FITUR 2012 a Must-Attend Exhibition in Spain

Designs new initiatives aimed at optimizing networking and generating business opportunities.

T

he 32nd edition of FITUR, the Inter-national Tourism Trade Fair, will be held January 18–22, 2012. The event, organized by IFEMA, aims to spotlight its capacity as a meeting point for the sector and a platform generating business opportunities for all participants. To this end, among other opportunities, for the first time FITUR will host a forum which, organized in conjunction with the U.N. World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), seeks to bolster commercial alliances between exhibitors, with special attention to the region of the Americas.

The meeting will promote B2B commercial interaction between the exhibitors of the 166 countries and regions represented at the Fair, with both public and private entities from North, Central and South America, especially with those from Latin America, which are extraordinary well represented at FITUR and for which the Fair is an indispensable and landmark forum.

This initiative was presented to the main representatives of the tourism industry in the Americas last May at the UNWTO for the Americas Commission Meeting celebrated in Asunción, Paraguay.

Meeting point for business FITUR’s role as a business center is also advanced through the second holding of its FITUR Workshop. This is a meeting point also based on B2B meetings between exhibitors and “hosted buyers” (international invitee buyers) at which, based

ITB BERLIN TO SHOWCASE WORLDWIDE INDUSTRY TRENDS IN MARCH According to the latest survey of the World Travel Monitor, commissioned by ITB Berlin, over the last five years there has been a double-digit increase in sporting holidays among European tourists, which has even overtaken cruises, which five years ago ranked ahead of sporting holidays. Germans in particular are keenest on sports, and account for 42 percent of the nine million sporting holidays taken

by Europeans abroad. At 14 percent, the Dutch rank second. In other European markets sporting holidays make up only six percent or less.

Among sporting holidaymakers the most popular destination is Austria, which among Europeans attracts 24 percent of the market, followed by Italy and Germany, accounting for 11 percent each.

During the last five years Germans also preferred Austria for testing their sporting limits. At 42 percent Austria ranks ahead of Italy (18 percent) and Switzerland (14 percent).

Most popular among European sporting holidaymakers are hiking (38 percent) and cycling tours (23 percent). They are followed in third by motor sports (car, motorcycle and motorboat racing) at 14 percent. At ten percent, golf ranks fourth in sporting pop4 •OCTOBER 2011

The last edition of FITUR attracted 10,434 companies from 166 countries and/or regions, and featured 209,260 participants between professionals and public.

Nine percent of German sporting holidaymakers prefer golf. What is striking is that sporting holidaymakers belong to the wealthier parts of society and as such are much targeted. European sporting holidaymakers average 43 years of age, and most live in households without children. More men than women are attracted to sports when they are on holiday. At 45 years of age, German sporting holidaymakers may be a little older than the European average, but in all other respects they are no different.

Parallel with the trade show, the ITB Berlin Convention, the largest travel industry event of its kind in the world, will be held March 7–9 (Wednesday to Friday), 2012.

INDUSTRY EVENTS CHTA CELEBRATINg 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF CARIBBEAN MARkETPLACE NEXT JANUARY Caribbean Marketplace 2012 will be held January 22–24 at the Atlantis, Paradise Island. The requisite business-to-business marketing event for the Caribbean hotel and tourism industry will be marking its 30th anniversary. Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA) anticipates the show will continue the success of 2011, which saw the third largest attendance over the past decade as well as increases in crucial buyer companies by 20% and buyer delegates by 17%. Scheduled appointments totaled 11,880 over the two-day event.

Buyer registration is $299 pp (after the third buyer delegate, the fee is reduced to $99 per additional delegate) and includes prescheduled appointments (if registration is received before December 12), listing in the electronic Delegate Directory, opening cocktail reception, closing dinner, coffee breaks, entrance to all business and social functions, roundtrip airport/hotel transfers and shuttle bus service between host hotels and Atlantis.

Supplier participation at Caribbean Marketplace 2012 requires the purchase of a booth. Supplier delegate registration is $429 pp and includes pre-scheduled appointments (if registration is received before December 12), listing in the electronic Delegate Directory, opening cocktail reception, closing dinner, coffee breaks, entrance to all business and social functions, and shuttle bus service between host hotels and the Atlantis.

Hotel accommodations and daily lunch are not included in the registration fee for buyers or suppliers. Lunch is available to delegates for an additional $30 pp per day for registrations received prior to January 16 ($35 after January 16).

CHTA has arranged for special hotel rates for Caribbean Marketplace delegates at the Atlantis, Paradise Island, Comfort Suites Paradise Island and Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort.

The deadline for special hotel rates is December 23 (based on availability).

AMAWATERWAYS RELEASES 2012 BROCHURE AmaWaterways’ new 128-page brochure for 2012 details extensive river cruise vacation itineraries, exciting new programs, specialty cruises and new vessels.

“AmaWaterways celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2012, a year which will mark a number of important developments and milestones at the company. We will not only operate 12 custom-designed vessels, but will expand our itineraries, excursions and amenities to deliver the finest river cruises available,” says Rudi Schreiner, President.

