ARRIVE NEW DELHI
SUN, 16TH MARCH
This morning, we board our flight to India's colourful capital New Delhi, a major gateway to the country A bustling metropolis, Delhi has successfully combined both the ancient and the modern On arrival into this 'Power Capital', we are met and transferred to our hotel
With a massive population that exceeds 1 4-billion, India has a recorded history of some 30,000 years, which includes the mighty Mughals, the colonial years of British control, and the Independence Movement spearheaded by Mahatma Gandhi Among Delhi's constantly expanding number of urban skyscrapers, lie many historic monuments - remnants of bygone times These monuments stand as silent reminders of the region’s proud history and ancient legacy
After our long international flight, what's left of the day is at leisure. Our beautifully-located Claridge's Hotel is a blend of historic charm and modern luxury. It was India's very first post-independence 5-star hotel.

NEW DELHI
MON, 17TH MARCH
This morning, we embark on a privately guided tour of historic Old Delhi, visiting the famous Jama Masjid Mosque, followed by a colourful and exciting rickshaw ride through the narrow-congested alleys of Chandni Chowk, before visiting the Agarsen ki Baoli stepwell (an ancient water harvesting system), and beautiful Humayun’s Tomb.
Construction commenced on Jama Masjid in 1644 and was completed by the famous Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan. One of the largest mosques in India, it's made of red sandstone and marble. The courtyard is so huge that it can accommodate 25,000 devotees at the same time! This gorgeous mosque is sometimes referred to as Masjid-I-Jahanuma, meaning the 'Mosque commanding the view of the world' The tower of the Mosque provides a magnificent view of Old Delhi's spectacular bustling streets
Preserving the antiquity of Old Delhi, Chandni Chowk is a vibrant medieval bazaar, buzzing with colour and frenetic activity. It's a labyrinth of ancient narrow alleyways crammed with small shopfronts selling delicious snacks, sweets and savouries, or offering cutprice deals on a host of products, including clothes. Some of these atmospheric alleyways are where locals bargain for items from a fine selection of perfumes, jewellery, electronics, candles, lifestyle goods and numerous idols of gods and goddesses.
Lunch today will be served at Kwality Restaurant, located at the iconic Connaught Place. On offer will be both continental and a mix of North Indian cuisines, including some amazing street food!
Following lunch, we visit Agrasen-ki-baoli stepwell, a quaint and serene spot of historic and heritage interest among the bustle of today's urban Delhi The intricate structure and tranquil ambience of the stepwell have endeared it to film-makers, and as a cinematic backdrop It has featured in famous Bollywood movies Cool underground air greets visitors as they descend the deep stepwell Legend has it that the water in the baoli contained black magic - those who looked at it could fall into a trance and jump to certain death
Before we head back to our hotel, we visit one of Delhi's star attractions - a stunningly beautiful and historic World-Heritage-listed monument, Humayun’s Tomb. This tomb, built in 1570, was the first substantial example of Mughal architecture in India, and the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent. It inspired an architectural style that culminated in the construction of Agra's famous Taj Mahal. Inside the surrounding external walls, the most notable features are the garden squares with manicured pathways and water channels. This magnificent perfectly-proportioned garden mausoleum is topped by a double dome, built at the direction of the Emperor’s wife, Haji Begum.

NEW DELHI – AMRITSAR
TUE, 18TH MARCH
After breakfast, we transfer to the airport for our flight to Amritsar. Upon arrival, we are transferred to our hotel.
Amritsar (which means the 'Holy Pool of Nectar') is one of the most ancient and fascinating cities on the subcontinent. In Maharaja Ranjit Singh's reign (1801-1839, the Kingdom of Punjab), Amritsar superseded Lahore as the pre-eminent city of the Orient. As a longstanding gateway to Central Asia, it has always been a commercial centre of significance. Today, it's the thriving heart of global Sikhism - the seat of Sikh history and culture.
Lunch will be served at the hotel, before we spend a truly memorable and spectacular evening visiting the Golden Temple, one of the world's great sights! We'll witness the magnificent 'Palki Ceremony', where the Holy book of scripture is ritually carried from the main shrine to the inner sanctum (where it 'goes to sleep'), accompanied by a colourful procession of priests and devoted followers The atmosphere is one of intense spirituality, with chanting, lights, and lots of colour

