Given the equine nature of nomadic life, much importance is placed on the horse races. Drawing herdsmen from hundreds of miles around and townsfolk alike, races are staged on the vast steppes covering distances of up to 20 miles. We highly recommend booking early for our Naadam Festival tour. Overnight stay in a hotel. (L/D) DAY 15. JUL 12 (TUE) ULAANBAATAR / DEPARTURE Breakfast at the hotel. AUG 07 (SUN) DANSHIG NAADAM 115KM After a very early breakfast, drive to Hui Doloon Hudag for the Danshig Naadam. Danshig Naadam originates in the 16th century, when Mongolia was divided into seven khoshuus (region) after Gersenz Jalair Khaan’s (the 16th generation descendant of Chinggis Khaan) widow divided Khalkha Mongol to her seven princes. The seven khoshuus of Khalkha gathered annually at Danshig Naadam and competed in the Three Manly Games of the Mongols – archery, wrestling and horse racing. Danshig was an important event, which unified the rupturing Khalkha princes under one roof. Besides enjoying the festive atmosphere, horse racing and traditional archery, there will be ample opportunities to photograph various Buddhist rituals, including the Tsam dance. Tsam dance is an ancient ritual. Recorded evidences show that Tsam was first performed in 775-881 in Tibet. The word ‘Tsam’ means a dance of the Buddha (deva) and elements of this dance show as if protectors and deities have physically descended on Earth. In Mongolia, the Tsam was introduced at the beginning of the 18th century and the first Tsam performance in Mongolia was in Erdene-Zuu Monastery in 1786. After lunch at a ger camp drive back to the Danshig Naadam ground to enjoy the Mongolian traditional wrestling and cheer with the crowd. Return to the hotel. (L)

experience Mongolia’s wilderness. The gers are made from wooden frames with layers of canvas and felt. Interior wood is carved or brightly painted and they are equipped with two or more beds, a small table and stools. Communal bathroom facilities are in basic, but clean blocks nearby. There are also restaurants and bars in a separate building, or in large gers. Whilst visiting Mongolia is hugely rewarding, it is a wilderness destination and the accommodation is basic. Juulchin Tourism Corporation uses the best gers available in each area and the itinerary has been put together to enable stays in the best camps at the most attractive locations. SUGGESTED CLOTHES & PACKING LIST What clients should expect for meals: What is available in Mongolia? Generally, the quality of meals in Mongolia is good, due to the quality of meat, which is 100% organic and free-range. Meals in the city will be in restaurants, which serve European, Asian and Mongolian cuisines. In the ger camps, the meals will be either European or Mongolian. When camping with tents, meals will be much simpler. Extremes of weather and how to prepare for them:
