Plaza Premium Lounge Redefining Your Journeys

T

o most travellers, the destination is the most important part of the journey. But for the discerning few, it is the journey that matters. It’s about enjoying the experience all throughout, from flight check-ins to preboarding, onboard the flight and all the way to your arrival. The airport experience is a significant part of the journey, and one that is hugely disregarded. The question is, why spoil yourself only when you get there, when you can start getting pampered here? This is where Plaza Premium Lounge steps in. Plaza Premium Lounge is your sanctuary in the bustling airport, with a variety of premium services allowing you to relax while enjoying first-class amenities during transit. From being the world’s first pay-in concept lounge, it has now expanded to provide service excellence in 65 locations in 18 international airports. The Plaza Premium brand also branched out to other services to include beauty salons and organic spas, fine dining restaurants and bars, airport meet and greet services as well as serviced offices and meeting facilities, all with a unified goal of providing quality service to travellers.

You can now sit back and relax while in transit, as Plaza Premium airport lounges will make sure all your needs are met. Enjoy refreshing showers in spacious shower facilities with full amenities, indulge in all-day buffets featuring authentic local specialties in the dining room, unwind and catch up on some much-needed rest in the private resting area, get full pampering from head to toe with the spa services and work in comfort and convenience at the fully equipped business centre. The services are comprehensive, ingenious and impeccable. This brand of excellence is what makes Plaza Premium truly unique and one-of-a-kind. Behind the excellence of Plaza Premium Lounge is CEO and founder Mr. Song Hoi See, a man with a passion for quality service, and who continuously works to find new ways for improvement. “You need a conducive environment, a quiet place to work regardless of what airline you travel. My initial idea for this lounge was to basically take care of the people who are not entitled to have lounge service supposedly given by the airlines. If you need a place to read, to rest, to take a shower, to catch up with your needs, this is your oasis. This is called lifestyle.” You seek for outstanding service, Plaza Premium Lounge provides it. Now you can relax, unwind and enjoy wellappointed luxuries even before you get to your destination.

Arts & design | winston art group

from contemporary to extraordinary Art Consultant and Curator Jessica Hodin shares the highs of the skyrocketing Contemporary Art market.

T

he spring 2012 auctions of Contemporary Art demonstrated the sector’s incredible resilience. In New York alone, the May Post-War and Contemporary sales at the major auction houses fetched approximately USD 1.4bn compared to last years’ total sales of approximately USD 1.8bn. Record auction prices were generated for several living artists. Furthermore, the May 2012 Impressionist and Modern sales realised a combined total of USD 520m, compared to last year’s USD 350m.

Over the past several years, and even through the economic recession of 2008, the art market has been strongest at the top end and softer in the middle. However, the recent sales have shown that strength is coming back into the middle market, with pieces ranging from USD 10,000 to USD 500,000 from artists that might be considered as “good investments”. Opportunities for short-term growth increase when clients buy what they love, and rely on independent advisors to ensure quality, condition, provenance, title and fair price.

These new records demonstrate the wide appeal for major paintings and sculptures throughout the international collecting community. The New York Times’ Carol Vogel surmised that both the Christie’s and Sotheby’s Contemporary sales demonstrated how “…collectors from all over the world continue to be drawn to parking their cash in art they can enjoy, particularly when it is universally recognizable.” Recent sales of Mark Rothko’s “Orange, Red, Yellow”, Roy Lichtenstein’s “Sleeping Girl”, and Yves Klein’s “FC1 (Fire Color 1)” all achieved record prices for the artists at auction, with Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” setting the record for highest price ever achieved at auction after taking in a colossal USD 119m.

Although investment potential should be analysed in the longterm, there are always exceptions in the marketplace. Nobody could have predicted that 26-year-old artist Jacob Kassay’s prices would raise from USD 4,000 (retail) to USD 290,000 (auction including premium) in just two to three years’ time! People liked his work, something clicked, and generally, if a critical mass of people develops taste for a certain artist, their value will rise.

The London art market consultancy firm, ArtTactic, released a report on New York’s May Contemporary Art sales saying that the market is now only five per cent below its peak in May 2008 and that the average auction price during these sales of USD 4,559,676 is 24 per cent higher than the same peak in the market in 2008. 30 | TRAVELITE

The popularisation of Art Fairs is a factor in the increased global visibility for certain artists and helps catapult their work to astronomical levels. The London fair Frieze came to New York in May 2012 for their inaugural US fair, bringing a tightly edited selection of the best art from around the world. Art fairs have exploded everywhere including the Middle East, Latin America, and Russia. This phenomenon, in addition to the proliferation of online venues for art sales, ensures that any work of art is available to a global audience.

Art prices have increased at a much faster rate than the global GDP in the past few years because collectibles and luxury goods are part of the Ultra High Net Worth economy which is booming at a faster rate. The Art Index has more than doubled, surpassing the increase in the indices for equities and bond markets and begging the question of whether the art market’s outperformance of equities, stocks, and bonds is sustainable. Demand in the international art market has been driven by increasing wealth in emerging markets, especially that of the Far East. Chinese purchasing influence has been particularly notable in certain categories of collectibles, namely investment-worthy wine, watches, and Chinese works of art. The major auction houses’ Hong Kong branches are tapping into the new wealth and burgeoning market of new buyers.

In 2011, Sotheby’s sales exceeded USD 1bn and the sales at Christie’s Hong Kong totaled USD 836m compared to a cool USD 98m back in 2003. The new generation of avid Chinese collectors signifies that there is immense promise in Asia, both on the buying side and on the production side. Asian artists still command strong prices in Asia, Europe and America and Chinese contemporary artists have proven themselves to be more of just a passing fad. In fact, China’s most famous living artist, Ai Wei Wei, broke his own high auction record of USD 657,000 this past May when his “Sunflower Seeds” sold for USD 782,500. In addition to the hot contemporary art, “Chinese buyers are strongly bidding on and repatriating 18th, 19th, and 20th century porcelain, jade, and other Chinese objects,” says Elizabeth von Habsburg, Managing Director at Winston Art Group. “We recently sold a group of Chinese 19th and 20th century antique jades and porcelain on behalf of an estate estimated between USD 80,000 and USD 120,000 for over USD 1m, due to strong Asian buying.” The Chinese art and antiquities auction sector is the strongest growing market worldwide with dramatic rise of 177 per cent in 2010 and a further 64 per cent in 2011. Not only are art collectors following traditional motivations of buying as ways to demonstrate culture, taste, and prosperity, but some are also using their artwork to provide liquidity in a restricted capital market. More and more collectors are borrowing money against their art; some studies suggest that USD 7bn is currently being lent against art in the United States alone. Art is a valuable investment, however, it requires a curatorial attention. Collectors must be aware of maintenance issues, risk management in terms of insurance, tax considerations, and as with any other asset, legal ramifications in terms of title and export licenses. For all of these reasons, it is important for collectors to get appraisals and proper advice from independent advisors. TRAVELITE | 31

Investment Opportunities: China & Beyond

T

here has long been a close connection between travel and investment opportunity. The early explorers sought wealth through the establishment of trade routes. When Zhang Qian’s imperial envoy set out to discover the world beyond China in the 2nd century BCE, little did he know that he was opening up the world of transcontinental trade to China for centuries to come. Those routes laid the foundations for China’s dominance in world trade today. Through economic reform, China has transformed from a small developing nation to an influential global economic powerhouse. The pace of this transformation has been nothing short of astonishing as evidenced by its ever-changing landscape. While one can pour through economic data from afar, all it takes is landing at Shanghai Pudong International Airport or taking the highspeed train between Beijing to Tianjin to get a sense of the extraordinary development, which has already occurred. Many of the world’s best investment managers will tell you that it is often their travels that give them the best sense of the investment opportunities on the ground, the sentiment of the local investors and what is driving the local economy. Nevertheless, does confidence in the long-term sustainability of Chinese economic growth limit you to investments in China alone? Not necessarily. It is important to look beyond China to fully capture the opportunity in your portfolio.

32 | TRAVELITE

Over the years, despite the Chinese government’s rigorous control on investments into the China market, investors around the world enthusiastically look for ways to invest. While investing directly into China may be rewarding, one has to remember that with the interconnectedness of the world today, there are so many more ways to gain exposure. The largest US companies are finding more and more of their growth in earnings derived from abroad and particularly from China.

