Since early 2013 the Ministry of Tourism has been carrying out the ambitious Tourism Promotion Program of the Colonial City, which includes a total of 40 projects for the reform, restructuring and integral embellishment of the old colonial part of Santo Domingo, from its streets and historic facades to its monuments and museums.

Panamá extiende su promoción en mercados de Europa L

a Autoridad de Turismo de Panamá (ATP) desarrolla desde 2011 una intensa estrategia de promoción turística en el mercado europeo, que incluye acciones de comunicación, relaciones públicas y trade en Francia, Alemania, Italia, Reino Unido, Holanda y España, que ahora se extienden a Portugal.

Europa es en la actualidad el tercer mercado emisor de visitantes a Panamá, luego de Norte y Suramérica. El pasado año, Panamá registró un incremento de 16,5% en la llegada de visitantes procedentes del Viejo Continente; un total de 169.542 europeos ingresaron al país centroamericano, cerca de 25.000 más que el año anterior.

Por países, España lidera el crecimiento con una cuota del 37,1%, seguido de Holanda (40,6%), Alemania (9,6%) y Francia (1,6%).

El incremento de turistas europeos es resultado de la continuada campaña promocional realizada en este mercado dirigida a medios de comunicación, touroperadores, agencias de viajes y aerolíneas, destacó la ATP. Esa dependencia señaló que en casi tres años se han logrado diez vuelos semanales de Air France y KLM a Panamá y vuelos directos con Iberia desde Madrid durante cinco días a la semana.

Panamá recibió en 2013 un total de 2,2 millones de turistas internacionales, un crecimiento de 5,6% respecto a 2012, e ingresó por ese concepto unos 3.300 millones de dólares (+8%).

De acuerdo con la ATP, la estancia media de los visitantes aumentó a 9,3 días y el gasto medio diario fue de 162 dólares. •

Panama Extends its Promotion in European Markets The Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) has been carrying out since 2011 an intense tourism promotion strategy in the European market, which includes communication actions, public and trade relations in France, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom, Holland and Spain, and now it is being extended to Portugal.

Europe is currently the third market issuing visitors to Panama, after North America and South America. Last year, Panama registered a 16.5% increase in tourist arrivals from Europe; a total of 169,542 Europeans entered the Central American country, close to 25,000 more than the previous year.

By country, Spain heads the growth with a quota of 37.1%, followed by Holland (40.6%), Ger-

many (9.6%) and France (1.6%).

The increase in European tourists is the result of the continued promotion campaign carried out in that market directed at the media, tour operators, travel agencies and airlines, ATB highlights.

That entity pointed out that for almost three years Air France and KLM have had 10 weekly flights to Panama and Iberia five weekly direct flights from Madrid.

In 2013 Panama received 2.2 million international tourists, a 5.6% growth as compared to 2012, and 3.3 billion dollars’ worth of incomes (+8%).

According to the ATP, the average stay of visitors increased to 9.3 days and the average daily expenditure was 162 dollars. •

Cruceros a La Romana crecen un 30%

El Muelle Turístico La Romana Casa de Campo, el mayor puerto de cruceros de República Dominicana, proyecta un incremento de un 31% en la temporada de cruceros 2013-14. Se estima que recibirá 158 buques con unos 350 000 pasajeros.

“Estamos recibiendo no solo más líneas y más barcos, sino que varias compañías –como Costa Cruceros, Aida Cruises, MSC Cruises y otras– están trayendo naves de mayor capacidad de pasajeros”, explicó el director comercial del puerto, Andrés Fernández.

El destino La Romana-Bayahibe concentra playas inolvidables y diferentes excursiones que brindan una visita memorable. Fernández

además destaca que el nuevo Corredor Vial del Este conecta La Romana con Santo Domingo y Punta Cana de forma rápida y cómoda, lo que ha abierto la posibilidad de realizar nuevas excursiones.

En 2013 han llegado al puerto de La Romana 109 naves con 252 932 pasajeros (un 59,66% de las 423 910 llegadas nacionales por vía marítima).