AMRITSAR
WED, 19TH MARCH
Following breakfast at the hotel, we begin our day's sightseeing of Amritsar. The Golden Temple is huge, spectacular, and an amazing complex of global significance. We pay a daytime visit to this most sacred of the world's Sikh temples, before exploring the places of massive historical significance at Jalianwala Bagh.
During Maharaja Ranjit Singh's reign, the lower half of the Golden Temple was decorated with marble while the entire upper half was inlaid with copper covered by gold plate: hence its current name, the 'Golden Temple'. Today, this is the holiest of Sikh shrines, where 24/7 recitation of the divine word never ceases.
The Sixth Guru (Sri Hargobind) had the impressive Akal Takhat building constructed in 1609 as a seat of political sovereignty symbolising the unity of spiritual and temporal life It's the highest seat of earthly authority for Sikhism, a place where spiritual and temporal concerns of the Sikh people are addressed The Tower of Baba Atal Rai is an octagonal nine-storied structure about 50 meters high, with beautiful frescos relating to the life of Guru Nanak Dev Jain In the broader temple complex, there's an amazing traditional community kitchen where free food is served each day to about 100,000 people from all faiths and backgrounds, every day!
A memorial and museum at Jallianwala Bagh commemorates the spirit of those who lost their lives in a brutal massacre which took place here in 1919. British troops opened fire without prior warning on independence protestors in the Bagh, killing several hundred. This historic event was the turning point in India's struggle for independence, and is today a very significant heritage site.
This evening, we visit the incredible Wagah Border- the only border crossing between India and Pakistan. It's an army outpost 28-kms from Amritsar and 22-kms from Lahore in Pakistan - the 'final frontier' between two neighbouring but warring nations. Crowds gather at sunset to watch a colourful 'Retreat' ceremony which takes place on both sides of the border - a fabulous experience to witness from either side. The changing of the guards, and the ceremonial lowering of the flag ceremony, are carried out with great military pomp. As the sun sets, nationalistic fervour rises as lights are switched on to mark the end of the day Thunderous spontaneous applause erupts from the gathered crowds

AMRITSAR – DHARAMSHALA
THUR, 20TH MARCH
After breakfast, we embark on a scenic drive (4 ½ hrs approx) through the Himalayan foothills to Dharamshala, and check into our hotel before lunch Dharamshala is internationally recognisable as the home of the incumbent Dalai Lama, spiritual and political leader of the Tibetan people
In 1940, the Dalai Lama (real name Tensin Gyatso) became the 14th Dalai Lama of the highly religious (Buddhist) people of Tibet Communist China invaded Tibet in 1950, and Tibet became a 'national autonomous region' of China Buddhists in Tibet suffered under the anti-religious legislation of communist China, and after years of protests, a fullscale revolt broke out in 1959 The Dalai Lama was forced to flee as the uprising was crushed by Chinese troops He, and many of his supporters, fled on foot to India, going into permanent exile as a refugee in India at Dharamshala. The Dalai Lama and his supporters set up a shadow Tibetan government, which today remains active in exile. It's based at the busy little traveller town of McLeod Ganj, just uphill from Dharamshala. Dharamshala itself has a popular museum and a busy bazaar to explore on our afternoon at leisure in this atmospheric mountain community.

DHARAMSHALA - GARLI
SAT, 22ND MARCH
This morning, we drive 20-kms to visit the historic Kangra Fort, the largest fort in the Himalayas and oldest in India - before travelling through the scenically beautiful Kangra valley to reach Masrur Rock Cut Temple Impressive Kangra Fort has a massive history, featuring Rajput and Jain activities that stretch back 1,000 years The 8th-century Masrur Rock-cut Hindu Temple Complex is also one of the most unique in the Himalayas The principal temple is surrounded by smaller temples in a mandala formation, overlooking a sacred pool - all cut from one huge sandstone rock. There are ancient relief friezes that depict stories from Hindu texts. After visiting these rather obscure but outstanding mountain attractions, we continue driving to Garli Village before checking into our hotel and enjoying lunch. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure. Garli village is very picturesque and specialand our delightful heritage hotel here is something
SUN, 23RD MARCH
This morning we take a short leisurely walking tour of the Pragpur village. The ambience of this Garli-Pragpur Heritage Zone is zealously protected by the residents. In their endeavour to retain its unique character, a local citizen's committee carefully preserves their heritage buildings. Several of these structures are now being restored using original techniques, but with modern facilities appropriate for tourism. Later, we drive to the nearby village of Dada Siba to visit an old Radha Krishna Temple, followed by a visit to Pong Lake, a large local reservoir/lake well-known as a wildlife sanctuary and internationally recognised Ramsar birdwatching wetland After lunch, we take an afternoon walk around the hotel to enjoy the calmness and beauty of Himachal

