Indiana Artisan is craftsmanship. It is fine oils and wines, handmade soaps and handturned bowls. It is Lake Michigan artists and Ohio River Valley craftsmen, popcorn growers near the Old National Road and chocolatiers of perfection. Indiana Artisan is the state's best craftspeople—from specialty cheese makers to specialty jewelry makers and from the hands of careful beekeepers to those of caring weavers. Indiana's heritage in glass, musical instruments, stoneware, woodwork, candies, brandies and more is defined through Indiana Artisan.
Who is an Indiana Artisan?
A craftsman. A maker of specialty cheeses. A creator of handmade stoneware. A painter. A beekeeper, a woodworker. A winemaker, a jewelry designer, a weaver. An Indiana Artisan is a Hoosier recognized for careful attention to detail, knowledge of a craft and an entrepreneurial spirit. Their extraordinary talent contributes to Indiana's reputation for quality work.

"Indiana is home to hundreds of talented artisans and boasts a variety of unique handmade products." - Lt. Governor Becky Skillman Your journey begins at IndianaArtisan.org Look for the Indiana Artisan logo throughout the magazine to discover Indiana’s best craftspeople, you’ll be glad you did.

offered a $25,000 purse, attracting 40 cars and a crowd of 80,000. It was the first 500-mile race in history. Ray Harroun, driving a Marmon Wasp, won the inaugural running with relief help from Cyrus Patschke at an average speed of 74.602 miles per hour. Fisher and his partners, James Allison, Arthur Newby and Frank Wheeler, also envisioned IMS as a test track for the burgeoning automobile industry. The 500 became the laboratory of speed, safety and technology innovations, a tradition that continues to this day. Under the current formula, IndyCars reach top speeds of 230 miles per hour at Indianapolis. Helio Castroneves averaged 224.864 miles per hour in winning the pole and Will Power had the fastest race lap at 225.090 in 2010. Dario Franchitti won the race, averaging 161.623 in a race slowed by 44 laps under caution. The winner’s share of the $13,592,815 purse was $2,752,055. Franchitti returns with Target Chip Ganassi Racing going for his third win in four years. He also won in 2007. Top contenders include three-
time Indy 500 winner Castroneves, 2008 Indy 500 winner Scott Dixon and Andretti Autosports’ Danica Patrick, the first woman to lead the 500 in 2005 and the highest-placed woman with a third in 2009.
Indianapolis is the racing capital of the world. If they were alive today, IMS founders Fisher, Allison, Newby and Wheeler would be proud of the legacy they created. Practice for the Indy 500 is May 15-20. Pole Day qualifying is May 21, followed by Bump Day on the 22nd. Miller Lite Carb Day on May 27 is the final day for practice for the IndyCars and also features the Firestone Freedom 100, a 40-lap race with IndyCar’s top development Indy Lights Series. The Indy 500 spawned a culture of racing and a racing industry in central Indiana and there are opportunities to see multiple races, tracks and series during May.

