EDITOR’S LETTER

fter a year of planning and assembling our team, we finally have our first issue. It feels wonderful! We have an amazing team of determined, intelligent, and talented students. We’ve spent many hours laboring over this issue and deciding what would be the right route to take (it is our first issue after all). We wanted it to be perfect! So we found some of the best photographers and some of the best models to be featured for our photo editorials. We also had the pleasure of doing a feature on MarQueis Gray (check it out on page 22). I hope you find the articles and editorials interesting, inspiring, and helpful. If you’re interested in working with us next year, we would love to have you on the team. We have so many different opportunities ranging from writing, to graphic design, to web development, to photographing, and more. Just shoot us an email: trax@umn.edu. Now, I’m going to start this issue with some internship advice. I’ve been lucky to have held three internships so far in my college career, and after this summer, it will be four. I’ve also been fourtunate enough to have held two of them in New York City- the Mecca of fashion. I am the Intern Queen Campus Ambassador for the University of Minnesota. The Intern Queen offers some amazing advice. Now it’s my turn to offer that advice to you from my personal experiences. I’m going to tell you my top two pieces of advice. You might have heard them before, but I’m putting my own spin on things. In New York, I was a fashion intern at Charlotte Ronson and a social media intern at Dauphines of New York. I interned at each two days a week and spent my weekends exploring the City. It was an amazing experience and I recommend that if you can, go out of state to intern! Here are two pieces of advice that I have found to be quite helpful: #1-Network

#2-Intern with a Small and a Large Company

I know you have all heard this a million times, but one more time won’t hurt. One common misconception is that you should only go to networking events within your industry to meet people you would like to work with in the future. This is true, however most people stop at that. I would recommend networking with every single person you meet. Network with the students in your classes, the person sitting next to you on an airplane, etc. My friend once spoke with the man seated next to her on a plane for the entire ride. It turned out that he worked for the band that she was flying to see and he gave her free tickets and a backstage pass. Yes, I know this isn’t intern related, but it’s proof that you never know who you may be talking to; so network and be nice! You never know what that connection may bring, so keep in touch as well!

While I was in New York City, I interned for both sizes of companies. I learned so many different things from each experience. I feel that has made me a more well-rounded candidate. The small company I interned for was a start-up company, so I was able to learn all about how the company started out. This opportunity allowed me to prove that I was really good at social networking. Since then, I have over quadrupled the amount of Twitter traffic for the brand, and I was able to see everything from a different perspective. There weren’t rules already in place and there were no set PR strategies. These were the things that changed daily. It was a fun, interesting, and challenging experience. Interning with a large company is great too. You learn the inner-workings of the company/industry, their structure, and ultimately, you will have a well-known name to put on your resume.

FROM THE RUNWAY...

TO YOUR CLOSET!

It is not such a little known fact that color blocking is a hot new trend and it was definitely displayed in this spring’s fashion shows. Big trendsetters including DVF and Badgley Mischka showed their take on the fad. Another trend of the upcoming season is patterned jeans. With that said, a lot of people, including myself, myself, find it difficult to find something to pair with the bold patterns. We all know that very few college students have the budget to afford these designer threads so here are a few trendy outfit ideas that will work for a college budget. CITIES SUMMER FA With the end of classes coming, many students have opted to stay in Minneapolis over the summer. For some, it is their first summer in the Cities. On the hot, humid days it can seem difficult to find activities to do, and even harder to decide how to dress. The Cities have a wide range of places for students to visit during the summer. -Emily Wells

EXCELSIOR

is a small lake town known for its picturesque streets and boutiques. The town is located on the shores of Lake Minnetonka; home to sailing enthusiasts from around the Cities. Excelsior is a great spot to grab brunch, window-shop, and snag some ice cream from Adele’s with the girls. This is a slightly more traditional town, so it is best to keep outfits classic and chic. A simple floral dress with a light shrug looks great with bold, patterned wedges. Or throw on a pair of boat shoes with pastel capris and a chiffon blouse. Add a retro spin to your look with round sunglasses that have a colored frame, while keeping hair sleek with a chignon bun.

runs parallel to the Mississippi river and offers gorgeous views of the Minneapolis skyline, especially at night. Take a walk across the Stone Arch Bridge for the best scenery. This area is perfect for evening dates because of the wide range of restaurants and an old fashioned movie theater. Pick up some delicious gelato from the Wilde Roast and sit outside at the Aster Cafe to see the amazing fireworks during Minneapolis’ Aquatennial. The perfect outfit for St. Anthony is a little black dress with a modern twist. Take inspiration from the Aquatennial fireworks by creating a striking look with neon accessories against your black dress. Wear an orange, chunky necklace, pink shoes, and add a yellow clutch to complete the look.

