avid Ruetz, director of ITB Berlin, in an exclusive interview granted to Travel Trade Caribbean, gave details about the event that will guide the future of the tourism industry with high-level debates in which resilience, digitization and sustainability will be the main topics.

ITB BERLIN 2022 will take place as a virtual event again. What will its advantages be for trade visitors and the interested public?

Resilience, digitalization and socially responsible tourism will be the key topics of the digital ITB Berlin Convention 2022 from 8-10 March 2022, where international top-notch speakers and tourism experts will address the most relevant topics of the global travel industry.

The Digital Business Day on 17 March will offer inspiration and encourage a wide-ranging dialogue with a minimum of effort. The virtual format makes it possible to attend from anywhere in the world, regardless of travel restrictions or how the pandemic unfolds. It is a catalyst for business networks and focuses on business and networking. It also gives companies sponsorship options.

What aspects were taken into account in organising the event programme?

Resilience has become extremely relevant due to the pandemic. Covid has shown that

only those organisations and companies can survive who prepare themselves for future crises and flexibly adapt their business models to a wide range of scenarios.

Because of the pandemic digitisation has massively gathered pace too. This especially applies to tourism. That is why we are giving eTravel ample room for a discussion on best practices and fascinating approaches.

Sustainability has also become a noticeably more important topic. More than ever, we realise that business cannot continue as before.

All topic headings will be presented by high-ranking experts in a wide range of formats such as keynote speeches, discussion rounds and pitches.

The Digital Business Day is one of this year’s new features, providing an additional opportunity to do business and forge partnerships.

What expectations does this initiative create?

For users, the Digital Business Day is a highly efficient instrument for exchanging views on specialist topics on a tightly scheduled day. They can already create and update their own profiles in the run-up to the event. The user-friendly platform makes it easy to network and update personal profiles. All users can list their business interests in advance, based on which they will receive contact suggestions so

ITB BERLIN 2022 será digital nuevamente ¿Qué ventajas proporcionará el evento a los profesionales de la industria y público interesado?

La resiliencia, la digitalización y el turismo socialmente responsable serán los temas clave de la Convención digital ITB Berlín 2022 del 8 al 10 de marzo de 2022, donde oradores internacionales de primer nivel y expertos en turismo abordarán los temas más relevantes de la industria mundial de viajes.

El Día Digital de Negocios del 17 de marzo ofrecerá inspiración y fomentará un diálogo amplio con un mínimo de esfuerzo. El formato virtual permite asistir desde cualquier parte del mundo, sin importar las restricciones de viaje o cómo se desarrolle la pandemia. Es un catalizador para las redes de negocio y se centra en los negocios y las redes. También da opciones de patrocinio a las empresas.

they can then exchange views and do business at audio-video meetings. We are also planning speed networking events so as to bring similarly interested users together. We will augment these services with a wide range of selected content from the convention.

What role will the convention play in reviving the tourism industry?

A significant one. There is considerable concern within the industry, which is in urgent need of orientation. The convention offers a comprehensive range of topics unlike any other format worldwide. We are gathering speakers of the highest quality. Viewers

can get orientation and inspiration for adapting their respective organisation to the current situation in the best possible way. After three days, the aim is to give them the tools for plotting their company’s future course.

Hybrid formats have proved their worth at many events. Will that be the case at ITB BERLIN too? What are the lessons learnt after two virtual editions of the show?

We also believe that hybrid forms of trade show and convention will dominate in the future. The world has adjusted to virtual formats in no time at all. At the same time, many people value face-to-face meetings even

La resiliencia se ha vuelto extremadamente relevante debido a la pandemia. La COVID-19 ha demostrado que solo pueden sobrevivir aquellas organizaciones y empresas que se preparan para futuras crisis y adaptan con flexibilidad sus modelos de negocio a una amplia gama de escenarios.

Debido a la pandemia, la digitalización también se ha acelerado enormemente. Esto se aplica especialmente al turismo. Es por eso que estamos dando al eTravel un amplio espacio para una discusión sobre las mejores prácticas y enfoques fascinantes.

La sostenibilidad también se ha convertido en un tema notablemente más importante. Más que nunca, nos damos cuenta de que los negocios no pueden continuar como antes.

Todos los títulos de los temas serán presentados por expertos de alto rango en una amplia gama de formatos, como discursos de apertura, rondas de discusión y lanzamientos.

El Día Digital de Negocios es una de las novedades de este año que añadirá una posibilidad extra de hacer negocios y establecer alianzas ¿Qué expectativas ha generado esta iniciativa?

Para los usuarios, el Día Digital de Negocios es un instrumento muy eficaz para intercambiar puntos de vista sobre temas especializados en un día con una agenda muy apretada. Ya pueden crear y actualizar sus propios perfiles antes del evento. La plataforma, fácil de usar, facilita el uso de las redes y la actualización de perfiles personales. Todos los usuarios pueden enumerar sus intereses comerciales con anticipación, en función de los cuales recibirán sugerencias de contactos para que luego puedan intercambiar puntos de vista y hacer negocios en reuniones de audio y video. También estamos planeando eventos rápidos en las redes para reunir a usuarios con intereses similares. Aumentaremos estos servicios con una amplia gama de contenido seleccionado de la convención. ¿Qué papel jugará la Convención en la reactivación de la industria turística?

Un papel significativo. Existe una gran preocupación dentro de la industria, que necesita urgentemente una orientación. La convención ofrece una amplia gama de temas a diferencia de cualquier otro formato en todo el mundo. Estamos reuniendo ponentes de la más alta calidad.

Los espectadores pueden obtener orientación e inspiración para adaptar su respectiva organización a la situación actual de la mejor manera posible. El objetivo es darles las herramientas para trazar el rumbo futuro de su empresa.

El formato híbrido ha llegado para quedarse. ¿Será así con ITB BERLIN? ¿Qué experiencias han quedado para esta feria luego de haber organizado dos ediciones virtuales?