The Consumer China has experienced an unprecedented phase of industrialisation and economic development that has created immense demand for infrastructure, housing and industrialisation development, which has led to the rise of the middle class and increasing domestic consumption. Chinese consumer spending is the key to the next decade of growth. According to a research report by McKinsey & Company, by 2020, real consumption will have doubled to USD 4.8 trillion and China will be the world’s second-biggest consumer market after the US.1 More importantly, while China has achieved astonishing growth, it also created structural imbalances, which is becoming a threat to its longterm economic development. Looking ahead, the Chinese government recognised the need to shift away from growth that is export-driven to one fueled by consumption. This is no easy task, but the government has embarked on a series of measures to boost household income and consumption and will likely to continue focusing on this area. Measures have ranged from providing subsidies for white goods to raising the minimum wage level. Clearly, the key beneficiaries from such policy changes are none other than companies selling products to the Chinese consumers. As you walk the streets of China, you will quickly notice the proliferation of both domestic and global brands, from the ultra-luxury European brands to local fast food chains, shoe shops, shopping malls and etc. These companies have ambitious long-term expansion plans to tap into the China consumer market. In many cases, their future growth ambitions are dependent upon its success.

Commodities The commodities’ intensive nature of China’s urbanisation and industrialisation has created a positive terms-of-trade shock in commodity-exporting countries. In particular, commodities such as iron ore, copper, coal, aluminum, platinum and palladium, which are the central ingredients for their industrialisation and urbanisation. With this in mind, if you are a firm believer of China’s multi-year growth evolution, then commodities is an asset class you should not overlook. Under the same theme, we also see good opportunity investing in the companies within the commodity value chain. Australia, being one of the world’s largest commodity exporters, has undoubtedly benefited from China’s enormous commodity demand. Coal, which is used for power generation, is a great example of how China’s growth has had a positive impact on Australia. Despite having the world’s largest coal resource, China is a net coal importer because it is insatiable energy demand. As advanced economies remain weak, Australia continues to benefit from China’s urbanisation and industrialisation. Over half of the market capitalisation of Australian Securities Exchange (ASX)-listed companies is made up of companies that either produce commodities or provide support services to commodity exporters. These companies cover most aspects of the commodity value chain, and many are establishing or have established global leadership positions. Commodities currencies such as Australian Dollar (AUD), Brazil Real (BRL) and South African Rand (ZAR) are also driven by the strong demand for commodities. As we all know, commodities (currencies) are negatively correlated to the US dollar. On the back of high deficit levels and Federal Reserve Bank’s commitment to keep rates low, we believe that the US dollar is likely to depreciate over medium to long term. It would therefore be prudent to evaluate the need to include these currencies into your investment portfolios as part of a dollar diversification strategy.

Diversification is Key Clearly, China presents immense investment opportunities both directly and indirectly. For those who are firm believers of China’s multi-year growth opportunity, there is no lack of investment opportunities available. At J.P. Morgan, we believe that your hard earned wealth should be put to work even harder in a diversified portfolio throughout the globe and across all asset classes.

Investing in Chinese Equities: Dominant Brands – Bigger is Better For those looking to access the China market directly, bigger is better in times of uncertainty. China, like every economy, goes through cycles. Those cycles can be severe but the country has the means and the will to dig out of them. With the current uncertainty in global markets, small companies have to fight for their survival in a world where capital is seeking greater certainty of returns. The largest Chinese banks are systematically important; they will be defended in times of stress. The largest property developers will be able to attain funding as the smaller players either borrow at exorbitant rates or become distressed sellers. The largest mobile carriers will leverage their enormous and growing subscriber base to remain dominant. Long-term valuations and dividend yields support a prudent approach to Chinese equities. Those with a long-term view will likely be rewarded for buying household names during times of stress.

life-changing journeys Sarina Bratton, founder and Managing Director of Orion Expedition Cruises, shares the fulfillment of travelling to the world’s most remote destinations, reaching not only the isolated areas, but also hundreds of lives.

