Explore

Northern Queensland The main attraction of Northern Queensland is undoubtedly the Great Barrier Reef, but the region is full of rich and diverse wonders that each deserve their own recognition. As the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, the city of Cairns features an eclectic combination of tropical outdoor living, cosmopolitan sophistication and easy access to adventure. A destination in itself, the Esplanade in the center of Cairns offers the best of typical Australian dining, shopping and exploring. The city’s diverse choice of accommodation serves as the perfect base for other popular attractions, including the scenic Kuranda Railway and Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Also a short drive from the Cairns Airport is Palm Cove, offering a decidedly more relaxed atmosphere than its neighbor to the south. Immaculate palm-lined beaches play host to an array of accommodations that highlight a more rustically elegant environment, while still in easy reach of all the attractions of Northern Queensland. Continuing a bit further to the north, Port Douglas is a combination of funky style and sophistication, where the rainforest meets a stunning azure sea. The port

attracts everyone, from families to singles and celebrities who revel in the town’s luxurious yet laid back lifestyle, while appreciating the proximity to all of the regions attractions. Even further north, the Daintree Rainforest is Australia’s equivalent of the Amazon, home to the highest number of rare or endangered plant and animal species in the world. This is a place to enjoy both nature and adventure—often simultaneously—by viewing saltwater crocodiles via a river or 4WD excursion. Although farther from civilization, there is ample opportunity to experience this area in comfort at a luxury retreat or rainforest lodge. Venture to the tip of the Daintree and you will end up at Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. First discovered by Captain Cook when his ship ran aground, this area is a paradise of unique ecotourism.

Uncover the

Great Barrier Reef Islands The Great Barrier Reef is one of the primary reasons that Australia is such a popular destination with travelers from around the world, and no voyage Down Under is truly complete without a visit to the reef. Recognized as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, the reef extends more than 1,200 miles and encompasses over 200,000 square miles off the coast of Queensland. Powdery white sand beaches beckon on the northern islands such as Lizard Island and the famous Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsunday chain. Further south, Heron Island continues this trend of delighting naturalists, adventurers, divers and sun worshipers.

The Great Barrier Reef Islands are also host to a variety of idyllic resorts to suit every taste. From comfortable bungalows set within lush forest and gardens, to exclusive and spacious villas perfectly situated on coral-fringed beaches. From the modest to the ultra-luxe experience, our favorite hotels and resorts along the Great Barrier Reef ensure that everyone can find their own paradise somewhere on these islands.

Below the surface, the colorful and intricately shaped coral formations of the Reef provide a mesmerizing backdrop from which to view the multitude of undersea wildlife. There are hundreds of species to witness, including playful clownfish, proud angelfish, sea turtles, dolphins, giant grouper and seahorses that will leave visitors fascinated beyond expectation. Reef excursions range from half-day snorkeling trips to multi-day live-aboard dive programs, ensuring an option for everyone from the first-timer to the veteran diver.

Western Australia is known for many things, but perhaps one of the most adventurous and thrilling Western Australian experiences is jumping in the ocean and snorkeling with Whale Sharks. World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef is one of the very few places on Earth where you can interact with these gigantic creatures. Whale sharks are the world’s largest fish, and this is felt as you swim up close to these graceful creatures. Encounters with these gentle giants are truly awesome, and are humbling experiences. Around the world, whale sharks are rarely known to swim close to shores or within shallower reefs, however, Ningaloo Reef is an exception, as every year between March and July, Whale sharks roam along the shores chasing plankton and krill. If diving with these gentle giants is not on your bucket list, it should be.

Indulge in

South Australia Wine, wildlife and opals could serve as a succinct description of South Australia, but this amazing region has earned more superlatives than that from all who have come to visit. Serving as the state’s gateway, the capital city of Adelaide is an elegant statement of Australian expression. Known as the “Festival City,” it is home to over 400 events each year and serves as the jumping off point for the renowned wine regions of South Australia as well as other attractions of natural wonder.

