THE ROCKS & CIRCULAR QUAY At the end of the eastern arm of Sydney Cove perches the Sydney Opera House, our most treasured and recognisable building. Take the leisurely walk past quality restaurants and cafés, the buzzing ferry and cruise wharves of Circular Quay to The Rocks; not only can you see Australia’s early history in its sandstone buildings, but The Rocks is one of the best places in the world for a pub crawl!

SYDNEY CITY CENTRE Sydney’s city centre is pretty easy to find your way around, with its main streets running in a grid pattern, dominated by Pitt Street and George Street. Here you’ll find some of Sydney’s best shopping and it’s always busy and bustling. Make sure to stop in at Hyde Park, visit the Australian Museum and take the ride up to the Observation Deck and SKYWALK at the top of the Sydney Tower Eye, up to 268 metres high!

MACQUARIE ST & THE ROYAL BOTANIC GARDEN SYDNEY Macquarie Street houses some of Sydney’s oldest buildings from colonial times, including Hyde Park Barracks, The Mint, Parliament House of NSW and the magnificent State Library of NSW. The Art Gallery of NSW is nestled in The Domain, a public open space that often hosts free concerts, and leads to the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, an oasis of calm in the centre of Sydney.

CENTRAL STATION & HAYMARKET Central Station provides the hub for all rail traffic from both city and country. Next to Central is Haymarket, where you’ll find Chinatown and some great bargains at Sydney’s Paddy’s Markets (see p49). Further towards Darling Harbour you’ll find the Powerhouse Museum and then Sydney Fish Market, the largest working fish market in the Southern Hemisphere.

DARLING HARBOUR Beautiful by day, but simply sensational by night! It has a huge open-air playground for the kids and other major attractions include the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo and Madame Tussauds Sydney. Ferries, cruise and jet boats also dock here, and on the far side over Pyrmont Bridge, is the terrific Australian National Maritime Museum. & MANLY Manly Beach Like Bondi, Manly Beach is both a local and an international favourite

WHAT TO DO IN MANLY A gentle surfing beach, it rarely gets too rough for swimmers and the golden shores are patrolled by the famous Manly Surf Club lifesavers in their iconic caps and ‘Speedos.’ Manly itself is a compact little suburb, with shops lining The Corso, the main street leading from Manly Wharf to Manly Beach, where the esplanade is dotted with great restaurants and cafés. Make sure to start off at the Visitor Information Centre just across from Manly Wharf – they can assist with some of the great ideas below…

SWIM

Manly Beach has plenty of waves for the surfers but is a fantastic swimming beach as well.

SNORKEL

Shelly Beach is a marine conservation area, so take a dive or a snorkel and come face to face with the local marina flora and fauna.

WALK

Over to Spit Bridge weaving through a mix of lush bushland and scenic harbourside trails; the 10km will take 3-4 hours to complete and you can then take the bus back to the city.

LOOKOUT

Up Darley Road, head for North Head Sanctuary offering spectacular views over stunning Sydney Harbour, bushland walks and rare flora and fauna.

Take this spectacular coastal walk along the cliffs. Bondi is perfect for a leisurely yet scenic walk. The most famous is Bondi to Bronte, an easy, strollerfriendly walk that offers plenty of stops for a swim or a coffee along the way. It stretches 3.4km and requires about an hour or two, depending on age and fitness. This very popular walk starts at the south end of Bondi Beach and takes in gentle Tamarama Beach as well as headland views from Mackenzies Point. If you are really fit you can continue on to Coogee Beach, or retrace your steps back to Bondi and head Ravesiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s north towards the headland known as Ben Buckler, taking in North Bondi and the Kiddies Pool on the way.
