A Legacy Like No Other As the world’s longest-running travel company, Cox & Kings has been designing, organizing and leading exceptional journeys since we operated our first expedition to India in 1758. Since then, we’ve been at the forefront of exploration, organizing the first attempted expedition to Mount Everest in 1922 and bringing Mahatma Gandhi to Europe in 1933. Over the past quarter millennium, we’ve broken down barriers, unlocked doors, seen new vistas and laid the world at the feet of those who’ve traveled with us. In other words, we’ve been around the world a few times… and we’re passionate about delivering vibrant and indelible travel experiences.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA Stretching across the mountainous ridgelines of China for nearly 4,000 miles, the Great Wall was designed to keep the nomadic tribes to the north from overrunning the imperial capital in Beijing. The section near Mutianyu is particularly striking as it winds its way among the mountain pines and fragrant chestnut trees. In addition, because of its location, it doesn’t see as many visitors as other sections of the wall. If you’re lucky, you may even find yourself with a moment of solitude as you stroll along the Great Wall with the wind whistling through the pines—just as it did hundreds of years ago. TIBET Tibet, the “Roof of the World”, is the highest region on earth with an average altitude of 16,000 feet. Spectacular snow-capped mountains, rivers and lakes, and open grassland dominate the landscape of the Tibetan plateau. Rich in culture and unique ethnic traditions, the culture of Tibet has been profoundly influenced by their own brand of Buddhism. Some of the greatest sights in the capital, Lhasa, include the Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Bazaar, Potala Palace and Norbulingka (the traditional summer palace of the Dalai Lama).

HONG KONG
Temple of Ten Thousand Buddhas, Hong Kong
Hong Kong is one of the world’s most modern and dynamic cities, yet beyond its gleaming skyscrapers and its streets and shopping arcades of neon, Hong Kong can still give insight into ancient Chinese customs and traditions. Explore the maze of streets around Western District on Hong Kong Island or Mongkok in Kowloon, with their street food stalls and flower and bird markets. Or venture into the little-known green hills of the New Territories with their traditional small villages. Hong Kong’s transport system is a highlight in itself, especially the Star Ferry across the harbor or the Peak Tram.
The ancient walled city of Pingyao, dating from the Ming and Qing dynasties, is considered one of the best-preserved historic towns in China. In 1997, Pingyao was put on the UNESCO World Heritage List for retaining all of the features of those ancient eras. The citation from UNESCO also states “Pingyao presents a picture of the unusual cultural, social, economic, and religious development in Chinese history”. There are several delightful guesthouses, including the Pingyao International Financier’s Club, which is a renovated, 300-year-old house.
Gyantse Monastery, Tibet
HUANG SHAN Huang Shan, known as ‘the loveliest mountain of China’, was acclaimed through art and literature during a good part of Chinese history. Today it is renowned for its magnificent scenery and holds the same fascination for visitors. Why not overnight on the summit to enjoy sunsets and sunrises surrounded by a mountain range of 72 peaks, mountain streams and alpine flora. Dotted around the paddy fields below are charming rural villages with historic Chinese buildings dating from feudal times, including Hong Cun and Xi Di which were made famous by Ang Lee’s epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
HANGZHOU Once described by Marco Polo as the most splendid city in the world, Hangzhou (capital of Zhejiang Province) developed as a prosperous commercial city as early as the 6th century and later became the capital of the Song Dynasty. Hangzhou, known as ‘Heaven on Earth’ is now a more peaceful town set around the tranquil and scenic Xi Hu or “West Lake”, overlooked by green hills and tea plantations – it’s home to the famous Longjing (Dragon Well) tea. Now a Special Administrative Region of China and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it retains its Portuguese atmosphere with pavement cafés, public squares with pastel-colored colonial buildings and Baroque churches. Japan’s Ryokan Experience SUGGESTED ITINERARY:
Custom Designed Journeys Japan Cox & Kings can offer custom designed journeys, which allow you to create a personalized experience of Japan, traveling at your own pace and exploring further off the beaten track. The suggestions below give a taste of the many possible options. Please contact Cox & Kings to discuss further ideas with one of our Japan experts.