La segunda terminal de cruceros del país es el puerto de Samaná, con 58 navíos y 112 424 cruceristas en 2013. Le sigue Santo Domingo, que el año pasado recibió 35 buques de cruceros y 152 barcos (ferry) desde Puerto Rico, con un total de 58 267 pasajeros. •

Cruise Ships to La Romana Increase 30% La Romana Casa de Campo Tourist Quay, the Dominican Republic’s largest cruise port, is planning a 31% increase during the 2013-2014 cruise season. It is estimated that it will receive 158 ships with some 350,000 passengers. “We are receiving not only more lines and more ships, but also several companies –like Costa Cruceros, Aida Cruises, MSC Cruises and others– are bringing vessels with a larger passenger capacity,” the port’s commercial director, Andrés Fernández, explained.

La Romana-Bayahibe destination concentrates unforgettable beaches and different excursions that offer a memorable visit. Fernández also highlighted that the new East Road Corridor connects La Romana to Santo Domingo and Punta Cana in a fast and easy way, which has opened the possibility for carrying out new excursions.

In 2013, a total of 109 ships arrived in the port of La Romana with 252,932 passengers (59.66% of the 423,910 national arrivals by sea). The country’s second cruise terminal is the port of Samaná, with 58 ships and 112,424 cruise passengers in 2013. It is followed by Santo Domingo, which last year received 35 cruise ships and 152 ferryboats from Puerto Rico, with a total of 58,267 passengers. •

Dominicana, líder turístico del Caribe ¿Cuáles son los logros recientes y las expectativas futuras?

El turismo dominicano vive una época de gran desarrollo. En la temporada octubre 2013-febrero 2014, registramos un crecimiento promedio de las llegadas de turistas a los aeropuertos del país superior a un 8%, marcando cada mes un récord histórico por número de visitantes. Los turistas norteamericanos han crecido casi un 7% este enero y los europeos un 6%; los acuerdos subscriptos en las recientes ferias de Europa

proyectan aumentos sustanciales durante el 2014. La búsqueda de nuevos mercados ha sido una estrategia exitosa en Europa, tal como en América del Sur (+8,79% este enero).

Se evidencia así una aceleración de nuestro crecimiento que permite pronosticar un 2014 sin precedentes. Tales resultados proceden de la obra de marketing encabezada por el Ministerio de Turismo y sobre todo de la contundente política para el sector que está llevando a cabo el Gobierno del presidente Medina, reconocido por la OMT este febrero.

La terminación de vías turísticas neurálgicas en toda la geografía nacional –como el Corredor Vial del Este, que conecta a Santo Domingo con La Romana y Punta Cana– ofrece hoy rapidez de comunicación entre y dentro de los polos, junto a una elevada seguridad vial. Aún en 2014 se sigue trabajando en la viabilidad, logística y estética de todos los destinos.

Una reforzada ley de incentivos fiscales a los proyectos turísticos, aprobada en 2013, permitirá diversificar mucho más nuestra oferta hotelera, aumentando el número de las habitaciones y elevando nuestro estándar, para competir mejor con otros mercados.

La reciente creación del Cuerpo Especializado de Seguridad Turística, CESTUR, dependencia del Ministerio de Defensa, ha elevado el tema de la seguridad del turista a un asunto de Seguridad Nacional y ya está realizando grandes avances también por las acrecidas dotaciones de personal y equipos.

La producción de energía limpia y de bajo coste es otro sector que está atrayendo a una fuerte inversión pública y privada. El gasto energético afecta mucho la competitividad de los hoteles dominicanos y hay grandes expectativas en este ámbito. ¿Cuáles son las principales direcciones de desarrollo de la oferta turística dominicana?

Arturo Villanueva, its executive vice president since 1992 and president from 1989 to 1992, has been the cornerstone of the powerful organization for 25 years. Renowned for his vision and operational capacity, he has answered the questions put to him by TTC.

