MESSAGE Our Presenting Sponsor
Peter Maher
I was standing in the water near Noosa Surf Club recently when I looked down and there was a school of fish swimming around my ankles. They weren’t just your garden variety baby fish – these were decent sized adult fish who had clearly decided that I was their new best friend. This doesn’t happen every day and it reinforced to me that every time I come to Noosa, everything I have experienced about Noosa and most especially, everything about The Noosa Longweekend is a constant surprise and delight. Macquarie has sponsored the Noosa Longweekend for the past 11 years and it is the quality of the program and the genuine surprises in the names that this festival attracts that bring us back. Every year this fabulous festival grows and attracts bigger and more talented artists, it continues to be innovative in the breadth of its genres and, even in a difficult financial environment, it continues to thrive and find ways to make wonderful things happen.
WELCOME President’s Message
It does this through a dedicated committee and the hard working, talented and tireless director, Ian Mackellar. Not many national festivals can boast the accomplishments that have been achieved by this team and their predecessors during the past 11 years. I know you are all going to enjoy this program and the spectacular offerings that Ian has again carefully constructed. Macquarie is proud to again be the presenting sponsor of the Noosa Longweekend and we know that everyone who attends will remember the delights of Noosa and the world class entertainment of this 10 day event.
PETER MAHER Group Head, Macquarie Banking and Financial Services Group

The development of this program is the result of many hours of hard work by a small number of people dedicated to making a significant contribution to the Noosa community. I hope you will join me in applauding their efforts by supporting this year’s festival and deriving as much pleasure as they have had in putting this great program of events together. Let the show begin!!!

Hilary Linstead
Growing Old Outrageously ‘I warned people not to let these two women of a certain age loose on the world. Now look what’s happened.’ – Louis Nowra Two old school friends, Hilary Linstead and Elizabeth Davies, reconnected unexpectedly after 35 years and discovered they both loved travelling. Not having a clue whether they would get along, they embarked on a trial journey to Morocco, where they discovered their delight in laughing at themselves and each other. That tentative beginning has turned into a series of wonderful adventures, which are recounted in their newly published memoir of travel, food and friendship, Growing Old Outrageously, which will appeal to the adventurous and armchair traveller alike. Hilary Linstead left England for Australia at 21 and has enjoyed a long and illustrious career as a casting director and theatrical agent, representing Gillian Armstrong, Baz Luhrmann, Louis Nowra and Wendy Harmer. Her partner in adventure, Elizabeth Davies, a Cambridge graduate, is a former free-lance journalist and civil servant.

CAUGHT BETWEEN GIANTS:
China and the USA
Once Australia’s loyalty was to the British Empire. Then we aligned with the United States. Pax Americana has been good for us, but what of the future? We’ve agreed to an expanded US military presence here. While small, how does China view this? Do the Chinese see this as symbolic, a recognition of history? Alignment with the US or China is a challenging issue for Australia, and the questions this raises are many and complex. Can we keep China as our biggest trading partner while remaining close and comfortable with America? Do we have to make a choice? Or indeed through our links with both, can we broker an outcome where each plays a significant role in our region, yet neither is dominant – a Pax Pacifica? Peter Hartcher, the Sydney Morning Herald’s Political and International editor. He was the Financial Review’s Asia-Pacific Editor for five years, and US correspondent for three years. Dr Paul Monk, a founder of Austhink Consulting, polymath and public intellectual who was head of China analysis at the Defence Intelligence Organisation. Professor Alan Dupont has worked on Australian defence and Asian security issues for more than 30 years as a strategist, diplomat, policy analyst and scholar. Rory Medcalf, former diplomat and senior analyst for the Office of National Assessments, and now Program Director for International Security at the Lowy Institute. Paul Barclay of Radio National’s Big Issues program will probe these and other questions with the panelists.

As well, there are accusations of fraudulent securities behaviour, some of which are being tested in Australian courts. The problems these caused only became apparent as the USA’s real estate bubble collapsed. What are the lessons from the worst financial catastrophe since the Great Depression? The Longweekend has enlisted four experts to tell us what they learned, and what should be done. Warwick McKibbin is Director of the Research School of Economics at the ANU, and a Research Fellow at the Brookings Institute in Washington DC. As a Director of the Reserve Bank of Australia for a decade, including during the GFC, few are better placed to comment on the GFC, its causes and lessons. Satyajit Das is the author of 16 books, including a 4,200page tome described as “the bible on financial derivatives”. He is a consultant to financial institutions and corporations in North America, Asia and Australia, and a highly respected commentator. Riccardo Briganti has more than 20 years’ experience in the economics and finance sector, and is Head of Research for Macquarie Private Wealth. Karen Mayley contributes to the online newsletter Business Spectator, writing extensively on Greece’s debt problems, President Obama’s regulatory response to the GFC, and other GFC issues. Paul Barclay from Radio National’s Big Ideas will bring the diverse thoughts of these experts together.