The night before the 500 on May 28 features three series from the Mazda Road to Indy, the driver development system for the IZOD IndyCar Series, at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. USAC’s Mopar National Midgets, the Cooper Tires presents the USF2000 National Championship and the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear will be in action on the .686-mile paved oval. The legendary Pay Less Little 500 at Anderson [Indiana] Speedway, located northeast of Indianapolis, is also run on May 28. The Little 500 is 33 Sprint Cars running 500 laps on the quartermile, high-banked paved track and has two mandatory pit stops, unusual for Sprint Cars. It has been held continuously since 1949. Eric Gordon won in 2010, his record ninth in the Little 500. USAC’s powerful Silver Crown cars race at the 1-mile dirt track at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on West 38th Street in Indianapolis on May 27. USAC’s Amsoil National Sprint Car dirt championship is at the Action Track in Terre Haute, west of Indianapolis near the Illinois border, in May. USAC’s pavement Sprint Car championship races at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis on May 12, June 16, July 7, August 18, September 8 and October 13.
The summer has plenty of racing in Indianapolis, too.
NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series competes in the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway on July 31. Practice begins the event on July 29 and qualifying is the next day. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Jamie McMurray won the race in 2010. Jimmie Johnson, winner of five straight Sprint Cup championships from 2006 to 2010, Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch are among the many top drivers in Sprint Cup. Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis holds the Kroger SpeedFest the same weekend. On July 28, there is a tripleheader of USAC’s National Midgets and Silver Crown and ARCA stock cars. On July 29, the AAA Insurance 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series are in action. NASCAR’s Nationwide Series completes the SpeedFest on Saturday, July 30.
Indianapolis is home to the majority of IndyCar and many sports car teams, too. Gasoline Alley in the town of Speedway in the near west side to Indianapolis has a diverse group of teams, fabricators and teams. IndyCar constructor Dallara, with its headquarters in Italy, operates out of Gasoline Alley, but it is building a new facility in Speedway to produce the next generation of IndyCar for the 2012 season. IndyCar teams such as Andretti Autosport, Ganassi and Panther Racing can be found spread over metro Indianapolis. Indianapolis is the racing capital of the world. If they were alive today, IMS founders Fisher, Allison, Newby and Wheeler would be proud of the legacy they created.
Drag racing’s premier event is also held at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. The National Hot Rod Association’s 57th Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, mecca for professional and sportsman drag racers, will be held September 1-5. Many of the NHRA teams from its professional Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock divisions are based in nearby Brownsburg, which also has IndyCar, USAC and other open-wheel teams. A city that has long been known as a place where racer’s lived has become one where they work.

Home to more than 59,500 farms, Indiana ranks in the top ten nationally in the production of ducks, eggs, popcorn and soybeans, and exports approximately $44 million in agricultural goods to international markets each year. Tourism is Indiana’s third largest industry, attracting more than 49 million people and $6.7 billion in visitor spending to our state each year. In Indiana, more than 11,000 businesses
and organizations depend, at least in part, on visitor spending. Farmers throughout the state continue to look for ways to add value to their products. By strengthening the relationship between tourism and agriculture and developing a statewide agrtourism initiative, the state can maximize the opportunities for growth and future sustainability in both of these important industries.

The Indiana men's golf team heads into this season with a mix of lofty aspirations and high confidence after a fall campaign that included a pair of top-five finishes and ended with two straight tournament titles. Head Coach Mike Mayer and the Hoosiers [No. 25 GolfweekSagarin/No. 33 Golfstat] hope their progress and effort in the fall will translate into big things during the coming months. "It's a special group of kids in a lot of ways," said Mayer. "I think we have a lot of talent, but we have people who work hard and people who really deserve to win. Every good thing that happens to this team is based on the work that they've done and these kids have worked really, really hard in the fall." The Cream and Crimson will look for leadership from juniors David Erdy and Chase Wright, a tandem that have been mainstays in the Hoosier lineup during their careers. Erdy, a Boonville, Indiana native, is currently third on the Indiana career stroke average list with a 73.40. Wright is fifth on that list with a 73.54 career average. "I've never had two better leaders on this team and I've had some pretty good leaders," said
Mayer. "Ability-wise they're pretty special as well. I'm looking for one of these two guys to really breakout this spring. That would really change the dynamics of this team." Sophomore Brant Peaper and freshman David Mills had impressive fall campaigns, competing in all five events for the Hoosiers, including top-five finishes for both at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate. Including Kiawah, Peaper had a trio of top-10 finishes during the fall and looks to be a consistent threat in the Hoosier lineup.

the billing. The newcomer is currently on pace, with an average of 72.93, to have the second lowest freshman season scoring average in school history.
Former Hoosier standout Jeff Overton recently hosted Inside the PGA Tour on the Golf Channel, a weekly all-access show that gives you a look at PGA Tour life you won't find anywhere else. Some IU campus locations were included in the show. Overton, a PGA Tour member since 2006, is coming off a stellar 2010 season which included six top-10 finishes and a spot on the United States Ryder Cup team.
"He's a true freshman that is simply a tough, young son-of-a-gun," said Mayer. "This kid is not afraid to get the golf ball in the hole. He's not afraid to score and as we change him a little bit fundamentally and change his swing a little bit, he could be really special."