Dominican Republic, the Caribbean’s tourist leader Which are the recent achievements and future expectations?

Dominican tourism is living a time of great development. During the October 2013-February 2014 season we registered an average growth of tourist arrivals in the country’s airports of more than 8%, each month marking a historic record in the number of visitors. North American tourists have grown almost 7% this January and the Europeans 6%. The agreements signed in the recent fairs in Europe project considerable increases during 2014. The search for new markets has been a successful strategy in Europe, like in South America (+8.79% this January).

This confirms a speeding up of our growth that makes it possible to forecast an unprecedented 2014. These results are due to the work of marketing headed by the Ministry of Tourism and above all the resounding policy in favor of the sector being carried out by the government of President Medina, recognized by the WTO this February.

Playa’ estamos promoviendo el ecoturismo y los destinos de aventura, para valorizar de forma responsable nuestras extraordinarias bellezas naturales. Destinos como Samaná y Constanza-Jarabacoa ya son una realidad en pleno desarrollo.

En la Región Sur, se prepara la apertura de los trabajos del primer gran complejo en la zona de Baní y se está organizando el polo de BarahonaPedernales.

Puerto Plata este año continúa el proceso de rescate de su casco colonial y espera la inauguración de su gran puerto de cruceros.

La Ciudad Colonial de Santo Domingo, actualmente sometida a una profunda obra de recuperación, ya tendrá pronto sus primeros cuatro nuevos hoteles y se convertirá en el principal polo de turismo histórico-cultural del Caribe.

El turismo de salud tiene su centro en la ciudad de Santiago –donde se termina de inaugu-

rar una modernísima Unidad de Cirugía Robótica– y se prevé un próximo desarrollo también en el área de Bayahibe.

Especialmente estamos propulsando el segmento del turismo de reuniones (MICE). El Ministerio de Turismo está realizando varias iniciativas de promoción, como el SITE Executive Summit, que tuvo lugar este enero en Punta Cana. En esta edición de DATE, además de unos 200 operadores turísticos extranjeros, están presentes por primera vez unas 60 compañías especializadas, principalmente de EUA, interesadas en nuestras excelentes estructuras para conferencias. ¿Conclusiones…?

La meta del presidente Medina –10 millones de turistas anuales en 2022– es ardua y aún lejana, pero su primer año y medio de gobierno ha sido muy prometedor. Hoy la nación cree en este sueño y por él seguimos trabajando. •

Work is still under way in 2014 in the highways, logistics and aesthetics of all the destinations.

A reinforced law of fiscal incentives for tourist projects, approved in 2013, will allow for diversifying much more our hotel offer, increasing the number of rooms and raising our standard to better compete with other markets.

The recent creation of the Tourist Security Specialized Corps (CESTUR), a department of the Ministry of Defense, has raised the issue of the security of tourists to a matter of National Security and is already making great progress also due to the growing funds for personnel and equipment.

The production of clean and low-cost energy is another sector that is attracting a strong public and private investment. The spending on energy greatly affects the competitiveness of Dominican hotels and there are great expectations in that sphere.

Which are the principal directions of development of the Dominican tourist offer?

In addition to the experienced Sun & Beach formula, we are promoting ecotourism and adventure destinations to increase the value in a responsible way of our extraordinary natural beauties. Destinations like Samaná and Constanza-Jarabacoa are already a reality in full development.

In the Southern Region, the start of work is under way in the first major complex in the zone of Baní and the Barahona-Pedernales tourist destination is being organized.

This year Puerto Plata is continuing the process of recovering its colonial center and is expecting the inauguration of its large cruise port.

The Colonial City of Santo Domingo, currently undergoing an in-depth work of recovery, will soon have its first four new hotels and will become the principal historic-cultural tourist destination of the Caribbean.

Health tourism has its center in the city of Santiago –where a very modern Robotic Surgery Unit has just been inaugurated– and the upcoming development in the area of Bayahibe is also previewed.

