MESSAGE FROM THE TEAM
has been another busy start to a new financial year for our teams at Travel Masters and The Travel Studio - and that's the way we like it! Sincere thanks to all of you who continue to trust us with your holiday planning. It is with great pride that we have again this year been recognised by the industry for the quality of our amazing staff team. Julie, Lori and Jessica recently represented us at the Virtuoso Global Travel Week in Las Vegas, where recognised Luxury Travel Advisers from over 100 countries met and networked intensely with the world’s best tour operators, cruise lines and accommodation specialists (over 330,000 face to face meetings in total!!) at three famous hotels: the Bellagio Hotel, the Aria Resort & Casino and the Vdara Hotel. It’s quite an event! Neil and Lola represented us at Cruise360 in Sydney, now officially the largest and most important Cruise Conference in the Southern Hemisphere, with global speakers and leading leisure experts. It's a highquality learning opportunity that helps keep us at the leading edge of the cruise industry. Michelle is on her way to a wonderful opportunity to check out the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido for us, during WWW.TRAVELMASTERS.COM.AU
which she will also soak up the picturesque autumn scenery, sake breweries, craft markets and the famous Furano Flower Farms. Hokkaido is a booming leisure destination attracting global attention in both summer (adventure travel) and winter (ski market). Unfortunately we at Travel Masters must (temporarily) say farewell to Chelsea, however we certainly wish her well as she removes her Receptionist badge, and replaces it with one simply saying…'Mum Extraordinaire'. Our escorted Silk Road and Tibet tour is well underway, and by the time you read this, they will be enjoying time in the Buddhist sacred city of Lhasa, with spectacular views of (and a walk through) the fabulous Potala Palace! Beth and Bob are currently expedition cruising the waters of Melanesia with a group of our clients exploring the colourful cultures of the Solomon Islands. Finally, preparation is now well advanced for our 22nd Cruise Sale Day (yes, 22 consecutive years as Australia’s best!!) – and this year will see our widest ever range of cruising
options under one roof. In addition to the many regular cruise lines and travel companies that regularly participate, this year we welcome debutants from Aurora Expeditions, Cruise & Maritime Voyages, Trails of Indochina & Tiki Tours. Enjoy this Spring Edition of the Wanderings, and (as always) we invite you to check out the specials and exceptional travel opportunities. Great cruise deals, fantastic group tour options are on offer, as well as opportunities for SOLO travellers. Our expert Senior Travel Advisers at both agencies are keen to assist you to maximise the value of your holiday, with fresh destination ideas and exciting new holiday experiences. Heartfelt ‘thanks’ for your support of our teams at Travel Masters & The Travel Studio. Please be assured of our continued care and personal attention at all times. We look forward to being of service when next you travel. Happy Travelling! Julie & Neil (Managing Directors)

uring our recent Africa Escorted Tour, our illustrious group made a visit to the Ann Van Dyk Cheetah Centre. Once upon a time, when little was known about conservation, farmers all over Southern Africa would ruthlessly kill one of the world’s most beautiful big cats – the cheetah – because they were known to kill stock. In 1971, a young woman called Ann van Dyk offered her parents’ chicken farm in the foothills of the Magaliesberg mountains to the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa, just as it was about to stop its cheetah breeding programme because of a lack of space. Always a visionary, Van Dyk realised that unless these magnificent, littleknown, and barely understood animals were protected and studied, they would face extinction. Today, her internationally world-famous and awardwinning sanctuary and wildlife enclave has bred over

800 cheetahs, some of which have found new homes in the wild, while others have been exported to reputable zoos and reserves all over the world – an astounding achievement considering the cheetah population in South Africa was estimated at 700 when the De Wildt breeding programme first started. In 1986, the centre celebrated its first major success and received international recognition when the cheetah was removed from the South African endangered species list. A number of other creatures are also housed here including African wild dogs, brown hyenas, servals, suni antelopes, riverine rabbits and a population of vultures. So, while the group visited this wonderful centre, a collective decision was made to sponsor one of the residents. We are so proud and humbled to welcome Charlotte to the Travel Masters & The Travel Studio’s family!

