Climate
The weather is a popular topic of conversaon in Japan, which comes as no surprise given the complexity of the climate in a country spanning 20 degrees of latude. Japan experiences four diverse seasons; Spring during March & May, Summer during June & August, Autumn during September & November and Winter during December and February.
Time differences
Japan is 1 hour behind Australian Eastern Standard Time, except during daylight savings me when there is a 2-hour difference.
See & Do
1
Kyoto’s Temples, Shrines & Gardens
With more than one thousand temples to choose from, you will be spoiled for choice in Kyoto. Enjoy finding your favourite.
2 Hiroshima & Miyajima
Passport & Visas
Australians need a current passport with at least six months validity from the date of entry. A visa is not required for Australian passport holders for a stay of up to 90 days. Non-Australian passport holders should check their visa requirements with the Japanese Consulate-General or their travel consultant.
Hiroshima's A-Bomb Dome is a striking symbol of the need for world peace. Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island is renowned for the Great Torii Gate which appears to float on the sea.
Electricity
As voltage in Japan is 100V, travellers are required to use adaptors to convert any appliances. 60Hz in the West, and 50Hz in the East, with a 2-pin flat plug.
3 Cherry Blossom & Autumn Leaves
Currency
The unit of Japanese currency is the Yen, with four bills, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000, plus coins of smaller denominaon, 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500. You can buy Yen at hotels, banks, and other authorized money exchanges, however it is recommended to change your money prior to travel.
Credit Cards
Credit cards and debit cards from major issuers are becoming increasingly accepted in major cies. However, towns in more remote areas will only accept cash payment.
Communicaons
Telephone / Fax: Full internaonal direct service. Country Code: 81
Dining / Drinking
Japan has a reputaon of being extremely expensive, but this does not have to be the case. If you are looking for a different dining experience, big name restaurants will have prices similar to Australia. A good rule of thumb is look for places which display a price or even a model of the food with the price outside, that way you know what to expect.
Footwear
When in a hotel room or entering a home, shoes are removed and exchanged for a pair of slippers; this is even more essenal in tradional Japanese style accommodaon, such as a Ryokan. If you can remember, try to face the shoes outwards.
The beauty of cherry blossoms and autumn leaves are a sight to behold and can be even more spectacular in the vicinity of a castle, temple or shrine. Hanami is the popular custom of having pares under cherry blossom trees.
4 Japanese Cuisine
Japan is a food lover's paradise. You could eat something different every night. A cooking class is popular way to learn about Japanese food. Explore alley ways with red lanterns and neon signs, called Yokocho alleys, and tradional casual eateries, called Izakayas.
Experience 5 Onsen & Ryokan 6 Cultural Experiences
7
A tradional Japanese Inn (Ryokan) offers much more than a place to sleep. Experience a hot spring bath (Onsen), a Kaiseki (mulcourse) dinner, and sleeping on a futon on the tatami mat floor. It is more comfortable than you might expect!
Ski & Snow Activities
Japan has excellent Skiing & Snow acvies in Winter with hundreds of operang resorts. Amongst these a dozen or so are parcularly large and popular amongst foreign skiers.
Bowing
The polite greeng in Japan is to “bow”. Bow from the waist and keep your arms straight by your side. Imitate the bows you receive – don’t over bow or ignore the greeng. Smile and nod if nothing else, you don't want to be seen as rude.
Language English:
Hello Thank you You're welcome Please Excuse me Where is… I want to go to… Goodbye
Japanese:
Konnichiwa Arigatou Douitashimashite Douzo Sumimasen …wa doko desu ka? …ni ikitai desu Sayounara
8
Try to see an arsc Geisha or Maiko Performance, or an athlec Sumo training session or tournament. Experience tradional Japanese culture through a tea ceremony, Kimono wearing and more.
Museums, Galleries & Theme Parks
Japan is home to a vast array of museums, galleries and theme parks. These cover history, geography, architecture, and both modern and tradional arts. Not to forget Tokyo Disney Resort® and Universal Studios Japan® .
9 Mt. Koya & Temple Stay 10 Festivals & Events A visit to the sacred Buddhist monasc complex of Mt. Koya is a journey into another world. A stay at a temple lodge (Shukubo), includes vegetarian food & parcipaon in morning Buddhist services.
Whether small or large, every Japanese fesval is fascinang! Especially popular summer fesvals are the 3 Great Tohoku Fesvals of Aomori Nebuta, Akita’ - Kanto and Sendai Tanabata in Northern Japan.

KINKAKUJI TEMPLE & RYOANJI TEMPLE
This shrine is an important Shinto shrine located on the mountain of Inari-san. It has thousands of vermilion Torii gates and many fox statues across the shrine grounds. Foxes are thought to be messengers of Inari, the god of rice harvest and more recently, business. The entire complex sprawls across the wooded forest of sacred Mount Inari. This ancient temple was first built in 798 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall in the wooded hills east of Kyoto and derives it’s name from the fall's pure waters. It is best known for it’s wooden stage that juts out from its main hall 13 meters above the hillside below.
KYOTO IMPERIAL PALACE & NIJO CASTLE
Kyoto Imperial Palace is renowned as a pinnacle for its simplicity of Japanese architecture. Nearby is the more lavishly appointed Nijo Castle, designated as a National Treasure, the walls and sliding paper doors of each room are decorated with spectacular screen paintings by the tea master and landscape architect Kobori Enshu.
Gion is the most famous entertainment and Geisha district which is a must-see! Old-style restaurants, shops and ochaya (where Geiko and Maiko entertain) add to the distinctly refined atmosphere. Try on a kimono and go explore the beauty of Kyoto's stone-paved streets with lanterns on both sides.
Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) with its top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf, is one of the most historical and representative building of Japan. Change in Prices and itineraries
These terms and conditions govern all bookings for Travel Japan by H.I.S. (“Travel Japan”) holiday packages. Please read them carefully as you will be bound by them.
Prices are based on tariffs and airfares current as at 29th Sep 2017. However may fluctuate due to exchange rates or increase to the cost element of the tour such as airfares, fuel, airport charges, hotelier rates and other service providers’ tariffs. In the event of such fluctuations or increases affecting the prices which we pay for transportation, accommodation and services generally, we reserve the right to adjust our prices as may be necessary at any time up to and including the day of departure of your tour, even though the balance payment may be made. If we are forced to change your booking or part of it for reasons beyond our control, for instance if an airline changes its timetable or if a hotelier overbooks his or her hotel accommodation, we reserve the right to vary your itinerary and will give you, or cause to be given to you, notice thereof, including any consequent change in price. In the event that any change or series of changes to your itinerary demonstrates that your tour has thereby become materially different from that contemplated prior to the change or changes being effected and in respect of which we have already accepted your deposit or balance payment, you have the right to ask for a rearrangement or to withdraw from the tour and monies already paid will be refunded less any charges levied by suppliers. It is essential you check with your Travel Agent whether any such changes have occurred in the tour you have chosen before you complete your booking. If, in the unlikely event that we have to cancel your booking because of insufficient numbers booked or because of events outside our control, we will, if we are able to, offer you an alternative tour of a similar standard. If you do not accept the alternative, we will refund in full any monies already paid.