The brochure describes river cruise vacations on the Danube, Rhine, Main, Mosel and Rhone rivers. In Tanzania’s Arusha, the group will experience differences stemming from its mixed past of rivalry between Portuguese and Arab traders, control by the Germans and then Britain, and finally independence in 1961. Tourists will look at current aid projects and discuss benefits and drawbacks of Tanzania’s aid-based economy.

After that it’s on to Zanzibar’s historic richness that left its mark.

Arab traders arrived in the 8th century, sailing with the monsoon winds to trade in ivory, slaves and spices. Later the Persians came, the Indian traders who arrived as shopkeepers, traders, skilled artisans and professionals, and the British, involved in missionary and trading in East Africa.

A tour is made to Stone Town, a UNESCO Heritage Site, former capital of the Zanzibar Sultanate and the flourishing center of the spice and slave trades in the 18th century. There will be a vehicle tour of the island, spice plantations and Prison Island, and there will be meetings with officials to discuss economic and social development.

The group flies to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s bustling capital and major port. Guests will visit a local village and tour the National Museum and Botanical Gardens. There will also be meetings with diplomatic and political leaders to discuss the group’s experiences in Africa and the directions and issues that lie with Africa’s development.

REYkJAVIk, ICELAND, NAMED UNESCO ‘CITY OF LITERATURE’ Iceland’s capital of Reykjavik has just upped its cultural cache with a new title, “City of Literature,” designated by the UNESCO World Heritage Organization as part of the Creative Cities Network.

The project “Reykjavik City of Literature” was officially launched at the Reykjavik International Literary Festival in September. It’s part of an effort to enhance literary life in the city, including establishing a Center for Literature. The Reef resort added four loggerhead turtle nests to its’ extended family this summer.

In the past few months The Reef has worked closely with Cayman’s Department of Environment to ensure the safe hatching of the nests, and all were successfully sent off.

“I love seeing the baby turtles make their way to the water and start their journey in life, so focused on one thing—getting to the water,” said Suzy Marfleet, concierge. “Knowing that one day the females will return here to lay their own eggs, I feel like we are a part of the cycle of life and doing our bit to preserve these beautiful creatures.”

When a turtle nest is found at The Reef, it is reported to the Department Of Environment and marked with caution tape and signs explaining the importance of keeping the nests undisturbed.

The Reef staff and guests are alerted 48 hours prior to when the nest is expected to hatch.

Since turtles use moonlight as their guide to the sea, guests are asked to keep porch lights off so the turtles don’t mistake the human lighting for the moon.

Rarely seen, a nest hatched during daylight this year. This gave guests and staff a unique opportunity to capture the process on film without damaging the turtles’ eyes with flash photography. When the nest hatched, The Reef staff reacted by placing them in a bucket with damp sand and keeping them in a cool dry place. They were kept there until dusk to keep them safe from predators on their way out to sea. The Reef prides itself on being a safe home for nests.

Cabarete, on the north shore of the Dominican Republic, is one of the world’s premier destinations for windsurfing, kite surfing and regular surfing. Because of its world dominance in these sports, it attracts an international vacationing clientele from all over Europe, the United States and Canada.

Luciano uses only Florentine olive oil, “because,” he says, “it has the perfect balance of flavor and acidity so it comes through in the food, without overpowering.” He has eight pages of appetizers, seafood and meat entrees, desserts, sandwiches, snacks and pizza.

Breakfast is a full-meal buffet included in the price of the stay at Villa Taina.

For a light lunch, a guest can start with the chef’s uniquely prepared appetizer of Beef Tartare. He bakes 3-1/2-inch rounds of shredded Parmesan to a crispy texture and layers it with chopped sirloin and tops it with arugula. as he likes to say, “It is a serenade on the pallet.” It can be accompanied with soup from the menu, perhaps a non-Italian selection like Dominican-style pumpkin soup.

Of the 12 parks that make up this prestigious list, Manuel Antonio was the only national park featured from Central America. The Battle of Wake Island ended December 23, 1941, with the surrender of the American forces to Japan. Japan held the island until September 4, 1945, when the remaining Japanese garrison surrendered to a detachment of United States Marines.

Scott Young is an astronomer and science educator from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He became interested in the sky February 26, 1979, at 11:16 in the morning when a total solar eclipse swept through his hometown and changed his future path forever.

Scott has been active in the amateur astronomy community since the early 1980s, serving as president of the local chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada twice and as the RASC’s national president 2006–2008. He works in the planetarium field, first as a show presenter and later as Manager Producer of The Manitoba Museum’s Planetarium in Winnipeg and a three-year stint as Director of the Alice G. Wallace Planetarium in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

Scott is an in-demand presenter, offering talks on astronomy and observing at star parties, conventions and local astronomy clubs across Canada. He is currently the Manager of Science Communication and Visitor Experiences at The Manitoba Museum, overseeing science program and exhibit development as well as planetarium show creation.

Outside of his astronomical experience, Scott is an avid amateur musician.