ASHION

LAKE CALHOUN which is located in trendy Uptown, is a hot-spot for the single 20and 30-somethings of the Cities. The paths surrounding the lake are optimal for roller-blading, jogging, and biking. The park areas allow for picnics and fun games of volleyball. The nicest part of Lake Calhoun is the stretches of beach scattered along the shore. Since Uptown is a more hip area, it calls for a fashion-forward outfit. It can be challenging to look cute when trying to remain cool on the beach. The basis for this outfit is a solid colored one piece or bikini. Show off your swimsuit with a sheer, patterned hi-lo dress --a must have for this season. A hi-lo dress lets you show off your shoes without requiring heels like a maxi dress. The best kind of shoe for this dress would be lace-up or gladiator sandal. This helps to balance the amount of leg show by the dress. A floppy hat will keep you looking mysterious as you lounge with a magazine.

TWIN CITIES FASH We do the leg work, you get the best advice for unique fashion finds that fit your style and budget! -Emilie Radigan

I

t’s a sunny Friday afternoon and I decide it’s the perfect day to hop on the number 6 Metro Transit bus down Hennepin Ave to my favorite area of Minneapolis: Uptown. If you’re a student here at the University from out of town and have never heard of it, it’s a Minneapolis must-see! And if you’re from the Twin Cities and have never been, I just can’t believe it! Amongst an array of great restaurants (Chino Latino comes highly recommended) and your usual pick of chain retailers such as Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Heart Breaker, and Victoria’s Secret you also find some of the friendliest and unique boutiques in the area. My first surprise find was VState Clothing. A small, modern boutique, this store seeks out the freshest designs from New York to Los Angeles while still keeping a modest price point. This is the perfect place to find that unique dress or outfit for a special occasion or night out, because they only order two items in each size and never re-order, so get it while you can! And don’t worry there is a sale rack for those of us looking for a great deal!

HION FINDS Continuing down Hennepin, my next stop is one of my old favorites, Everyday People. This is a great thrifty find for any college student on a budget. A range of vintage and newer styles, this thrift store offers a great range of items for crazy low prices. I happened to score a BCBGMAXAZRIA vest for only $10! Everyday People will also buy or trade your old clothing daily, so whether you’re buying or selling, check them out!

A little way down the street is Cynthia Rae, a brand new boutique to the area. Run by Cynthia herself, this boutique offers her own designs mixed in with other designer pieces. This little shop describes itself as “a fun, funky and highly affordable boutique for girly girls” and it most certainly is! If you love prints and bright colors, you will adore this store. You won’t find these designs anywhere else and they only offer a limited quantity of each so it’s another great place to find that one of a kind outfit to make your friends jealous, while also supporting our local designers.

Right next door to Cynthia Rae is Local Motion. This boutique is a little more reserved than the others and higher up on the price scale. However, it offers high quality garments and its dress collection is to die for! While there is no clearance rack, the store does offer the occasional promotion. This Friday happened to offer 20% storewide, and I couldn’t help myself-I had to buy a shirt. Great location if you’re looking to treat yourself to a cute dress or find some high quality pieces for your wardrobe. SPRING

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

TRAX conrtibutor Emilie Radigan sat down with a few of this year’s seniors from the Apparel Design Program and asked them to share a little bit about their experiences and aspirations as designers.

By Emilie Radigan

LIZZIE HILLMANN What is your inspiration? I find most of my design inspiration from architecture. I am fascinated by the juxtaposition of intricate details with the magnificent impact of a building.

CAROL FALLABECK What is your dream job? I would actually really love to be a fashion illustrator such for a pattern company or even as an instructor. It’s the purest form of fashion as art and a very big passion of mine.

JENNIFER ROBERTUS What is your inspiration?

TRAX SPRING 2012

I’ve learned that my inspiration often comes from feelings and experiences. My senior line was inspired by the sensation of sunbathing with a cool breeze blowing across the body. I envision a moment like this and can start seeing colors, movements, the feeling of textiles.

ANDREA SITTLER What got you into fashion? The whole art form of creating clothing has always fascinated me, the possibilities are endless. I view clothing as an extension of the body - an accentuation of personality.

SARA LOPEZ Any advice for future apparel design majors? Stay true to who you are as a designer because that is where you will really thrive. Find your design world and go wild! Push yourself and challenge the norm.

KARI KACHELMACHER What is your dream job? As of this moment, I would love to work for Mulberry or Kate Spade as an assistant designer, and hopefully become a senior designer at some point. I dig their aesthetics.

LAURA VAN RIPER What is your dream job? Beginning my own line of formalwear. I’d also love to work for Givenchy, Rodarte, or Monique Lhuillier.

