Joe Bretz [IU ‘81] represented Pi Kappa Alpha in the Little 500 for four years in a row and was in the movie Breaking Away. “That movie really raised the public’s awareness

of competitive cycling and brought a lot of excitement to the event,” Bretz says. He stressed the amount of time and effort that goes into preparing for the race. The teams, composed of eight riders, begin practicing and conditioning during the fall semester, but it’s over winter break when things move into high gear. “We would spend both Christmas and Spring break practicing in Florida, usually riding 100 miles a day,” recalls Bretz,

“and then devote two to four hours every day when school was in session.” He had the opportunity to ride in the old stadium, featured in the movie, and the new one fans visit today. Bretz says while the new stadium has a smaller seating capacity, the track itself is “much safer, faster, and holds together well in the turns.” Having returned to the race yearly as a coach and as a fan, Bretz knows what to look for. “The bike exchanges are an interesting aspect for the spectator to focus

on because it is such a difficult move to execute.” Riders come in at full speed, then apply the brakes while dismounting the bike and handing it off to a team mate who then carries on the race. “It’s a little bit of art and a little bit of science.” Overall Bretz thinks the atmosphere at the Little 500 is “pretty cool. Celebrities like Lance Armstrong, John Mellencamp and David Letterman usually in attendance, and the entire event is modeled after another Indiana institution: the Indianapolis 500.” But

Known as the “World’s Greatest College Weekend” the Little 500 is the biggest intramural event on the IU campus and the largest collegiate bike race in the United States. Riders compete in four-person teams in separate races for men and women around a quarter-mile track. More than 25,000 people attend the races every year, with the proceeds used for working student scholarships at IU. Now in its 60th year, the Little 500 is known as the premier intramural collegiate cycling event in the nation. Steeped in tradition and high on enthusiasm, this race and the surrounding weekend activities have earned the reputation of being the best of its kind anywhere in the world. The Oscar-winning film Breaking Away [1979] introduced moviegoers from all over the world to IU, Bloomington, and the excitement of the Little 500.

Surviving the Dragon Arjia Rinpoche, Director of the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center in Bloomington, Indiana, is one of the most important religious leaders to escape Tibet since the Dalai Lama. His memoir, “Surviving the Dragon”, published by Rodale Book Company is in bookstores now. Surviving the Dragon is the story of Arjia Rinpoche’s growing up as the reincarnated abbot in Kumbum, one of Tibet’s major monasteries.

As a child, he was treated like a living Buddha; as a young man he emptied latrines, but after the death of Mao Tse Tung, he rose to prominence within the Chinese Buddhist bureaucracy. When he was slated to become the tutor of the Chinese selected Panchen Lama, he fled Tibet rather than betray his Buddhist religion and his Tibetan and Mongolian heritage. Rinpoche’s unique experience provides a rare vantage on this tumultuous period of Tibetan and Chinese History as well as a glimpse of life inside a Buddhist monastery in Tibet.

Indiana PGA Section Champion Todd Smith by Bob Denney

It’s nearly a four-hour drive from Todd Smith’s doorstep in Peru, Ind., to French Lick Resort, site of the 2010 PGA Professional National Championship. The 47 year -old PGA head professional at Rock Hollow Golf Club and nine-time Indiana PGA Player of the Year has enjoyed the ride before. Last August, Smith captured the Indiana PGA Championship on the Pete Dye Course, one of two venues at the historic resort to host this summer’s 43rd PGA Professional National Championship. Smith’s victory marked his sixth Indiana PGA Championship and made him one of six from his Section to earn a berth, June 27-30, in the 312 National Championship field. It is the first PGA Professional National Championship to be contested in Indiana.

traveliN SPRING 2O1O

The National Championship, which offers a $500,000 purse, is presented by Titleist, FootJoy and Cobra; and Club Car, and will be televised live by Golf Channel.

16

Smith will be joined by five Indiana PGA members, one of whom receives an automatic exemption – 1984 National Champion Bill Schumaker of Columbia City, Ind., who at age 60, is making his 29th appearance, a Championship record. Those earning a National Championship berth via the Indiana PGA Championship are: Brett Melton of Washington, Ind., the new PGA director of Instruction at the Country Club of Old Vincennes; Brad Fellers, a PGA teaching professional at the Wood Wind Golf Academy in Rochester.; Jim Ousley,

