Our Destinations
The Pandaw story The old Irrawaddy Flotilla Company was revived in 1995 by Burma historian Paul Strachan, who discovered an original Clyde-built steamer called Pandaw, and undertook its restoration. Thus Pandaw was born and a unique concept and style of river cruising was created. We were the first since the Second World War to offer pioneering cruises on Burma‘s spectacular Irrawaddy River, reaching Bhamo, one thousand miles from the sea, and went on to be a first on the stunningly attractive Chindwin River. The Irrawaddy Flotilla Company was established by Scots merchants in 1865. By the 1920s the company ran over 650 vessels on the rivers of Burma. It had become the largest privately owned fleet of ships in the world. Mainly paddle steamers, the largest class of vessels were 350ft long and licensed for 4,000 passengers. In 1942 the fleet in its entirety was scuppered as an Act of Denial when the Japanese invaded. In 2003 we took our Pandaw concept to the Mekong River in Indochina. Here, the Pandaws broke the seemingly impenetrable river border between two very different countries. In high water our vessels accomplished the first cross navigation of the Tonle Sap, an inland sea previously un-navigated by larger vessels.

port of Saigon, through the vast delta so rich in human life and endeavour, to travel along the main channel into the rich countryside of Cambodia. With a full day in charming Phnom Penh we then explore remoter waterways as we progress to the great monuments of Angkor.
Pandaw run expeditions on three great South-East Asian rivers: Burma, on the Irrawaddy and Chindwin Rivers and through Cambodia and Vietnam on the Mekong River. These three great rivers traverse mountains, forests, jungles and plains. Along their banks are the vestiges of lost civilizations and vibrant contemporary societies. Any Pandaw expedition contains a stimulating mix of history, art and culture whilst exploring modern day life. At the same time, on a Pandaw you will penetrate deep into the interiors of these little developed countries and explore a pristine eco environments unreachable by anything other than a river boat.
Mekong River There can be no tapestry of river life as fascinating and varied as the River Mekong. Indeed there can be no more striking a cultural contrast as that between the bustling Vietnam delta and the tranquility of Cambodia. We pass from the vibrant French colonial
Burma Most of the population live in three great river valleys encircled by impenetrable horseshoes of mountains. River life dominates the country and still to this day forms the main system of transportation, irrigation and from its rich fishing grounds the principal protein source for the majority of the population. In the river valleys two millennia of Buddhist art, architecture and archaeology survive, including the 3000 standing monuments at Pagan. There is no other Asian country with so vast and varied a range of cultural sites. Almost everywhere there are temples and monasteries, festivals and ceremonies. The Burmese are a deeply pious people and Buddhist activities dominate every aspect of life. The Burmese are also very warm and friendly people who since Independence in 1947 have suffered terrible impoverishment and deprivation. We do our best to support the local domestic economy and make sure our suppliers and contractors are small local businesses.

phones. Pandaw passengers usually want to escape from the tiresome features found in international business hotels. Many passengers describe life on board a Pandaw more like being a guest on a private motor yacht than a cruise ship. Where we go and what we see is intrepid in extreme. What you come back to is a floating base of discreet comfort, caring service and all the good things one looks for in life.
Pandaw‘s Excursions
and Mandalay. Our expert guides will accompany you on these explorations ashore or you are welcome to make individual excursions, as there have been no issues of safety or security in any of the ports or stops we visit.
Excursions ashore are key part of any Pandaw river expedition. These may be in the form of a good walk through countryside and villages. Further explorations by local boat go deeper. In Burma we often use horse carts and in Cambodia cyclos. We try not to used cars or coaches wherever possible and in some places only the most basic of local transportation is available, like at Katha in Burma where you may find yourself in the back of a truck looking for an elusive working elephant camp. On the Mekong we will spend a day and a night in exciting Phnom Penh; in Burma we need at least a day and a half in both Pagan
Life on Board Sailing on a Pandaw is essentially an outdoor experience. Whilst the staterooms are very comfortable and roomy, passengers prefer to spend their time sitting outside, on the promenade decks or on the vast observation deck above. Unlike other cruise ships every window (except port holes on the lower deck) can open. When sailing our passengers sit on deck and become absorbed by great panoramas as they unfold about them. Spellbound, one cannot help but to meditate upon the unceasing human and wildlife activity of these teaming water worlds.
Wining & Dining The Pandaw dining rooms are designed to open up along the sides and only at night do we close them up and use air conditioning. We know our passengers want fresh air not chilled air. The new Katha Pandaw, designed according to feedback from our passengers, has no formal dining room but rather open air dining on deck. We offer a great choice of local cuisine and exotic foods. We source supplies as locally as possible, given environmental health regulations. Breakfast is a buffet whilst lunch has a buffet soup, salad and desert table with the main course served at the table and dinner is served at the tables. Passengers who do not like hot or spicy foods are offered European alternatives and vegetarians are well catered for. Special diets may be catered for by prior agreement. Our chefs know that the majority of passengers want to eat the best of each country they pass through.
Your Stateroom The Pandaw stateroom is the most celebrated feature of our ships. Finished in brass and teak, the main and upper deck rooms are very spacious at 168 square feet (15.6 sqm). Much loved by all our passengers we have ensured that with each ship we build the stateroom remains the same. Our cabins do not have mini-bars, satellite TV’s, internet or

