At the outset, we wish our dear readers a very happy new year!
A new year is the harbinger of hope, of new beginnings, of another chance at the game of life.
It’s a wake-up call to pull up our figurative socks, straighten our backs and mend our ways.
To let the bygones be bygones, and look ahead with light and cheer. To get back the spring in the step and embrace joie de vivre.
As the wise poet said all those years ago: “Gather ye rose-buds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today, Tomorrow will be dying.”
So get the drums rolling, the roses blooming, and seize the new year with good cheer!

Bengaluru is a traveller’s delight. It starts with the air conditioned Volvo buses and the pre-paid taxi counter at the airport. Not to mention, the pre-paid auto counters at the city’s railway stations. But the finest example is the ease with which you can navigate the central business district of MG Road and around with the Big 10 buses. You can hop on and hop off at any point after your shopping expedition. But the finest experience will be the first reach of the Namma Metro train running from Old Madras Road to MG Road. Happy travels.
Bengaluru has become the first Indian city to have its own logo, joining the club of global metros like New York, Paris and Berlin. The logo was unveiled recently, with letters BE and U highlighted, reflecting the city’s ethos where everyone gets a chance to be oneself.
The new Bengaluru logo will establish Brand Bengaluru on the global tourism map.

WithBengaluru, the sobriquets keep getting added up. From Air Conditioned City to Aviation Capital to Garden City, this small town turned technopolis has added a new word to the American lexicon: ‘Bangalored’. “Always beginnings are good,” starts saying Neena, the dynamic hospitality professional who has been helming a leading hotel chain of Coimbatore. This statement sets the tone for the rest of her freewheeling conversation on her outof-the-box but very relevant ideas, vision and mission for the hospitality industry as well as the society at large.
Neena wears many hats – that of an entrepreneur, hotelier, social reformer, philosopher, reformer… the list is long and her dreams are many. The road ahead is uphill, fraught with skeptics and non-believers, but the lady is not one to give up or accept ‘no’ for an answer. She has her mind set on bringing about a revolution of sorts in the hospitality world where everyone is intent on only looking at the bottomline while missing the big picture for the future.
“Empowering the manpower is the need of the hour...”
The dynamic Neena implements her vision to revolutionise hospitality
Neena wears many hats – that of an entrepreneur, hotelier, social reformer, philosopher…
In her latest avatar she is Founder and Chairman of Arthida Creations, an offshoot of her existing Arthida Foundation for Lives The mission of this outfit is “Empowering the Manpower” – a cause close to Neena’s heart.
Hospitality is one among her many visions. During Covid the hotel industry languished, but post-Covid people are travelling with a vengeance and hotel occupancy is up-to 80% and even all set to reach 100% occupancy. But the manpower for the hotels is still at 50% or less, due to several factors like retrenchment during the pandemic, relocation of staff to their native places or reimagining their professional life. There is an urgency to fill this large gap.
Today’s crisis facing the hospitality industry is a manpower crisis, with severe shortage of “employable” staff. They are finding it hard to place, and even harder to retain, employees. The problem starts at the level of the hotel management colleges, which are churning out students who have not been taught the very basics which form the foundation of the hospitality industry. The first basic step which is “smile”. This one small word called smile is as important as the uniform donned by the hotel staff. How to greet, how to meet and how to treat guests. How to welcome them with a smile and make them feel warm. This training is never imparted in any professional course even though it is the most crucial aspect of this industry.
One of the objectives of Arthida Creations is to fill this gaping lacuna in the current situation, and provide the relevant training at various levels of how to groom any prospective or existing hotel staff to become equipped with the requisite interpersonal skills for guest relations.
This is the education of a warm welcome, courteous language, hospitable body language, confidence to talk to guests and other such intangible but very essential skills that form the building blocks of hospitality.
The first basic step in hospitality is “smile”. This one small word is as important as the uniform donned by the hotel staff...
Training provided to new recruits in hotels is more on practical and day-to-day running operational matters. But, this teaching which goes beyond perfunctory training is missing, which has to be inculcated in them to develop confidence.
This is what Neena calls empowering the manpower – i.e. equipping them with the power to handle the guests with complete warmth, ease and confidence, by enhancing their personality and skills.
The hotel industry’s preoccupation with revenue and bottomline is a short-sighted outlook. If the aspect of personality development and soft skills teaching is not addressed on an urgent footing, within a space of 10 years, the service standards will be lost forever. Thereby, losing the very edge that the hospitality industry stands on.
“Common
Employees will forget the basics of welcoming guests. This will be a death knell for the hospitality world indeed.
