LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Claire Trickett Somehow December has managed to creep up on us and it’s time to reflect on the year gone by. Despite global challenges in the tourism industry as a whole, &Beyond has enjoyed a steady, successful and satisfying year. We refurbished
and proudly relaunched some of our most iconic safari camps and lodges, which have since gone on to win prestigious awards and gain international coverage. We embarked on a second, far more ambitious, phase of our Rhinos Without Borders project (together with Great Plains Conservation) and next year you will read all about our adventures as we start moving the 100 rhino to safety. And of course, we have continued to share the most incredible wildlife sightings and unforgettable moments with our guests to ensure that they live out the extraordinary experiences on their bucket lists.
Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, safe and relaxing festive season and here’s to a new year filled with adventure, risk-taking and time with loved ones. I’ll leave you with one of my favourite toasts… “May all your joys be pure joys, and all your pain champagne.”
What’s on your bucket list? Let’s make 2015 the year of the bucket list. Live life to the fullest, dare yourself to take those adventures you’ve always dreamed of, and most importantly take time out from your to-do lists to really disconnect from reality and enjoy the natural world for a while.
< TOUGHEST RANGER OF THE MONTH We’re not quite sure what happened to the third little pig… And we’re also not sure who looks more mischievous, &Beyond Regional Ranger Trainer Will Moss or his partner-in-crime ranger Andrew van den Broeck. If you have a funny wildlife photograph, entertaining story or embarrassing ranger photo that you’d like to share, please send them to claire.trickett@andBeyond.com. ^ ON THE COVER &Beyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge: serene, cosy corners amidst grand, imposing architecture where guests can quietly absorb the natural beauty of the Okavango Delta.

2014: A YEAR IN REVIEW AN ARCHITECTURAL WONDER IN THE OKAVANGO DELTA &Beyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge has without a doubt reemerged as the most architecturally unique and unparalleled lodge the Okavango Delta has ever seen. Our teams truly pushed the architectural boundaries to ensure that &Beyond Sandibe is the leader in terms of its cutting-edge design and light sustainable footprint. The sheer height and scale of the new guest area, whose structure mimics the tailbones and body armour of the pangolin, literally takes your breath away. Ascending a set of stairs, guests enter the lodge between the segments of shingled skin, reaching a raised, tranquil terrace. The vast area is split into three levels where guests can relax and unwind. The nests of the weaver bird were the inspiration for the guest suites. Designed for privacy and to emphasise the magnificent Delta views, each elevated suite peers out from a canopy of wild palms and fig trees. The overall feeling is woody and ethereal, with bright copper highlights. In summer, &Beyond Sandibe is all about outdoor living. Each guest veranda boasts a private plunge pool with comfortable day beds, a space that is also ideal for al fresco private dining. In winter, the suites become cosy cocoons warmed by a woodburning fireplace. Words simply cannot describe the groundbreaking design nor do any justice to the extraordinary beauty of this lodge. It really does need to be witnessed in person.

GUEST DELIGHT BUY A RHINO, JOIN THE CAUSE As the year draws to a close and the festive season begins, our &Beyond Safari Shops have the perfect gift for your loved ones; a thoughtful gift that really makes a difference. The rhino poaching crisis in South Africa is dire and this iconic species could be extinct as early as 2020. That is just five years away, which is why &Beyond and Great Plains Conservation have joined forces with our Rhinos Without Borders project, which aims to translocate up to 100 rhino to the safe haven of Botswana. To help fund a muchneeded translocation of this scale, we have launched a number of fundraising initiatives, two of which are ideal for holiday season gift-giving. Children love the soft rhino toy, which also comes with its own cosy fleece blanket. In fact, our rangers have a soft spot for them too and take them on every game drive to help spread awareness for Rhinos Without Borders. Guests are encouraged to purchase their own rhino and post photos of it on social media using #RhinosWithoutBorders.
We also have an elegant range of ceramic rhinos that were hand painted exclusively for &Beyond by Zimbabwean fine artist Clement Mkhize. These limited edition pieces have a view of the Okavango Delta painted on the side of each rhino. There are four different sizes to choose from, or you can buy the whole crash of four rhino.
These rhino gifts are available in the Safari Shops at all of our &Beyond lodges in South Africa and Botswana and they can also be ordered on guestshopping@andBeyond.com. Proceeds from the sale of both items will go directly towards our Rhinos Without Borders project of hope. Together, we can save this species from extinction. 17

GUEST DELIGHT BEST FROM THE GUEST Our goal with each and every guest, quite simply, is to welcome them as friends, spoil them with unexpected surprises, create lifelong memories and ensure that they leave feeling like one of the family. Our guests really do say it best and we absolutely love hearing from them about their &Beyond experience. If you would like to share your own &Beyond story, please send your comments to claire.trickett@andBeyond.com.
“What can I say … another FABULOUS trip!! Great camps and great people! It was wonderful to see all the &Beyond people from past trips. It was like going home!!”
“Let me tell you that this was the best time of my life at &Beyond Kichwa Tembo. We loved it and started crying upon our departure. We saw the Big Five during our first game drive and our guide Alice was great.”
“A day hasn’t passed since we’ve been home that I don’t think of our trip. I find myself looking at my clock throughout the day and imagining what everyone is doing in South Africa! Even though we considered this our ‘once in a lifetime’ trip, within the first couple of hours, I told Dave that this would NOT be our last safari. We’ve been to a lot of places and never really had a desire to return … until Ngala. For the first time in my life, I watched the wings of a bird actually flap and I sat in the safari vehicle and took deep breaths every day and savoured every moment we were outside. Our first morning after we returned home, I woke up early (for NY time, that is!) and noticed the sun was just about to come up and I took the time to watch it. This trip made me realise how much I take for granted in my day-to-day life. &Beyond Ngala taught me to enjoy life’s natural gifts and for that I am so grateful. I will never be able to thank the team enough for giving me a new appreciation for so many things. I know to them it may be just a job, but to me it was a life-changing event. I will never forget this small group of people who made this all possible. I want to bottle up the feelings I had while we were with the &Beyond crew and hold onto them forever.”