Cherry Blossoms, Kanazawa Ishikawa
Fly to Tokyo and start your trip exploring this fascinating city of bustling squares such as Shinjuku, flashing neon, high-rise department stores and top class hotels. Travel to Hakone National Park for a chance to experience Japan’s picturesque countryside before continuing your stay at the cultural capital of Kyoto. Next stop is Ishikawa, on the coast close to the Japanese Alps before returning to Tokyo for your flight home.
HOKKAIDO Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s four main islands, makes up one-fifth of the country’s land mass: only 5% of the population lives on the island due to the harsh Siberian cold that descends from November to March. However, winter is probably the peak tourist season when tourists come to enjoy the many activities including the ice sculptures at the Yuki Matsuri and the snow festival in early February.
To experience the essence of ancient Japanese culture, a stay at a Ryokan or Japanese inn is highly recommended. Its origins can be traced back to the Nara Period (AD 710 – 784) as free rest houses for travelers. Today, there are ryokans of varying characteristics where one can appreciate the tradition of hospitality. Guest rooms are usually simply decorated with a low table where a seasonal set dinner is normally served and tatami straw mats on which futon bedding is laid out.
The Ainu is the island’s indigenous culture and there are excellent museums dedicated to the Ainu in Sapporo and Hakodate. Hokkaido is blessed with spectacular natural scenery including Daisetsu-zan National Park, the caldera lakes of Shikotsu-Toya and the Kushiro Wetland National Park, where the red crested crane, one of Japan’s national symbols, spends its winters. The island’s largest city, Sapporo is an excellent base from which to explore the highlights of Hokkaido and is well connected to Tokyo and other major cities by air.
MOUNT KOYA
The ryokans featured below have been selected for their particular history, setting or facilities. Should you wish to stay in a different ryokan or a ryokan in another location, please ask for details.
Mount Koya is one of Japan’s holiest mountains located in Wakayama Prefecture. The journey to Mount Koya passes through a cedar-filled valley 2625 ft above sea level, surrounded by eight mountain peaks. In the early 9th century, the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi founded the first temple here and there are now more than 100 monasteries surrounding the head temple of Kongobuji. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this monastic complex offers a retreat away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo and other major cities.
Okunoin Cemetery, Koyasan
Although you could visit Mount Koya as a day trip from Osaka or Kyoto, it is recommended that you stay overnight in a mountain-top Buddhist temple set in tranquil woodland on the pretty Kii peninsula. During high season, more than a million visitors come to the mountain; staying overnight allows you to rise early and avoid the crowds, enjoy fresh vegetarian food, see the monks at worship and attend morning prayers.

TAWARAYA RYOKAN, KYOTO
GORA KADAN, HAKONE NATIONAL PARK
LAMP NO YADO, ISHIKAWA
The Tawaraya Ryokan is Kyoto’s oldest traditional inn and ideally located for exploring its sights. The impressive guest book includes Marlon Brando, Alfred Hitchcock and Leonard Bernstein. Rooms are appointed with ikebana flower arrangements and antiques. Guests can sample Japanese tea, followed by an elaborate kaiseki dinner, use the natural onsen or perhaps visit the inn’s library through the unforgettable dwarf-sized door.
Gora Kadan, a member of the Relais & Chateaux Collection, is located in the heart of the FujiHakone National Park, an area well known for its natural hot springs. It is a traditional Japanese ryokan designed to blend in with the nearby mountains, combining Japanese tradition and impeccable service with modern elements. There are two wells from which mineral rich, hot spring water flows and feeds the open-air baths.