We are especially boosting the meetings tourism segment (MICE). The Ministry of Tourism is carrying out several promotion initiatives, like the SITE Executive Summit, which was held this January in Punta Cana. In this edition of DATE, in addition to some 200 foreign tour operators, some 60 specialized companies are present for the first time, mainly from the U.S., interested in our excellent structures for conferences.

Conclusions…?

President Medina’s goal –10 million tourists a year in 2022– is arduous and still far away, but his first year and a half of government has been very promising. Today the nation believes in this dream and we will continue working for it. •

The works are achieving the visual and functional transformation of the colonial part of the city. Thematic tourist routes will be created and the zone will be equipped with signs and elements for interpretation.

Another project of great relevance is the Plan for the Modernization of Museums: the Alcázar de

Colón fortress, the Museum of the Royal Houses, Las Atarazanas shipyards and Ozama Fortress. Work on the museums will be carried out separately so they do not remain closed at the same time; the first two will be handed over in 2014 and the last two in 2015.

Last December saw the creation of the new Tourist Security Specialized Corps (CESTUR), an operational unit belonging to the Ministry of Defense, made up by chosen members from the Dominican military institutions.

In addition, the Strategic Plan for Integral Tourist Security was drawn up in consultation with the Ministry of Tourism and the private tourist sector. It is based on the training, modernization, and development of the operational and logistical capacity. This February the Dominican Republic Association of Hotels and Tourism (ASONAHORES) and CESTUR signed an executive agreement of the Plan to exchange information and coordinate actions to increase the efficiency of the tourist security programs.

Another achievement expected in the upcoming months is the activation in Santo Domingo of the Emergency and Security Integrated System –911. The structure, in addition to a complete fleet of vehicles, has a video-vigilance system with 1,300 cameras that are being installed in key points of the capital. The new number for emergencies will be successively extended to the entire national territory. •

a Organización del Turismo del Caribe (OTC), la autoridad encargada de las estadísticas sobre la llegada de turistas y sus gastos, anunció hoy que los visitantes a la región gastaron aproximadamente US$28,1 mil millones en 2013, para un incremento del 2,3% comparado con 2012. Esto fue sustentado por el sector de alojamientos que reportó un aumento del 7,3% en ingresos por habitación, según reveló Beverly Nicholson-Doty, presidenta de la OTC y comisionada para el turismo de las Islas Vírgenes de Estados Unidos.

Citando cifras de Smith Travel Research, una compañía estadounidense que sigue los datos sobre la oferta y la demanda para la industria hotelera, la Sra. Nicholson-Doty observó que los tres principales indicadores para el sector de alojamientos –tarifas por habitación e ingresos por habitación disponible y ocupada– en su conjunto, demostraron señales positivas de crecimiento en 2013.

“No hubo un mes durante 2013 en que estos indicadores fueran menores que los niveles del 2012”, dijo la presidenta de la OTC durante una rueda de prensa para dar a conocer el Reporte sobre el Estado de la Industria, compilado por la división de investigaciones de la Organización.

Además del incremento en los gastos, la Sra. Nicholson-Doty resaltó los aumentos espectaculares en la llegada de visitantes provenientes de Sudamérica y en los viajes dentro de la región, como prueba de que la industria del turismo del Caribe está dando señales de prosperidad.

By Frank Martin The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), the authority on Caribbean tourism arrival statistics and visitor spend, announced today that visitors to the Caribbean spent an estimated US$28.1 billion in 2013, up 2.3 per cent over 2012.

This was fuelled by the accommodation sector which recorded a 7.5 per cent rise in room revenues, the CTO chairman and commissioner of tourism for the USVI, Beverly Nicholson-Doty, revealed.

Quoting figures from Smith Travel Research, an American company that tracks supply and demand data for the hotel industry, Ms. Nicholson-Doty observed that the three main indicators for the accommodation sector-room rates,

revenue per available room and occupancy –all showed positive signs of growth in 2013.