Indiana’s World-Class Museums Contributed by Paul Sturm Associate Director for Development and Marketing Indiana University Art Museum
Indiana is full of surprises. Breathtaking natural beauty; David-&-Goliath sports stories; cutting edge scientific research; top notch artists, authors, and performers: Indiana has it all. Time and again, visitors to our Hoosier state tell stories with excited delight about all the things they discovered when visiting. There are many reasons to celebrate Indiana; many reasons to visit our beautiful, vibrant state. One of these has to be our remarkable array of world-class museums. From the northern border with Michigan to the southern banks along the Ohio River, Indiana is filled with hundreds of art and science museums, historical sites and history centers, children’s museums and discovery centers,
and other attractions that offer memorable visits for the whole family. If your interest is history, Conner Prairie [in Fishers] is the nation’s finest outdoor living history museum and is Indiana’s only Smithsonian Institution Affiliate museum. Following ground breaking research into how families learn, Conner Prairie completely revamped its approach to the visitor experience in 2003, according to Ellen Rosenthall, President and CEO of Conner Prairie, becoming the country’s first “Interactive History Park.” “Engage, Enlighten, Excite” came to be the museum’s theme as it added many new indoor and outdoor handsCONTINUED ON PAGE 4 on experiences,

At more than 470,000 square feet and featuring 11 permanent exhibits dedicated to the arts, sciences and humanities, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is the largest children’s museum in the world. In 2004, the museum opened Dinosphere®: Now You’re In Their World, an immersive exhibit featuring the largest collection of dinosaur fossils in a children’s museum in the Unites States.
“INDIANA’S WORLD CLASS MUSEUMS” CONTINUED
expanding the scope of history explored. These included Discovery Station, Animal Encounters, Science Lab and the 1859 Balloon Voyage. In the past five years, attendance and membership have increased yearly. In 2011, Conner Prairie continues its trend of immersing visitors in exciting experiences when it opens 1863 Civil War Journey: Raid on Indiana about the Civil War. But there are also more than 70 other historical museums throughout the state, including the Indiana State Museum and the Indiana History Center [both in Indianapolis], the T.C. Steele Historic Site [in Nashville], and the Wylie House Museum [in Bloomington]. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is the world’s largest children’s museum, with a history that dates back to 1925. You can easily spend the whole day at this amazing museum in the heart of our state capital. But if you’re visiting elsewhere in the state, Indiana also has WonderLab [in Bloomington], Imagination Station [in Lafayette], the Children’s Science and Technology Museum [in Terre Haute], and many other kidfriendly museums that will educate as well as entertain. In the arts, the Indianapolis Museum of Art [IMA] and the Indiana University Art Museum [in Bloomington] represent two wonderful and renowned art museums with important
collections and provocative exhibitions. And there are other options for connoisseurs of the arts, including the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art [in Indianapolis], the Swope Art Museum [in Terre Haute], the Richmond Art Museum [in Richmond], and many others. Indiana museums are also at the cutting edge of interactive technology and exhibitions. The Indiana History Center and Children’s Museum of Indianapolis are national leaders in the use of new tech to enhance visitor experiences, and the Eiteljorg’s “Jingle Rails” interactive exhibit was a 2010 holiday hit with visitors. Let’s face it: museums are tremendous fun and tremendously informative. They entertain us, and they offer learning experiences that can transform our lives. Museum visits are perfect ways to spend a few free hours [for those of us who live here], and they are memorable destinations for our visitors from across the country or around the globe. And with many of our museums offering free admission, they are ideal activities for budget-minded families and travelers. So this is your welcome to the wonderful world of Indiana museums! Explore, discover, and prepare to be delighted— maybe even surprised—by all that you’ll see.

New location on the Courthouse Square houses successful gallery, photography and design business After 22 years in less visible locations, photographer Kendall Reeves has moved his base of operations to the courthouse square. gallery406, named for its previous address on South Walnut Street, moved to the historic Wicks Building this January and now occupies the space formerly inhabited by Wandering Turtle.