También creemos que las formas híbridas de ferias comerciales y convenciones dominarán en el futuro. El mundo se ha ajustado a los formatos virtuales en muy poco tiempo. A su vez, muchas personas valoran las reuniones presenciales incluso más que antes; esto es algo que los encuentros virtuales no pueden reemplazar por completo. Por lo tanto, estamos aprendiendo de nuestra experiencia para combinar lo mejor de ambos mundos en el futuro. El mayor desafío del mañana será que las ediciones presenciales y virtuales ya no sean realmente separables, por lo que las condiciones serán prácticamente las mismas para todos. Todavía queda mucho por hacer, pero estamos en el camino correcto.

Para 2023 se espera realizar nuevamente la feria de manera presencial ¿Qué novedades traerá el encuentro?

Eso es algo para lo que probablemente tendremos una mejor respuesta después de los formatos que fueron planeados para marzo. Además de la convención y el Día Digital de Negocios, habrá un evento de networking B2B en el verano de 2022, respectivamente. Junto con destinos seleccionados, hospedaremos a compradores y visitantes comerciales líderes en mercados específicos, muy probablemente en Europa.

Después de eso, haremos un balance y estableceremos una base para ITB Berlín 2023. Como ya se mencionó, la feria comercial presencial también comprenderá importantes formatos virtuales. Eso se refiere especialmente a la convención, así como a las conferencias de prensa y presentaciones de expositores, por ejemplo.

Usted ha estado a la cabeza de ITB BERLIN por más de 20 años. ¿Cuánto ha evolucionado esta cita hasta convertirse en el evento líder de su tipo? ¿Cuál es hoy su principal fortaleza y sus desafíos?

Creo que la mentalidad de la industria ha cambiado drásticamente. Hace solo unos años, la sostenibilidad era más o menos un tema marginal, incluso solo se habló recientemente acerca del sobreturismo. La industria se ha vuelto mucho más crítica y consciente de sí misma. Busca formas de permitir que tantas personas como sea posible se beneficien de los viajes y, al mismo tiempo, cómo podemos administrar el planeta y los recursos de manera responsable y nuestra interacción con los residentes locales. Más allá de eso, nos enfrentamos a crisis como las pandemias y el terrorismo.

Anteriormente, el objetivo principal era aumentar el número de visitantes, a cualquier precio. Hoy en día, los actores de la industria turística deben tener en cuenta muchos aspectos.

Esa es una tarea genuinamente gigantesca para la industria. Entonces, para nosotros como la feria comercial líder en la industria, estamos aún más ansiosos por ser parte de este fascinante proceso.

more than before – this is something virtual encounters cannot fully replace. Thus we are learning from our experience in order to combine the best of both worlds in the future. Tomorrow’s biggest challenge will be the fact that in-person and virtual editions are no longer genuinely separable, so that conditions will be practically the same for everyone. There is still much to be done, but we are on the right track.

The expectation is that the trade show will return as an in-person event in 2023. What innovations will accompany it?

That is something we will probably have a better answer to after the formats planned in March. In addition to the convention and the Digital Business Day there will be a B2B networking event in summer 2022 respectively.

Together with selected destinations we will be hosting leading buyers and trade visitors in specific marketplaces – most probably in Europe. After that we will take stock and establish a basis for ITB Berlin 2023. As already mentioned, the in-person trade show will also comprise significant virtual formats. That especially concerns the convention as well as

press conferences and exhibitors’ presentations, for example.

You have been head of ITB BERLIN for more than 20 years now. To what extent has this trade show become the leading event of its kind?

Where do its biggest strengths and challenges lie today?

I think the industry’s mindset has changed dramatically. Only a few years ago sustainability was more or less a fringe topic – even overtourism only became talked about recently. The industry has become much more critical and aware of itself. It looks at ways to enable as many people as possible to benefit from travel, and how at the same time we can manage the planet and resources responsibly and our interaction with local residents. Beyond that, we are confronted with crises such as pandemics and terrorism. Previously, the main goal was to increase visitor numbers – at any cost. Nowadays, tourism industry players must take many aspects into account. That is a genuinely mammoth task for the industry.

So for us as the industry’s leading trade show we are all the more anxious to be part of this fascinating process and change.

The expectation is that the trade show will return as an in-person event in 2023.

World Tourism Organization For a Sector that Promotes Growth and Recovery

estoring confidence in travel, creating opportunities through tourism, and a safe and responsible reopening are among the priorities of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for the recovery of the industry.

As a result of several high-level meetings held in Geneva recently, the international organization’s secretary-general, Zurab Pololikashvili, enlisted the support of the World Health Organization in the effort to replace travel restrictions with policies that take into account risks, are based on reliable evidence and are adapted in a specific way to each context, according to www.unwto.org The visit to Geneva also made it possible to strengthen alliances in aviation, sports, education and the training of new generations of tourism leaders.

Furthermore, as part of the sector’s efforts to develop resilience and create opportunities, the UNWTO offers technical assistance

The UN specialized agency is also directing its efforts towards the advancement of the blue economy, of which tourism is one of the fundamental pillars since it plays an essential role in the preservation of the oceans. Examples of its actions are the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative and the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, projects to which it calls on the different industry players to join.

It is also worth highlighting the UNWTO’s commitment to the empowerment of young people. Hence the celebration of the First World Youth Summit on Tourism to be held in Sorrento, Italy, from June 27 to July 3. The event will bring together children and young people from around the world and offer them a platform to share their vision and hopes for the sector.

Vale resaltar, igualmente, el compromiso de la OMT con el empoderamiento de los jóvenes. De ahí la celebración de la Primera Cumbre Mundial de Jóvenes sobre Turismo a celebrarse en Sorrento, Italia, del 27 de junio al 3 de julio. La cita reunirá a niños y jóvenes de todo el mundo y les ofrecerá una plataforma para compartir su visión y sus esperanzas para el sector.