GUEST DELIGHT “&Beyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge was amazing. The staff were extremely helpful, happy people. It leaves you with a great memory having watched the Botswana people stomping, dancing and singing nightly. It was not so much a show put on for us, but a celebration of the staff enjoying themselves, allowing us to share a part of their culture. My picture of Allen dancing and singing will bring back warm memories of our visit. Michele and Reon are doing a great job and deserve kudos. They have a fabulous lodge, but their smiling faces and offers of assistance leave you with the feeling of a spoilt, pampered visit. Perfect! Very difficult to leave.”
“My trip was fabulous! I have told people since I have been home that there were absolutely ZERO snags in my trip. When I think about traveling almost 20 000 miles and staying in five different lodges/hotels it is really a testament to &Beyond that the trip was without a hitch! &Beyond Sandibe was absolutely spectacular and the food was hands down the best I have ever had in Africa − it was simply delicious. This was truly the trip of a lifetime for me; that is until next year when we do the Great Migration!”
“We were wined and dined and saw wonderful Africa. Botswana was beautiful and our adventures there will never be forgotten. We especially loved &Beyond Sandibe. It was an oasis filled with wonderful hosts, excellent game drives and welcoming staff. The lodge and our suite were magnificent and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. It was truly ‘beyond.’” “It was the most amazing and adventurous experience of my life. It will be very hard to have a time like this again during my lifetime. Definitely I will consider visiting &Beyond Phinda Homestead again. For the time being, I’ve already told my mother and sisters to consider it a top priority to visit Phinda Homestead in the near future … that is, if they are willing to experience something from this Earth that seems from out of this Earth.”

GUEST DELIGHT DESERT ROMANCE Guests Paul and Monique recently visited &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge in Namibia upon the recommendation of their son who stayed there last year and insisted that they too experience the magic of the desert. Lodge Manager Patrick Durkin (who usually manages &Beyond Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp in Botswana, but has been in Namibia to help out for a few weeks) caught wind of this information and decided to do some investigating. Detective Durkin delved into the lodge archives to reveal exactly what unforgettable moments Paul and Monique’s son had experienced and then ensured that some of these moments were recreated for Paul and Monique. Even though they didn’t travel together, this would enable the family to share in some really special memories. The couple was treated to a romantic al fresco dinner on the terrace of their suite, a quiet dinner for two in the lodge’s wine cellar and a beautiful breakfast on the worldfamous Sossusvlei dunes. Patrick’s pièce de résistance was a private and truly magical dinner for two under a million stars. Their table was surrounded by twinkling fairy lights in the shape of a heart and they dined on smoked kudu carpaccio with a Dijon vinaigrette, followed by a delicious East African lamb tagine with nutty couscous and fresh vegetables. Dessert was a decadent sticky date pudding with a brandy crème anglaise sauce. We hope that Paul and Monique returned home with memories to last a lifetime and stories to share with their son over a few glasses of wine.

KITCHEN SAFARI A word of warning … it’s probably not a good idea to read this chapter on an empty stomach. Our Kitchen Safari feature delves into the creative kitchens of &Beyond and gives you a taste of the mouth-watering meals and surprise sundowners you can expect while on safari with us. We are firm believers that calories simply do not count when you’re on holiday, so bring a healthy appetite and be sure to try everything. You’ll regret it if you don’t!
MAGIC INGREDIENT GRUMETI GIVES YOU GOOD REASON TO CHEAT ON YOUR DIET The overall food theme at &Beyond Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp in Tanzania is healthy, fun and colourful. Our brilliantly talented Regional Chef Trainer for Tanzania, Jonestha Moths, continues to guide and mentor the team of expert chefs at Grumeti to come up with fantastic new ideas for delicious meals that tempt the taste buds and boast a kaleidoscope of colours. CARBS DON’T COUNT For breakfast, a private platter is delivered to each table that is bursting with a selection of fresh fruits, cheeses, homemade preserves and so much more. A definite crowd-pleaser is the freshly-baked, mini breakfast loaf served in a small terracotta pot. Each day brings a different type of bread: sunflower seed and sembe; pumpkinseed; raisin and oat; or cheesy herb loaf, to name just a few. There really is nothing better than a warm piece of bread topped with &Beyond Grumeti’s signature banana jam, with a side of tangy passion fruit curd. FESTIVE, FUN & FLAVOURFUL The &Beyond Grumeti chefs put their own playful twist on the lunch menus. Some days, there is a pizza party in the boma, where fresh ingredients are laid out and guests are invited to make their own personalised pizzas. Once they have added the toppings of their choice, the chef will cook their pizzas to absolute perfection in the traditional stone ovens. Some days, there’s an interactive burger lunch where guests can build their own custom-made gourmet burgers on Grumeti’s signature beetroot brioche burger buns. Other days, guests enjoy personal mezze platters with the most irresistible dishes. Think Tanga prawns with sticky local rice, tender chicken skewers, sizzling stir-fries, or blackened tilapia in soft corn tacos. Each platter also comes with a wholesome salad and bread still hot from the oven. As you can see, skipping lunch is never a good idea. 24 BATELEUR