At any given time, visitors will find a variety of Reeves’s work on display, including his well-known images of Indiana University and scenes of Bloomington and Monroe County, many of which are also available as postcards. Reeves also makes his display space available to other photographers on a rotating basis, which qualifies gallery406 to participate in Bloomington’s Gallery Walk the first Friday of every other month. Currently on display are photographs by Chris Howell, photographer at the Herald-Times, from his weekly series Pathways, which offers glimpses into the everyday life of individuals in the local community. Past shows have featured work by Darryl Jones, Michael A. Finger, and Kyle Spears, among others. But gallery406 is much more than a venue for displaying artwork. Reeves and his business partner, Stephanie—who is also his wife—operate the gallery in conjunction with Spectrum Studio of Photography and Design, which Reeves opened in 1989, three years after earning a degree in commercial and industrial photography from Ivy Tech Columbus. Today he counts Ivy Tech among his clients, along
with Indiana University, IU Health [formerly Bloomington Hospital], and numerous businesses, artists, and private individuals. When Stephanie—a graphic designer— joined the business in 2006, Spectrum Studio expanded its services to include graphic design, from corporate identity, logos, and brochures to camera-ready ads, magazine layouts, and trade show displays. Behind the lofty gallery space is a busy working studio where Reeves processes digital files and operates photographic printing, mounting, and laminating services for clients throughout the Midwest. With a 60-inch archival inkjet printer, Spectrum Studio is capable of largeformat printing for posters and trade show banners. The business also offers giclée printing on a variety of materials—canvas, photographic paper, and fine art papers—and prints on vinyl. Those eye-catching weatherproof event calendars around town? They’re his work, produced for the Bloomington Convention and Visitors Bureau. As if this weren’t enough, Reeves has two published books—Terre Haute: Crossroads of America, and Bloomington: A Contemporary Portrait—and has another forthcoming. A Home of Her Own, featuring over 100 color images, has been a collaborative project with author/cabinetmaker Nancy Hiller and is scheduled for publication by the Indiana University Press this October.

artists, with a focus on photography. Reeves first opened the gallery in 2008, after years of lamenting Bloomington’s scarce venues for showing photographic art. “I had wanted my own work to be visible on a regular basis,” he explains. “I decided to open my own gallery.”

Later that afternoon the Taste of Bloomington opens its gates to the thousands of guests that flock to the Showers Common each year. This is
really one of the most fun events of the year, for locals and visitors alike. The focus of the event is food, of course, with dozens of restaurants providing samplings of their best dishes from Hoosier favorites to international cuisine. Almost all of the restaurants represented are local, and in a town that’s known for its culinary scene, this is a great way to try something new and delicious.
Local Arts and Food Weekend BY JULIE WARREN WITH VISITBLOOMINGTON.COM
Arts Fair on the Square and Taste of Bloomington coming up in June
There’s live music all day long, plus activities for the kiddies. And for the adults, refreshing beverages will be available, including selections from the local breweries and wineries. This is the most fun you’ll have at City Hall, guaranteed! This is truly a great time to visit Bloomington, and these two events are one of the highlight
bloomington I events
Once May rolls around and IU breaks for summer, Bloomington takes on a slower pace. Locals love this time of year, when the weather is mild, the town is a little quieter and you can get into a restaurant without a 30 minute wait. But the relaxed atmosphere can be misleading: it may be peaceful but it’s certainly not sleepy! In fact, one of the best events of the year takes place in mid-June. Well, it’s actually a combination of two events, but together they make for an enriching and entertaining weekend. The Arts Fair on the Square is exactly that—an arts fair that showcases local and regional artists, taking place right on the Courthouse Square. You can shop for jewelry, paintings, pottery and various other types of artwork, and get information on local arts groups and events. The Arts Fair on the Square is now put on by the Bloomington Playwrights Project, an organization known for its creativity and quality, so this year’s Fair is certain to be full of energy. If you’re an art lover, or just an admirer, you can enjoy art in a casual atmosphere in the heart of downtown Bloomington.
events of the summer. Arts Fair on the Square is a free event and more details can be found at artsfair.org. Tickets to the Taste of Bloomington are $6 and kids under 12 years old are free. You can find more information at tasteofbloomington.com. You don’t want to miss out on experiencing the true local flavor of Bloomington so make plans to attend!