Hoteliers have to rise beyond the mindset that business has now picked up postpandemic and therefore they don’t have to bother with staff education. Neena is a wake-up call to the industry to come out of their cushy comfort zones of ringing cash registers, and smell the coffee that’s brewing ready to blow up in a few years’ time.
Neena wants to fill this service gap by providing staff level training, inside the hotel training as well as college student level teaching. She wants to shake up the complacent industry to sit up and seriously look at fulfilling this gap with foresight and responsibility. It is her way of doing a service for the hospitality industry which has been a part of her for so many years. She also wants to sensitize the hoteliers, owners and investors that they are providing livelihood for so many families which are dependent on their employees.
In the end it all comes down to good administration and sound management. If the administration in strong, the revenue and the balance sheet will automatically become strong as well, she explains. Her expertise which she wants to bring to the fore now is how to revamp the hotel, and create a good administrative practices to take care of the issues, present and future. For manpower crisis, manpower knowledge and manpower empowerment is needed. “In manpower today, man is there but power is missing!” she says. With filling the existing gaps, one can check the revenue leakage, ensure that owners and employees equally benefit, and profit and loss is maintained optimally.
Message and mission of Arthida Creations is to involve all the parties in fulfilling the future of hospitality industry. The solutions lie in education, counselling, guiding, training, coaching the individual employees to make them the right ‘fit’ for the whole organisation. She exhorts people in power to enhance their common sense.
“Common sense is the parent of knowledge and education.” An employee should work very happily. Reaching, acceptance and implementation of the training is important.
Neena wants to provide this personalised training, personalised guidance, personalised advice to each and every employee and employer, in order to rekindle the spark and sparkle of hospitality world.
Neenathe one-woman army, marching ahead relentlessly for creating change with far-reaching impact...
Going beyond hospitality, Neena is also very passionate about her social reform works which she has been involved in with her Arthida Foudation, whether it is for uplifting of the underprivileged, the weaker sections, the transgender people or other marginalised sections of society. Tribals, the differently abled and many other categories of people face issues that are often swept under the carpet by society which she takes up and reforms.
Like the “pancha bhuthas”, even the underprivileged have 5 elements that need to be taken care of, namely, food, shelter, education, medicine and peace. These 5 basic requirements she likens to the pancha bhutas which are essential for any life.
With her 27 years in the hospitality industry, Neena is now ready to expand her wings and bring her passion, zeal, commitment and organisational skills to make a larger difference.
Like the “pancha bhuthas”, there are five basic elements that need to be taken care of, namely, food, shelter, education, medicine and peace...
She is very philosophical in her approach. As she says, “There should be a reason for each and every birth. I should always respect my birth reason for others, the people around me, the needy. From a plant to a human being, I love to pass every second talking only good about everyone, with no expectation. What I know, I will share. What is good, I will pass on.”
Through her vision and deep philosophy and ideas, her commitment and her energy to bring about a change are apparent in every activity she undertakes. She is a onewoman army, marching ahead relentlessly for creating change for far-reaching impact.
“Taking the example of a small village with 200 families, it is a sample of a small universe. Why can they not be like us? I want to give them an equal platform for them to realise their potential as well, teach them what I have learned naturally from my own experience and surroundings. I want to empty my good things to people,” she trails off.
Neena is unstoppable, with her many ideas, which all come down to service for people everywhere. She moves ahead – with passion, with energy and with the courage of conviction on her side.
Arthida Creations is for employees’ guidance, counselling and the rights of staff, and empowering the manpower. It is equally there for employers and owners for very strong administrative control, enhancing revenue and arresting the revenue leakage and ensuring that owners stay as owners.
Arthida Foundations For Lives is for taking care of the underprivileged and needy people for providing the five elements of food, shelter, education, medicine and peace all around.

The city is famous for its bars and pubs.
It’s called the Beer Capital of India. With good reason. But the best reason to pub hop? It’s cosmopolitan crowd and the niche pubs that serve a select clientele. There are lounge spaces for the ladies, retro lovers and jazz enthusiasts. Not to mention, resto-bars, sports bars, roof-top bars, hookah bars, dance bars and cigar lounges for the casual and adventurous. Not to mention, the city’s first wine boutique pub. Reason enough to rewind, reboot and restart.
•Alcohol may not be served at some of these places, as per Supreme Court regulation. Please call the pub/restaurant to confirm.

Rohit G Kopparam, owner of Acclaim Motors Pvt Ltd, an avid rider, a motorbike enthusiast, and a group member of Acclaimed Riders Motorcycling Club-ARMC takes us through his journey of riding through uncharted territories that have let him live his life large.