KITCHEN SAFARI BET YOU CAN’T SAY NO Even before you sit down to dinner, there is an array of tempting bite-sized eats to ward off any post-game drive hunger. From red pepper hummus boats and delicate carrot rolls, to chargrilled zucchini rolls or rice paper rolls with a honey soy dipping sauce … there is something for everyone. And the best part? They’re healthy too. Dinner commences with a homemade East African soup or a light, flavourful salad. Perhaps it will be a fresh watermelon and apple salad, a roasted pumpkin and olive salad, or a Moroccan carrot and feta combination, followed of course by a wholesome, hearty meal enjoyed under the stars. NO REGRETS You can opt for no dessert, but when the person sitting opposite you gets theirs, you’ll regret saying no. &Beyond Grumeti’s chefs create the most decadent, irresistible desserts that are the perfect nightcap. We’re talking ultra-rich dark chocolate mousse with a berry coulis and salted honeycomb, or a heavenly light and fluffy watermelon-rose pudding with a berry-lychee salad topped with a homemade Turkish delight. If that doesn’t tempt you, try the mini Tanga citrus Belgian waffles with passion fruit curd cream and a rum passion fruit sauce. Or for something completely different, the warm cinnamon churros with Amarula-kahawa dipping sauce are always a hit, as is the apple mandazi with lemon ice cream and a pistachio cinnamon syrup. We dare you to resist temptation.

KITCHEN SAFARI FOOD THAT IS AS UNIQUE AS OUR LODGES
Just as each of our 33 safari lodges boasts its own wildlife experience and its own unique architecture and ambience, so too does each lodge have its own carefully-selected food identity. The recent relaunch of both &Beyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp in Kenya and &Beyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge in Botswana provided the perfect opportunity for our chef teams at each lodge to revisit their menus and overall food experience under the brilliant guidance of foodie expert Neil Roake, &Beyond Group Training Chef Dumi Ndlovu, &Beyond Regional Chef Trainer for Botswana Amanda Collins and &Beyond Kichwa Tembo Executive Chef George Musembi. FROM GARDEN TO TABLE At &Beyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp, the wholesome, organic menus incorporate and celebrate the seasonal bounty of the lodge’s thriving shamba (vegetable garden). Fresh vegetables and herbs are harvested and meals are fresh,
uncomplicated and unadorned. The breakfast buffets are bursting with a variety of fruits, Kenyan brie, large gouda rounds, muesli, wholewheat bread, Kassler smoked ham with Dijon mustard, light pastries and a different fruit compote each day. The ever-popular omelette-of-the-day is always a winner, with combinations such as Kenyan brie with caramelised onions, steamed spinach and feta, or mozzarella with tomato concasse and basil. Finish it off with a sweet and sticky Chelsea bun, fresh from the oven and highly recommended! The spacious interactive kitchen brings a cheerful atmosphere to the lodge, allowing guests to see their mouth-watering meals being prepared, quite literally, from garden to table. The dining area overlooks a central al fresco courtyard where the lodge’s impressive shamba is located. Guests are encouraged to select the freshest possible vegetables of their choice from the garden (lettuce, spinach, broccoli, kale, tomatoes, rocket, chillies, chives, rosemary, dill,
mustard leaves, green peppers and more), then watch as the chef whips up healthy meal options right then and there. The lunch and dinner menus vary daily. Some days guests tuck in and build their own pulled beef or aubergine kofta tacos with all the trimmings, and other days there is a Caesar salad station complete with shamba lettuce, tender chicken, crispy sesame bacon, soft boiled eggs and parmesan shavings. Just a few of the many irresistible meals on offer include: butternut green curry with turmeric rice; lamb koftas with homemade roti and a tomato, onion and pineapple salsa; coconut and lime roasted chicken; Kenyan stir-fry; and Tilapia fish curry. &Beyond Kichwa Tembo has an air of classic safari elegance, where irresistible and healthy meals are shared overlooking the worldfamous, game-filled Masai Mara plains. It’s definitely bucket list material.

