Mexico January might be the coolest month weather wise across Mexico, but in many areas that makes it the best month. High season starts in early December and lasts through until the end of April, so January is likely to be a busy month. Blue skies and sea temperatures in the high twenties make the Yucatán Peninsula and its fabulous Caribbean coastline a great destination at this time of year, and with the cultural celebrations of Mérida’s annual Arts Festival taking place from 5 - 26th January there’s plenty going on in the region.

Whale watching on the Pacific coast is also great at this time of year, with humpback whales nursing their young in the sheltered waters.

Mexico : Copán

Falkland Islands Famous for its pristine marine environment, military history, windswept beauty and amazing wildlife, January is the middle of the summer in the Falklands, although the weather is notoriously unpredictable even in the warmest season. The bonus of a January trip to the archipelago is the long hours of daylight which open up opportunities for hiking the islands’ most scenic trails, fishing the estuaries and wildlife watching. Huge colonies of marine mammals and birds make their homes on the various beaches and islands, and the chances of being the only human in the vicinity while you admire them is pretty high. Summer is also the best season for seeing the famous Falklands wildlife rearing their young.

Brazil There is no better time to see Brazil’s exuberance and open-hearted character than during the Rio Carnival, which starts on the Friday preceding Ash Wednesday, and continues with all the pizazz and colour you would expect for the next five days. And what better setting for such festivities than the incredible rollercoaster landscape of Guanabara Bay which encompasses the city?

Despite the harsh conditions, plenty of creatures thrive in Namibia, and it can be a real eye opener to discover from your knowledgeable guide just how so many animals eke out a living here, sometimes using remarkable feats of adaptation to to survive. A good place to begin your Namibia wildlife adventure would be Etosha National Park in Namibia’s northern region. It’s a vast park which hosts over 300 species of birds and contains the Etosha salt pan which is big enough to be clearly visible from space. Within the park’s borders there are huge numbers of zebra and antelope, and significant populations of black rhino, giraffe, lion, oryx, wildebeest, elephant, and even leopard and cheetah.

Namibia is all about dazzling landscapes and vast empty spaces where the light pollution is about as close to zero as its possible to get on the planet, meaning incredible stargazing is yours for the taking. A great way to maximise your exposure to the night sky is by doing a multiday hike on the Tok Tokkie trail, which is perfect in March as the nighttime temperatures are not too cold. The daytime scenery competes with the splendour of the night sky on this famous Namibian trek. To round out your adventure, spend some time exploring the friendly capital, Windhoek, or the coastal hub of Swakopmund with its Germanic flavour before venturing to the windswept Skeleton Coast, the impressive Fish River Canyon or the majestic scenery of the red dunes around Sossusvlei. Costa Rica The dry season is well underway in Costa Rica

by March, when the weather is warm to hot and generally dry nationwide, with the exception of the Caribbean coast which sees some afternoon showers. Enjoy the variety of adventures that sets Costa Rica apart, from volcano hikes and hot springs to wildlife watching, canopy ziplines and lovely beaches - it’s all here. Whether you are into birdwatching or white water rafting, the Costa Rican landscape will oblige, with a fabulous variety of species and cloud forest scenery. The dry season is a good time for wildlife spotting in Costa Rica as water is scarce so creatures are on the move searching for a drink. Late March can get busy with spring breakers from the US, so aim for early March for lower prices and better availability.

Borneo, Malaysia A hothouse of incredible natural splendour, Borneo enjoys its drier season during March to October, when rainfall is lower. As it is located within the tropics it does rain frequently most of the year, but during the drier months you have a higher chance of seeing orangutans in the wild.

March is a shoulder season month in terms of visitor numbers, meaning better availability and fewer crowds. Sabah in particular is at its driest in March, making it a great time to explore the northern beaches of Lankayan Island or Kota Kinabalu or enjoy some of the world’s best dive sites at Sipadan. India Although some lowland areas of India get very hot in April, it’s a great time to head for the mountains of the north and northeast, as well as historic hill stations such as Shimla and Darjeeling. These are the best regions for hiking, and are very popular areas to visit in April and May. If you would like to experience some of India’s amazing historic monuments in the Golden Triangle, avoid the midday heat and make sure you are prepared with water and sun protection. Tiger safaris in many of India’s reserves are great at this time of year because the majestic cats are more visible as they search for water - head for Bandhavgarh National Park, Pench Tiger Reserve or Ranthambore National Park to see them.