“There wasn’t a single month during 2013 that any of these indicators fell below 2012 levels,” said the CTO chairman at a news conference here to deliver the 2013 State of the Industry Report compiled by the research division of the CTO. In addition to increased expenditure, Ms. Nicholson-Doty pointed to dramatic rises in visitor arrivals from South America and travel within the region as evidence that the Caribbean’s tourism industry is showing signs of progress.

“We see this progress in the record number of overall arrivals in 2013. This progress is manifested in the rapid rise in the number of visitors from South America who are coming to the Caribbean in record numbers. You can tell there’s progress

That was a lot slower than the 4.9 per cent rise in 2012. Still the Caribbean welcomed over 25 million stayover visitors last year, up from 24.6 million in 2012.

Ms. Nicholson-Doty said that the US market continued its recovery, with arrivals up nearly three per cent, but that Canada was flat with a marginal rise of 0.7 per cent, the lowest yearover-year growth in this market since 1997. The

UK and Europe, she said, were sluggish, with arrivals from the UK down to under a million visitors –a 1.4 per cent drop– and Europe overall down 3.75 per cent. Cruise passenger visits were up 2.7 per cent to 21.8 million.

“It’s evident that the atmosphere of despair has lifted and the Caribbean anticipates an improved performance in 2014,” the CTO chairman said. “It’s generally expected that global economies will perform better in 2014, with the IMF predicting one per cent growth across Europe and 2.8 per cent in the US. The demand for travel, therefore, will remain buoyant. As a result, tourist arrivals to the Caribbean are expected to rise between two and three per cent in 2014.”

Cruise arrivals, she added, are likely to rise by about three percent in 2014.

l Banco Popular Dominicano durante el 2013 otorgó unos US$ 1 891 millones de créditos comerciales a las empresas dominicanas y el sector turístico fue uno de los principales receptores de este financiamiento. Los créditos concedidos por la entidad financiera representan el 61% de los préstamos recibidos por la industria turística nacional en 2013, según registra la Superintendencia de Bancos. En menos de una década, suman más de US$ 1 400 millones en financiamientos otorgados al turismo.

El turismo dominicano y el Banco Popular guardan una estrecha y antigua relación que sigue fortaleciéndose. El Popular fue pionero en su entorno cuando en 2007 creó una oficina de Vicepresidencia dedicada solo a impulsar al negocio turístico, aún la única en el mapa financiero dominicano. Lidera Curazao crecimiento de cruceros en el Caribe El mayor incremento interanual en las cifras de pasajeros de cruceros en la región del Caribe, en 2013, lo alcanzó Curazao, según la Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO).

La isla del llamado Caribe holandés recibió a 610 186 pasajeros en 2013, lo que representa un alza de 41,4% respecto a 2012, seguida por Aruba, que fue el segundo destino en términos de incremento, con +25,4%.

El incremento récord de Curazao ocurre en un año en que, según las cifras de la CTO, el sector de cruceros tuvo comportamientos mixtos en la región, con varios países que mostraron alzas de dos dígitos y diez que registraron evolución negativa.

De forma general, el Caribe vio un incremento de 2,7% en los arribos de cruceristas respecto a 2012, con unos 21,9 millones de visitas de pasajeros a puertos de la región, que sigue siendo líder mundial en esta industria. •

Best Airports Awarded for Quality Services The Airports Council International (ACI) announced the world’s best airports for the quality of their services, chosen by travelers through a survey carried out as part of the Quality of Airport Services Program.

Guayaquil’s José Joaquín de Olmedo Airport was recognized as the best in Latin America and the Caribbean and also ranked second as the Best Airport for size, a characteristic it will consolidate with its expansion, already in execution, until it can receive seven million travelers.

It was followed in the American continent by the Cancún air terminal (Mexico), Montego Bay (Jamaica), Nassau (Bahamas) and Puerto Vallarta (Mexico).

Some of the air terminals that came in first place in the rest of the world include the airports of Cape Town (Africa), Seoul Incheon (Asia Pacific), Moscow Sheremetyevo (Europe), Abu Dhabi (Middle East) and Indianapolis (North America).