Lamp No Yado is a traditional Ryokan located at Yoshigawara Onsen on the tip of the Noto Peninsular in Ishikawa Prefecture. Started in 1790, its name is derived from the fact that it had no electricity and only oil lamps for lighting. The ryokan combines strong traditional architecture with modern luxury. There is a separate onsen for men and women and a swimming pool with panoramic views of the ocean.

Mount Tateyama Volcanic Geyser
Located in Nagano Prefecture, the Japanese Alps features some of Japan’s most dramatic scenery and picturesque rural villages. The main hubs of the region are Takayama and Matsumoto, home to the famous “Black Crow” Castle, which can be easily reached by bullet train from Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Hiking is one of the most popular ways to enjoy the beauty of the Japanese Alps, with walking trails available for all levels of experience and fitness. In addition to the mountains, the area is famous for its many onsen or hot spring resorts, the most famous of which is the Jigokudani Onsen, “Hell Valley Hot Springs”, in Yudanaka where one can observe wild monkeys gathering to bathe in the natural hot spring pools. During the winter months, as many as 200 animated simian come to enjoy the hot springs and they even have their own onsen. Travel in Asia & The Pacific At Cox & Kings we believe that a good travel experience is not luck but judgment. We have compiled the following advice to outline the nature of travel in Asia & The Pacific and to help you prepare for your trip. Even with the most meticulous planning, however, minor problems can occur and, while our local representatives are always on hand to rectify such occurrences, we do request that you have a patient and broadminded approach to traveling in Asia & the Pacific. FLIGHTS Internal Flights / Delays / Insurance: Almost all the internal flights in this brochure use jet airliners, with some internal airlines in Southeast Asia using turboprop aircraft. Because of increased air traffic, government restrictions and changing weather conditions, flight delays have become more commonplace. These delays can cause problems with your travel arrangements, and additional costs may well be involved. This may be in the form of added accommodation costs, transfers and/or onward tickets. If this should occur, everything possible will be done to minimize the inconvenience. Cox & Kings will endeavor to ensure that arrangements go as smoothly as possible. As services are paid for in advance, any services missed due to delays and/ or schedule changes are non-refundable. Please also bear in mind that many international flight tickets are non-changeable and non-refundable. The insurance policy offered by Cox & Kings is designed to mitigate the costs and effects of such delays in certain circumstances, and we strongly advise that you purchase insurance against such eventualities.
Join us on a journey of discovery in the heart of Central Vietnam, Banyan Tree Lang Cô.
Airport Departure Taxes: The cost of our tours does not always include airport departure taxes or overland departure taxes; it is necessary for you to pay these locally and in local currency. Please ensure that you retain enough local currency to cover these taxes. Departure taxes vary in each country and you will be advised when possible of the rates before your departure from the U.S.A. These taxes are always subject to change, and if they do so when you are traveling, your guide or our ground handler will advise you.
ROAD TRAVEL The majority of the roads to and from major tourist destinations are paved and in reasonable condition. Although many of the city roads are now 4 to 6-lane highways and have had a large amount of investment in recent years, many of the narrower ones and smaller highways are bumpy and pot-holed. In Vietnam and Cambodia, many of the roads are in poor condition, but most of the main highways are paved. For longer journeys, we will nearly always advise you to fly. Types of vehicles vary according to the country visited and the numbers on a tour. Generally, the following can be used as a guideline for the size of transportation provided: 1-3 passengers, sedan car; 4-6 passengers, minivan; 6-19 passengers, small bus; 20-28 passengers, medium bus. EARLY STARTS A number of flights within Asia & The Pacific arrive/depart early in the morning and, while we will endeavor to schedule your tour with a flight which arrives/departs at a reasonable time, sometimes there is little or no alternative and early check-in/check-out times may be required. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation standards vary dramatically throughout Asia & The Pacific; however, in most of the major cities the hotels are of a good standard. Standards will vary much more in some of the smaller cities and rural areas. For our tours in Asia & The Pacific, we have chosen hotels primarily for their location and the facilities available. We will endeavor to supply any extra information that you may require about these hotels. The hotels listed in the tour itineraries may occasionally be unavailable for the required dates. In this event, we will advise you of the alternative hotels, which will, where possible, be of the same or of a higher standard than those featured in the itineraries. There are many new hotels being built in Asia & The Pacific, and we may upgrade those featured in the brochure if better options in the same category become available. In Mongolia we use traditional tents or “gers”. Please note all rooms reserved on your tour are standard, unless noted otherwise; however, if you wish to upgrade your room (e.g., to a lake
view or suite, etc.), please speak to your tour consultant who will be able to advise you about options and applicable supplements. Check-in & Check-out Times: For all group and individual tours, hotel check-in time is normally 14:00 and check-out time is normally 12:00, but this does vary between hotels. Early checkins and late check-outs cannot be pre-booked without extra payment. EXTENSIONS Cox & Kings is happy to arrange for you to extend your stay in Asia & The Pacific. We have suggested possible extension options for the tours in this brochure, however we would also be delighted to design a custom extension, either pre or post tour, to fit in with your particular interests. Please note that tour extensions are operated on the same basis as Private Journeys. WALKING Visiting many of the sites in Asia require a reasonable amount of walking, either to the site or around it. While the walking is normally easy going, a full-day’s sightseeing can be quite tiring and sometimes strenuous. In addition, at ancient monuments there are many steep sections and uneven surfaces. A reasonable amount of fitness is required. CRUISES Cruise boats may vary their itineraries with little or no notice if water levels become unusually low, or to avoid areas of dense traffic. Such changes are generally very rare, but you should check the final itinerary at reception when you embark. Cruise itineraries include full board, but all drinks will be charged as extras. MEALS Meals included in the tour program are indicated in the itineraries at the end of each day with codes: Breakfast (B), Lunch (L) and Dinner (D). MAPS Type of travel is indicated in the maps at the beginning of each itinerary with symbols: Surface Travel ( ), Air Travel ( ), Train Travel ( ), Cruise Travel ( ).

Asia & The Pacific Fact File LAOS Capital: Vientiane Population: 6.3 million Currency: The Kip (LAK) Official Language(s): Lao, French Surrounded by Cambodia, China, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, Laos covers an area roughly the size of Great Britain, much of which is dominated by mountains and rivers. For many years Laos has been over-shadowed by its more lively neighbors, causing much of it to remain undeveloped. What To See No trip to Laos would be complete without a stay in the peaceful town of Luang Prabang. Best known for its high concentration of Buddhist temples and serene location on the banks of Mekong, Luang Prabang was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. Of Laos’ many rivers, certainly the most notable is the Mekong. It runs from the northwest to the most southern tip of Laos, forming a natural border with Thailand. You could spend several days cruising the river, providing a great opportunity to see some of the more remote areas of the country, which are often inaccessible by road. UZBEKISTAN Capital: Tashkent Population: 28 million Currency: Uzbekistani Soum Official Language(s): Uzbek Uzbekistan is the very center of ex-Soviet Central Asia. A landlocked country, it is a blend of desert, steppe, oasis and river valley. Architecturally and culturally rich, Uzbekistan is endowed with some of the most audacious buildings in the Islamic world and has Central Asia’s most brilliant cities: Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva. What To See The capital of Tashkent is the biggest and one of the oldest cities in Central Asia with a history of 2200 years. The city preserves only a small proportion of its architectural past. A massive earthquake in 1966 flattened much of the old city and it was rebuilt with broad, tree-lined streets. Of interest among the older buildings are the 16th-century Kukeldash Madrasa, and the KaffaliShash Mausoleum. Tashkent also houses many museums of Uzbek and pre-Uzbek culture.