Caribbean Resilience The Dominican Republic it's the country in the region with the best results in the arrival of visitors after the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2. ◼ ISAÍRIS SOSA

N

ow that the light can be seen at the end of the tunnel, and that little by little the possibility of traveling is once again becoming a tangible reality, several Caribbean nations are optimistic about tourism’s signs of recovery, after two years of intermittent border closures and movement limitations that ended up seriously affecting their economies; in a region where the travel and hospitality industry accounts for around 90% of GDP for many of the smaller islands.

The Dominican Republic is one of the main destinations to visit in the Caribbean. According to data it is the country in the region with the best results in the arrival of visitors after the pandemic caused by the SARSCoV-2. It was already going well before the arrival of the new coronavirus, and ended up being crowned thanks to

its performance throughout this pandemic period, from which it emerged gracefully.

And in part, the success of the destination lies in a strong public-private partnership that made it possible to conceive a vaccination strategy focused on immunizing workers in the tourism sector as soon as possible, thus placing it among the first destinations globally to reopen its borders.

To such an extent that, already in mid-February, President Luis Abinader announced to the nation that the restrictive measures imposed by COVID-19 were suspended, and that from that moment on “it would be everyone’s turn to take care of themselves, responsibly, but without restrictions.”

On this path of resilience, Cuba is another of the successful Caribbean destinations in confronting the pandemic along with the reactivation of its tourism industry. Amid the gradual recovery of international

travel, the largest of the Caribbean islands expects to receive no less than 2.5 million tourists this year; this effort is largely supported by the high vaccination rate of the Cuban population, after immunization with its own drugs developed by the country’s biotechnology industry. The low circulation of the virus on the island has led France to place it in February among the few nations on the American continent included on the French government’s green list, which includes territories with insignificant or moderate circulation of the virus.

The Mexican Caribbean is also one of the champions of the reactivation in the region, since it has already managed to recover more than 80% of its tourist influx, thanks to the biosafety actions implemented by the authorities, which turned this destination into one of the first in the world to receive the Global Safety Stamp, a distinction awarded

asombrosamente uno de los pocos territorios caribeños que ha experimentado una de las etapas más fructíferas en la historia de su turismo; pues a fines del año pasado la Compañía de Turismo de la isla caribeña anunció récord de visitantes, superando incluso las excelentes cifras de 2008. De manera que es otro de los destinos de la región que llega fortalecido a la reapertura, sobre todo si se trata de hacer negocios, pues cuentan con el Centro de Convenciones más grande y tecnológico de todo el Caribe.

Jamaica, en cambio, es considerada por muchos como una de las mejores islas de la región para viajar en 2022, pues su «corredor resiliente» —áreas seguras para turistas— permite disfrutar del entorno caribeño sin hacer cuarentena y con unas restricciones mínimas de entrada, lo que la ha llevado a celebrar el arribo de más de un millón de visitantes internacionales desde la apertura de sus fronteras tras la pandemia, y acelerar considerablemente el ritmo de recuperación del sector.

En tanto, el impulso turístico de Bahamas se produce en un momento en el que las restricciones a los viajes internacionales comienzan a disminuir, impulsadas por un aumento de la vacunación a nivel global. También colaboran en este renacer el transporte aéreo programado a este territorio, junto al regreso de la industria de cruceros.

Por otro lado, muchas de las pequeñas islas caribeñas tienen pocas restricciones y han flexibilizado sus requisitos de entrada.

Con tales indicadores, la Organización de Turismo del Caribe (CTO) mantiene su optimismo con respecto a la reactivación turística en la región, pues durante los últimos dos años, los destinos caribeños han demostrado su resiliencia en la creación de estrategias para la recuperación, al incorporar protocolos de viaje actualizados y propiciar la colaboración con socios regionales e internacionales en las áreas de salud y desarrollo.

Una recuperación que se ha llevado a cabo al mismo tiempo que se garantiza la salud y la seguridad de residentes y visitantes por igual.

En medio de la progresiva recuperación de los viajes internacionales, la Mayor de las Antillas espera recibir no menos de 2.5 millones de turistas este año; empeño sustentado en gran medida por el alto índice de vacunación que presenta la población cubana, tras la inmunización con fármacos propios desarrollados por la industria biotecnológica del país. La baja circulación del virus en la isla ha motivado que Francia la ubicara en febrero entre las pocas naciones del continente americano incluidas en la lista verde del gobierno galo, la cual recoge a territorios con circulación insignificante o moderada del virus.

El Caribe Mexicano es también unos de los paladines de la reactivación en la región, pues ya ha logrado recuperar más del 80 % de su afluencia turística, gracias a las acciones en materia de bioseguridad implementadas por las autoridades, las cuales convirtieron a este destino en uno de los primeros a nivel mundial en recibir el Sello de Seguridad Global (Global Safety Stamp), distintivo que entrega el Consejo Mundial de Viajes y Turismo (WTTC).

Centroamérica lidera también las intenciones de viaje en 2022 en esta zona de América Latina, fundamentalmente tras la alianza con República Dominicana y el lanzamiento del nuevo catálogo de producto multidestino, que combina 8 países en el corazón de las Américas, y utiliza las conexiones aéreas dominicanas y panameñas como puente entre la región.

The Bahamas’ tourism drive, meanwhile, comes at a time when international travel restrictions are beginning to ease, boosted by an increase in global vaccination. Also collaborating in this revival is the scheduled air transportation to this territory, together with the return of the cruise industry.

On the other hand, many of the small Caribbean islands have few restrictions and have relaxed their entry requirements.