KITCHEN SAFARI
THEATRE OF FOOD At &Beyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge, the food is described as earthy, robust and deconstructed. It is simple, light and healthy and the chefs make full use of the fresh produce harvested specifically for the lodge by a local vegetable farmer. Each day, a different fruit salad combination is served for breakfast. One day might be diced pineapple, strawberries, kiwi and granadilla, whereas another day will be juicy guava, orange segments and pear. The breakfast pastries are a must: from sinful chocolate cinnamon twists and almond danishes, to flaky fruit crostatas and wholesome muffins. Those craving a traditional hot breakfast can have some fun at the interactive omelette station, which is a big hit with our guests.
Here’s just a small taste of what’s on the lunch and dinner menus: middle eastern meatballs with tabbouleh and deep fried chick peas, aubergine and sesame sauce; Cape Malay chicken skewers; coconut lemongrass fish with roast potatoes and vegetables; beef rib roast with red wine sauce, Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes; Moroccan lamb tagine; or halloumi grilled vegetable skewers. Hungry yet?!
Shiny copper pans, smoky recycled glass, rustic wooden boards, white crockery and abode copper serving spoons all create an elegant dining experience like no other anywhere in the Okavango Delta. It is a feast for the eyes and the stomach, not to mention the fact that you are surrounded by a chorus of frogs and the exquisite natural beauty of a World Heritage Site. Bon appétit!
The large open kitchen creates a theatre around the food, where guests can mingle with the chefs and discuss the recipes and ingredients. Lunch commences with iced crudités or a small antipasto plate (full of ingredients that change daily; think citrus roasted olives, rosa tomato skewers, chargrilled halloumi or avocado hummus with water biscuits) with deliciously warm ciabatta. The pizza oven is fired up daily and guests can assemble their own oval-shaped pizza creation or they can select from the delicious daily dishes featured on the menu.

KITCHEN SAFARI LIQUID ASSETS HONOURING A SOUTH AFRICAN TRADITION No safari, or sunset for that matter, should be celebrated without a refreshing sundowner in hand. At all of our safari camps and lodges, the afternoon game drive is pleasantly interrupted with a romantic sundowner stop where guests can stretch their legs and sip on the “sundowner” drink of their choice as the sun slowly dips over the horizon. Each lodge adds their own creative flair. From unexpected champagne trees and antique wine barrel tables hidden in the bush, to floating gin and tonic stations, sandcastle chairs built into the beach sand and sunset cruises on a traditional Zanzibari dhow … they are all magnificent and they are all unforgettable. In fact, many of our guests write to tell us that they have carried on the sundowner tradition at their homes as a way of remembering their unforgettable safari experience. Cheers to that.

FACES & PLACES NGALA: HOME OF THE LION (CUBS) Back in October, the rangers at &Beyond Ngala Private Game Reserve in South Africa noticed a heavily pregnant lioness scouring the thickets alongside the Timbavati River in search of a suitable den site. They kept a close eye on her movements and we are delighted to announce that the new mother has now emerged from her den for the first time with her four tiny little cubs. She tenderly carried them across the riverbed one by one allowing our rangers and guests to capture some extraordinary photographs. Allow us to officially introduce &Beyond Ngala’s newest additions. “Ngala” is the Shangaan word for “lion”, so this lioness couldn’t have chosen a better home for her newborns. THE GATHERING OF GIANTS Every year, wildlife and photography enthusiasts flock to Sri Lanka’s Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks to witness an extraordinary natural phenomenon: the annual congregation of over 300 wild elephants. Dubbed “The Gathering”, this yearly elephant migration has been observed for centuries and is the highest concentration of wild Asian elephant in the world. As the monsoon rolls into the forested districts from June through to November, the grand pachyderms disperse in search of a drier climate and migrate to the open pastures on the shores of the ancient Minneriya reservoir. The reservoir, which was built by King Mahasen in the 2nd Century AD, recedes during the dry season allowing lush green grass to grow in its place. The massive herds congregate on this feeding ground and can be observed frolicking, socialising and playing in the water. Think of it as a grand family reunion by the pool! The monsoon typically reaches Minneriya in October, at which point the herds continue their trek and move towards the reservoir at Kaudulla National Park where they will remain until the rains intensify. In November, they will retreat back to the forests. Riaz Cader, Manager of Special Projects for our &Beyond office in Sri Lanka, was fortunate enough to witness The Gathering at the Kaudulla reservoir and this is what he experienced.

CLASH OF THE TITANS A Story by Riaz Cader “There must have been more than 100 elephants split among two groups. The young boisterous calves were engaged in play, trumpeting joyfully and occasionally being an outright nuisance as the females continued to feed. A few large bulls moved from herd to herd, inspecting each female in search of a receptive mate. Much to our surprise, an enormous bull soon mounted a much smaller female and the pair began to mate while the rest of the herd continued to graze, undeterred by the spectacle. We noticed two other large bulls following each other, facing off and then backing away and repeating
the process. One was noticeably darker with a pinkish pigmentation commonly observed in Asian elephants, while his rival was brown, covered in mud and seemingly in better condition. Both giants were in the height of ‘musth’, a breeding condition whereby the elephant secretes testosterone from the side of its face. We could actually smell the unmistakable musky scent from several hundred metres away. Sensing a potential confrontation between these two well-matched adversaries, we headed off in their direction.
other, and suddenly four tons of enraged bull elephant unleashed itself against the other.
The facing off and backing down continued, but was growing in intensity and we sensed that a titanic collision was looming. Fights among bull elephants are extremely rare and really only take place when they are equally matched and in the height of musth. We appeared to have the ideal conditions for the perfect storm of elephant encounters. The pair squared off once more, this time virtually in front of each
The clash, which seemed to last an eternity, yet despite its ferocity was probably no more than a minute. Tranquillity was soon restored to the Kaudulla plains, as darkness was setting in. It was the ultimate faceoff between two battle-hardened warriors and one of those exciting, nail-biting wilderness moments that will be forever entrenched in my mind.”
The two behemoths were banging heads at full force. The lighter coloured male soon outflanked his opponent, who at one point was virtually on his knees and about to be turned on his side (an extremely vulnerable position in which he could easily get trampled and possibly killed). Fortunately he recovered and despite a comeback of sorts, the darker male backed off, conceded defeat and slinked off.