The survey is one of the tools used by the aeronautics industry in more than 285 airports worldwide to collect the opinion of passengers, from check in to the moment of boarding. •

Cruise Ships to Puerto Plata by Late 2014 Dominican Republic Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier García announced that the cruise terminal being built by the line Carnival Corporation in Maimón (Puerto Plata, on the country’s northern coast) will be inaugurated and operating in 14 months.

García said that “the works are being carried out at a good pace and will not stop, so that in

December 2014 or, at the latest, in January of next year, Puerto Plata can receive the Caribbean’s most modern terminal.”

With the conclusion of this cruise port it is expected that the arrival by sea of tourists to the country will reach more than 600,000 passengers a year. •

Baracoa, the First City, began its celebrations in 2011 –created as Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Baracoa on August 15, 1511–, followed by Bayamo, formerly San Salvador de Bayamo, whose settlement dates back to November 5, 1513.

This year (2014), Trinidad (Santísima Trinidad), Camagüey (Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe) and Sancti Spíritus, townships whose foundational dates are recognized as January 1514, February 2, 1514 and June 4, 1514, are celebrating their half millennium.

Santiago de Cuba will arrive at half a millennium in 2015 (created on July 25, 1515), and Havana will do so in 2019 –officially established on November 16, 1519 under the name of San Cristóbal de La Habana.

Some of these township’s zones are among those declared by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites: Old Havana and its system of fortresses, Trinidad and the Valle de los Ingenios, the San Pedro de la Roca Castle in Santiago de Cuba and the Historic Center of Camagüey, in 1982, 1988, 1997 and 2008, respectively.

La principal ventaja fiscal es la exención del pago del impuesto sobre la renta, que se ha extendido a un período de 15 años (respecto a los 10 contemplados anteriormente). Con la restauración de la exoneración del impuesto sobre las transferencias inmobiliarias (3%) se espera impulsar el mercado turístico inmobiliario. •

La playa La Laguna Dominicus de Bayahibe puede jactarse de haber izado, en 2004, la primera Bandera Azul del continente americano.

Desde entonces, muchas otras playas dominicanas han obtenido este galardón ecológico que resulta muy atractivo para los turistas. •

A total of 18 Dominican beaches have renovated their Blue Flag international certification for the 2013-2014 period.

The distinction is given by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a European NGO, through the Institute of Environmental Law of the Dominican Republic (IDARD). The Blue Flag program’s international jury carries out a process of evaluation of each beach, making sure that they comply with the demanding environmental requirements. The Blue Flag guarantees that the beach is clean, safe and that the quality of the water and services is constantly supervised. “Maintaining the Blue Flag certification,” the jury warns, “will depend on the permanent fulfillment of all the criteria of the program during the certification period.”

Bayahibe’s La Laguna Dominicus beach can boast of having hoisted, in 2004, the first Blue Flag on the American continent. Since then, many other Dominican beaches have obtained that ecological award that is very attractive for tourists. •

ste febrero, en Santo Domingo, el presidente de la República Dominicana, Danilo Medina, recibió por el secretario general de la Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT), Taleb Rifai, la Carta Abierta de Reconocimiento al Turismo, una distinción que premia al liderazgo turístico del país en la región del Caribe gracias a los aportes del actual Gobierno.

Durante el acto de entrega de la Carta, también conocida como Golden Book de la campaña “Líderes Mundiales del Turismo”, Rifai valoró los aportes del Gobierno de Medina para hacer de su país un destino único y destacado en la región.

Entre los principales logros de Medina, quien tiene al turismo entre las prioridades de su agenda de gobierno, destacan la aprobación de una

nueva Ley de Incentivos Turísticos para atraer a la inversión nacional y extranjera a través de amplios beneficios fiscales; la ultimación de la red viaria que conecta a los destinos turísticos de Punta Cana, La Romana y Santo Domingo; y la creación de un Cuerpo Especializado de Seguridad Turística.