Professionally, Rohit G Kopparam sells and services Royal Enfield motorcycles, his store Acclaim Motors Pvt Ltd is located in Yelahanka and was established in 2014. Having a passion for riding, even before he started his business led him to create a group that conducted riding experiences for the customers. They undertake different kinds of trips in and around Bangalore, such as overnighters, weekends around 300-400 km, and even further away to Ladakh, Goa, and other places. He wanted to curate riding experiences, not just sell motorcycles, so he created the club in the year 2015. He wanted his customers to experience a riding community, and in a few years, it became a 300-member club, with enthusiastic first-timers and old-timers riding together.
Rohit elaborates, “Every club has close to 50 to 60 close-knit riders, or at the very least there are 10 riders, and the clubs have certain do’s and don’ts. As we ride across different terrains, we need to have certain regulations regarding safety and comfort. We have pointers in place as that makes it much easier for first-timers to follow. Our goal is to keep it fun as it’s an adventurous unwinding experience”. The longest ride the club has taken is in Spiti Valley and Ladakh in June - July of 2019, which took around two weeks. The ride had 25 close-knit riders, and the support and consistency of the group through the harsh terrain of Spiti Valley had been remarkable. Ladakh being easy is a much preferred destination for many riders, but incorporating Spiti was a challenge for the group.
The ride was a huge learning and a very unique experience for the group. This particular ride in the Spiti circuit was chalked out well, and the riders knew where to start and stop, but they had underestimated the terrain.
As they got there they had to ride through the river bed, which was an age-old dried-up river with boulders and rocks and was very difficult to ride on, and this journey took them five days to cross and reach the tarmac of their destination.
Reminisces Rohit, “When we reached the tarmac, we were all so ecstatic that one of our riders got off his bike and kissed the tarmac. The intensity of the ride took a toll on many riders – mind and body, with acclimatisation, high altitude, and changing temperature, which led to riders falling sick due to dehydration, heat. Additionally, the mechanical challenges of pushing these machines through these terrains and altitudes added to our difficulty which made the ride the most challenging for the group as we were in an isolated area with just the sky and land. The best part was the support we gave each other which gave us the strength that led us to reach the destination.”
The three years of disconnection due to Covid-19 did not lead the group to disband, but reconnections, grouping, and more plans are underway. Many members were eager to get back on the road and the club has already started small trips. The old group members are reconnecting and new ones are signing up.
The latest long trip was to Goa as it was an event ride with 50 members from the club taking the journey for the Ride-O-Mania event organised by Royal Enfield, where 20,000 riders from across India attended the event. The members rode to Goa and stayed there for five days, and enjoyed the event that had lots of good food and music. This event rebuilt the sense of brotherhood and community and brought all the riders together after a long lull.
Next, the club is planning a road trip to Nepal and Rohit himself went on a solo trip early this year which has mapped out well for other riders in his club. He is curating the ride for his club, and they would be taking off in April 2023. As for the solo experience, Rohit says, “I did a solo trip to Nepal earlier this year. The experience was so exciting that I planned to curate a ride for our club as well.
Solo is more challenging, but it’s a great way to unwind as it gives you a lot of time to reflect upon a lot of things. This ride was for self-realisation and to push myself. Everyone needs time for themselves, and for me, this is the best way. What better way than to do what you love? Solos are challenging as you are in unfamiliar places. You can push yourself. You need to be aware, be prepared for uncertainties. There are high chances that you will lose your way, but this would give way to new explorations, and even the machines are reliable, you have to keep everything in mind and that’s pure adventure.”
Technology has upped the game for riders and it has been an added advantage. Google maps and music is making their rides easier and safer. The accessibility of vlogs and blogs is making them explore new places. Old school riders beg to differ on this, as they say that to navigate through places on your own is in itself an adventure. As eras change and challenges differ the hunger to explore new places and ride out into the sunset will always remain the same. Accessibility for solo riders is a boon, as they can locate hospitals, service centres and hotels.
For newbie riders who are just starting Rohit advises, “Riding is extremely recreational, it is fun, but be responsible, be aware of your machine. If you are just starting out, first explore as a group, share the passion, there’s a support system that makes it a fun experience. Gain confidence and experience, then explore on your own.”

Recreational running is an increasingly popular method of physical activity, with participation rates growing annually. Although running offers several health benefits, it also poses a considerable risk of injury to the musculoskeletal system. The annual rate of running-related injuries ranges from 24 % to 65 %, with the most commonly injured joint being the knee. Among runners training for a marathon, the injury rate has been reported as high as 90 %. However, injuries can generally occur secondary to four main factors: musculoskeletal impairment, extrinsic causes such as running surface or shoes, training error, and faulty running mechanics.