With such indicators, the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) maintains its optimism regarding tourism’s reactivation in the region, since during the last two years Caribbean destinations have demonstrated their resilience in the creation of recovery strategies, by frequently incorporating updated travel protocols and fostering collaboration with regional and international partners in the areas of health and development. A recovery that has been carried out while ensuring the health and safety of residents and visitors alike.

n an interview with TTC, the president and CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), Julia Simpson, reflects on the challenges of the sector to achieve its recovery, issues that will be key in its next world summit, in Manila, Philippines, from April 20 to 22.

What key issues will the common agenda between authorities and businesspeople raise at the Manila meeting to accelerate the safe reactivation of international travel?

Last year, Travel & Tourism suffered sizeable losses due to COVID-19 resulting from international and domestic mobility restrictions, many of them introduced chaotically.

It is wonderful to see the sector beginning to recover.

Not everywhere in the world is in the same place but economies are opening, and with them the flow of people wanting to travel. That is why we are calling our 21st Global Summit, Rediscover travel.

As we look to the future, and rediscover both travel and our world, the sector will need to learn to co-exist with COVID-19 and unlock the potential of new trends. What the pandemic showed us was the enormous courage and creativity of our sector.

We have learned how to be resilient and how to use new technologies in our businesses as we look to offer great opportunities to traveller that are safe and sustainable.

From your point of view, what should governments do to help boost the sector?

COVID-19 showed the impact of a world without tourism.

62 million jobs were lost, and many families and communities felt the devastating economic impact of the pandemic. We also saw an impact on wildlife and biodiversity. It will be essential for Travel & Tourism leaders to join forces. The one good thing to come from this is the public and private working together like never before.

Desde su punto de vista, ¿qué debieran hacer los gobiernos para contribuir al impulso del sector?

La COVID-19 mostró el impacto de un mundo sin turismo. Se perdieron 62 millones de empleos y muchas familias y comunidades sintieron el devastador impacto económico de la pandemia. has demonstrated how crucial it is to have a public-private sector collaboration versus isolationism. Every country did their own thing, and the result was chaos, confusion for the traveller and damage to the economy.

To what extent do you consider that the simplification of health regulations could contribute to the reactivation of the sector throughout the world?

Latest scientific evidence shows closing borders does not stop the spread of the virus or new variants. WTTC supports the World Health Organization’s (WHO) position in calling for borders to remain open and safe travel to continue.

For the last two years, WTTC has called upon governments to shift their risk assessment to individuals, instead of countries, and allow the fully vaccinated to travel freely.

For more than 30 years, the WTTC has carried out research on the economic impact of travel and tourism in the world.

In this sense, how do you think the contribution of the tourism sector to the world economy and to employment could behave once the countries finally start to recover from the pandemic?

Omicron has paused what we had hoped would be a strong start to 2022. However, we are now seeing economies opening.

Our latest research shows that if the vaccine and booster rollout continue and governments roll back the restrictions then the Travel & Tourism sector’s contribution to the global economy could reach $8.6 trillion this year, just 6.4% behind prepandemic levels, while we could recover 58 million jobs, reaching more than 330 million, just 1% below 2019 levels.

How does the WTTC estimate that the reserves will behave in the coming months? Is there room for optimism in this 2022? Will that long-awaited “light at the end of the tunnel” be seen in the sector this year?

Travellers around the world have shown their eagerness to travel, and we see a huge amount of pent-up demand. As restrictions ease, we are seeing a significant surge in travel bookings.

In November we launched a Net Zero Roadmap for the Travel

& Tourism sector to support the industry in combatting climate change. This is really exciting.

It charts a course for the whole sector to reduce its carbon footprint. It is up to everyone to play their part.

The sector is taking this opportunity to be a catalyst for change. Many destinations are affected by the impacts of climate change with rising sea levels, deforestation and the loss of animal and plant species. We have a responsibility towards both our people and planet.

With this meeting, tourism reaffirms its commitment to preserve the planet and biodiversity, reduce the effects of climate change and increase the sector’s resilience in order to guarantee sustainable growth.

Puerto Rico’s tourism authorities stated during the presentation of the event at the Madrid International Tourism Fair (Fitur 2022), that the meeting represents a great opportunity to recognize the country as a safe destination, while positioning it as an important events destination.

The Convention District of Puerto Rico is considered the most modern and technological in the Caribbean.

FITCuba 2022 International Tourism Fair to Mark New Stage for Cuban Tourism

FITCuba will include business forums, technology and events and incentives, a fair for exhibitors and suppliers; and it will feature activities throughout the destination. The Meliá Las Américas Hotel will be the sub-venue.

A RENOVATED VARADERO As part of the preparation for the event, and the post-pandemic reopening, the destination incorporated new attractions, and is executing an accelerated process of improvements and investments.

Today Varadero displays a renovated image. The capital repair of the well-known Josone Park was undertaken, as well as the

restoration of the Casa Perla heritage building, converted into a luxury product.

Special mention goes to the new Boulevard, a complex with more than 60 services, among them, gastronomic, commercial, motel; rum, coffee and tobacco houses; and other attractions for the family.

In addition, the Marlin Marina is being restored, and work is underway on other tourism projects in the Matanzas territory: the theme park in Río Canímar, the Estrella Lookout Point and El Quijote Park.

Varadero was chosen this year as the second-best beach in the world by the Travellers Choice Awards granted by the specialized Trip Advisor website based on the opinion of its users. Located on the Hicacos Peninsula, on the north coast of Matanzas, and 140 kilometers from Havana, it has 52 hotel facilities with more than 21,600 rooms.

The main tourist event of the largest of the Caribbean islands will hold its 40th edition from May 3 to 7 in Varadero beach resort, dedicated to the sun and beach modality. Russia will be the guest of honor country, a market with significant growth in the issuance of tourists to the country.

After being postponed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, FITCuba 2022 again summons travel agencies, tour operators, airlines and other companies associated with the industry to verify Cuban tourism’s development and explore business opportunities.

