MINIMISING THE DAMAGE OF A CHIPPED WINDSHIELD DOs
&
DON’Ts
DO • Measure the chip If the chip is less than 1 inch in diameter it can be repaired. If it is over 1 inch do not drive the vehicle.
• Drive more slowly If your windshield is already damaged you should drive more slowly to try to avoid further damage.
• Keep the chip clean If dirt gets into the chip it can make a repair more difficult. You can use clear tape to help keep it clean.
• Find shaded parking spots If you park in direct sunlight the inside of your car can get very hot. This heat could cause your chip to become a crack.
• Contact a repairer ASAP The longer you leave it the more likely it is that the chip will become a crack.
DON’T • Drive if the chip obstructs your view Driving with any obstruction to your view is a bad idea.
• Slam your doors Slamming your doors can jolt the windshield enough to turn the chip into a crack.
• Wash the windscreen If water gets into the chip it can make the damage worse.
• Expose the windshield to quick temperature changes Blasting air-conditioning or windshield heaters can also cause a chip to become a crack.
• Ignore the chip of put off a repair The sooner you deal with it the less likely it is you’ll need to have the windshield replaced.
