Pete Dye Course, French Lick

French Lick Resort Casino, site of the 1924 PGA Championship which marked a remarkable major winning streak by legendary Walter Hagen, will host 43rd PGA Professional National Championship June 27-30th. It will mark the first visit by the PGA Professional National Championship to Indiana, and to a resort that features courses designed by two of the game’s legendary golf architects – Donald Ross and Pete Dye. The National Championship, featuring a nationwide field of 312 PGA Professionals, will utilize the par-70, 7,000-yard Donald Ross Course, which opened in 1917 and the par-72, 7,400-yard Pete Dye Course on the Pete Dye Course. “The PGA Professional National Championship has maintained a tradition of bringing this showcase event to some of the premier courses in the country,” said PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb. “It is exciting to have the opportunity to bring the Championship to the site where Walter Hagen, one of our Association founders, elevated his legend. I can think of no better story for our finest playing PGA Professionals than to compete for the Walter Hagen Cup in Indiana.” The Donald Ross Course, the creation of famed Scottish architect Donald Ross, also has hosted the 1959 and 1960 LPGA Championship and was the home of the Midwest Amateur from the 1930s through the 1950s. Coincidentally, Dye captured the 1957 Midwest Amateur on the course. The Donald Ross Course completed a $6 million renovation program in 2006, conducted by architect Lee Schmidt of Scottsdale, Ariz., which restored the original Ross design. “We had photographs from 1926, two years after the PGA Championship was played, and we had Donald Ross’s original drawings on site,” said French Lick Resort Casino President Steve Ferguson. “And, we have Pete

Dye, who has been so enthusiastic about this project. We have tremendous views at each location, and to have the restoration and to have a Donald Ross Course and one of the leading designers of this era in Pete Dye is a tremendous opportunities for golfers to play both approaches to golf. “The resort is an impact on that part of the state, and the PGA Professional National Championship is a wonderful opportunity. We’re trying to impact that section of Indiana with the resort and this National Championship is important part of that plan.” “It is a rare opportunity to be playing two courses designed by two of golf’s greatest architects, the greatest classic architect, Donald Ross, and arguably the greatest modern-day architect, Pete Dye, all on the same piece of property,” said French Lick Resort Casino PGA Director of Golf Dave Harner. “We are very pleased and excited to have this Championship come to Indiana.” WINTER 2O1O I 3

South Central Indiana Welcome to South Central Indiana where you’ll find warm Hoosier hospitality at its best. South Central Indiana is built on a solid foundation of native limestone steeped in history and surrounded by Hoosier National Forest. It may be in the heart of the Midwest but is world renowned for its musicians, artists, museums, basketball, architecture, historic sites, international culture, natural caverns and not to mention outdoor recreation with the two largest lakes in the state, Monroe and Patoka boasting almost 20,000 acres of water. Bloomington, recently touted as “One of the 50 Top Adventure Towns in the Nation” by National Geographic Adventure Magazine and labeled “seventh fastest growing destination in the nation for culinary enthusiasts” by Orbitz Travel Research. Bloomington is home to Indiana University and the largest lake in the state. Columbus, a virtual museum of modern architecture, ranked sixth in the U.S. for architectural innovation and design by the American Institute of Architects and National Geographic Traveler recently ranked the city 11th out of 109 historic destinations worldwide by National Geographic Society’s Center for Sustainable Destinations, higher than any other U.S. city. Brown County, known as the “Artist Colony of the Midwest”, Brown County’s picturesque landscape, drew many artists to the area including Will Vawter, Adolph Shulz, Marie Goth, Carl Graf and T.C. Steele all established studios and residences throughout the county in the early 1900s. Today over 250 artists reside in Brown County, working in studios and galleries throughout. French Lick, established in 1845, French Lick Springs Hotel attracted guests from around the world to experience the “miracle waters” of its nearby sulfur springs. “The restoration is the last major piece of a plan to return tiny French Lick to its long-lost status as one of the Midwest’s biggest resort destinations.” – New York Times, March 2007. West Baden Springs Hotel, a National Historic Landmark, built in 1902 has been called “One of the 8th Wonders of the World.” Enjoy your time in South Central Indiana and let us show you the best of Hoosier hospitality.

Play the home of Southern Indiana’s own Masters & U.S. Open Champ, Fuzzy Zoeller! Two Courses Available Covered Bridge and Champions Pointe Bring your “A” game and your sense of humor just in case Fuzzy is watching when you play at Covered Bridge or Champions Pointe, two Fuzzy Zoeller designed courses, located just 15 minutes north of Louisville. He might be golfing, fishing or just paoking fun at your game ... and please don’t take his parking space ... he may not let you live it down. Nestled on a gently rolling plain at the foot of Southern Indiana’s famous Floyds Knobs in Sellersburg, Covered Bridge, Fuzzy’s signature course is pleasantly forested; features five lakes, a meandering creek and you’ll es-

pecially enjoy the gently contoured greens. In neighboring Henryville, Champions Pointe, Fuzzy’s newest in golf course design, has all the fun you would expect of a Fuzzy designed course. Multiple lakes and strategically placed bunkers add to the beauty of the slightly undulated greens. Fuzzy built these quality courses so the everyday public golfer can play the quality of course usually reserved only for private clubs.

Columbus is a Museum of Modern Architecture Columbus, Indiana is a one-of-a-kind community that embraced the future and chose architecture as the way to express its optimism. It’s a place where every brick tells a story. Since the early 1940’s, some of the world’s finest architects have left their impressions on this special place. This small, friendly town is a virtual museum of modern architecture with works by some of the most enduring names in architecture, like I.M. Pei, Richard Meier, Robert Venturi, as well as Eliel and Eero Saarinen, just to name a few. Great design is everywhere —in 70 modern buildings, award-winning parks and landscapes, dozens of large-scale public art installations, and even in the bridges, This is why
