIC and facilitate interaction between public research and private entrepreneurship,” says IURTC President Tony Armstrong. IURTC also manages IU’s highly successful incubator on the Central Canal in downtown Indianapolis.
Providing Space for Start-up Companies
The Indiana University Innovation Center
As a business incubator, the Bloomington facility will provide office and lab space for start-up companies, as well as assistance with business development, intellectual property protection, and trademark expertise. Start-up companies in the new facility will also have access to extensive resources on the Bloomington campus.
President Michael A. McRobbie has set a vision for Indiana University to further advance the frontiers of knowledge, making transformative contributions both to the economic welfare of our state and to the well-being of humanity at large. The new IUIC represents a significant milestone in efforts to advance this vision by
“The Indiana University Innovation Center will have a direct impact on our local economy, offering employment opportunities in the community, as well as far-reaching economic impact as start-up companies in the incubator mature and expand their activities,” says Armstrong.

The new $10 million Indiana University Innovation Center [IUIC] scheduled to open later this summer on the city’s east side will help turn critical research into entrepreneurial efforts that will benefit Hoosiers and stimulate Indiana’s economy.
Stephan notes that while the launch of new companies provides jobs and stimulus to Indiana’s economy, IU also benefits from business start-ups and licensing based on university research. “A number of these ventures are already generating a revenue stream for IU,” he says, “and research under way offers even greater potential to benefit the university and the state’s economy.” The two-story center, located at 10th Street and the State Road 45/46 Bypass, complements IU’s other economic development activities around the city of Bloomington, including the university’s facilities in the Showers Building. “We’ve worked closely with Danise Alano, director of economic development for the city of Bloomington, and Ron Walker, president of the Bloomington Economic Development Corporation, to create an incubator that enhances the community’s facilities and support for entrepreneurship,” says Armstrong.
IU Pervasive Technology Institute
The new IU Pervasive Technology Institute will occupy much of the first floor in the 40,000 squarefoot center. The institute, funded by a recent $15 million award from the Lilly Endowment

Other tenants include the Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation of the IU Kelley School of Business, the IU School of Informatics, and IURTC offices. The second floor will provide specially equipped wet-lab space that is ideal for bio and life science start-up companies. “There has been a shortage of wet-lab space in Bloomington for start-up companies,” says Armstrong, “so this space is designed specifically to fill that need.”
New Technology Corridor The IUIC is the anchor for the new technology corridor that is developing at the 10th Street site and will extend north along the Highway 45/46 Bypass to the IU Cyclotron Facility. A range of life science and technology-based enterprises are locating in the area, including the new IU Data Center and the planned Cyber Infrastructure Building that will house many of the University Information Technology Services staff.