Traditional management of running injuries emphasises factors that are easily assessed by taking a thorough history or performing a complete physical examination. However, as measurement technology has improved, our ability to capture running mechanics as part of a routine clinical exam has increased, as well as our ability to integrate this information into our clinical decision-making process. Clinical video analysis of running enables the clinician to characterize the patient’s running biomechanics, estimate the resulting joint and muscle loads, and identify aspects that may be associated with injury risk.
Lower-extremity running injuries due to slow cadence and excessive stride length are common. These can be remedied with manipulating cadence, which can easily be done in the clinic with the use of a treadmill, metronome, and a motion capture device, such as a high-speed camera, tablet, or a smartphone.
The following steps should be used to help runners find the cadence that is effective for them:
1. The runner will run on a treadmill at a self-selected speed for 1 to 2 min. Record running motion from the frontal and sagittal planes. Capture cadence using a metronome or smartwatch.
2. Add 5% to the runner’s self-selected cadence value. Set the metronome at the new cadence and have the runner run at that cadence for 1 to 2 min.
3. If symptoms are not improved, try increasing cadence an additional 5%. Record the runner from the frontal and sagittal planes at this new cadence.
4. Review the film with the runner if using a tablet/smartphone. At a higher cadence, the stride length shortens, foot strikes occur closer to the hips with the knee more flexed and the hip less adducted. This visual feedback can be used to manipulate gait. Many programs exist for the patient to download music of the preferred cadence like iTunes, and smartphone applications, such as Spotify Running, which will only play music that is set to a specific cadence.
Manage running related injuries and all other musculoskeletal issues under the professional care of Dr Richa Singh’s Perfect Bounce physiotherapy clinic.

Bangalore Trade Association (BTA) completed 2022 on a rewarding note, fulfilling the dream of their employees who have been toiling behind the counters of the stores. Appreciating their hard work and years of loyalty, they celebrated Retail Employees Day on the 12th of December 2022.
Mr. Vijayashekar Ravi Deepam – Director of Deepam Silks, Elected President of Bangalore Trade Association, a registered trade association that was established in 1899 making it 125 years for the association, informs, “The association and 40 shopkeepers joined together and made special arrangements for the Retail Employees Day, as the employees behind the counter do a thankless job, and making them feel special and celebrating them was something the association wanted to fulfill.
We asked the shopkeepers to nominate two names of employees who have done commendable work throughout the year for the Best Employee Award, and also for Best Sales. Certificates and mementos
were awarded and all were appreciated for their effort at the stores and for being selfless in their service.”
The Guest of Honour for the event was Mr. Manohar D. Chatlani – Managing Director of Soch Stores, who was very moved by the celebration and gave an emotional speech. Additionally, Dr. M.A. Saleem, IPS, Special Commissioner Traffic who has been doing a commendable job, graced the occasion with his presence and released balloons as a celebratory gesture. He also gave an insightful speech encouraging the employees and appreciating the association for celebrating such a wonderful and meaningful day.
The association announced a Special Insurance Policy for the employees, with a monthly scheme of Rs. 200, the employees get medical insurance, Rs. 2000 hospital insurance free, Rs. 3000 accidental insurance free, and up to 30% discount on medicines from 12 clinics across Bangalore.
The employees from different stores showcased their talents in the cultural and entertainment segment, and the best performances were awarded for their talents.
The MG Road Shopping Festival is being held from January 1st to 17th, the association is lighting up and brightening MG Road. 18 stores and shopkeepers are taking part in the festival where they will be offers galore. The offers are mentioned in the coupon that will be handed out to the shoppers, and they can shop, eat and enjoy the best bargains and deals the festival is offering. Silk stores, jewellery stores, wedding wear stores, and some of the favourite restaurants can be found on the coupon. Mr. Vijayashekar Ravi Deepam is a man of high ambition, he is already putting forth new ideas, and wants to do a Bangalore Shopping Festival similar to Dubai Shopping Festival, with Commercial Street, Brigade Road, and other shopping areas joining the bandwagon and making Bangalore the biggest shopping hub in South India. MG Road’s ambience is different during the holiday season, and the retail spirit seems to be extraordinary. After the lost Covid years, the business has come back with vigour and the stores on MG Road are busy again with tourists and locals shopping and walking around. The festival is a bonus for every Bangalorean. Grab your coupons and head to the festival and enjoy your new year with some retail therapy and good discounts.