GARLI - SHIMLA
MON, 24TH MARCH
Today is a 'drive day' through this very scenicallybeautiful hill-state to spectacular Shimla - stopping for lunch along the way. Shimla (population approx 175,000) is the capital of Himachal Pradesh state, and extends along a high ridge in the Himalayan foothillsaverage altitude about 2,250-metres In 1864, Shimla became the summer 'hill-station' capital of British India After independence, it became the capital of East Punjab, and later was made capital of Himachal Pradesh Today, it is recognised for its colonial architecture, its outstanding natural environment, and its role as an educational hub It remains the terminus of the narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla Railway (home of the famous 'Toy Train'), a UNESCO World-Heritage site built by the British in 1903 Shimla was home to Rudyard Kipling (Nobel Prize for Literature) who famously wrote stories and poems of British soldiers, and children's stories
This mountain community is also known for its arts and handicraft shops (jewellery, embroidered articles, sculptures, and leather goods) that line ‘The Mall’, a 7km-long pedestrian roadway in the heart of town. Here, shops and people converge, reflecting the supreme charm and colonial history of this unique mountain community. The Ridge is a large open space alongside the Mall Road. It hosts the the Christ Church, secondoldest church in Northern India. The Lakkar Bazaar (near the Mall) is a market specializing in wooden items and crafts. Unusually, numerous agile monkeys roam the city. Shimla is home to South Asia's only natural ice-skating rink, from December to February.
In the evening, we'll enjoy a short walk on the famous Mall Road, before dinner at our wonderful historic hotel. Shimla leads the list of Indian cities with the highest-ranked hotels - of which the Oberoi Cecil and Wildflower Hall are the most popular.

SHIMLA
TUE, 25TH MARCH
After breakfast we make our way to the Jakhu Temple (2-kms from town), an ancient atmospheric temple dedicated to the popular Hindu deity Hanuman. It is situated at Jakhu Hill, together with a huge 33-metrehigh statue of Hanuman. This is Shimla's highest peak (approximately 2,600-metres above sea level), with views of the city and the snow=covered Himalayas.
Our next highlight is the Vice Regal Lodge. Drenched in colonial vibes, this majestic well-maintained building is one of India's most-impressive British-era buildings. Surrounded by lush green botanical gardens, the Lodge once served as the summer residence of the Indian Viceroy each year, when the administrative centre temporarily moved from Delhi to the cooler climate of Shimla The lodge is also known as the President's House, as it now serves as a summer retreat for the current Indian President Positioned on Observatory Hill, the Lodge offers panoramic views of the entire area
Our tour then takes us to visit the Gaitey Theatre and Benteny Castle Museum The Gothic Revival style Gaiety Theatre was opened in 1887 It was once part of the large Town Hall Complex, which opened in Queen Victoria’s Jubilee Year The first recorded performance coincided with her coronation - making the Shimla Amateur Dramatic Club one of the oldest in the country.
Lunch today is at a local restaurant. After lunch, we drive for about 45 minutes to Dhalli and take a short walk to the Oberoi Wildflower Hall where we will enjoy high tea, surrounded by fabulous mountain views.
We finish the day back at the hotel with dinner.

SHIMLA - CHANDIGARH
WED, 26TH MARCH
We take a scenic train journey this morning to Kandaghat, on the famous 'Toy Train' This Shimla to Kalka line (96-km-long in total) is listed in the 'Guinness Book of Records' as the steepest railway in the world It was built during the British Raj to connect the summer capital with the rest of the Indian rail system We travel a short section of the line, through the most scenic high-altitude part Light refreshments are served onboard.
At Kandaghat, we disembark and are transferred to the Himachal Tourism restaurant for lunch, before continuing our journey by coach to our Taj hotel in Chandigarh - a scenic 2 hour drive. Chandigarh is a very unique city. It's a Union Territory that serves as the capital of two neighbouring states, Punjab and Haryana. A Union Territory in India is similar to the federal territory of Canberra/ACT in Australia.
Chandigarh was the first planned city in India, and is known internationally for its architecture and urban design. India's cleanest city, Chandigarh is sometimes called 'The Beautiful City' because of its green central grid of gardens and pollution-free environment.

CHANDIGARH – NEW DELHI
THUR, 27TH MARCH
Our privately guided tour this morning takes us to the Open Hand Monument, followed by the unusual Rock Garden. Open Hand Monument was designed by the same architect who designed the city of Chandigarh, the Frenchman Le Corbusier. It is the official emblem of Chandigarh It is planted in a trench, which is called the Trench of Consideration The hand, with its palm spread wide, resembles a weathercock and rotates in the direction of the wind Many say that the shape also resembles that of a dove, a symbol of peace and happiness It can be seen as an artistic representation that one should always be open to both giving and receiving Next is a visit to the Rock Garden, which is a testament to human ingenuity, creativity and perseverance It's quite a surreal experience The garden is comprised of a series of interlinked courtyards, each containing a number of similarly themed sculptures created out of a melange of raw materials We will return to our hotel for lunch before being transferred to the airport to board our flight in the late afternoon to Delhi.

We are met upon arrival in grand Ladakhi style with Daman (drum), Surna (Oboe) and auspicious song, before being transferred to our resort. Located in a beautiful Ladakhi village setting, the resort was built using rammed earth. The remainder of the afternoon will be at leisure to acclimatise in this amazing destination at the very north of India. It lies in the upper-valley of the Indus River, high in the Himalayas (3,500-metres above sea level) on the border with southwest China This evening, we will be treated to a light musical moment created especially for us

SAT, 29TH MARCH
This morning we debrief on the day’s program, before departing to visit Chushot Village for a Ladakhi Celebration Here, we get to experience traditional archery, a folkloric performance with authentic folk songs/music, cultural dance, and a horse polo match! These exciting experiences are then complimented with beautifully curated Ladakhi cuisine for lunch Post lunch, we visit the 'Old Town' for a Heritage Walk which will cover many attractions including the Central Asian Museum, Munshi House, Lala's Café, Leh Palace and Tsomo Namgyal. A true highlight will be visiting a Ladakhi home for Ladakhi Tea. In the pages of history, this ancient capital of Leh featured strongly in one of the greatest cross-cultural crusades of its time! Leh developed a reputation as an important transHimalayan trading post on the ancient Silk Route. Trade came from the valleys of the Kashmir region and Afghanistan, from the highest reaches of the Tibetan Plateau and throughout the Mongolian Empire.
Situated in the heart of Leh (close to the Central Market), the fort-like Central Asian Museum has a peaceful courtyard that houses Leh's oldest mosque and a small exhibition hall displaying the history, relics and traditions that featured in the lives of Tibetan, Kashmiri, Turkestani, and Ladhaki traders. Antiquated Lala's Café is a mud-brick café with a romantic history! Andre Alexander, a revered historian and traveller, built the structure for his Tibetan wife, Lala. It stands today, true to the tale of their love, long after they’ve gone At Munshi House we explore historic perspectives that lie within the original residence of the King’s tax collector! Proudly known as the Munshi House, the primitive kitchen of this traditional Ladakhi mansion still stores original earthen pots, and an interior which is a reflection of Ladakh's vernacular architecture The masonry walls of Leh Palace have watched over the Old Town like a protective parent since the 16th century Erected without machines or modern engineering, they have survived the centuries, retaining their age-old glory and keeping their perpendicular perfection intact to this very day The walls of Tsemo (Tsemo Namgyal) were fortified in celebration of an ancient victory, yet their presence today is quietly spectacular and elusive

SUN, 30TH MARCH
Today's early morning breakfast will be served around 6:30am in preparation for an adventure filled day At about 7 45 am, we join approximately a hundred assembled monks at prayer-time as we visit the spectacular and famous Thiksey Monastery This memorable experience will be followed by a private audience with a scholar monk at the monastery, where we'll be able to exchange ideas about life and consciousness - perhaps take away some ancient knowledge from Ladakh! We drive about 4 hours through beautiful high-altitude mountain plains to the unique frozen Pangong Lake where our picnic lunch will be served. At an elevation of 4,225-metres, the lake (long and narrow) spans eastern Ladakh and western Tibet. A significant part of the lake lies in disputed territory, providing a buffer zone between Chinese and Indian administered areas. Both Chinese and Indian militaries have vessels stationed on the lake, which remains sensitive along the border line of control. We spend some time at the lake before we head back to our resort where a Gala Evening is waiting for us. Our last dinner will have entertainment with Ladakhi music.