I

was very fortunate to travel quite a lot as a young elite diver, both domestically and internationally. I just love the opportunity to discover, learn and immerse myself in different cultures and to experience the wildlife found in different parts of the world. This has really helped me in appreciating what we have at home in Australia. Travelling has made me appreciate the delicate nature of the world far more and it made me realise the need for us to develop sustainable tourism products that do not impede, harm or detract from the beauty of the regions, its peoples and its wildlife. We do need to tread lightly and provide an enduring legacy for generations to come. A visit to the remote Kimberley area of Western Australia on a friend’s super yacht in 2003 was the catalyst for me in founding Orion Expedition Cruises. Some 600 nautical miles of the most pristine wilderness area to be found on this planet with no infrastructure to support operations became both my inspiration and challenge in this venture. I knew I needed a small, self-sufficient, luxury expedition vessel to share this great beauty with others. This is how Orion Expedition Cruises started. Orion is all about unique and meaningful experiences in remote destinations. Pioneering new itineraries in remote destinations requires a level of commitment in researching and scouting for resources that are uncommon in the mainstream cruise industry. I think it is a good outcome that the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) introduced new compliances, which restricts big ships from cruising remote

destinations. After all, as an industry, our ability to have control on environmental impact becomes challenged when large numbers of guests step foot ashore in any remote areas. Every leader of an organisation touching these areas must have a clear conscience about how they interact with the area, the wildlife and the enduring quality of the destination. When we cruise to the Antarctic Continent and the Ross Sea in particular, the window of operation is very narrow, and less than 300 people a year get to experience this remarkable destination. Orion is one of the few expedition cruise ships to navigate deep into this isolated area. Our capacity is exclusive to no more than 100 guests, giving us the opportunity to work with indigenous communities in inaccessible areas, in ways that many would not have thought possible. To pioneer cruises to such destinations entails management and minimisation of risk, which is why the ship’s technology and waste management systems are imperative to enable us to efficiently operate in these remote areas. The beauty of a small expedition ship is that we don’t have regimentation with our itineraries. The Captain and the Expedition Leader tailor the activities accordingly. If there is a pod of whales, we may choose to spend an hour or so with them, if there is a magnificent sunset, we may choose to remain at anchor and dine out on deck, if there is a break in the weather in Antarctica, we may get you ashore early in the morning to stand inside famous Antarctic explorers’ huts. Nowadays, it’s about creating opportunities for people to experience exotic cultures, flora and fauna

in difficult to access, and remote areas of Asia Pacific. Every time I read a comment card where someone expresses that their experience with Orion has been “life-changing”, I know that this is not an exaggeration, as I also have experienced these life-changing moments. In travel, one must have an open mind, an adventurous spirit and an inquisitive nature. I have been to many remote destinations including the Kuril Islands, north of Japan, the sub-Antarctic islands of Australia and New Zealand, plus many isolated communities within Papua New Guinea. Less than 500 people a year get to visit most of these places. The highlight of my trip to Papua New Guinea was establishing a meaningful relationship with a very remote community located close to the Sepik River. There are no roads leading to this village with a population of 300, therefore, any form of outside communication or assistance is rare. To experience their ancient and primitive culture, which remains intact today, is remarkable. I actually found it very humbling. They had “nothing” in what we consider “nothing” in our tech savvy and overindulged world. What they have is a strong pride in their community, their family, and their support for each other. They were

fit, healthy and so incredibly welcoming. We have established a wonderful philanthropic relationship with this community, and we have attempted to improve their everyday life, without compromising their cultural values. We have provided mosquito nets to all the homes, medication for malaria, and treatment for any ill villagers and we built a new schoolhouse after a cyclone destroyed the original. The cultural performance our guests experienced, the welcome into their individual homes, the opportunity to purchase quality Sepik River carvings, and the knowledge that our visit imparted to this community make for a very uplifting and rewarding experience. Next on my list are the Olympics in London, followed by two weeks in South Africa visiting two exclusive game reserves in Sabi Sands and Kruger National Park, a great white shark dive and a few games of golf along the Garden Route. And it doesn’t stop there. I still have a handful of destinations in my bucket list. I consider the subAntarctic islands of Australia and New Zealand akin to the Galapagos Islands. But this view is formed from what people have told me, and from what I have read. So, one day, in the not too distant future, I must go to the Galapagos Islands. TRAVELITE | 37