“We departed Mumbai and three days later, arrived at &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in South Africa. A long, but very worthwhile journey. Even as we entered the reserve, we were already amazed by the wildlife and our first hyena sighting. &Beyond Phinda is renowned for its cheetah and our first full day was spent with these beautiful creatures. We caught sight of a mother with her three cubs, then we watched another cheetah feed on an impala kill and we were captivated by an exciting cheetah hunt. Our trip had been made on just one day alone. We spent a few days at &Beyond Phinda Vlei Lodge. A beautiful lodge and our fondest memory was most certainly seeing an elephant drinking from the private plunge pool. We were fortunate to join two of Phinda’s wildlife researchers, Cilla Pickering and Axel Hunnicutt. Wow! What an experience to be able to spend quality time at a hyena den and get to know each particular animal and their nightly calls. It was truly something new for us and it was such a fantastic learning experience. We spent some time at &Beyond’s Inkwazi Ranger Training School and participated in some walking workshops so that we could track some of Phinda’s big game on foot. The next day there was another surprise, as we were flown to &Beyond Ngala Private Game Reserve for six nights. Our stay at &Beyond Ngala started with the best leopard sighting ever and ended with an incredible African wild dog sighting. One unforgettable morning, lions even made a kill right in front of the lodge. In addition to the most unbelievable South African wildlife sightings we had always dreamed of seeing, the biggest highlight for us was the people at &Beyond. They truly have a sense of belonging and the attention and care they lavished on us was impressive to say the least. The food was amazing and the rangers were very kind and humble, always ready to organise something for us so that our time was well spent and we could learn new things. Thank you to everyone that helped make this extraordinary adventure possible. We will never forget our time in South Africa.” ~ Sadhvi Singh and Harshvardhan Singh Hada 36 BATELEUR

FACES & PLACES MONKEYS AND MONSOONS Earth Day is an annual global celebration that honours our beautiful planet and encourages worldwide environmental protection. It is celebrated on 22 April, and on Earth Day 2015, the Disneynature feature film Monkey Kingdom will be released across North America. This endearing nature film follows a troop of monkeys living in an ancient ruin site deep in the jungle and was filmed in part in Sri Lanka. Toby Sinclair, who runs our &Beyond Sri Lanka office, was the Location Manager for this opus which was filmed over two and half years. In addition to Monkey Kingdom, Toby and his colleague Riaz Cader also handled the permits, permissions, logistics and planning for the upcoming National Geographic series Wild Sri Lanka, as well as the recently broadcast BBC Wonders of the Monsoon five-part series (now available on DVD), which was filmed in Sri Lanka and India. Our &Beyond office in New Delhi handled the permits and logistics in India. Between 1999 and 2002, Toby also worked on two onehour BBC documentaries in Sri Lanka: The Last Tusker (featuring the elephants of Ude Walawe National Park) and The Leopard Hunters (which is about the leopards of Yala National Park). Upon moving to Colombo in 2012 to help establish the &Beyond Sri Lanka office, Toby’s first project was to return to Ude Walawe to assist in the BBC Natural World production called Sri Lanka: Elephant Island, which was broadcast in 2013. Together, these fantastic nature documentaries give a much-needed boost to tourism in South Asia and will certainly help build Sri Lanka as a world-class wildlife destination. WILDCHILD “Our family safari was excellent. Our seven-year-old daughter absolutely loved it and this time totally appreciated it. She was the first one up at 5 am every morning, eager to go out and see more.” ~ &Beyond Guest Book
NEXT-GENERATION NATURALISTS
Our fantastic team of naturalists at Banjaar Tola Tented Camp in India recently launched a fun-filled, four-day WILDchild programme for the young safari enthusiasts that visit the lodge. This tailormade “I am a Naturalist” programme encourages children to explore their environment, discover the natural world and learn about the importance of conservation. Young guest Shourya was visiting Banjaar Tola to celebrate his eighth birthday with his family and he and his four-year-old sister Esha were delighted to take part in the four days of family fun. They enjoyed some short nature drives close to the lodge, where they observed small animals, brilliant birds and fluttering butterflies (Esha’s favourite). Long
guided walks along the river kept them happily entertained, as they collected leaves and feathers. Back at the lodge, Shourya and Esha were invited into the kitchen for a festive cookie-baking party with the chefs. They spent quality time with the gardener, discovering their green thumbs and learning all about the herbs that go into their delicious meals. They even visited a nearby community to learn all about the ancient tribal traditions of the region. Shourya’s birthday itself was a day full of adventure. It started with an early morning birding safari, followed by a jungle breakfast − the perfect way for a budding naturalist to celebrate. On their way back, Shourya heard a rumour that there
was a magical chocolate tree in the area. A treasure hunt led the children to the enchanted tree, where they overindulged in chocolaty goodness. The day concluded with a festive birthday dinner, complete with a performance from local Baiga dancers and a chocolate cake with pug marks on it. Needless to say, there were tears when the children departed their jungle classroom. But not for long, as they already have a visit to another one of our Indian lodges booked for the near future. Something to look forward to and young Shourya and Esha can bring their newly-acquired bush skills to impress the naturalists there. 39

