Location

Wat Gate, the area of Chiang Mai surrounding 137 Pillars House, was formerly designated to foreigners. The house occupies a prime address close to the Ping River and adjacent to the Wat Gate Khar Rham Temple for which the community is named. The traditional Thai temple complex of multiple pagodas and living quarters for six full time and six novice monks is also home to Wat Gate Khar Rham Museum, founded by former 137 Pillars House owner Jack Bain and filled with quirky memorabilia from ancient farm tools and pottery to ornate court clothing of the Chiang Mai royalty plus an extensive collection of historic photographs.

To the north of the temple sits a teakwood house that belonged to the former Thai Prime Minister, Dr. Sukij Nimmanhemin and just south of that, another teak residence almost 100 years old and built in European style with fine, slatted shutters affording both shade and air. Testament to the diversity of foreigners who gravitated to this area, one also finds the Sikh community temple behind Wat Gate from the same period as the European architecture. A pedestrian footbridge known as Sapan Khaek crosses to the fresh fruits and vegetables of Warorot Market at the spot where the Lanna Kings long ago erected their royal jetty and boathouse.

Grounds & Gardens

Tropical Northern Thai forest surrounded, in fact nearly enveloped, the 137 Pillars House when we first laid eyes on these naturally lush grounds. Our landscape team has preserved those existing Lady Palm and Mimosa trees to honor the site’s unique heritage while creating shade and breeze for our guests along well lit stone walkways. Gardens blossom throughout the property. We especially await the orange Flamboyant flowers that announce the Thai New Year every April. Look for them and other indigenous blooms along the original elephant path, our favorite outdoor reminder of 137 Pillars House’s storied past. In our Market Garden, 137 Pillars House Master Gardener takes full advantage of Chiang Mai’s cooler climate to grow organic herbs and vegetables for our guests. He collaborates directly with the Executive Chef and is available upon request to guide our guests through this edible landscape. We invite you to satisfy spontaneous cravings by picking fruit from these verdant vines as you please.