The Galapagos Islands The tail end of the wet season, April in the Galapagos equals lovely green landscapes, fewer visitors and calmer seas. China You can expect lovely weather at this time of year in China, it’s a great month to visit as the north has thawed whilst the summer heat and humidity hasn’t yet got going in the south. The southern regions may see some showery days in May, but it won’t be cold so sightseeing is still a delight. During the first half of the month it’s worth spending some time travelling in Central China where wild peonies are in bloom, a stunning sight which is celebrated at the annual Luoyang Peony Festival. Take your pick from China’s vast array of attractions, from storied imperial cities and world famous monuments like the Terracotta Army and the Great Wall to hidden temples and the splendour of the rivers and mountains.

Uzbekistan Hitting that sweet spot between the icy winter and the scorching summer, May is the ideal time to embark on a Silk Route adventure. Embracing both European and Asian territory, Russia straddles the continental divide with ease. Its fabled vastness is really no exaggeration - Russia is the largest nation on earth, with no fewer than 9 time zones and occupying more than 16 million square kilometres, or 11% of the surface of the planet. Suffice to say, it’s big. The European portion accounts for about a quarter of the landmass and is home to three quarters of the total population, so this is an obvious place to start your Russian exploration. June is a fantastic month in terms of climate, as the summer is revving up and days are long and warm, though the short nights can still be very chilly. Moscow is a huge draw for visitors and cannot fail to impress with its grandiose imperial architecture and huge public spaces. Marvel at the sheer size and bombast of Red Square, where the candy colours and jaunty stripes of St Basil’s Cathedral jostle for attention with Lenin’s mausoleum, the State Historical Museum, GUM department store and the brooding bulk of the Kremlin.

Venture beyond the capital to the Golden Ring towns which perfectly embody the picturesque rural aspects of Russia, and enchant visitors with their historic monasteries, citadels, churches and kremlins all arranged against a canvas of bucolic Russian countryside which is verdant and lovely in June. To strike out further into Russia, what better way to travel than on the Trans-Siberian Railway, the iconic route that links Moscow and Vladivostok across 9,000 kilometres of incredible cultural and scenic diversity with important stops including Kazan, the hub of Tatar Russia, and Irkutsk for nearby Lake Baikal. St Petersburg comes into its own in June when its delightful waterways and grand surroundings hosts the White Nights celebrations.

Peru The trekking season is really hotting up in Peru in June, when the dry season starts, making conditions perfect for for scenic hikes around Cusco and Machu Picchu. Authorities have limited the number of people who can trek the Inca Trail by introducing a permit system, but as June falls outside typical school holiday time, there will be more permits available. Elsewhere in Peru, June is an equally appealing month for a trip to the coast where you can expect sunshine and pleasant temperatures, low rainfall and fresh temperatures in the highlands and Lake Titicaca, or warm, wet conditions in the Amazon rainforest. If your dates straddle June 21st, look out for the Festival of the Sun, the most important festival which involves music, dance and plenty of local food.

Peru

Rwanda & Uganda June heralds the start of the dry season in the Virunga mountains - the optimum time for gorilla trekking, which allows you a precious hour in close proximity to habituated mountain gorillas in the wild. The gorillas move at will so there could be some fairly rough ground to cover to find them drier conditions make the whole experience much more enjoyable. Either side of your trek, Uganda and Rwanda offer plenty to keep you busy, from safaris, birdwatching and lake expeditions to lively cities and cultural sights. June is the beginning of peak season for gorilla trekking in particular so make sure you plan in advance to ensure you get a permit for this bucket list experience.

A July visit has the extra appeal of the Guelaguetza Festival which is celebrated on the last two Mondays of the month, bringing together the various indigenous communities at the hillside venue with a splendid view where each community takes their turn to display traditional dress, dance and music to the crowds of spectators. Many centuries of humanity have left their mark on Mexico in other ways, too and you can experience the wonder of the ancient Mayan civilization when you explore one of the impressive Mayan sites such as Palenque or Chichén Itzá - a chance to step back in time and marvel at their architectural prowess. After all that culture, maybe a bit of relaxation is in order, and with its twin coastlines, Mexico can offer plenty of beaches to suit everyone. One of the highlights of a July trip to Mexico is the chance to experience the magical spectacle of fireflies in the forests. From June to August, the glowing bugs seek out humid wooded areas to perform to each other in the hope of finding a mate, and as dusk falls, the forests come alive. The blinking yellow lights flickering through the trees are a feast for the eyes, and keen photographers can capture some truly wonderful shots.