WILDCHILD A SAFARI THROUGH YOUR CHILDREN’S EYES
Today, there is an ever-growing need for holidays that allow families to bond with each other and reconnect with the natural world. They seek quality time and meaningful adventures that will inspire them, teach them new things and help them to truly disconnect from technology, traffic and to-do lists. Guests Philip and Valeri recently travelled to &Beyond Ngala Private Game Reserve in South Africa with their little boy Tyler. They made use of &Beyond Ngala Safari Lodge’s exclusive family suite for Tyler’s very first safari. Although Tyler is too young to go on game drives, that didn’t stop him from exploring a whole new world at the lodge, his big eyes full of amazement as he saw warthogs, impala, nyala and vervet monkeys for the first time. Although he certainly wasn’t impressed when a squirrel tried to steal his biscuit! The &Beyond Ngala family pulled out all the stops to ensure this family had a fantastic time, even whisking them out on a very quick drive to the nearby riverbed where they enjoyed a private pancake breakfast. Just goes to show that you are never too old or too young to break the routine and get back to nature.

WILDCHILD LEARNING THE WAYS OF THE MAASAI &Beyond’s WILDchild programme not only aims to educate children about our planet and the importance of conservation, but it also introduces them to the local cultures, traditions and folklore of the area. Parents can relax and unwind while their children are happily entertained, or they can join in for some all-round family fun. At &Beyond Klein’s Camp in Tanzania, young safari enthusiasts enjoy time with the rangers learning how to identify spoor and droppings and collecting leaves, feathers and bark. They also join the chefs in the kitchen to help bake cookies and cupcakes for afternoon tea. But
it’s the quality time spent with the Maasai warriors that really gets the kids excited. From traditional spear throwing and shooting bows and arrows, to learning how to make fire the Maasai way and then proudly roasting marshmallows on that fire, the budding rangers-to-be and young Maasai warriors-in-training return home with a wealth of new knowledge and an appreciation for different cultures. Now that’s a million times better than a day in the classroom and far more valuable than the text in all of their schoolbooks combined.

LEAVE A LEGACY LEADERS IN CONSERVATION CONSERVATION KUDOS Simon Naylor, our long-standing Conservation Manager at &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, was recently bestowed the hardearned title of KwaZulu-Natal Game Farmer of the Year for 2014. Having won this provincial award, he now proceeds to the nationals. The well-deserved trophy, a bronze rhino which so brilliantly commemorates Simon’s whole-hearted dedication to rhino conservation, was handed over by Prof Thandi Nzama, Deputy Chairperson of the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Board. Simon has played integral part of &Beyond’s conservation and guiding teams for the past 20 years and says the ultimate highlight of his working career has been playing a key role in turning &Beyond Phinda into a world-class wildlife reserve, both in terms of tourism and conservation. Simon, congratulations on behalf of everyone at &Beyond. We couldn’t be more proud of your ongoing achievements.
AN ORIGAMI ARMY &Beyond safely translocated 6½ rhino (one was actually pregnant unbeknown to us) from South Africa to the safe haven of Botswana last year. The resounding success of this project was the main driving force that earned us our most recent conservation win at the prestigious 2014 PURE Awards. Given that the seven rhino adapted so well and continue to thrive in their new environment, &Beyond has initiated a second, far more ambitious, phase of our Rhinos Without Borders initiative, this time in collaboration with Great Plains Conservation. Together, we will translocate up to 100 rhino to safety next year.
Fundraising is well underway for the USD 8 million required for a mass translocation of this scale. If you, like many people, feel helpless and are wondering what you can do to help save this species from extinction, donations can be made on www.trevolta.com. These funds will go directly to our Rhinos Without Borders project. Any donation, big or small, will make a meaningful difference. For as little as USD 1, you can contribute towards this significant conservation project and in return, receive an origami rhino. Every donation comes with a different thank-you gift, from wildlife documentaries and pendants, to t-shirts and buffs. The origami rhinos are taking social media by storm, as everyday rhino activists from around the world join forces and post photos of their little paper mascots using #RhinosWithoutBorders. We
encourage you to join this rhino brigade and help spread muchneeded awareness. Speaking of awareness, we couldn’t have been more humbled when we saw what the concerned students at St Cyprian’s Preparatory School in Cape Town, South Africa did for the rhinos. Last year in South Africa alone, a devastating 1 004 rhino were slaughtered senselessly for their horns. The St Cyprian’s girls set out to fold one paper rhino for every live one lost to poaching last year. Our young rhino activists actually exceeded their goal and folded an astounding 1 200 origami rhinos, which is sadly the estimated amount of rhino we will potentially lose by year-end. What a poignant tribute to our Rhinos Without Borders project. The picture says it all. We couldn’t be more grateful and would like to extend our most heartfelt thanks to the principal, teachers and of course each and every student at St Cyprian’s for taking the time to fold each origami and take a stand against poaching.