Varadero renovado Como parte de la preparación del evento, y de la reapertura pospandémica, el destino incorporó nuevos atractivos, y ejecuta un proceso acelerado de mejoras e inversiones.

Hoy Varadero muestra una imagen renovada. Se acometió la reparación capital del conocido Parque Josone, y la restauración del inmueble patrimonial Casa Perla, convertido en un producto de lujo.

Mención aparte para el novedoso Boulevard, un complejo con más de 60 servicios, entre ellos, gastronómicos, comerciales, motel; casas del ron, café y tabaco; y otros atractivos para la familia.

Además, se restaura la Marina Marlin, y se trabaja en otros proyectos turísticos en el territorio matancero: el parque temático en Río Canímar, la Estrella Mirador y el parque El Quijote.

Varadero fue elegido este año como la segunda mejor playa del mundo por los Premios Travellers Choice que otorga la web especializada Trip Advisor a parte de la opinión de sus usuarios. Ubicado en la península de Hicacos, en la costa norte de Matanzas, y a 140 kilómetros de La Habana, dispone de 52 instalaciones hoteleras que aglutinan más de 21 600 habitaciones.

The success of Nature, Adventure and Rural Tourism in Cuba is associated with sustainable environmental management in natural areas with a high degree of biological diversity, well preserved, with high aesthetic-landscape values, and high endemism of its flora and fauna.

Cuban landscapes have great attractions for lovers of hiking.

The tours can be of relatively short duration (2 to 3 hours) on easily accessible flat paths; or of longer

duration, in walks of half a day, a day, or several days. Climbing in mountainous areas (trekking) is also recommended.

The paths range from low complexity — suitable for children and older adults — to moderate to high, for the more adventurous.

The aim is for every visitor who carries out a program, route, optional circuit or nature or rural tourism event in Cuba includes the exclusive possibility of enjoying a path that will offer healthy recreation, education and environmental culture.

Los senderos van desde una complejidad baja –aptos para niños y adultos mayores, hasta de moderada a alta, para los más aventureros.

El propósito es que todo visitante que desarrolle un programa, ruta, circuito opcional o evento de turismo de naturaleza o rural en Cuba incluya la posibilidad exclusiva de disfrutar de un sendero que le ofrecerá un sano esparcimiento, educación y cultura ambiental.

La cultura del café en el oriente cubano

Un aroma que trasciende

omo es conocido, la provincia de Santiago de Cuba con sus territorios cafetaleros es la mayor productora del grano en el país; asimismo, su identidad se vincula de manera extraordinaria con el café y su cultura a través del tiempo. La historia de Santiago de Cuba está entrelazada con el café y los cafetales, de ayer y de hoy, de manera tal que tiene visos de leyenda.

En este contexto, existían poderosas razones para fundamentar la creación, en 2015, del Centro de Interpretación y Divulgación del Patrimonio Cultural Cafetalero de Santiago de Cuba. En la actualidad, se hace pertinente una proyección del Centro hacia el futuro, ampliando sus espacios y fortaleciendo su función social y cultural como Centro de Interpretación de la Cultura del Café de Santiago de Cuba.

El origen de este novedoso espacio cultural es la creación del Centro de Interpretación y Divulgación del Patrimonio Cultural Cafetalero (Casa Dranguet), una de las obras emblemáticas realizadas por la Oficina del Conservador de la Ciudad en el Centro Histórico Urbano, para celebrar los 500 años de la fundación de Santiago de Cuba.

Ubicado en el Centro Histórico de la ciudad es un espacio diseñado para promocionar los valores excepcionales de este Patrimonio de la Humanidad (UNESCO, 2000) y las acciones encaminadas a salvaguardar la cultura vinculada al café, especialmente en Santiago de Cuba. La antigua vivienda del hacendado Don Carlos Dranguet Thomas, actualmente sede del proyecto Los Caminos del Café, funciona como un centro cultural donde el buen arte se mezcla con el aroma y el sabor de un café de excelencia.

En sus espacios expositivos se muestra el patrimonio cultural cafetalero de la región del sudeste de Cuba, a través de su historia, con énfasis en los vestigios que aún se conservan en el territorio montañoso santiaguero. Se destaca el trabajo de la Oficina del Conservador de la Ciudad de Santiago de Cuba y otras instituciones locales por la preservación de tan importante legado material e inmaterial, además de darle visibilidad al proyecto Los Caminos del Café. De igual forma, cuenta con la cafetería Café Dranguet a la que puede acceder el visitante interesado en degustar algunas de las variadas formas de preparación de la popular bebida, además de otras ofertas gastronómicas ligeras.

A seis años de su fundación, esta institución, única de su tipo en Cuba, se ha convertido en uno de los espacios culturales más importantes de la ciudad de Santiago, con reconocimiento, además, en el ámbito nacional e internacional.

En resumen, se trata de ampliar la conceptualización e interpretación sumando a los espacios preexistentes (discurso museológico con énfasis en lo histórico patrimonial), a otros que introducen la modernidad (proceso industrial, gastronomía internacional, arte) que contribuyan de conjunto a comunicar y valorizar de manera más eficaz nuestra cultura del café.

Se complementa el recorrido cultural con el Parque Eco-Arqueológico Cafetalero Fraternidad, localizado en las zonas rurales. En este ámbito se estableció el Centro de Interpretación de la Cultura Rural de Café, en las instalaciones de la antigua hacienda cafetalera Fraternidad. Estos sitios se han organizado, a su vez, en circuitos interpretativos: Circuito 1 Gran Piedra y Circuito 2 Fraternidad, los cuales establecen recorridos por sitios de alto interés patrimonial, natural y cultural.

De esta manera, quien entre en contacto con esta oferta de turismo cultural podrá ac-

ceder al conocimiento y la degustación placentera de uno de los elementos fundamentales que conforman la fisonomía cultural y la identidad de Santiago; funcionará como un complejo que articulará sus espacios enclavados en el centro histórico urbano con los sitios de alto interés patrimonial y paisajístico en las zonas rurales.