FORUMS INSIDERS:
Making sense of Canberra’s chaos Insiders, with veteran political observer Barrie Cassidy, will again dissect Canberra politics. ,
COAL SEAM GAS:
Economic bonanza or an environmental disaster? Coal Seam Gas has burst into Australia’s consciousness. Now tensions are simmering between some landowners and miners. Advocates say CSG is cleaner and greener than alternative hydrocarbon energy sources, with Queensland’s known reserves estimated to be sufficient to power a city of 1 million people for 5,000 years The industry will create around 18,000 new jobs, generating new State royalties of $850m a year. But opponents say the risks are unknown and costs too great. Up to 40,000 wells may be drilled, and thousands of kilometres of pipeline laid. At least three new LNG plants will be built in Gladstone to process the CSG. The rewards are enormous: but how great are the risks? Paul Barclay will probe the industry’s pros and cons with one of its most influential opponents Tony Windsor, MP, Federal Member for New England whose concerns have led to the establishment of an Independent Expert Scientific Committee to review mine proposals. They will be joined by Tony Wood, Energy Program Director at the Grattan Institute; Rick Wilkinson, of the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association and veteran of the oil and gas industry having worked in Iran, Iraq, Egypt, the Sudan and the USA, and who initiated Santos’s $16bn Gladstone LNG project; and Paul Cleary, a senior writer for The Australian and author of Too Much Luck: The mining boom and the future of Australia.

In 2010 Barrie was uncanny in predicting Kevin Rudd’s imminent demise – it happened later that week! So what do Barrie and his expert panel think 2012 holds? With Labor Party leadership questions settled for now, a minority government holding power with the slimmest of margins, a rampant Opposition and increasingly confident Opposition Leader, Barrie declared at program deadline that nominating a topic for discussion, four months away, was impossible. The only certainty, he said, is that chaos in one form or another will continue. Barrie will be joined the Sydney Daily Telegraph’s Malcolm Farr; the Sydney Morning Herald’s National Affairs correspondent Lenore Taylor; and Dennis Atkins of The Courier-Mail. As usual, there will be an acerbically entertaining video reel of the highlights (and lowlights) of latest developments in Federal politics.

FORUMS THE END OF GROWTH:
What does this mean for you? Growth underpins our economic and financial systems. It has dragged people out of poverty, lifted living standards, and turned third world countries into prosperous nations.

This growth was built on ‘financialisation’ (ie. the acquisition of debt in ever-increasing amounts), exploitation of resources ie. hydrocarbons and water, and mispricing of pollution. Can it continue? Is this economic model running out of steam? And if so, what does slower growth, or even no growth, mean for all of us – for retirement, health care, aged care, infrastructure maintenance and replacement, and future employment? Saul Eslake has the knack of explaining economics in terms understandable to mere mortals. Top economist at the Bank of America/Merrill Lynch in Melbourne. Satyajit Das, author of 16 books including the best-selling Guns and Money and most recently Extreme Money. Richard Gibbs, Chief Economist and Head of Economics for the Macquarie Group Ltd, will polish his crystal ball on future growth prospects.

Robin de Crespigny – The People Smuggler
Robin de Crespigny
The Oskar Schindler of Asia? The true story of Ali al Jenabi. Robin de Crespigny is best known as a documentary and feature film director. Her first book, The People Smuggler, has been described by her publisher as “... the most significant book about modern Australia since Chloe Hooper’s The Tall Man”. It tells the true story of Ali al Jenabi, a victim of Saddam Hussein’s brutal regime, who, after fleeing for his life along with his family, attempted to get to Australia – a country they knew nothing about, but understood to be safe, free and compassionate. This is the engrossing story of how Ali al Jenabi survived his years without a passport or a state, how the people smuggling business functions, and how Ali was treated when he and his family finally arrived in Australia. It will open your eyes to what refugees are fleeing from, and what makes them risk their lives and the lives of their families in seeking safety.
Join Robin in conversation with bmag feature writer and radio presenter Alexandria Bernard, for what promises to be an enlightening, and possibly controversial discussion.

Love and Hunger… Thoughts on the Gift of Food Acclaimed award-winning author and blogger Charlotte Wood joins us for the first time at the Noosa Longweekend. She speaks with Jennifer Byrne. Charlotte isn’t just a great fiction writer (her books have been short-listed for the Miles Franklin, the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the Australian Book Industry Awards, among others), she’s also a dedicated and prolific writer on food, through her blog, howtoshuckanoyster.com In her new book, Love & Hunger, Charlotte explores the solitary and shared pleasures of cooking and eating, in an ode to good food, prepared and presented with minimum fuss and maximum love. In this age of gastro-porn and the fetishisation of food, the pressure to be as expert as the chefs we’ve turned into celebrities can feel overwhelming. To quote Maggie Beer: “A love of food oozes from Charlotte’s every pore in this wonderful book… So many tidbits shared, so many ‘aha’ moments and things I needed to know!”
Jennifer Byrne, host of ABC’s First Tuesday Book Club, has kindly agreed to join Charlotte on stage, to discuss not just her love of food, but also of writing, in all its forms.

WORKSHOPS
Welcome to the Theatre…
Younger theatre workshops