Oman The temperature in Oman during the summer months of June to September hits scorching levels throughout much of the country, but don’t rule it out straight away because this desert nation has a secret summer hideaway. Get up to altitude in the Al Hajar mountains and the temperatures are far more manageable, with a lovely dry climate and clear blue skies. This is low season in Oman and as such your accommodation budget will stretch so much further, and up in the mountains you can choose from dramatic hikes, wadi adventures and some incredible birdwatching opportunities. Vietnam is such a long, narrow country that it really consists of three climatic zones, each with contrasting conditions. For keen hikers as well as anyone seeking that breathtaking scenery of crinkle cut hillsides terraced into paddyfields, October is a fantastic time of year to plan your visit as this is when the far north - the mountainous region of Vietnam - enjoys the best weather for trekking. After the wet season, October sees cooler temperatures, lower humidity and dry, clear weather which shows off the region’s best features to maximum effect. The rice terraces around Mu Cang Chai, Hà Giang and Pù Luông turn a gentle golden hue before harvest, and around Hà Giang in particular the fields are full of pink and white flowering buckwheat which can be breathtaking in the right light.

Hanoi, the major city of the north, also enjoys a pleasant climate in October making it a great time to explore its characterful temples, shophouses and colonial architecture, and of course to sample its famous cuisine. Ha Long Bay and the surrounding coastline can occasionally experience stormy weather at this time but in general cruises are unaffected.

As you move south, October brings moderate rain to central Vietnam, but although Hoi An and Hue may be a little wetter at this time of year, you can still enjoy the ancient lanes, historic monuments and charming ambiance of these Vietnamese cultural heavyweights. Fine cuisine and great shopping are another highlight of Hoi An, so don’t let the showery weather put you off. Further south the delights of Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta are enjoying the beginning of the dry season in October, so you can expect sunny days interspersed with occasional showers while you explore the photogenic floating markets of the delta, the modern skyline of Saigon and perhaps the beaches which encircle the beautiful islands of Con Dao and Phu Quoc which see the best chance of sunshine in the second half of the month.

Head north for the show stopping destinations of the Elephant Coast, Drakensberg Mountains and northern national parks for the best opportunities to see South Africa’s incredible wildlife. November isn’t peak month for safari in the Kruger and surrounding national parks, as the spring rains mean there’s less of a need to animals to cluster near watering holes, but nevertheless it’s still a rewarding experience. Two other wildlife experiences in South Africa are at their best in November, however, so make sure you include Hermanus and iSimangaliso in your plans. Hermanus is the prime location on the Western Cape for whale watching, and although November is the tail end of the season, if you take a boat trip into the bay you are likely to spot lingering southern right whale mothers and their calves. Late November is also when loggerhead and leatherback turtles start to come ashore in the enchanting surroundings of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park to lay their eggs. Join a tour to see the mothers dig their nests, or come a few months later (February is best) to see the hatchlings make their way to the sea.

Nepal Many visitors to Nepal come for the Himalayan trekking, and November is the perfect time to head into these fabled mountains. Conditions at this time of year are dry and clear meaning stunning views from the famous trails taking in the incredible sawtooth peaks on the roof of the world. This is peak season because of the great weather, so it’s worth planning in advance to secure your choice of accommodation. Myanmar (Burma) To experience Myanmar at its best, aim for the cool, dry season which begins in November and lasts into February. Temperatures are just perfect - daily highs hover between 20 to 30 degrees celsius depending on location and altitude - and rainfall is almost non existent while humidity is low.

The coast enjoys lovely conditions with a gentle sea breeze and pleasant water temperatures for swimming, and sightseeing is a delight in cultural Yangon or mystical Bagan with its thousands of temples and stupas littering the horizon. Head to the incredible surrounds of Inle Lake, where birders will be pleased to note that some 20,000 migratory birds are present in December, and though it is peak season in Myanmar you will rarely come across crowds of visitors.

Southern India Kerala and Goa are great destinations at this time of year for those in search of some winter sun.

It’s a popular time to visit, so consider booking in advance for the best availability. Enjoy a Christmas celebration with a difference at the Cochin Carnival - a week long festival running from 25th December involving light installations, elaborate costumed processions, concerts, sports matches, food festivals and general merriment. Cultural events come thick and fast during December in Southern India, so look out for the Sunburn Music Festival in Goa, or the more traditional Indira Gandhi Boat Race which takes place in late December in the Kochi backwaters.