Para lograr este objetivo ya se han sentado bases sólidas desde el año 2015. Entre las acciones vinculadas al proyecto de colaboración internacional Los Caminos del Café estuvieron aquellas que permitieron estrechar relaciones con las entidades económicas presentes en el territorio, pertenecientes al Ministerio de la Agricultura; así, se han establecido vínculos con las estructuras agropecuarias para impulsar el fomento de café, forestal y actividades turísticas y para el desarrollo de ofertas de servicios, comercio, gastronomía, que beneficiarán a numerosas familias vinculadas a esta temática.

Para garantizar la gestión turística adecuada del Parque Arqueológico Fraternidad, la dirección del proyecto ha realizado encuentros y visitas de trabajo con el Ministerio de Turismo y su Delegación Provincial a fin de conformar la Ruta del Café, que constituye

un producto turístico con experiencias únicas. Es importante mencionar que la Oficina del Conservador de la Ciudad ha establecido contratos con las agencias turísticas receptivas ECOTUR (especializada en turismo cultural y de naturaleza), CUBATUR y CUBANACÁN con gran movilidad de grupos en el territorio nacional.

El proyecto ha servido de interlocutor entre las agencias turísticas y la Cooperativa Las Yaguas. Así se estableció el marco contractual que permite a esta última brindar servicios al turismo y diversificar y aumentar sus fuentes de ingreso y, por consiguiente, mejorar la calidad de vida de sus trabajadores.

En la actualidad, se trabaja en una nueva fase de Los Caminos del Café que tiene su fundamento en el Plan de Manejo del Paisaje Arqueológico Cafetalero del Sudeste de Cuba.

El resultado esperado será una carretera que vinculará la ciudad con 14 asentamientos rurales, 11 pertenecientes al municipio de Santiago de Cuba y tres al de Songo-La Maya, al igual que una población rural dispersa. Se estima que alrededor de 10 000 habitantes se servirán de esta vía en este vasto territorio, que abarca 125 kilómetros cuadrados.

En el contexto actual, el proyecto Los Caminos del Café de Santiago de Cuba apuesta por crear alianzas culturales y económicas, y ampliar las existentes a favor de un desarrollo sostenible. Asimismo, trabaja para fortalecer la Ruta del Café, la cual, como producto turístico, está en condiciones de atraer cada vez más al público interesado, nacional y extranjero, porque reúne ingredientes que van desde la cultura a la naturaleza, e identifican a Santiago de Cuba como Capital de la Cultura en el Caribe.

THE CULTURE OF COFFEE IN THE CUBAN EAST AN AROMA THAT TRANSCENDS The history of Santiago de Cuba is intertwined with coffee and coffee plantations, yesterday and today, in such a way that it has overtones of legend.

The Coffee Cultural Heritage Interpretation and Dissemination Center (Casa Dranguet), located in the city’s Historic Center, is a space designed to promote the exceptional values of this World Heritage Site (UNESCO, 2000) and the actions aimed at safeguarding the culture linked to coffee, especially in Santiago de Cuba. The former home of landowner Don Carlos Dranguet Thomas, currently the headquarters of the Los Caminos del Café project, functions as a cultural center where good art is mixed with the aroma and flavor of an excellent coffee.

The only one of its kind in Cuba, this institution has become one of the most important cultural spaces in the city.

The cultural tour is complemented with the Eco-Archaeological Coffee Plantation Fraternidad Park, located in rural areas. In this area, the Rural Coffee Culture Interpretation Center was established in the facilities of the old Fraternidad coffee plantation. These sites have been organized, in turn, into interpretive circuits, which establish tours of sites of high heritage, natural and cultural interest.

In this way, whoever comes into contact with this cultural tourism offer will be able to access knowledge and the pleasant tasting of one of the fundamental elements that make up the cultural physiognomy and identity of Santiago.

The Los Caminos del Café de Santiago de Cuba project will continue to expand its cultural and economic alliances that promote sustainable development; and will strengthen the Coffee Route, which, as a tourist product, is in a position to increasingly attract the interested public, because it brings together ingredients that range from culture to nature, and identify Santiago de Cuba as the Capital of Culture in Caribbean.

Welcome tourism snapshot for the new Caribbean ◼ FRANK MARTIN

I

n the midst of a restoration advancing in the face of obstacles of the still risky global pandemic the Caribbean has launched a tourism campaign not only about its immense tropical sea but also its beaches, forests and volcanoes and its traditions.

The region is already gradually opening up to its visitors from all over the world.

A common islands information is those of the cruises ships that currently offer extraordinary trips, and the already open international airports are comfortable and safe.

The biggest hotel companies of the planet, in coordination with governments and businessmen, started innovations that mix fun with health care and smart programs readies to avoid disturbing fun costumer’s vacation.

Caribbean beaches rejuvenate. In Mexico, a country with extensive Caribbean tourist coast the Ministry of Tourism announced a millionaire investment for the recovery of beach areas on the Atlantic, among others on the island of Cozumel.

A similar process began in Cuba months ago. In Varadero beach, promoted as the most beautiful on the island, problems of seashore erosion were solved; even concrete structures that limited the natural functioning of the beach were demolished.

Caribbean beaches are jewels for the islands and for visitors.

destinations with white sand are calculated. Surfing, sailing, diving, windsurfing, swimming with dolphins, and watching whales in their natural environment are everyday Caribbean scenes again.

The volcanic chains of Antigua, Barbuda and Anguilla are a unique gift.

Also, the coral landscapes.

The Netherlands Antilles, that includes Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, Sint Eustatius and Saint Maarten, are known for the excellent beaches and some of the best-preserved reefs in the region. Much of the Dutch influence is still visible on the islands, including their currency, food, and pastelpainted, gabled houses.