When did your fascination with travel begin and what drives you to continue exploring? I’ve always lived under a flight path! I was born at the end of England’s Gatwick Airport with the smell of jet fuel and the roar of planes taking off. I still have a childish excitement about getting on a plane and getting off 12 hours later on the other side of the world, looking forward to the many opportunities and adventures at hand. What’s the most remote destination you have been to? I recently travelled to North Western Myanmar, and over the years, I have been to some pretty remote parts of India and Indonesia. However, I think the concept of remoteness is relative to one’s age. So probably, the most remote travel I ever did was heading off as a 16-year old, backpacking all over Europe particularly to the Greek Islands with virtually no money in my pocket but with a head full of dreams. How has travelling changed the way you see the world? Travelling showed me that the world is truly a very, very small place.

It made me immensely proud to see them so excited and impressed seeing the 900 street children that we look after and educate to university level. Where do you plan to go next? I live on planes nowadays, and my next trips will take me to St. Tropez where we are buying a new resort, then I’m off to Goa, India for our annual staff party, followed by a quick business lunch in Doha, then I head to Marbella to look at some new opportunities and then I’m set to visit our resorts in Mykonos and Munich. The Ride of Luxury Inject some style and sophistication to your remote destination travels whether by land, sea or air. WORDS BY judd sta. maria

Super-sized SUV Glamping to rugged land? Try this vehicle on for size. The 2012 Land Rover Defender is a classy behemoth that improves upon its already exceptional 2007 version in terms of its on-road comfort as well as its now-legendary off-road ruggedness and versatility. Well regarded for its performance in the off-road since 1948, the Defender provides great comfort to the passengers inside while negotiating rough terrain outside. Testament to the versatility of this vehicle is the demand for it, which ranges from retail and utility customers to armed forces in more than a hundred countries. Perhaps the main reason for this universal appeal is the heavy customisation options afforded to the Defender’s clientele, who can match the specific purpose of the vehicle to its wheelbase (90, 110, or 130), body style (hard top, pick up, station wagon, chassis cab, or one of the ten other styles), interior and exterior styling, as well as its carrying, towing, and winching options. Additionally, there are two new option packs for the 2012 Defender: the Comfort Pack and the Off-Road Pack. The former includes air conditioning, a CD player with auxiliary input, electric windows, and remote central locking. The latter includes ABS, heavy-duty rims and MTR tyres, a tow ball, and an under-ride protection bar. Regardless of the configuration, a comfortable basic interior setup is present. The front seats are tall and designed to give maximum back support and head–

restraint ergonomics, both necessities in demanding driving conditions. The 110 Station Wagon and 130 Crew Cab models can accommodate three passengers on the second row seat; a third row option is also available for the former, accessed via the rear door or by folding the second row seats. These passenger rows can be folded to make room for large or awkward loads. Seat trims can be in all-vinyl and cloth specifications, but the half-leather option included in the XS specification available on the Station Wagon and 110 Double Cab Pick-Up models is the nicest way to go. The vehicle touts a new EU5 2.2-litre diesel engine to replace the old EU4 2.4-litre diesel but matches it in power, torque, and fuel consumption. Furthermore, this new engine helps Land Rover deliver the cleanest ever Defender with lower levels of NOx, CO, and HC emissions due to an improved combustion system, sophisticated engine management system, and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). For quieter driving, a new, full acoustic engine cover is in place to reduce engine noise. Performance is similar to the 2007 version, although the top speed has improved to 90mph compared to the previous 82mph mark. When you need to conquer rough terrain without sacrificing comfort, the 2012 Land Rover Defender gives you all you need and more. Style, comfort, function, and the cleanest ever Land Rover Defender all rolled into one is available starting from USD 55,500 on the road.