Chindwin & Upper Irrawaddy 20 nights in remotest Burma
The scenery on this cruise is spectacular and we are welcomed with astonishment by the many remote communities through which we passed. Achieving our goal of Homalin, over 600 miles from the Chindwin’s confluence with the Irrawaddy, we return downstream all the way to the ancient city of Pagan just below the confluence. Then we continued a further 700 miles up the Irrawaddy past Mandalay to the great 2nd Defile, just short of the out of bounds city of Bhamo. This is the most northerly navigable point on the Irrawaddy and gateway to China. Twenty nights on a river cruise may seem a long time, but the majority of our passengers on these expeditions are regular Pandaw passengers, and
happy to spend so long in the convivial atmosphere of a Pandaw. No two days are the same with varied scenery and diverse cultural sites. This expedition is the most popular of all our cruises and as we only run one a year tends to book out quite early. Note this expedition takes place during the Southeast Asia monsoon season which is the only time we have sufficient water levels to attempt these remote rivers. It may rain but not continuously. River banks may be muddy and slippery. This is a real expedition and the itinerary subject to sudden changes due to water levels or other local conditions.

From Pyay to Kalay
14 nights on the Irrawaddy and Chindwin This river expedition goes from Pyay (Prome) to Kalay. Pyay (Prome) is the first major Irrawaddy port to the north of Rangoon on the Irrawaddy River and Kalay-wa, the main port on the Upper Chindwin River. This monsoon cruise will cover the middle part of Burma including Pagan with its 3000 monuments and the culturally rich Lower Chindwin with its little known art treasures and early wood carved monasteries. At this time of year when the Chindwin is in full flood the river is at its most dramatic but be prepared for heavy rain with sunny interludes between downpours.
Departures:
16 Aug 2014 RV Katha Pandaw / 21 Aug 2014 RV Pandaw II
Itinerary:
day 1: prome and the anCient pyU Meet at the Chatrium Hotel in Yangon and transfer by coach to Prome. Visit the 5th-8th century archaeological site of Thiri-ya-kittiya, former centre of the Pyu civilization. We cross jungle and countryside to visit monumental Pyu stupas and the excavations of the former palace-city in this walled early centre of Buddhism. day 2: thayetmyo Fronteir post This pleasant colonial town once guarded the border between Royal Burmah and British Burmah following the 2nd Anglo Burmese War of 1855 and many of the buildings including the covered market date from this period. We visit the market, see the colonial houses and ride out by horse and cart to see the countryside and golf links. day 3: minhLa Forts and magwe In Minhla and Gwechaung we visit the two Italian
built forts constructed to keep the British at bay from Royal Burmah. We climb the Gwechaung hill for the view. In the afternoon we cruise on to Magwe where we climb the river bank and wend our way through a labyrinth of passages and paths to reach the magnificent Myat-thalon Pagoda. day 4: saLe monasteries We visit a number of teak monasteries including the Yout-saun-kyaung with its spectacular wood carvings. We also explore an area of splendid colonial houses. day 5: pagan We tour a selection of the 3,000 listed monuments at this World Heritage Site, Pagan.
make a quick trip to the Thanbodi Temple with its million Buddha images - a sort of Buddhist Disneyland! Beyond Monywa we enter the Upper Chindwin. The river narrows and the forested hills fall away to farmland we pass a number of attractive villages like Kin or Kanee where we can stretch our legs. day 8: mingKin Mingkin was rediscovered by Paul Strachan in 1987 and described in some detail in his book Mandalay: Travels from the Golden City. It remains for Paul the most art historically interesting site in Myanmar (more so than the now spoilt Pagan) with its Konbaung court style teak monasteries sumptuously decorated. Mingkin may be described as the Luang Prabang of the Chindwin.. day 9: mawLaiK Mawlaik replaced Kindat as the administrative capital but ironically the Myanma refused to move there from upstream Kindat. It was mainly settled with the company houses of the by the Scottish owned and run Bombay Myanmarh Trading Corporation in the 1920s and 1930s. There are many splendid ‘Dak Bungalows’ set around a verdant golf course. Mawlaik and the other towns of the Upper Chindwin can only be reached by boat so cars are few. There is a dreamy otherworldly quality to such places and truly one feels that one has travelled there in the Pandaw time machine!. day 10: paUngByin to sittahaUng Pantha was an important oil refinery belonging to the Indo-Myanmar Petroleum Co (Steel Brothers). We pass the mouth of the Yu River which drains the Kubu valley that provided the route for a Lieutenant Grant to march to the relief of the Manipur garrison when the chief commissioner of Assam was massacred in a local rebellion. Sitthaung was the final resting place of a number of IFC steamers scuppered there in 1942 in an ‘act of denial’ from the advancing