a PGA head professional at Tippecanoe Country Club in Monticello; and Blair Shadday, a PGA assistant professional at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville. Chad Jones, formerly of the Sagamore Club of Noblesville and who earned his National Championship berth last August, recently accepted a position as PGA director of instruction at The Concession Golf Club of Sarasota, Fla. You would assume that any native Hoosier entered in the National Championship would have a distinct advantage. Smith offered a new perspective after his playoff victory over Melton on the second extra hole. Both players had tied after 54 holes at 9-over-par 223. “I don’t know if local knowledge will play a big factor in this Championship,” said Smith. “These two golf courses [Donald Ross and Pete Dye] are all about hitting good shots. The nice thing is that all of us Indiana players don’t have to travel as far and we are familiar with the area. “I haven’t played any golf course as difficult as the Pete Dye Course that I thought was that fair rewarding good shots and penalizing poor shots. The golf courses are extremely scenic and are always in perfect condition. The green sites on both courses are very difficult. The winner of this Championship will be a very good iron player. If you miss your shots into the green in the wrong places you will pay the price. The Pete Dye Course is the best golf course I have ever played.” Smith, whose best finish in a National Championship was a share of third place in 1993, said there wasn’t a mystery to his holding on to win the Indiana PGA Championship at the award-winning, scenic Pete Dye Course. “I was able to avoid big mistakes,” said Smith. “I made two key birdies in the final round [76] on holes No. 5 and 13. There are some very difficult holes, and when you have chances to make birdies you need to make birdies.” Melton, who grew up only 35 miles from French Lick in Raglesville, is entering his sixth National Championship. His previous best performance was a tie for sixth in 2005.

“There’s no other course like it in Indiana, that’s for sure,” said Schumaker, the PGA head professional since 1977 at Crooked Lake Golf Course in Columbia City. “I think that it’s neat to see the National Championship coming to Indiana. I didn’t think that it would ever get to Indiana. I know that the resort and the Section will put their respective best foot forward to make it special.” The French Lick Resort., site of the 1924 PGA Championship, marked a remarkable major winning streak by legendary Walter Hagen, whose name adorns the crystal cup presented to the PGA Professional National Champion. “I’m very proud to be able to participate in this National Championship in my home state,” said Smith, a former president of the Indiana PGA Section. “It will be very nice to showcase such an incredible facility. I have always enjoyed playing in National Championships when the golf courses are difficult and pars are good scores.” The National Championship, featuring a nationwide field of 312 PGA Professionals, will utilize the par-70, 6,885-yard Donald Ross Course, which opened in 1917 and the par-72, 7,174-yard Pete Dye Course, which debuted in the spring of 2009. The Championship’s final two rounds will be conducted on the Pete Dye Course.

40 WINTER 2010

The Donald Ross Course, the creation of famed Scottish architect Donald Ross, also has hosted the 1959 and 1960 LPGA Championship and was the home of the Midwest Amateur from the 1930s through the 1950s. Coincidentally, Dye captured the 1957 Midwest Amateur on the course. The Donald Ross Course completed a $6 million renovation program in 2006, conducted by architect Lee Schmidt of Scottsdale, Ariz., which restored the original Ross design. Dye, who was the 2004 PGA Distinguished Service Award winner, has been the host architect for previous PGA Professional National Championships in 1989-90 at PGA West-Stadium Course in La Quinta, Calif.; in 1999 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis., and in 2005 at The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. Begun in 1968, the PGA Professional National Championship brings together the finest playing PGA Professionals representing The PGA of America’s 41 nationwide Sections. Since 1916, The PGA of America’s mission has been twofold; to establish and elevate the standards of the profession and to grow interest and participation in the game of golf. I rank it as one of the most difficult and most scenic courses I’ve ever played. The views you get, you would swear that you are somewhere else in the world other than Indiana. Thomas Chambers [American born England, 1808– 1869]. Landscape with Mount Vesuvius,©1843– 60. Oil on canvas. IU Art Museum, Morton and Marie Bradley Memorial Collection, 98.38

First museum survey of paintings by Thomas Chambers sheds new light on ‘America’s First Modern’

[1808-1869], American Marine and Landscape Painter [March 26 – May 30, 2010] includes 44 of the artist’s works, approximately 15 paintings and prints by his contemporaries and a selection of decorative arts from the

heyday of American “fancy” taste. Although much of his life has been a mystery until recently, Chambers played a pioneering role in the development of popular American landscape and maritime art in the mid-19th century. His distinctive style has been widely recognized since the 1940s, when he was rediscovered as a precursor to American modern artists. Chambers’ work has been included in numerous surveys of American art, but until now his paintings have never been assembled to consider the breadth of his career. The exhibition is drawn from private and public collections, including the Indiana University Art Museum. After debuting in Philadelphia, the show traveled to two New York venues before its arrival in Bloomington this March.

“We are delighted to present this groundbreaking exhibition,” said Kathleen A. Foster, the Robert L. McNeil Jr. Senior Curator of American Art and Director of the Center for American Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “It is remarkable that such a captivating personality in American art history has been studied so little. The exhibition and catalogue that accompany the installation provide a wealth of previously unknown information about Chambers, whose story and achievements are far more complex than anyone previously realized.” Free Admission

Thomas Chambers: American Marine and Landscape Painter, 1808-1869

March 27 through May 30, 2010 Thomas Chambers played a pioneering role in the development of popular American landscape and maritime painting in the mid-nineteenth century. This groundbreaking exhibition was organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and its Center for American Art, in association with the Indiana University Art Museum. More than half the paintings in this show, which completes its national tour in Bloomington, are from the IU Art Museum’s collection. The exhibition was supported by a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. William C. Buck. Additional support was provided by the Morton C. Bradley Jr. Fund at Indiana University.