Recientemente, Medina anunció al Congreso la aprobación de 34 nuevos proyectos turísticos (con una inversión de más de mil 300 millones de dólares) a ejecutarse en los próximos dos años, los cuales aportarán unas 11 mil nuevas habitaciones.

En 2013 se inauguraron ocho nuevos hoteles en Dominicana: cinco en Punta Cana y los otros tres en La Romana, Santo Domingo y Puerto Plata. •

This February, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina received from the secretary general of the World Tourism Organization (WTO), Taleb Rifai, the Open Letter of Recognition for Tourism, a distinction that recognizes the country’s tourist leadership in the Caribbean region thanks to the contributions of the current government.

During the award ceremony of the Letter, also known as Golden Book of the campaign World Tourism Leaders, Rifai assessed the Medina administration’s contributions to turn his country into a unique and outstanding destination in the region.

The principal achievements of Medina, who has tourism among the priorities of his government agenda, mainly include the approval of a new Law on Tourist Incentives to attract national and foreign investment through extensive fiscal benefits; the conclusion of the thruway connecting the tourist destinations of Punta Cana, La Romana and Santo Domingo; and the creation of a Specialized Tourist Security Corp.

Medina recently announced to Congress the approval of 34 new tourist projects (with an investment of more than 1.3 billion dollars) to be carried out in the next two years, which will contribute some 11,000 new rooms.

Eight new hotels were inaugurated in 2013 in the Dominican Republic: five in Punta Cana and the other three in La Romana, Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata. •

Turks and Caicos Islands develop medical tourism

The British Overseas Territory’s Cabinet of Turks and Caicos announced is looking to join its medical tourism dreams into realities.

The Cabinet had approved the membership of a Medical Tourism Steering Committee.The committee, which is established initially for a period of one year, will “develop clear policies for the operation of medical tourism activities in the hospitals in Providenciales and Grand Turk,” according to an official statement.

Turks and Caicos Islands Governor Peter Beckingham first announced the territory’s plans to develop a medical tourism policy in his Throne Speech at the beginning of January. That is part of a wider push by the Turks and Caicos Islands to expand its tourism product beyond the traditional hub of Providenciales.

Several other countries in the region have announced similar pushes to court medical tourists, most notably Jamaica, caribjournal.com informed. •

Y las buenas noticias continúan para Aruba, al registrar ya enero de este año visitaron el país 82 877 turistas para un incremento en las estadísticas de 9,4%; con mayor presencia de varios mercados latinoamericanos como Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Brasil y Venezuela. • Aruba’s tourist industry experienced a positive growth of 8.33%, surpassing the projections for the period.

According to the sector authorities, the so-called “happy island” received almost 980,000 visitors, a success involving the industry workers as well as the island’s in-

habitants, which are linked to tourism in one way or another.

The principal issuing markets include the United States, Venezuela and Canada, although more travelers arrived from Colombia and Europe, both markets with a close to 8% growth.

And the good news continues for Aruba, when it registered this January the arrival of 82,877 tourists, a 9.4% increase, with a greater presence by several Latin American markets like Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil and Venezuela. •

l pasado diciembre se completó el Corredor Vial del Este, la obra de infraestructura más importante de los últimos tiempos en República Dominicana. Esta moderna red de autopistas de cuatro carriles conecta directamente la zona hotelera de Bávaro, en el extremo este del país, con la capital Santo Domingo (en unas dos horas), comunicando las ciudades y zonas turísticas de Punta Cana, Bayahibe, La Romana, Juan Dolio y Boca Chica, entre las principales.

El Corredor tiene gran valor para el sector turístico por enlazar tres aeropuertos internacionales –Punta Cana, La Romana y Las Américas (Santo Domingo)– que juntos reúnen más del 85% de las llegadas de extranjeros al país; y también los dos principales puertos de cruceros de la nación –La Romana y Santo Domingo. Otro valor añadido es que el patrimonio turístico y cultural de la Ciudad Colonial de Santo Domingo resulta ya rápidamente accesible desde todo el este del país. •

Santo DomingoBávaro Thruway Completed Last December saw the completion of the East Road Corridor, the most important infrastructure work in recent times in the Dominican Republic. This modern four-lane thruway directly connects the hotel area of Bávaro, on the easternmost part of the country, with the capital Santo Domingo (in some two hours), connecting the cities and tourist areas of Punta Cana, Bayahibe, La Romana, Juan Dolio and Boca Chica, among the most important.

