Climate
The weather is a popular topic of conversation in Japan, which comes as no surprise given the complicity of the climate in a country spanning 20 degrees of latitude. Japan experiences four diverse seasons; spring during March & May, summer during June & August, autumn during September & November and winter during December and February.
Time differences
Japan is 1 hour behind Australian Eastern Standard Time, except during daylight savings time when there is a 2-hour difference.
1
Kyoto’s Temples, Shrines & Gardens
With more than one thousand temples to choose from, you’re spoiled for choice in Kyoto. Spend your time finding one that suits.
2 Hiroshima & Miyajima
Passport & Visas
Australians need a current passport with at least six months validity from the date of entry, a visa is not required for Australian passport holders for stay up to 90 days. Non-Australian passport holders should check their visa requirements with the Japanese Consulate-General or their travel consultant.
The Atomic Bomb Dome is a historical place and a symbol of permanent world peace. The historical architecture of the Itsukushima Shrine is a mysterious shrine including the Great Torii Gate seemingly floating on the sea.
Electricity
As voltage in Japan is 100V, travellers are required to use adaptors to convert any appliances. 60Hz in the west, 50Hz in the east and Tokyo. Flat 2-pin plugs.
3 Ski & Snow Activities
Currency
Japan has excellent Skiing & Snow activities in winter with hundreds of operating resorts. Amongst these a dozen or so are particularly large and popular amongst foreign skiers.
The unit of Japanese currency is the YEN, with three bills, 1000, 5000 and 10000, plus coins of smaller denomination, 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500. You can buy YEN at hotels, banks, and other authorized money exchanges, however it is recommended to change your money prior to travel.
4
Credit Cards
Credit cards and debit cards of the major issuers are becoming increasingly accepted in the major cities, however towns in more remote areas will only accept cash payment.
Communications
Telephone / Fax: Full international direct service. Country Code: 81
5
Dining / Drinking
Japan has a reputation of being extremely expensive, and it can be, depending on where you are looking. If you are looking for a different dining experience, big named restaurants will have prices similar to Australia. A good rule of thumb is look for places which display a price or even a model of the food with the price outside, that way you know what you are in for.
Footwear
When in a hotel or similarly entering a home, shoes are removed and exchanged for a pair of slippers; this is even more particular in traditional Japanese style accommodation, such as a Ryokan. If you can remember try to face the shoes outwards.

Cherry Blossom & Autumn Leaves
Cherry blossoms and autumn leaves are a rare natural beauty occurring once a year and enhanced when viewed in the vicinity of a castle, temple & shrine. Hanami is popular, having parties under Cherry Blossom trees.
Japanese Cuisine
Japan is a food lover’s paradise. You could eat something different every night. ‘B-class gourmet" (simpler, more accessible, but no less delicious food) is now wildly popular such as ramen noodle, Udon Noodle, Okonomiyaki & more.
Bowing
The polite greeting in Japan is to “bow”. Bow from the waist and keep your arms straight by your side. Imitate the bows you receive – don’t over bow or ignore the greeting. Smile and nod if nothing else, you don’ t want to be seen as rude.
Shirakawa-go & Takayama
8 Onsen & Ryokan Experience A traditional Japanese Inn offers much more than a place to sleep. Experience an onsen hot springs, Japanese style Kaiseki dinner (multicourse meals), Tatami Floors, the Japanese lifestyle sleeping on a futon bed.

Mt. Koya & Temple Stay
The sacred Buddhist monastic complex of Mt. Koya makes you almost feel like you’re ascending to another world. Have a unique experience and stay at a temple lodge (shukubo), includes vegetarian food & participation in morning Buddhist services.

京都
KYOTO PLACES OF INTEREST IN KYOTO FUSHIMI INARI TAISHA GRAND SHRINE
GION
KIYOMIZUDERA TEMPLE
KINKAKUJI TEMPLE & RYOANJI TEMPLE
This shrine is an important Shinto shrine located on the mountain of Inari-san. It has thousands of vermilion Torii gates and many fox statues across the shrine grounds. Foxes are thought to be messengers of Inari, the god of the rice harvest and more recently, business. The entire complex sprawls across the wooded forest of sacred Mount Inari.
Gion is the most famous entertainment and Geisha district and a muse-see! Old-style restaurants, shops and ochaya (where Geiko and Maiko entertain) add to the distinctly refined atmosphere. Try on a kimono and go explore the beauty of Kyoto's stone-paved streets with lanterns on both sides.
This ancient temple was first built in 798 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall in the wooded hills east of Kyoto and derives its name from the fall's pure waters. It is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall 13 meters above the hillside below.
Kinkakuji temple (Golden Pavilion) whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf, is one of the historical buildings most representative of Japan. The facts regarding Ryoanji temple’s famous rock garden are less certain. Although there are fifteen rocks only 14 can be seen regardless of which angle the garden is viewed from.
ARASHIYAMA
IMPERIAL PALACE & NIJO CASTLE
Kyoto imperial Palace is renowned as a pinnacle for its simplicity of Japanese architecture. Nearby is the more lavishly appointed Nijo Castle, designated as a National Treasure, the walls and sliding paper doors of each room are decorated with spectacular screen paintings by the tea master and landscape architect Kobori Enshu.
Arashiyama is popular destination where nobles would enjoy its natural setting. The Togetsukyo Bridge is a central land mark of Arashiyama. Many small shops, restaurants and other attractions are found nearby. The bamboo groves is a magical place. The walking path that cuts through the bamboo gloves make for a nice walk or bicycle ride.

大阪
OSAKA
The Kansai region, situated in the central - west of Japan, includes the cities of Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and Nara which are famous for the rich cultural heritage from ancient times. Osaka is famous for good eating, the phrase KUIDAORE (eat ‘til you drop) was coined to describe Osaka’s love of good food. Osaka is also a good place to experience a modern Japanese city. Kansai is just the place for those who want to enjoy both historical street scenes as well as modern city life. If you had to choose only one region of Japan to explore, Kansai would be the easy choice.

JAPAN’S SNOW FIELDS Japan, despite its small landmass, oers some incredible skiing, with mountains of powder snow and is home to a surprising number of skiing areas numbering over 600 ski resorts. The best resorts are in the Hokkaido, Nagano, Niigata & Tohoku regions, where trails & runs suit all levels and each have a unique character. Whilst you are not skiing there are still plenty of activities to keep you occupied, including a dip in an onsen (hot spring) which is one of the best things to do after a day on the slopes. Skiers and boarders are able to combine amazing snow with the unique culture of Japan and it does not get better than this.

Great Powder and Tree Skiing
RUSUTSU
Rusutsu is one of Japan’s most popular resorts, all year round. It takes just 90 minutes to travel by bus from Sapporo’s Chitose International Airport, and one hour from Niseko. The main advantage Rusutsu has over other resorts in Hokkaido is the accessibility of the tree runs and back country. It’s possible to ski straight off the lifts and into the best tree skiing in Hokkaido, and then ski straight back out onto the lifts. This means on any given day, you get more powder turns and thus more “bang for your buck”.

Nozawa Onsen is also home to the annual Dosojin Fire Festival. This famous event revolves around a six-storey woodenshrine that becomes the target of fire-bearing villagers. 42 year old villager males sit the shrine atop a bed of pine branches looking on as the 25 year old local men defend the base bare handed. Traditionally in Japan, these two ages have been considered unlucky and the event is a form of cleansing ritual for them. Eventually, the defenders concede defeat and the shrine is allowed to burn, producing a spectacular fiery display. Tour available from Hakuba.
