The historic city of Vladimir was founded in 990 and is one of Russia’s oldest communities. With an architectural wealth, it has been decreed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our tour takes in Uspensky Cathedral, built between the 12th and 15th centuries. It is considered one of the most important and beautiful of Russian cathedrals, where many of the prominent Russian Tsars were crowned. From Vladimir we travel to Suzdal, one of Russia’s most perfectly preserved walled cities dating back to 1024, located 35 kilometres from Vladimir. Here we visit the atmospheric St Euthymius Monastery to witness an enchanting choral performance. And, of course, no Russian winter experience would be complete either without the horse-drawn sleigh ride through this stunning location. Special ‘Golden Eagle’ New Year’s Eve party on-board tonight.

Murmansk is a city halfway between Moscow and the North Pole, and 193 km north of the Arctic Circle. As the main city of Russia’s Kola Peninsula, it started as a tiny settlement and Arctic trading post. In 1916, under pressure from the British to establish a support port, Murmansk was founded. Thanks to the influence of the warm Gulf Stream, the port is ice-free year round. This is today the homeport for Russia’s nuclear-powered ice breakers. We get the opportunity that visit the Nuclear Icebreaker Museum Ship.

We leave our train with an overnight bag at the Russian border town of Nikel, and transfer by coach (90 minutes’ drive) across the Russian/ Norwegian border to Kirkenes for a two-night stay at the Thon Hotel (or similar). We visit the magical Snow Hotel, just 15 km from Kirkenes.
We then continue by sleigh to the nearby Fisherman’s Lodge with its cosy log fire, where our King Crab meal awaits. The King Crabs caught will be prepared and cooked for us. We return to the Snow Hotel and an opportunity to meet the resident reindeers, and visit the biggest husky dog farm in eastern Finnmark, or alternatively return to the Kirkenes Village for a walking tour.

8 AY We enjoy a welcome drink in the Snow Bar, and tour the 5 Snow Hotel with its ice sculptures and snow paintings by Jan local and international artists. After a traditional meal ARCTIC NORWAY (including a reindeer hotdog) in the hotel’s warm lodge Return transfer to Nikel, and return onboard Golden restaurant, we take an evening coach tour in search of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). If the sky is clear, Eagle our guest astronomer will be on hand to advise us during star-gazing, and will bring the night sky to life with his extensive knowledge.
Next morning a unique winter experience awaits us, a King Crab Fishing adventure. Our excursion begins with a snowmobile-drawn sleigh across the frozen fjords (Warm clothing and a helmet will be provided). You will be shown by a master guide how to catch the magnificent Arctic King Crab (which can span 2 metres wide, and weigh up to 15kgs) through a hole in the ice.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES IN KIRKENES You may like to book some additional optional activities such as a Snowmobile Safari (2 hours), Snow Shoe Walking Tour (2 hours), take a magical excursion by husky dog sledge (2 hours) or go in search of the Northern Lights by husky dog sledge (4 hours). Each sledge is pulled by a team of eight dogs, and can seat two people and a driver called a dog musher. These activities have limited places and should be requested at the time of booking the tour - please contact us for prices.

Showers, toilets and a Scandinavian sauna are provided in a building next to the Snow Hotel.

typical day allows us to sleep comfortably in our comfortable en-suite cabin as our private train travels through the night. Each day brings a new discovery opportunity in this unique part of our planet. Disembarking after breakfast, we get whisked away by coach to new adventures. At the end of the day we return to our hotel-on-wheels to be greeted by our cabin attendants with complimentary refreshments. Enjoy a hot shower in your en-suite bathroom, and join our travelling companions for drinks in the Lounge Bar followed by dinner in the Restaurant Car, as we set off again for our next destination. Dinner is accompanied by a selection of fine wines, and there’s no need to hurry as all guests are accommodated in a single sitting - so linger over coffee and reflect on the adventures of the day, or return to the Lounge Bar and listen to the resident pianist playing on the baby grand piano. Gold Class passengers benefit from complimentary drinks from the standard bar list in the Lounge Bar.
Some days will be spent partly or entirely on board the train, providing an opportunity to appreciate the vast unfolding Russian landscape. Different on-board activities are offered from time to time, so you might like to listen to a history and culture talk, take part in a basic Russian language lesson, try your hand at bridge, taste some vodkas, or improve your photographic skills. Off-train excursions take in all the major attractions of the places we visit, and it’s all included in the tour cost.

Accommodation Your Gold Class cabin (7 sq metres) have everything from a private bathroom with separate shower cubicle and underfloor heating, to a DVD/CD player, LCD screen, safe, individual air-conditioning, wardrobe, large picture window, and features a double lower bed and a single upper bed. These cabins cleverly maximise the available space by converting from a sitting configuration during the day into comfortable sleeping accommodation for the night. Your cabin provides a calm personal space in which to read, enjoy a DVD, or watch the landscape unfold through your large picture window. Your cabin attendant will deliver a DVD (complimentary) from the DVD library list in your cabin, on request. Bath robes, slippers and a hairdryer are available in each cabin.

The beautifully appointed Dining Car is a delightful venue in which to enjoy skilfully prepared meals on-board. Throughout the journey, meals are a relaxed affair with an informal dress code. It’s open-seating in the Restaurant Car, so you can dine wherever, and with whomever, you wish. Enjoy the delights of an on-the-train breakfast with a wide selection of pastries, cereals, freshly squeezed orange juice and cold continental options. Or enjoy a cooked breakfast brought to your table. Or try a Russian specialty - all accompanied by steaming hot tea and coffee. A continental breakfast basket (with tea or coffee) can also be enjoyed at leisure in your cabin.

For lunch and dinner, we enjoy fine food, great wines and attentive service in the welcoming atmosphere of the Dining Car. All meals at lunch and dinner are accompanied by an excellent choice of wines from around the world, along with mineral water, beer and soft drinks - and, of course, vodka! During our tour, we’ll be invited to a special dining occasion, the celebrated Caviar Dinner, which includes black sturgeon and red pacific salmon caviar.

Friday 11 Jan 19 Snowmobiling tour and Ice Fishing Today, you will drive by snowmobiles to a snow white forest lake full of fish. Try to catch your meal, a rainbow-trout, by ice fishing! In case you are not lucky, the host of the lake has promised to cook delicious soup by the fire of his wooden hut. After the lunch the snowmobile safari continues round the fells to the summit of Levi and back to the center. Then we will visit the old farm and its home museum. The guide will tell stories of the past and present life of reindeer herders. Once booked, usually airfares must be paid in full within 2-3 days. CLOTHING AND LUGGAGE Comfortable, good casual clothes are the general rule. Good walking shoes are a must, and you will need warm clothing. The international luggage allowance is 23kgs. Please restrict your luggage to one average size suitcase, and one carry-on bag of no more than 7kg. ELECTRICITY The voltage is 220 volts. DEPARTURE TAXES All international and local taxes as known at the time of tour preparation are included in your tour cost. However, should new government taxes, or fuel surcharges or any other fees be introduced, these will be advised to you, and funds collected at time of final payment.