Japanese who were a matter of hours behind. We hope to find remains of these ships as we have in the past at Katha on the Irrawaddy. It was from here that the survivors of the Japanese invasion marched out to Tamu on the India border. day 11: sithaUng to toUngdoot Toungdoot or Hsawng-hsup in Tai, is an ancient Shan enclave which in British times still had a ruling sawbwa complete with palace and court. It will be interesting to see what has become of the royal family and their home and to see these Shan people so far from their Tai-Shan homelands. day 12: toUngdoot to homaLin We pass the Uyu River worked by gold washers on the way to Homalin, the furthest navigable point on the Chindwin for vessels of our size. Alister McCrae wrote of his visit there 1935 ‘I loved the atmosphere of quiet and peaceful living there. At night I could hear greylag geese as they came in to the flooded land around us from far away north’. Bird in 1897 says little other than that Homalin is the headquarters of a township, but has very little trade’. Until we get there and explore the place there is not much we can say! day 13: homaLin and retUrn downstream All day cruising downstream. day 14: retUrn downstream to KaLewa All day cruising downstream. day 15: KaLemyo to rangoon Travel 20 miles from Kalewa to Kalemyo the gateway to the Chin State for the domestic flight and fly to Yangon.
day 6: Lower Chindwin Cruise all day through the great Lower Chindwin plain...

Road to Mandalay
14 nights from Rangoon to Mandalay This rare expedition operates only when our colonial steamers return to Rangoon for an out of water survey, and is offered at a special price to cover our re-positioning cost. This two week journey covers just over 600 miles or approximately 1000 km. Four nights are spent in the little known Irrawaddy Delta, a fascinating area of wetlands covering over 10,000 square miles. In this labyrinthine water world, with its maze of creeks and channels, children learn to paddle a boat before they can walk. The expedition continues through a varying landscape - from the lush teak plantations around Prome to the desert country south of Pagan, where we visit a number of remote traditional villages offering a glimpse of a timeless Myanmar. We make a two day visit to Pagan to explore a selection of the 3,000 Buddhist monuments and spend time in and around Mandalay with its many cultural treasures and rich Buddhist culture.

The rivers you will sail on are subject to seasonal rises and falls of water level, in some places as much as 30 metres. Water levels can change dramatically overnight and a sudden rise can impede our progress upstream considerably and even prevent us from passing under certain bridges. A sudden fall can result in our being unable to get into certain places or go as far upstream as we would hope. Groundings on sandbars are not infrequent and are part of the excitement of any Pandaw expedition. Published itineraries are indicational only and subject to sudden change. In such events alternative itineraries will be provided and we do our best to ensure that if a stop is missed we make up for it with another stop. Passengers are thus forewarned and expected to be flexible and patient. River cruising in Asia can be a dramatic and adventurous experience not like cruising the controlled waterways of Europe or America. Note also that we operate in areas with little or no developed infrastructure and subject to the strictures of local officialdom. Be prepared for this and it is all more the fun!
Credit Cards We accept only Visa, Mastercard or Discover for settlement of all cruise booking invoices as well as charges incurred on board. No other credit cards are accepted. Any transactions over USD 10,000, will be subject to an additional charge of 2% and will be levied on the invoice accordingly.
