MESSAGES
Message from our Presenting Sponsor Over 12 years ago, two amazing things happened in Noosa. One was the tentative beginnings of what is now known as the stunning Noosa Long Weekend Festival in which I actually played a small part, and the other was the formation of a company which commenced operation of its first Community Bank® Branch in Cooroy. Two years later branches were opened in Tewantin and Marcoola.
This year includes a stunning line up of culture, entertainment and fun not to be missed. There is something for everyone to enjoy attracting both visitors and locals alike. I congratulate the organising committee, staff, volunteers, performers, Director Ian Mackellar, and of course the originators David and Kristin Williamson. Pick your favourite programs, book your tickets, come along and simply ENJOY this celebration of the arts.
Community banking is designed to empower our local communities by distributing profits back to organisations who in turn also support the local community. Providing people keep banking with us, this source of community financial support can continue forever ensuring in an ever growing, long term sustainable funding source.

It is through the success of this local company, which has already distributed nearly $1 million back to our local Noosa Community, that we are immensely proud to now add this wonderful event to our sponsorship portfolio. It’s a natural fit as two local community based organisations work in collaboration to bring you this year’s fabulous event.
Owners and operators of Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin Community Bank® branches of Bendigo Bank.
President’s Welcome Welcome to the Noosa Long Weekend Festival for 2014. This year the festival is full of pizzaz and fun. From the official opening in Hastings Street to our Festival Wrap party there are 10 days of fabulous entertainment with something for everyone, young and old. I am very excited to be a small part of a wonderful event showcasing outstanding entertainers, artists, authors and speakers being held in this very special part of the world. To run Australia’s only regional multigenre Festival would be impossible without a dedicated band of so many unsung heroes and heroines (our 90 volunteers) and the generosity of our wonderful Partners, Sponsors, Patrons and Friends. Our relationship with so

many like-minded organisations in the arts community is also critical to our success. We are constantly uplifted by the wonderful commitment from so many, not the least of which comes from the tireless work of our very experienced and talented Festival Director, Ian Mackellar and his small cohort of workers. I encourage you to come along and be part of this fantastic, quality event.

Presenting our Festival Ambassador Catherine Alcorn We are delighted Catherine has accepted our invitation to be our inaugural NLWF Ambassador 2014. Many of you would remember Catherine Alcorn from her sold out performance of her Bette Midler show at NLWF 2012. 2 part mini-series Directed by Bruce Beresford Join Director Bruce Beresford for a special Noosa Long Weekend Festival screening of his new 2 part mini-series, followed by an In Conversation opportunity with the Director and Peter Thompson. Bonnie and Clyde One of the most acclaimed movies of the ‘60s, Bonnie and Clyde, gets a TV update with Emile Hirsch and Holliday Grainger in the lead roles, and a great support cast including; Holly Hunter, William Hurt and Frank Hamer.
Bruce Beresford’s version of Bonnie and Clyde is part-prequel and part-remake. We learn where Bonnie and Clyde are from and how they came together. A wannabe Hollywood actress, the glamorous Parker turns disappointment into alienation. When Barrow comes a-courting, she likes his style (and money) and decides to take on a new role as a Depression-era Annie Oakley. She’s obsessed with having top billing, hence Bonnie & Clyde, rather than the other way around.
Seriously outnumbered and outgunned, the Barrow Gang steals one classic car after another (mostly Fords, Clyde’s favorite) as they motor around the Midwest, for the most part eluding the posse along the way. But their days are numbered, as is always the case with anti-heroes. It’s a brutal, expected finale.

Brent Lyall (Adam Flower) has it all. At 23 years old he has a beautiful girlfriend, two Brownlow medals, and he’s already the captain of one of the most powerful football clubs in the land. There’s just one small hitch....... occasionally he enjoys dressing up..... in women’s clothes. Uncovering his client’s penchant for cross dressing, Brent’s wily agent Rohan Swift (Frank Wilkie) swings into damage control to prevent the devastating truth from coming out. The media already has a whiff of the story and the humiliation of a public outing would spell the end of
the athlete’s career, not to mention the mountains of cash they’re both making through endorsements. Inevitably, the AFL player’s addiction is irrepressible and his alter ego must be set free. With more than 40 years in the business and a string of box office successes, David Williamson (The Club, Don’s Party, Let the Sunshine) has earned a reputation as our country’s most popular and successful playwright. Managing Carmen is Williamson’s laugh-out-loud instalment,
holding a mirror up to the personalities we’ve all come to love and hate - the whatever-it-takes businessman, the bimbo trophy wife, and of course, the flawed footy hero.