LEAVE A LEGACY SUSTAINABILITY NEWSFLASH AN ENCHANTED GARDEN THAT GIVES BACK &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge overlooks one of the natural wonders of the world and our fantastic lodge team there fully understands the importance of conserving their precious environment for future generations. In 2004, a small tree nursery was established at the lodge, where the team could grow a selection of plants, shrubs, herbs, wild flowers and tree seedlings. Over time, the nursery has literally burst into life and is now a lush, thriving green oasis. Naturalist Hassan Nuru tends to the nursery each day, and for a small donation, guests can enter the enchanted garden and learn all about how the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge family is giving back to the land and surrounding communities. A small table is set up in this garden sanctuary, where guests can try some health-boosting stinging nettle tea and listen to Hassan talk passionately about his project. He explains that their generous donation goes a long way in helping to support the nursery and enable Hassan and his colleagues to regularly transport seedlings to plant at local schools. Hassan and his team recently visited the nearby Mokilal and Msigio Primary Schools to plant 289 trees. The lodge’s resident doctor, Yusuf Mtui, educated the young learners on how to care for the trees and explained the important link between trees and global warming. Since its inception, the nursery has enabled the &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge family to plant an astounding 54 000 trees in the surrounding communities and conservation area. A big thank you to all of the guests that have helped support this project and well done to Hassan and the team for paying it forward and helping to protect our planet.

DAKTARI FOR MAASAI With a massive population of 52 million people it is difficult to comprehend that Tanzania has a mere 250 dentists. Residents of these rural communities are required to walk long distances over difficult terrain to obtain any form of dental treatment and the standards of hygiene at those practices remain underdeveloped. Back in 2010, Prof. Dr Martin Jörgens visited &Beyond Klein’s Camp and spent quality time with &Beyond ranger Seleu Kedoki learning not
only about the area’s fascinating wildlife, but also about the local Maasai culture. Seleu took Dr Jörgens to the nearby Ololosokwan community so that he could visit the Ololosokwan Clinic, a ten-room medical facility that was built by Africa Foundation in consultation with the community. Dr Jörgens says, “A sign reading ‘Daktari’ that hung on the door to treatment room 4 had such a profound effect on me that right then and there I promised the
resident physician, Dr Obed, to set up a dental care station there.” Dr Jörgens explains that everywhere he went while he was on safari, he was struck by the tremendous lack of any kind of dental care and so his “Daktari for Maasai” project was born (“daktari” being the Swahili word for “doctor”) in partnership with Africa Foundation and &Beyond. This much-needed (free) mobile dental clinic is fully aligned with &Beyond’s 3C’s, which are our core company values of Care of the Land,

LEAVE A LEGACY Care of the Wildlife and Care of the People. With so many of the staff at our East African lodges hailing from local Maasai communities, this project not only supports the local communities, but also our staff and their families too. Being a mobile clinic, it also eliminates the need for people to walk long, arduous distances to seek medical attention. Dr Jörgens and his team conducted an initial trial run of their mobile dental clinic at &Beyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge, &Beyond Klein’s Camp and the Ololosokwan Clinic. This experiment proved valuable as the travelling dentists had to quickly learn how to make do without such essentials as electricity and running water, not to mention the heat, mosquitoes, tsetse flies and lack of dental chairs. This fully prepared them for their next mission.
When Daktari for Maasai returned for a second time, this time they were able to equip the Ololosokwan and Mayoka Clinics with surgical suction pumps and dental instruments, care of German medical aid organisation medeor. As the daktari treated our lodge staff and their families, of course word travelled quickly through ‘bush telegraph’ fuelling great curiosity among nearby residents. In just 14 days, Dr Jörgens and his team were able to treat more than 650 Maasai, including children from local schools. Daktari for Maasai continues to work closely with Africa Foundation in order to provide these much-needed dental missions bringing relief once, often twice a year, to patients complaining of ailments ranging from cavities and wide gaps, to root canals and severe cases of unsightly
fluorosis. On his most recent visit, Dr Jörgens brought a plastic surgeon who was able to conduct a number of successful corrective surgeries. Dr Jörgens says, “The thanks we got from the people of Tanzania receiving free treatment was indescribable and cannot be compared with any other experience in medicine.” On behalf of Africa Foundation and &Beyond, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Dr Jörgens and his incredible team of professionals (our German &Beyonders!) for helping us to care for the people of Tanzania. This is a fantastic project that we are so very proud to be associated with. Asante sana to our daktari. Images courtesy of Prof. Dr Martin Jörgens and Dr Axel Roschker.
BUILDING BRIGHTER FUTURES
Following two years of continued consultation and careful planning with Botswana’s Sexaxa community, Africa Foundation has committed to the construction of a primary school that will consist of a two-classroom block, small ablution and kitchen facility. Africa Foundation CEO, Francois Peenz, recently signed the memorandum of understanding with the Maun North West District Council to solidify building plans and the official turning-of-soil event was attended by Botswana government officials, Africa Foundation and &Beyond. The children of Sexaxa currently walk up to 10 km every day to attend schools in the neighbouring Matlapana community. This of course exposes the young learners to many unwanted risks, resulting in a high dropout rate. By providing Sexaxa with its own school, Africa Foundation is helping build brighter futures for these children. Over time, more phases will be added to the project to incorporate the construction of additional classrooms. Well done to Africa Foundation and the &Beyond Maun Office for all of your hard work in getting this fantastic project off the ground. Watch this space for updates on the construction progress of Sexaxa Primary School.