Columbus, Indiana is a one-of-a-kind community that embraced the future and chose architecture as the way to express its optimism. It’s a place where every brick tells a story. Since the early 1940’s, some of the world’s finest architects have left their impressions on this special place. This small, friendly town is a virtual museum

of modern architecture with works by some of the most enduring names in architecture, like I.M. Pei, Richard Meier, Robert Venturi, as well as Eliel and Eero Saarinen, just to name a few. Great design is everywhere—in 70 modern buildings, award-winning parks and landscapes, dozens of large-scale public art installations, and even in the bridges, This is why the American Institute of Architects ranked the city sixth in the U.S. for architectural innovation and design.

IU Campuses Get New Facelift IU trustees approve design of new music studio building, science and engineering lab

The Indiana University Board of Trustees approved the design of a new Studio Building for the Jacobs School of Music at the IU Bloomington campus and approved construction of a new Science and Engineering Laboratory Building on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus. Trustees also gave the go-ahead to an estimated $2 million project to put a new roof on Assembly Hall in Bloomington. The 85,000-square-foot Studio Building will be constructed on the northeast corner of Third Street and

Jordan Avenue at an estimated total project cost of $44 million. The facility is expected to provide technologically and acoustically superior teaching and practice facilities to rival any music school or conservatory in the world, while also marking the entrance to the university’s music and performing arts district. The project also involves an addition to the west side of the Musical Arts Center that will accommodate about 20,000 square feet consisting of three large rehearsal rooms, a storage area, an audio control room, music technical shops and common spaces. Both additions are intended to complement the Jacobs School’s existing facilities. The estimated cost of the entire project is $44 million and is funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment. The trustees approval will also set in motion the construction of the Science and Engineering Laboratory Building at IUPUI, the first step in an effort to meet the

space needs of the Schools of Science [SOS] and Engineering and Technology [E&T]. Construction on the project will occur in two phases. Bloomington’s Love Affair With Local Foods by Brandon Butler

It’s difficult to explain what makes Bloomington so special. When asked to try, most people will usually start by saying something about the culture, but then drift off as they can’t really put their finger on what it is about the culture that makes this place unique. My personal take on it—Bloomington is natural.

GREGG "RAGS" RA GO - NICK'S ENGLISH

Aside from being surrounded by the most pristine natural resources of Indiana, the people are natural. It’s a place where all walks of life fit together, and for the most part, genuinely care for one another. So it makes perfect sense

behind the growing movement to use locally produced foods in their establishments. Gregg “Rags” Rago has experienced a lot of changes during the 33 years he’s been at Nick’s English Hut. One change the now managing partner has been instrumental in bringing about is the restaurant’s use of local foods. “We’ve been into using local for over ten years, but it’s getting bigger now because there are more growers and producers catching on to the craze,” Rags said. “Fifteen years ago, the general public wasn’t as interested in where their food came from. But as people have become more aware, and more demanding, growers have caught on. It’s a supply and demand thing.” Nick’s uses a lot of local ingredients, including all grass fed Fischer Farms beef, Stanley Hall pork, vegetables from numerous growers, and elk meat from

ability of yellow perch has dwindled. Enter Bell Aquaculture in Albany, Indiana.

David Talent, owner/chef of Restaurant Talent, has a talent for pork.

“People love perch, and now we have a supplier that can consistently deliver an all natural product, without damaging the natural resource,” Bailey said. “On top of that, we’re frying the perch in Fry Tech Edible Oils, which produce no waste. The entire meal is environmentally friendly.”

“Pork is my thing,” Talent said. “I only use heritage breed, real pork. Forget this ‘the new white meat stuff,’ pork is naturally rich and red, and should have a little fat to add great flavor. Since it’s natural, it’s much better for you than this new engineered ‘white meat.’” All of Talent’s pork comes from counties around Bloomington, with a majority coming from Brown County. His braised pork belly complimented by sweat tea gastrique with locally grown butternut squash grits is one of his personal favorite dishes.

Malibu Grill is currently serving perch as a sandwich and appetizer. In Bloomington, a city that embraces a natural way of life, local organic foods are gaining in popularity. And why not? Such foods are generally more healthy, are more environmentally friendly, and support the local economy. A true win-win for all involved.

Featured Chef by Brandon Butler When Eric Cole left the quaint Village of Nashville to attend the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, he didn’t plan on returning home. Well, at least not as soon as he did, anyway. Upon completion of his culinary school experience, Cole took off across the country to California, where he worked in restaurant along the Pacific Coast just north of San Francisco in Marin County. All of our faith traditions share this in common: we are called to feed the hungry. The Interfaith Hunger Initiative consists of two dozen faith communities in the Indianapolis area who are working together to help end child and family hunger In 2009 the efforts of the Interfaith Hunger Initiative congregations made it possible to procure 275 tons of food for pantries, and feed 2700 vulnerable children in Kenya through school-lunch programs. We create community and hope, share our common wisdom, and act with passionate compassion. For more information, visit our website at interfaithhungerinitiative.org.