Presented by Noosa Long Weekend Festival in Association with The University of the Sunshine Coast
There is an increasingly bitter debate being played out in the Australian media about bias in reporting and presenting. The debate extends beyond political issues and has even resulted in legal action on the part of media players. This forum looks at the impact on community trust in the media and its reporting and on the integrity of the various media organisations. Who are the major participants in this arena? Moderator for this forum will be Paul Barclay, presenter and series producer of Big Ideas on ABC RN.
Hedley Thomas Hedley has been an investigative journalist with The Australian since 2006. Prior to that he worked for the South China Morning Post, The Courier Mail and the Gold Coast Bulletin. Hedley is the winner of the prestigious Walkley Award for journalism on five separate occasions. Andrew Jaspan Andrew is the Executive Director and Editor in Chief of The Conversation online publication, with thirty years experience in publishing, extending from the UK to France and Australia.
The Panel for this Forum will feature the following speakers:

Architecture Should architecture be an expression of local identity?
For Noosa and the Sunshine Coast this is an issue that raises important questions, including: Should regional character be consciously sustained through selective references to the past?
Presented by Noosa Long Weekend Festival in Association with The University of the Sunshine Coast
Should response to climate and the use of locally available materials unconsciously define place?
Like politics, should all architecture be local? Rem Koolhaas, the prominent Dutch architect, suggests there is no such thing as local architecture any more – that modern conditions have overtaken our ability to differentiate architecture and our communities from one place to the next.
Where pressures of growth lead to distinguishing styles or qualities being subsumed by a sameness of new architecture, these questions become even more significant. Three of Australia’s most celebrated architects – Peter Stutchbury, noted for architecture that reflects place; Norwegian born and trained architect Brit Andresen, now living in Brisbane, noted

Reinventing Retirement
She has written a thought provoking book entitled In Praise of Ageing where she turns her attention to ageing policy in Australia.
Presented by Noosa Long Weekend Festival in Association with the University of the Sunshine Coast and RSL Care
Australians are now living longer and there are proportionally more of us over the age of 60 than any time in our history. Baby boomers are challenging current negative stereotypes of older people and rather than accepting that retirement means moving from paid work to a lifetime of leisure, some are exploring and entering into new careers and finding new pathways to remain active members of the community. This forum explores the concept of a more positive approach to ageing from a policy, academic and personal perspective. Speakers: Dr Patricia Edgar AM, is a sociologist, educator, film and television producer, writer, researcher, and policy analyst.
Dennis Atkins, former political adviser and now national affairs editor for The CourierMail; and Malcolm Farr, one of Australia’s most interesting and influential journalists and national political editor for news.com. au will take the nation’s political pulse and answer questions about behind-thescenes Canberra. There will be video footage - both profound and perplexing - of announcements by our leaders. And Barrie will invite the panel’s observations and predictions - an invitation that has produced some sensational (and accurate) forecasts in the past. As always this will be a sell-out and notto-be-missed event. Book now to avoid disappointment.
And what about Bill Shorten? Is he leading an effective Opposition with effective alternative policies on key issues? For the 8th consecutive year, Barrie Cassidy brings Insiders to Noosa where he and his colleagues Niki Savva, author, former political adviser to Treasurer Peter Costello and Prime Minister John Howard, self-described “conservative leftie” and now a columnist for The Australian.
Val French AM, is a journalist and academic, President and Founder of Older People Speak Out (OPSO) and has a Centenary Medal and Commonwealth Senior Achiever Medal. Val is very active in lobbying for the rights of older people. Adele Horin was the social issues columnist and journalist with the Sydney Morning Herald for 18 years. In 2012 she retired from the SMH and set up her blog Coming of Age which explores how her generation is meeting the challenge of getting older. Andrew Van Fleet is forty-nine and feeling fifty closing in. He’s bailed out of his private equity job for something that’ll let him spend more time at home, but the house is overrun by iPads and teenage hormones and conversations that have moved on without him. Plus his ailing father is now lodged in the granny flat, convalescing from surgery
and with his scrappy bulldog in tow. And then there’s Brian Brightman, the expensive fading star at the radio station Andrew’s signed up to manage, whose every broadcast offers fresh trouble. He’s forty-nine too and, like Andrew, starting to wonder if the twenty-first century might prove to be his second best.

Anna Goldsworthy Piano Lessons
Piano Lessons is a story of the getting of wisdom, tender and bittersweet. In this superb and original memoir, Anna Goldsworthy recalls her first steps towards a life in music, from childhood piano lessons with a local rock muso to international fame as a concert pianist. As she discovers passion and ambition, and confronts doubt and disappointment, she learns about much more than tone and technique.
“...one of the most affecting and beautifully composed memoirs of recent years.” The Sydney Morning Herald
LITERATURE
Goldsworthy evokes the hopes and uncertainties of young adulthood, the fear and exhilaration of performing, and the complex bonds between teacher and student. An unforgettable cast of characters joins her, drawn with wit and affection: her parents; her fellow musicians, both friends and rivals; and her schoolmates, in all their teenage glory. Above all there is her teacher, Mrs Sivan, enigmatic, charismatic and intimidating all at once.