The Corridor is of great value for the tourist sector since it links three international airports-Punta Cana, La Romana and Las Américas (Santo Domingo) –which together receive more than 85% of the foreign tourists arriving in the country; and also the two principal cruise ports of the nation– La Romana and Santo Domingo. Another added value is that the tourist and cultural heritage of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo is already rapidly accessible from the entire eastern part of the country. •

Thanks to the great connectivity of the East Road Corridor, La Romana- Bayahibe destination has gained a strategic central location, being equidistant (less than an hour) from Santo Domingo and Punta Cana-Bávaro.

This central location is already favoring

growth in the traffic of its air terminals (+13.18% last December; +9.02% this January) and cruise ports (+30% during the 2013-2014 winter season); as well as toward its multiple tourist attractions, like Islas Saona and Catalina or Altos de Chavón. •

Dedicada FITCuba a La Habana, al producto de Circuitos y al mercado francés

L

a Feria Internacional de Turismo de Cuba, a celebrarse del 6 al 10 de mayo de 2014, retoma al Parque Morro-Cabaña de la capital como sede. Esta 34 edición estará dedicada a La Habana, como destino, y al producto de Circuitos, y tendrá a Francia como país invitado.

Principal plaza cultural del país, La Habana es visitada por la mitad de los vacacionistas que anualmente viajan a Cuba. Su Centro Histórico, en conjunto con el sistema de fortificaciones coloniales, fue el primer sitio de esa nación declarado por la UNESCO Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad. Estas y muchas otras razones validan que se le dedique FITCuba 2014.

Para el turismo de Circuitos la mayor de las Antillas posee características excepcionales, amén de una adecuada infraestructura. Su geografía de isla estrecha y alargada, una bien distribuida red de aeropuertos y marinas, la existencia de sitios de interés natural e histórico a todo lo largo y ancho del país y la relativa cercanía entre ellos permiten combinar, en una misma estancia, diferentes modalidades que coexisten en todos sus polos turísticos.

Cuba’s International Tourism Fair, to be held May 6-10, 2014, is again taking up its venue in the Morro-Cabaña Park. This 34th edition will be dedicated to Havana as a destination and to the Circuits product, and France will be the guest country.

En el invierno 2014-2015 operarán 20 vuelos semanales hacia destinos caribeños de sol y playa entre los que se incluyen, además de los ya mencionados, Punta Cana, en Dominicana; Cancún, en México, y la isla de Curazao. •

Havana, the country’s principal cultural hub, is visited by half of the vacationers traveling every year to Cuba. Its Historic Center, together with the system of colonial fortresses, was the country’s first to be declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. These and many other reasons validate FITCuba 2014’s being dedicated to this city.

For Circuits tourism the largest of the Caribbean islands has exceptional characteristics, as well as an adequate infrastructure. Its geography of a narrow and long island, a well-distributed network of airports and marinas, the existence of sites of natural and historic interest throughout the country and the relative proximity between them makes it possible to combine, in a single stay, different modalities that coexist in all its tourist destinations.

Choosing France as the Fair’s guest country has been a very relevant decision. This country for decades has been one of the principal issuing markets for Cuba and has left its imprint in the cities, crops, history, art and culture of this island. •

Connections Improve between Germany and the Caribbean Airberlin will implement, starting next November, two direct weekly flights from the cities of Dusseldorf and Munich to the Cuban beach resort of Varadero and to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

A total of 20 weekly flights will operate in the winter of 2014-2015 to Caribbean sun and beach destinations, among which are included, in addition to the already mentioned, Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic; Cancún, Mexico; and the island of Curacao. •