Nearly all of its 100-square miles of forest has been preserved. The site has received numerous environmental awards from the Department of Natural Resources. The 2011 Crane CycleFest ride offers courses of 15, 30, 50 and 65 miles, all winding through the beautifully forested Crane Naval

Mother Bears Pizza BY BRANDON BUTLER
Incredible food in a comfortable atmosphere, a Bloomington favorite since 1973
Even in a city recognized for distinguished culinary delight, sometimes you just want to grab a pizza. When such is the case, forget the chains. Go where the locals go—Mother Bear’s. A Bloomington favorite since 1973, Mother Bear’s Pizza offers incredible food in a comfortable atmosphere.

Bear’s the best place to eat in Bloomington," said owner, Ray McConn. Pizza can be ordered anyway you like, from plain cheese to the works, but before going with your personal tried and true, check out some of the gourmet options on the menu, like the Tuscaloosa Touchdown [shredded smoked pork loin coated in Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce with red onions, banana peppers, and fontina cheese], or the Cosmo [vodka sauce topped with gourmet Italian sausage, smoked bacon, portabella mushrooms and assiago cheese].
Mother Bear’s may be famous for its pizza, but the pasta dinners and hot subs are also some of the best around, and the Strawberry Lemonade, well, you’ll just have to try it. Awards are nice, and any restaurant should be thrilled to win one or two. At the rate Mother Bear’s is racking them up though, they’re going to need another wall to hang all their plaques on. Mother Bear’s has won the “Best of Bloomington—Best Pizza” award for six years in a row, and was recently honored to be named the 2010 “Best of Bloomington – Best Restaurant.” Mother Bear’s is more than just a restaurant, it’s an experience. The sort of place where all are welcome. The dining room is constantly buzzing with energy as college students fill booths next to families. Kids can be kids, and adults can have a beer. “The culture has been developed over time,” McConn said. “Mother Bear’s is comfortable, casual and interesting because that’s what our customers expect and our employees deliver.” Great food, a friendly staff, and regular eruptions of laughter make Mother Bear’s the perfect spot to get ready for the game, or to unwind after a long day of traveling.

fashioned way with garbanzo beans soaking overnight for the next days lunch, and the pita ovens are always baking. Natutrally, when Gyros were added to the menu in 2011, this too, was done in house. Gyros at Falafels are made each day from fresh cuts of beef and lamb unlike most "gyros" which are made from pre-processed chunks of meat that restaurants plop onto their vertical rotisserie. The restaurant owners have developed a blend of 12 herbs and spices which are used to season the fresh cuts of beef and lamb, making for a delicious treat. It is served with a creamy tzatziki sauce, and the reception has been so wonderful that it is quickly becoming their most popular fare. A little known fact is that Falafels also operates a small scale bake shop on site, supplying local restaurants and grocery stores. “We take popular street food from the Middle East and serve it fresh in the only full service restaurant of its kind in the area,” says Victor Varela who oversees the operations of the restaurant.