Discovered in 1913, the opal fields of Coober Pedy to the north of Adelaide produce most of the world’s opals, while more than half of its 4,000 residents actually live underground to escape the heat that presses down on this quirky outback region. In addition to shopping for opals in over 30 gem stores, visitors also marvel at Cooper Pedy’s underground church, underground hotels and a golf course featuring not a blade of grass.

The Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale have become two of the premier winemaking locales in the world, boasting some of the finest labels to be found. Visitors to the Barossa often enjoy day trips spent cycling through the valleys of vineyards, sampling fine wines and gourmet artisanal foods along the way. By contrast, McLaren Vale is situated just a 45 minute drive from Adelaide, and in addition to its strong tradition of wines, it is situated on the Fleurieu Peninsula where visitors enjoy the lovely beaches, fishing, diving, boating as well as whale watching and penguin viewing. Only a 30-minute flight from Adelaide, the pristine Kangaroo Island is home to an abundance of wildlife that can be viewed up close in its native habitat. From koalas to cockatoos and sea lions to penguins, nowhere else can one see such a variety of nature in a completely unspoiled setting.

Wander Through

Victoria The state of Victoria can truly be said to offer something for everyone. A trip along the Great Ocean Road offers some of the most majestic coastal scenery to be found anywhere, while winemaking also proves to be a top attraction in places such as the Yarra Valley. But perhaps Victoria’s top attraction is the simultaneously eclectic and cosmopolitan city of Melbourne. As Australia’s second largest city after Sydney, Melbourne may well be considered Australia’s capital of sport, fashion and the arts. While serving as home to the famous Melbourne Cup horse race, the Australian Open tennis championship and the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, the city that is passionate about her sport also has an artistic charm that can be found by wandering the famous narrow laneways or by dining at one of many refined or contemporary eateries. A short trip to Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula is rewarded with magnificent coastal views, luxurious European-style country retreats and a plethora of activities; from a variety of water sports and golfing options, to wine tasting, antiquing

52

and wandering lively markets and grand gardens. There’s no shortage of nature in Victoria either, as demonstrated at places like Phillip Island. Just a few hours’ drive from Melbourne, is home to over 5,000 fur seals, the Koala Conservation Centre as well as the daily “Penguin Parade” of tiny little penguins returning from the sea at dusk. Wildlife flourishes along the outskirts of Melbourne. Spend the day exploring the Aussie bush on foot and try your hand at spotting koalas lazing about. To complete your Australian animal checklist, spend an afternoon tracking Kangaroo mobs that hop freely in many of the wildlife reserves. Just 67 miles northwest of Melbourne lies Victoria’s spa country, where visitors flock to places like Daylesford and Hepburn Springs seeking soothing spa treatments to reinvigorate both body and soul. Here one will find luxury accommodations set amidst the mineral springs, and visitors can explore craft and antique shops or a variety of more active pursuits.

Discover

Tasmania Tasmania is Australia’s southeastern island-state with a culture and atmosphere all its own. In the city of Hobart, colorful penal colonies have given way to colorful markets— such as the famous Salamanca Market—as well as charming colonial cottages that line narrow streets, all set against the dramatic backdrop of the 4,000 ft. high Mount Wellington. Not to be missed is the historic penal colony of Port Arthur, featuring grand architecture amongst its convict-built walls, and where one also finds enchanting gardens and a chilling history to explore.

Considered the jewel of Tasmania’s wilderness, Cradle Mountain is a veritable mecca for bushwalkers who discover deep gorges, wild moorlands and pristine lakes carved out by glaciers some 20,000 years ago. For a glimpse into a lifestyle reminiscent of frontier years gone by, the 750 residents of Strahan will welcome you with open arms to their charming fishing village on Tasmania’s west coast. Their colonial architecture is both unique and welcoming, and serves as the gateway for cruises up the gentle Gordon River.

Situated on the east coast of Tasmania is the scenic Freycinet Peninsula, featuring spectacular pink granite cliffs and the breathtaking Wineglass Bay within the Freycinet National Park. Venturing on to the northern edge of Tasmania, one discovers the fascinating and quaint city of Launceston, filled with Victorian and Edwardian architecture and surrounded by beautiful countryside.