GOPHER SPIRIT!

With football season around the corner, it’s time to start preparing for the games. Let’s show our rivals what Minnesota pride is all about by giving our team the best fan section TCF Bank Stadium has ever seen! By following these simple steps, you can transform yourself from a U of M student to a Gopher Football Superfan. -Lucy Rymes

Step 1 Get your season tickets early people! The 2012 season tickets are now available for purchase. You don’t want to be the only one of your friends without them. For more information on how to order, go to gophersports.com or call the Fan Relations Office at 612-624-8080.

Step 2

For goodness sake, know your rouser! Floyd M. Hutsell wrote the Minnesota Rouser in 1909 in response to a contest in the Minnesota Tribune. It is one of the two official University of Minnesota songs, including Hail! Minnesota. Knowing the words to this song is essential when attending any Minnesota sporting event. Nothing feels more exhilarating than doing the spell-out after a Gopher touchdown. The lyrics are below:

MINNESOTA ROUSER MINNESOTA, HATS OFF TO THEE! TO THY COLORS TRUE WE SHALL EVER BE, FIRM AND STRONG, UNITED ARE WE. RAH, RAH, RAH FOR SKI-U-MAH, RAH! RAH! RAH! RAH! RAH FOR THE U OF M.

16

TRAX SPRING 2012

ENTERTAINMENT HAIL! MINNESOTA MINNESTOA, HAIL TO THEE, HAIL TO THEE OUR COLLEGE DEAR.
THY LIGHT SHALL EVER BE A BEACON BRIGHT AND CLEAR.
THY SONS AND DAUGHTERS TRUE WILL PROCLAIM THEE NEAR AND FAR.
 THEY WILL GUIDE THY FAME
AND ADORE THY NAME, THOU SHALT BE THEIR NORTHERN STAR.

Step 3 Tweet! Follow the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers (@GopherAthletics) on Twitter, and be the

first of your friends to get the scoop of what’s going on in the Gopher Nation. Goldy Gopher himself also has a Twitter account. Check out his cute pics and updates via @GoldytheGopher!

Step 4

Know your history- Ski-U-Mah! Many fans will utter this coined phrase, without actually knowing the meaning, but to be a true Gopher superfan it’s important to know the history behind it. Ski-U-Mah is a phrase that Minnesota fans have been chanting at games for almost 130 years. Two rugby players who were trying to come up with an intimidating chant the team could scream during games created it in 1884. “Ski” is a Sioux word that means “victory”, combined with “U-Mah” means victory for Minnesota.

Step 5 Hail! Minnesota! Hail! Minnesota is a school song held near and dear to fans’ hearts. At the end of each

game, whether Minnesota wins or loses, the team circles up, and fans join in to sing Hail! Minnesota. The lyrics to the song are always displayed on the big screen, but if you want to show off your knowledge and become a true Gopher Fan, memorize the lyrics above. BEST BEAUTY BUY Ever had problems finding the right foundation color? Or finding a mascara that doesn’t clump? Based on my past experiences with makeup, the products mentioned are my favorite and are highly recommended to purchase, regardless of the price. Each recommended product also solves some sort of beauty flaw every woman has encountered. -Justine Phan

SKIN Bobbi Brown Foundation is different than others. Each foundation color has a yellow tint in the formula, which makes the color look natural on the skin. The foundation is on the expensive side, but the natural color makes the skin look flawless so you can’t even tell you’re wearing makeup. If you go to a department store, such as Macy’s at Rosedale Mall, the makeup artist will help you find a color that best matches your skin. ($46)

Bobbi Brown Touch Up Stick is a must have beauty

product. It conceals the redness in pimples, which makes it look like you don’t have any blemishes. This is my favorite makeup product and I highly recommend purchasing it. Again, go to a department store that carries Bobbi Brown products and a makeup artist will gladly help you find the color that best suits your skin. ($23)

*HINT

After applying the concealer on your blemishes, finish off with brushing translucent powder. This will help the concealer stay longer on your face.

Nars Blush has great colors for different skin types that give a healthy natural

looking complexion that won’t make you look like a clown. “Penny Lane” is a great color for light skin tones, and “Exhibit A” looks great on dark skin tones. You can go onto the Nars website and it will tell you what colors look great on different skin tones. ($28)

LIPS

True Cream Lip Color in “Sunset Rhythm” which can

be found at Sephora, is also a great color to have. Tangerine lipstick is a lovely alternative for those who love red lipstick. It stays on all night and looks beautiful on all skin types. ($12)

*HINT If you like to apply lip gloss and ends up to be too glossy, tap translucent powder onto your lips for a more natural and matte look.