Made in America– Handmade in Brown County Come Out and Play! Experience the Arts For over 100 years, artists have been creating handmade works of art in Brown County, Indiana. From the early years of the pleinair painters to today, artists have embraced the scenic rolling hills and been drawn to the charm of the laid back lifestyle. Using the natural resources from the region, today’s artists continue to create their own unique style, proudly creating handmade items and
works of art. Now, the artists are inviting you to come and play with them, to get inspired and be creative. This summer, artists are teaching their forms of art to anyone who is willing to learn. “If you have the desire to be creative, these artists will inspire and teach you to make something from the heart” organizer Ms. Anderson said. “With over 75 classes to choose from, selecting the classes you want to participate in will be your hardest decision, and you will definitely want to plan on spending more than a day.” Many of the classes are providing the supplies for the students, making it easy for them to just “show up and begin creating”. A majority of the students will take home a finished product. Class schedules are flexible, offering half-day, full day and multi-day sessions. The range of art mediums is amazing; the variety of classes and workshops being offered will surprise everyone. Traditional courses include: Painting & Drawing, Writing, Clay, Jewelry, Fiber Arts, Woodworking, Music and some lectures. A number of fun and interesting non-traditional categories include: Mixed Media, Folk Art, Culinary, Theater, Movement, Dance, Healing and Just for Kids.
Just For Kids will get involved with a host of theater discoveries including: stunts, makeup, costumes, acting and singing. Ballet classes will offer movement while the weeklong watercolor classes will provide creative freedom. Family papermaking teaches parents and children how to make paper, completing a wall hanging and paper for handmade cards. This new event was created to attract families to Brown County during the summer while offering them an opportunity to meet and learn from the resident artists. Classes have been designed to allow parents and students to learn together, while some classes are just for the kids, so Mom or Dad can embark on their own art journey. Registration is now open for the two-week class period from June 20-July 1. Class sizes are small to allow for a more intimate learning experience between student and artist. Lodging discounts are available to enrolled students. For complete details about Come and Experience the Arts in Brown County, a full listing of class courses and registration is available on the website: experiencebrowncounty.com or call 812-988-7140.

Miller House And Garden Modernist National Historic Landmark open for public tours in May
80 0 -468 -6564| | columbus.in.us columbus.in.us 80 0 -468 -6564
Located in Columbus, Indiana, and one of the country’s most highly regarded examples of mid-century Modernist residences, Miller House was designed by Eero Saarinen, with interiors by Alexander Girard, and landscape design by Dan Kiley. Members of the Miller family donated the house and gardens, along with many of its original furnishings, to the Indianapolis Museum of Art [IMA] in 2009. Additionally, members of the Miller family and the Irwin-Sweeney-Miller Foundation have donated $5 million to establish an endowment for the house and surrounding grounds. The IMA is working with the Columbus Area Visitors Center to offer public guided tours of the house and gardens beginning in May 2011. Visitors can purchase tickets online. Miller House and Garden is owned and cared for by the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Tours at Miller House and Garden are made possible through the Columbus Area Visitors Center.
“Miller House showcases the work of leading 20th-century architects and designers and we believe that it’s important to preserve this internationally known jewel in the Columbus, Indiana, community,” said Maxwell L. Anderson, the Melvin & Bren Simon Director and CEO of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. “We look forward to making this significant Modernist landmark available to the public.” Columbus, Indiana, is ranked sixth in the nation by the American Institute of Architects for architectural innovation and design. National Geographic Traveler ranked Columbus as America’s most significant historic place on the strength of its architectural heritage. As a way to attract outstanding architectural talent to design public facilities in the central Indiana community of Columbus, Miller created the Architecture Design Program within The Cummins Foundation. Miller met Eero Saarinen during the construction of the First Christian Church in Columbus, which was designed by Saarinen’s father Eliel. Eero Saarinen helped Miller design the Architecture Design Program and recruit rising young architectural talent to participate in the 1950s. In addition to the Cummins Foundation’s Architecture Design
Program, which funded excellent design for public facilities, Cummins, other businesses and many churches in Columbus adopted the same strategy of using good design to create a more economically vibrant and livable city. Today there are more than 70 buildings by noted modern architects—such as I. M. Pei, Cesar Pelli, Robert Venturi, Richard Meier, John Carl Warnecke and Harry Weese—in the city, as well as public art works by internationally renowned architects and artists.

Commissioned by industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia Simons Miller in 1952, Miller House and Garden was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000. The house expands upon an architectural tradition developed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—epitomizing the international Modernist aesthetic—with an open and flowing layout, flat roof and vast stone and glass walls. The rooms, configured beneath a grid pattern of skylights supported by cruciform steel columns, are filled with strong colors and playful patterns. Amid the residence’s large geometric gardens,
its grandest feature is an allée of honey locust trees that runs along the west side of the house. The Miller House was the first designated National Historic Landmark listed with a stillliving landscape architect that also was still occupied by its original owners at the date of its designation.