MEMORIES OF MOROCCO by Jan Hallam
OUR ESCORTED GROUP MEMORIES
We started out as strangers unaware of pending dangers That might lurk in every corner of Maroc. But one step in Casablanca sent our cares to Blasacanca As we trekked from mosque to souk and souk to mosque. With wine in short supply (they said that mosques were always dry!) We satisfied our needs with food galore. Those breads that reached our lips now sit heavily on our hips And the cous cous stays on board for ever more! The city of Rabat - a work of art from centuries past. But just a tease for what was yet to blind our senses. Once we hit the souks of Fes, then nought could stop the frenz Of wild and wanton women – shoppers’ heaven! We felt for our Lone Ranger, tried to warn him of the danger When women's whims and fancies took to flight. We promised Thursday nights could bring all his dreams to light If his patience could just hold until that night.
South America 2018
HARBIN Ice & Snow Festival 2018
But the desert sands were calling and the sun's soft rays were falling And the camels waited - patient as a lamb. Then......a feast to satisfy every hungry traveller's eye. And we slept the sleep of stillness only desert nomads can.
Beyond the Polar Circle 2018
And Marrakech! So green and fresh. Mad...bad...magic Marrakech! It’s a must for travellers all, though young or old. Snake charmers....water sellers....acrobats and fortune tellers. Just wait until we’re home – some many memories will unfold. The Atlas track was testing - no chance of Redwon resting As he braved those peaks and curves with skills amazing. But we made it safely down in time to scout the little town, Cross its rivers, climb its winding tracks and mazes. We'll not forget the “dankey” ride straight up the mountain side, Their feet so sure and certain as we clung To every strap and mane, until we reached that mountain plain To find a feast of food and scenery quite unsung.
Splendours of Morocco 2018
Now did I mention souks? Ah! In every city there they lurk. A trap for one lone man, his groans unheeded. Essaouira topped the list with hawkers too hard to resist. We were lost to thoughts of cost or goods unneeded. Our cooking skills were on display, and even Mark took part in play. And we showed our Charts of Excellence with pride. We dared, with some alarm, to test the great unknown hamam. Now we’re clean and fresh and oh so well baptised! Alas the time has come to part, with our goods and works of art And we swear to rendezvous and come back soon. As we say adieu...farewell, we have many tales to tell, And our footprints stand forever in those shifting desert dunes. Au revoir Maroc!

You can stay inside the National Park at family run lodges with farm to table food. The Albanian locals are very hospitable, it is actually written in tradition to be friendly and protect tourists, so it is extremely safe and the few that know English love to practice with visitors and tell stories of their unique history.

Valbona Valley, Northern Albania
We believe our Travel Advisers are possibly the ‘most travelled’ team out there. All four corners of the globe have been explored and all seven seas have been sailed by our team. So, we wanted to ask some of them a simple question… MICHELLE - TAIWAN Your visit of Taiwan may begin with the thought of just numerous Temples. However, Taiwan surprised me with its stunning hot springs, mountainous terrain, hikes, biking, temples, people and the food! Taiwan is a little Gem should be seen and experienced by everybody. Sun Moon Lake and Toroko Gorge are just some of the many highlights. A true unexpected adventure! JULIE – THE AMAZON RIVER Travelling along one of the world largest rivers, enjoying the amazing array of wildlife, including the Pink Dolphins, Sloths and Monkeys. Visiting villages to meet the local indigenous people and just walking through the jungle, with all the sounds and smells of nature all around you. A huge highlight in our South America Escorted Tour. LOLA – KAKADU NATIONAL PARK Kakadu NP, along with the Yellow River and the Litchfield Falls gave me the best Birdlife I have ever experienced, along with the largest Crocodiles lurking the murky waters underneath waiting for their prey – both with and without feathers!
Off-The-Beaten-Track destination you have visited, and why?
”
BETH – CAMPING IN IN THE DUNES OF MOROCCO A new sense of luxury… deep in the desert dunes where you can experience the idyllic silence and remoteness of Morocco’s Saharan Desert. The canvas Bedouin tents were equipped with wall to wall Berber rugs, and handcrafted Moroccan furniture. Activities include camel trekking, sandboarding, stargazing, meet the Nomadic locals, and enjoy a cocktail amongst the stunning red sand dunes. I’m looking forward to experiencing this again next year on our Morocco Escorted Tour. NEIL – ZANZIBAR, TANZANIA A melting pot of British, French, Arabic and Swahili cultures, all locked together in a paradise island in the Indian Ocean. The island is steeped in history, with the Sultan’s Palace and Arab Fort as a highlight. Throw in the white sand beaches, cobblestone streets, friendly locals and the amazing food (thanks to the many spice plantations on the island) and you have the perfect hideaway. JESSICA - VALBONA VALLEY, NORTHERN ALBANIA This area of the world has all that nature lovers could want – scenic mountains, rivers, blue lakes, waterfalls and more.
RICHARD – NIUE Niue, in the South Pacific has a completely unique way of life. Niue is surrounded by warm and clear blue seas which provide fantastic diving and snorkelling areas with Dolphins spotting opportunities yearround. With only 1,500 people on the island there is a close family spirit that can be felt throughout the island. There is no public transport of any type!
DAVE – SÓLLER, MALLORCA My memories of travelling by an old wooden train from Palma de Mallorca to the picturesque town of Sóller, is special. Once you are there, you are greeted by market vendors that offer some of the best Balsamic Vinegar, Wines and Leather goods you will find in the Mediterranean.