EYES Revlon ColorStay 12-Hour Eye Shadow in “Coffee Bean” is a nice natural color. It is long-lasting and the product has several colors to choose from if you are looking for more variety. ($6)

*HINT Before applying eye shadow on your eyes, use concealer or foundation as a primer for your eyes, this will make the eye shadow last all night long.

Almay Eye Liner does an amazing job of not smudging. The eyeliner stays on all night without getting those dark smudges under your eyes. ($6)

*HINT After applying eyeliner, use a dark brown or black eye shadow and line it on top of the eyeliner to have it last longer.

Maybelline New York The Falsies Volum’ Express Mascara is the best one I have found. It gives lots of volume and does not create clumps on your eyelashes. ($8)

*HINT If you have a problem keeping your eyelashes curled use waterproof mascara.

TRAX SPRING SPRING 2012

Arriving at TCF Bank Stadium with another TRAX contributor, I was anxious to meet the man responsible for the buzz around campus. Whether it’s a Gopher home game or the birth of his two twin boys, fans love to talk about the Golden Gopher’s starting quarterback, MarQueis Gray. As we approached the many entrances of the stadium, Justine and I worried if they would give us permission to wander around, or if we’d have to wait. It soon became clear that with a little name-dropping, we could get access to the field, locker room, and the key to some private and very exclusive suites. In true celebrity fashion, MarQueis arrived about twenty minutes late. But soon all was forgiven when we saw he brought his girlfriend and their four-month old twin boys. Before long, their sons MarZell and MarShawn were surrounded by our group gushing over how adorable they looked. Just like their dad, the twins are growing big---fast. At four months old the boys are wearing twelvemonth old clothes. MarQueis held the boys and sweetly talked to them out loud. Even in the bright sunlight and being moved around for a few family pictures, the twins continued to sleep. For the first time, we saw a glimpse of MarQueis Gray, the father. MarQueis, originally from Indiana, was brought into the game by his father. Years ago his dad played football at a small college. Passion for football is a running trend (no pun intended) in this family and MarQueis assures us that his sons will one day play too. Besides his father, MarQueis is inspired by NFL quarterback Payton Manning. MarQueis believes Payton is a true leader and is great at what he does by the way he studies the game. Practice, repetition, hard work, and sweat will enable you to accomplish any goal. (continued on page 28)

These principles were taught to him by Coach Jerry Kill. When asked how he likes playing for Kill, MarQueis responded, “Most people think he’s crazy or mean, but he’s got a good heart. [He’s a] clear thinker.” MarQueis stays in shape with cardio and weight training workouts five days a week, beginning at 5 a.m. each morning. MarQueis stresses the dynamic of family for a successful team. Every morning the team trains together and eats breakfast together. Big personalities like corner back Steve Montgomery and running back David Cobb keep the family bonded with pranks and jokes. MarQueis’s favorite memory is beating Iowa the last two years. MarQueis describes, “The whole teams clicked; everybody was on.” After the game, fans stormed the field to celebrate with the Gopher champions. When asked how his life has changed since the birth of his sons, MarQueis says he doesn’t go out as much as he used to. He generally spends a lot of time playing with his sons and changing dirty diapers. MarQueis goes on to describe, “It’s so gross…they’re like grown men when they pass gas; it is so loud.” It is also hard at times to balance homework and football, because as soon as he goes home “it’s baby-time.” MarQueis has realized there are many similarities between a quarterback and a father. For both, you need to be a leader, responsible, role model, and set a good example. MarQueis describes his style as comfortable, but he can rock a suit at times for important meetings or church. At 6’4” and 240 pounds, MarQueis sometimes has difficulty finding clothes that fit properly. He does most of his shopping online and through special orders. MarQueis’s favorite fashion trend for girls is yoga pants with UGG boots. His least favorite fashion trend for guys is skinny jeans. He thinks they would be extremely uncomfortable. MarQueis shares a similarity with football stars Troy Polamalu and Clay Matthews--great hair. For two years he has maintained gorgeous shoulder length dreadlocks, which have to be touched up every month. MarQueis will graduate this summer with a Bachelor’s Degree in Youth Studies from the university. He then will have one year left of eligibility to play for the Golden Gophers. The 22-year old tells TRAX that his hope for the future is to be drafted by the NFL. When you think of a football player or athlete, some engrained stereotypes may come to mind. MarQueis Gray is none of those stereotypes. The man I met is charismatic, laid back, funny, and caring. He stayed at the photo shoot for over four hours and went through several wardrobe changes, and not once asked when we would be done. He was professional, had a great attitude, and I speak on behalf of TRAX when I say we were thoroughly impressed. Looking forward to next season---Go Gophers!