The Caribbean region is also not precisely boring when it comes to markets and shopping opportunities.

They are definitely also extraordinarily attractive in terms of lush tropical forests that are home to hundreds of species of plants and birds.

Sports activities also participate in this complex recovery. Golf courses, horse stables and baseball are already waiting for tourism.

Caribbean food is a winning element in the entertainment industry. In addition to the traditions of each island, European, Arab and even African table are in it.

The Caribbean is already serving visitors and despite the long pandemic it is serving them well and with studied health security resources.

Una información común es que los cruceros ofrecen viajes extraordinarios, y los aeropuertos internacionales ya abiertos, son cómodos y seguros.

Las mayores empresas hoteleras, en coordinación con gobiernos y empresarios, pusieron en marcha innovaciones que mezclan la diversión con el cuidado de la salud, y programas inteligentes listos para no perturbar las vacaciones de los turistas.

Las playas del Caribe rejuvenecen. En México, país con extensa costa turística caribeña, la Secretaría de Turismo anunció una millonaria inversión para la recuperación de zonas de playa en el Atlán­ tico, entre otras, en la isla de Cozumel.

Un proceso similar inició en Cuba hace meses. En la playa de Varadero, promocionada como la más bella de la isla, se solucionaron los problemas de erosión de las costas, incluso se demolieron estructuras de hormigón que limitaban su funcionamiento natural.

Las playas del Caribe son joyas para las islas y para los visitantes.

Se calculan decenas de destinos únicos con arena blanca. El surf, la vela, el buceo, el windsurf, el nado con delfines y el avistamiento de ballenas en su entorno natural vuelven a ser escenarios cotidianos del Caribe.

Las cadenas volcánicas de Antigua, Barbuda y Anguila son un regalo único. También los paisajes coralinos.

Son conocidas por sus excelentes playas y algunos de los arrecifes mejor conservados de la región las Antillas Neerlandesas, que incluyen Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, Sint Eustatius y Saint Maarten. Gran parte de la influencia holandesa todavía es visible en las islas, incluida su moneda, comida y casas a dos aguas pintadas en colores pastel.

El Caribe tampoco es precisamente aburrido cuando se trata de mercados y oportunidades de compras.

Asimismo, son extraordinariamente atractivos en términos de exuberantes bosques tropicales que albergan cientos de especies de plantas y aves.

Las actividades deportivas también participan en esta compleja recuperación: campos de golf, establos, y béisbol ya están esperando al turismo.

FERROMAR S.A.

“Together, at any distance” T

he FERROMAR S.A. trading company, a user of the Mariel Special Development Zone (ZEDM), has established itself as the main long-distance containerized cargo carrier in Cuba with the incorporation of railway traffic from the east of the country from the port of Santiago de Cuba.

Barely 10 months after being created, its transportation volumes are growing and another of its achievements is having obtained permits for multimodal operation, which will allow it to transport containers as an operator to and from the ZEDM in intermodal mode (railway-automotive).

FERROMAR S.A. also assumes the transportation of cold storage containers with high security and, with success, it is able to reduce delivery cycles, which has earned it recognition from customers for the quality of the service provided.

In the medium term, the main challenge for FERROMAR S.A. is the creation of strategic alliances by attracting foreign investment, as well as redesigning passenger transportation services between the country’s capital and the ZEDM, with a high impact on the communities located along that route.

«JUNTOS, A CUALQUIER DISTANCIA»

La sociedad mercantil FERROMAR S.A., usuario de la Zona Especial de Desarrollo Mariel (ZEDM), se consolida como el principal transportista de cargas contenerizadas a largas distancias en Cuba, con la incorporación de los tráficos del oriente del país, por vía ferroviaria, desde el puerto de Santiago de Cuba.

A apenas 10 meses de constituida, crecen sus volúmenes de transportación y otro de sus logros es haber obtenido los permisos para la operación multimodal, lo que le permitirá transportar contenedores como operador desde y hacia la ZEDM en modo intermodal (ferroviario-automotor).

“A

smart tourist destination (STD) is defined around five central aspects that are governance, innovation, technology, accessibility and sustainability. In each one of them, a series of indicators are evaluated that are aimed at improving the management of the destination, as well as improving the tourist experience,” Enrique Martínez Marín, president of SEGITTUR, Spain’s State Company for the Management of Innovation and Tourism Technologies, responsible for promoting innovation in the national tourism sector, both in the public and private sectors, explained in an interview with TTC. The expert talked about the advantages of a smart destination and the factors involved in achieving that goal. “The governance system must contribute so that tourists have a

DESTINOS TURÍSTICOS INTELIGENTES: GARANTÍA DE UNA MEJOR EXPERIENCIA TURÍSTICA «Un destino turístico inteligente (DTI) se define alrededor de cinco ejes que son la gobernanza, la innovación, la tecnología, la accesibilidad y la sostenibilidad. En cada uno de ellos se evalúan una serie de indicadores que van dirigidos a mejorar la gestión del destino, así como a mejorar la experiencia del turista», explicó a TTC en entrevista exclusiva Enrique Martínez Marín, presidente de SEGITTUR, Sociedad Mercantil Estatal para la Gestión de la Innovación y las Tecnologías Turísticas de España, responsable de impulsar la innovación en el sector turístico nacional, tanto en el sector público como en el privado.

El experto conversó acerca de las ventajas de un destino inteligente y los factores que intervienen en el logro de ese objetivo. «El sistema de gobernanza debe contribuir para que el turista tenga una mejor experiencia durante su viaje al destino, donde, gracias a la accesibilidad todos pueden disfrutar. La vocación de innovación también contribuye en el marketing, tanto en la manera de atraer, como de retener al visitante. En definitiva, los ejes del destino inteligente contribuyen a que el servicio sea mejor y, por lo tanto, la satisfacción de los turistas también lo sea».