Ingenious Aircraft Taking it to the skies is ICON Aircraft’s light sport aircraft, the standard-setting A5. Created by an expert team of engineers and designers, the aircraft boasts ease of flying, great maneuverability, and impressive safety measures that tout a whole new experience way beyond mere transportation. No, it is not just about getting from here to there: the A5 aims to bring exhilaration back to flying, and Los Angeles-based ICON seems to have just pulled it off. ICON A5 takes advantage of the FAA’s Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) rule put into place in late 2004, which creates the new category for lightweight, simple, and easy-to-fly recreational aircrafts where the A5 is classified under. Intended to be safe, affordable, and more accessible than traditional transportation category aircrafts, the LSA category is complemented by the new Sport Pilot License (SPL), which can be achieved in half the time and cost of a traditional, transportation-focused Private Pilot License. This new aircraft category and the A5 pave the way for remote destination travel. ICON takes pride in the craft’s ability to takeoff and land almost anywhere. Airport? Optional. The A5 can be flown from grass, dirt, gravel, or other unimproved strips. Being a lightweight aircraft, it requires only a short runway surface between 500 to 1,000 feet to operate from. Part of the A5’s appeal is its portability, and it can optionally come with a customised trailer with a unique design that allows the craft to be loaded while on its landing gear from land, or loaded and unloaded on water at a boat ramp. 110 | TRAVELITE

It also incorporates a design that allows its wings to be folded, which, along with the trailer allows it to be easily transported and even stored at home, much like how you would store a standard water-ski or wakeboard boat. Moving the A5 on land and air is only about two thirds of the story, however. It is also amphibious, taking advantage of an additional boat hull design and its retractable landing gear to give its owner the utility of a comparable land LSA with the added freedom and fun of a seaplane. ICON’s philosophy is to be at the forefront of safety by means of an uncompromising safety standard at every design and production stage. The A5 was designed to be predictable and easy to fly with safety features that include the patent-pending Propeller Guard, an optional and quick-deploying Complete Airplane Parachute, and the new Spin-Resistant Airframe (SRA) technology for the passengers’ peace of mind. This exciting aircraft from ICON takes the dream of flight to new heights, and as personal flying becomes a more mainstream activity, so does the allure of owning your very own lightweight sports aircraft. The ICON A5 is available at a very compelling USD 139,000.

Designer Speedboat A passionate collaboration between Marc Newson, Riva and Officina Italiana Design has consummated into 22 limited edition units of a very stylish re-imagining of the Aquariva speedboat, made available through Gagosian Gallery. “As a kid obsessed with designing and making things, post-war Italian design was a huge source of inspiration. I was amazed by the seamless ability of designers and industry to produce every conceivable type of industrial product, from furniture to automobiles. My own career has undoubtedly been influenced by the Italians’ ability to impact so many areas of design,” says Marc Newson. “That influence is fully evident in ‘Aquariva by Marc Newson,’ my first nautical design project for the iconic Italian brand.” The Australian-born Newson’s undertaking puts his multidisciplinary design experience into outstanding use by using unique materials in the boat’s construction. A textile-based laminate (phenolic composite, a wood-like material, which is significantly durable was used for the deck area and instrument panel, giving the boat an ostensibly organic feel and aesthetic. In a beautiful contrast, anodised aluminum – a lightweight material not generally associated with boats – gives the boat a sleek, modern look. Keeping to Officina Italiana Design’s original plan for the Aquariva was important to Newson’s update, and with this in mind, he made truly innovative changes: the re-imagining of the transom, the wrap-around, laminated glass windscreen, the split cabin door entry, the functionality of the lounge and dining area, and the reintroduction of separate driver and passenger seats. Despite achieving all these improvements, Aquariva by Marc Newson does not go overboard and remains simple and functional, a fact that makes the boat truly extraordinary. The result is an update complete with a bow thruster and state-of-the-art electronic transmission. Aquariva by Marc Newson is a natural extension of the artist’s work with planes and automobiles. The result is a brilliant blend of form and function, looking back to La Dolce Vita of the 1950s and 1960s and forward to the latest trends in nautical design,” says Larry Gagosian of Gagosian Gallery. Indeed, through the designer’s aesthetic vision and uncompromising quality, he has won the highest international acclaim, including his appointment as a “Royal Designer for Industry” in the United Kingdom and numerous design awards and academic honors. There is much pride in this match made in heaven between Officina Italiana Design and Marc Newson, with the end product carrying on Aquariva’s legacy as a timeless classic, bridging the past and tradition to the present and innovation. The Aquariva by Marc Newson starts from USD 350,875. TRAVELITE | ??| 113 TRAVELITE