The pangolin is a solitary creature. One of the most secretive mammals in the African bush, it sleeps during the day and emerges at night to extract insects from their nests with its long, sticky tongue. The animal’s cautious nature and its unique covering of overlapping scales have made it a rare delight to spot in the wild. Visitors to the &Beyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge must surely experience a similar frisson when they arrive at their destination: a reimagined gem in the shape of a giant pangolin that is set to become one of the iconic designs of the Okavango Delta. Sandibe is not a new lodge. The original architect Nick Plewman was invited back to rework the site he’d designed 16 years before, and this time he was joined by UK architects Michaelis Boyd Associates as well as decor, design and hospitality specialists Fox Browne Creative. Chris Browne of Fox Browne had also been involved before, furnishing the original lodge. This dream team was perfectly positioned to update the &Beyond group’s flagship lodge. Situated in a private concession area in the Okavango Delta, Sandibe is adjacent to the wildlife-rich Moremi Game Reserve. Guests are spoilt for choice with the best of swamp and dry-land game viewing on their doorstep. Nick says the team chose the pangolin as their design motif because of that creature’s elusive nature and its ability to curl into its own protective carapace. The overlapping scales are evident both in the form and construction of the main guest areas, with the building’s skeleton clad in a wooden skin of shingles and timber. The shingles were painstakingly set in place, which was by no means easy to execute. Sandibe was architect Alex Michaelis’s first foray into African design, and an ambitious one at that. He has high praise for the local contractors and for the manner in which the design came together despite numerous setbacks and challenges. “This would have

The dramatic arrival at Sandibe. Diffused and hidden lighting plays an important role in setting the mood at the lodge and creates a sense of anticipation as guests head for the greatest design surprise of their lives.

Clockwise from top left: The elevated viewing deck follows the same organic lines as the rest of the lodge, as do many of the furniture pieces. All the furniture was sourced in South Africa and shipped to Botswana. The wooden shingles used to clad the building and the roof are all differently shaped. The Sandibe menu, executed by chef Joshua Segokgo, is organic and deconstructed in its flavours. Sandibe is situated in some of the best gameviewing territory in the Delta.
been a difficult project in London, never mind in the middle of Botswana,” he says. The team pays tribute to their contractor on the ground, Adriaan van der Merwe of Lodge Builders Botswana, who stayed beside the pangolin until it was completed, and engineers Garry Sheard and Case Bakker of De Villiers Sheard, who were instrumental in ensuring the structural integrity of the building. Alex believes one of the most inspired aspects of the design is the fact that all the guest suites have been elevated to allow for the best game viewing possible. And in line with regulations and the contemporary design movement, the new Sandibe has a much lighter footprint than the old one. A solar panel farm provides electricity, no cement was used, and every aspect has been designed and selected with sustainability in mind. Sandibe may make one hell of a design statement but it is very sympathetic to the landscape. Says Alex: “She is going to age very gracefully. When all that timber starts to turn grey, the lodge will simply meld into the landscape.” The hospitality also reflects the lodge’s understated luxury. Fox Browne Creative has played an important role in identifying the tone and guest experience at the &Beyond lodges, with interior and culinary details at Sandibe carrying that subtle yet stylish Fox Browne touch. In the process of creating an iconic space that would feature in glossy design magazines, it must be tempting to get carried away and overdo the details. But the creative team knew when to stop and have left Sandibe with an uncluttered sense of luxury that is quite breath-taking. Copper finishes gleam in the glow cast by hidden strip lighting. Old Sandibe’s door handles have found new life in a dramatic decor installation. A handful of accent pieces such as the curving bar and the collapsed tree server render the space unforgettable. There are no over-the-top gimmicks, just one absolutely-out-of-thisworld design. • Architect Nick Plewman: plewmanarchitects.co.za • Chris Browne and Deborah Fox of FoxBrowne Creative: foxbrowne.com • michaelisboyd.com • De Villiers Sheard: devs.co.za • Book online at andbeyond.com • andbeyond.com/sandibe-okavangosafari-lodge

The nature-inspired lines of the sandibe architecture are seldom straight. The arched wooden beams that form the skeleton of the structure were bent, not cut, into shape by carpenters in Mpumalanga, south africa and then shipped to the site in Botswana.

American actress Kerry Washington and her husband spent their honeymoon on the romantic barefoot beach paradise of &Beyond Mnemba Island. Kerry is the lead actress in the “Scandal” television series (aka “The Fixer” in South Africa) and the premier episode of the series’ fourth season opened with Kerry on a beach on a private island off the coast of Zanzibar, where she had escaped with her lover. Great to see that her time in paradise was such an inspiration.

FUN SIDE CAUGHT IN THE ACT If you haven’t heard of the hitchhiking genet, then do yourself a favour and google it. Hidden camera traps managed to capture entertaining photos of the little guy hitching a ride on the backs of buffalo and even rhino. In honour of this sneaky little feline, we have started a new column called “Caught in the Act”, to showcase entertaining wildlife photos from our rangers and guests. Do you have a funny photo of an animal caught in the act? If you would like it featured in this column, please send it to claire.trickett@andBeyond.com.