Dados sus excelentes resultados, el proyecto DTI que impulsan la Secretaría de Turismo y Segittur ha marcado pautas a nivel internacional. Explica Martínez Marín que «la metodología aplicada en el proyecto de destinos turísticos inteligentes tuvo desde sus inicios una vocación internacional. España analizó distintas necesidades de los destinos turísticos y las aterrizó en un modelo, que ha sido reconocido por organismos internacionales como la Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT), el Consejo Mundial de Viajes y Turismo (WTTC), la Comisión Europea, la Organización para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Económicos (OCDE), y el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID).

«El modelo se ha implantado en algunos destinos internacionales como Medellín, Colombia, y Tequila, México, a la vez que ha sido acogido por el BID para darle forma iberoamericana y extenderlo por la región de América Latina y Caribe, adaptado a sus peculiaridades.

«Cada vez es mayor el interés internacional por implantar el modelo DTI. En estos días terminamos de trabajar con Bogotá, una de las ciudades más importantes de América Latina, a la que se le ha realizado un informe diagnóstico y un plan de acción para su conversión en DTI».

El presidente de Segitur se refirió a la accesibilidad como «(…) el eje de más difícil cumplimiento por parte de los destinos, ya que todos partimos de una base instaurada de acuerdo a valores anteriores que olvidaban las necesidades de partes muy significativas de la población. La accesibilidad marca un horizonte de exigencia que, como tiene detrás muchas obligaciones, tarda más en rendir frutos. Sin embargo, hay una parte de más rápido despliegue, y es

la relativa al entorno digital como puede ser la web de promoción o las aplicaciones móviles. Lo importante en este aspecto es que para el futuro marcamos un camino muy claro de cómo hay que hacer las cosas».

«La sostenibilidad es uno de los ejes básicos del modelo –añade–. Generalmente hablamos más de sostenibilidad medioambiental, ya que debemos evitar que el turismo tenga un impacto negativo en el entorno natural; pero en el modelo DTI también se mide y trabaja la sostenibilidad económica, con el objetivo de saber qué impacto tiene el turismo en la economía local, qué empleo genera, etc. A todo ello, hay que añadirle la sostenibilidad social y cultural, es importante que los destinos mantengan su esencia y se respete la cultura e idiosincrasia de cada lugar».

De ahí que las alianzas tanto a nivel gubernamental como empresarial sean esenciales: «La colaboración público-privada es una pieza fundamental para que el modelo de destinos turísticos inteligentes funcione. De hecho, la Red de Destinos Turísticos Inteligentes (Red DTI) cuenta con tres tipos de miembros, entre los que se combina la presencia pública: los destinos y las instituciones; y la privada, como es el caso de las empresas. El turista consume servicios de empresas privadas como hoteles y restaurantes, pero también servicios públicos como autobuses, carreteras, etc. Es por ello, que sin armonización y colaboración público-privada no es posible que el hecho turístico tenga lugar».

Respecto al papel de la digitalización de los destinos, especialmente en el contexto generado por la pandemia, apuntó que la situación creada por la COVID-19 ha impulsado este proceso, ya que han surgido nuevas necesidades detectadas desde el sector público y privado a las que la tecnología ha dado respuesta, contribuyendo así a la modernización de los destinos.

«Con la pandemia se han evidenciado la importancia de los servicios públicos y la digitalización, cuya presencia en algunos procesos del sector turístico contribuye a que la experiencia del turista sea más satisfactoria, ya que a la vez que se agilizan los tiempos, se mejoran la gestión y la seguridad».

Para finalizar, Enrique Martínez Marín se refirió a los próximos pasos y principales retos de la Red DTI, la cual ha posicionado a España a la vanguardia del turismo inteligente.

«Trabajamos día a día en la evolución del modelo, ya que hay que adaptarlo a las nuevas circunstancias y necesidades. (…) Asimismo, tenemos como objetivo medir el impacto de la misma en los destinos que ya la utilizan. Se suma el diseño de nuevos servicios para los miembros de la Red y la constitución de grupos de trabajo para temáticas concretas afines a los destinos miembros. En relación a los retos a mediano y largo plazo, cabría destacar la extensión internacional del modelo».

Hence, alliances at both the government and business levels are essential: “Public-private collaboration is a fundamental aspect for the model of smart tourist destinations to work. In fact, the Smart Tourist Destinations Network has three types of members, among which the public presence is combined: destinations and institutions; and the private, as is the case of companies. Tourists consume services from private companies such as hotels and restaurants, but also public services such as buses, roads, etc. That is why, without harmonization and public-private collaboration, it is not possible for the tourist action to take place.”

Regarding the role of the digitization of destinations, especially in the context generated by the pandemic, he pointed out that the situation created by COVID-19 has boosted this process, since new needs have arisen detected from the public and private sectors to which technology has responded, thus contributing to the modernization of destinations.

“With the pandemic, the importance of public services and digitization has become evident, its presence in some processes in the tourism sector contributes to a more satisfactory tourist experience, since while times are streamlined, the management and safety improve.”

To conclude, Enrique Martínez Marín referred to the next steps and main challenges of the STD Network, which has positioned Spain at the forefront of smart tourism.

“We are working day by day on the evolution of the model, since it has to be adapted to new circumstances and needs… Moreover, we aim to measure its impact on the destinations that already use it. The design of new services for the members of the Network and the constitution of working groups for specific topics related to the member destinations are added. In relation to the challenges in the medium and long term, the international expansion of the model should be highlighted.”

Caribbean Destinations Update Biosafety Protocols A s of March 1, international visitors no longer require a travel authorization to enter Jamaica. DESDE este 1 de marzo los visitantes internacionales no requieren una autorización de viaje para entrar a Jamaica. Los mayores de 12 años solo deberán proporcionar un resultado negativo de una prueba de PCR o antígeno COVID-19 realizada dentro de las 72 horas anteriores a su viaje.