To the south of Tashkent is Samarkand, transformed by Amir Timur (better known at Tamerlane in the West) in the 14th- century into one of the world’s greatest capitals. The center of the historical town is the Registan Square, where three huge madrassas — including Shir-Dor and Tillya-Kari — built between the 15th and 17th centuries, dominate the area. The Bibi Khanym Mosque, not far from the Registan, is testimony to Timur’s love for his wife. The Shah-i-Zinda is a collection of the graves of some of Samarkand’s dignitaries. Other sites of interest include the Observatory of Ulug Beg, which was the most advanced astronomical observatory of its day. West of Samarkand is Bukhara, which was once a center of learning renowned throughout the Islamic world. The focus of historical Bukhara is the Shakristan, which contains the Ark, or palace complex of the Emirs. Other sites of interest include the Kalyan Mosque, which is open to non-Muslims, the Ulug Beg Madrasa and the Abdul Aziz Madrasa. Explore Khiva, northeast of Bukhara, near the modern city of Urgench. Khiva is younger and better preserved than either Samarkand or Bukhara. The city still lies within the original city walls, and has changed little since the 18th- century. The Fergana Valley lies in the eastern part of Uzbekistan between the Tien Shan Mountains and the Pamir Alay ranges. Fergana, the largest town in the valley, makes a good base from which to see the older towns of Kokand and Margilan. See the natural silk production at the Yodgorlik Silk factory at Margilan or the fascinating bazaar and beautiful Khonakhah Mosque. When To Go Spring (April to June) as well as autumn (September to November) is the best times to travel. VIETNAM Capital: Hanoi Population: 86.9 million Currency: Dông (VND) Official Language(s): Vietnamese Vietnam is a colorful and diverse country from the wild mountainous north with its myriad of
ethnic communities to the steamy city of Saigon on the edge of the Mekong Delta. The charming capital Hanoi is a fascinating mix of fading colonial buildings and national monuments, and the spellbinding scenery of Halong Bay is now a World Heritage Site. Hue offers an insight into the Imperial days, while the charming riverside port of Hoi An has an intriguing blend of Japanese, Chinese and European influences. What To See Halong Bay: Situated in the North-East region of Vietnam, Halong Bay is a bay in the Gulf of Tonkin comprising the regions of Halong City, the township of Cam Pha, and a part of the island district of Van Don. Halong Bay borders Cat Ba Island in the southwest, the East Sea in the east, and the mainland, creating a 75 mile coastline. Halong Bay is made up of 1,969 islands of various sizes, 989 of which have been given names. There are two kinds of islands, limestone and schist, which are concentrated in two main zones: the southeast (belonging to Bai Tu Long Bay), and the southwest (belonging to Halong Bay). This densely concentrated zone of stone islands, world famous for its spectacular scenery of grottoes and caves, forms the central zone of Halong Bay, which has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Mekong Delta is Vietnam’s “rice bowl” a fertile region of flat farmland interlaced with thousands of waterways and tributaries of the Mekong, known locally as Cuu Long, the river of Nine Dragons. The Delta’s waters are interspersed with rice fields, colorful floating markets and isolated villages accessible only by boat. Annexed by Cambodia by the invading Vietnamese in the 17th- century, the region remains home to descendants of the former Khmer Empire, and the region is scattered with a working collection of temples and resident Buddhists that continue to use Khmer as their mother tongue. When To Go Vietnam’s temperatures and rainfall vary widely. However, the best overall months are probably October to March. The rainy season for most of the country is between May and September.

MALAYSIA & BORNEO Malaysia is hot and humid year round, with differing rainfall patterns. The east coast of peninsula Malaysia experiences rainfall from November to January. The west coast experiences more rainfall from August to October. Short, sharp downpours throughout the year with the rest of the day fairly clear. Borneo has a tropical climate, as predominantly covered in rainforest. Heavy rains between November and February make travel more difficult as roads and walking trails become muddy. The weather is most pleasant between May and October, during the fruiting season when there is more wildlife activity. In recent years, smoke haze caused by agricultural fires has been known to affect air quality for a few weeks in September, although measures have been taken by the authorities.
