Funding is limited.
In 2023, the state added another homeownership incentive program that broadened the scope of potential applicants. The Florida Hometown Heroes Housing Program makes homeownership affordable for eligible community workforce. This program provides down payment and closing cost assistance to first-time, income-qualified homebuyers so they can purchase a primary
residence in the community in which they work and serve.
Still, with these worthwhile programs in place, there is more that can be done and that is where in St. Lucie County the realtors stepped in. The St. Lucie Charitable Foundation of the Broward, Palm Beaches & St. Lucie Realtors® is a 501c3 that raises and distributes funds to assist with home purchases within the county. Couple those with stairs and throw in a piano and the thought of moving yourself become a bit more daunting. River Roamin’ in Florida’s Big Bend
Summer is a great time to travel north in Florida. Throughout much of the top of the state, there are spring fed rivers and popular springheads that make it easy for families to cool off and explore the crystal-clear waterways. In the big bend area, we were surprised by how diverse the gulf waters of the Forgotten Coast proved to be. Of course, knowing that the distance was great from our home in the Treasure Coast area, we planned a full 9 days of travel to maximize the rivers we could accomplish.
First stop, Ocklockonee River State Park with a popular boat ramp, campground was beautiful with lots of young deer and pine forests on either side, and a swimming area our dog, Seger loved. Day two we were up and ready to river roam, the weather was perfect and with our son fast asleep, we made it to the Dead River to access the Apalachee Bay to fish the saltwater and its bridges, however once out in the big open water it became choppy, and we ended up turning around. From there the dark waters led us to the Sopchoppy River which seemed fitting after our river rodeo session. Near the campground again, we found an island and floated savoring the fact that rivers 64-66 were complete.
it was just a short 30-minute drive east to the town of St. Mark’s for Shell Island Fish Camp. Equipped with a fully functioning marina, offering dry and wet boat storage, icehouse, general store, live bait and lodging it was a spot our son was looking forward to. Here, mom and dad stayed in the slide-in camper at spot #1 that offered covered picnic tables and waterfront complete with teenaged alligator. While Charlie enjoyed a two double beds and personal bathroom in the motel section of camp.
Jeff, the owner of the fish camp, encouraged us to stay in the center of the Wakulla River during low tide while all the seagrasses parted and made a simple path to follow. A two-hour tool and the head of the springs unveiled a popular state park and rental facility that looked like a castle, super impressive!
Our son called it an early night and shortly thereafter we met a father with daughters looking to pull their boat in, he shared that this was an annual dad and kid scallop trip and shared their favorite spot. With sliders prepped and snacks packed, we set out for the scallop spot via the St. Mark’s River, #71. A few hours later we found our spot and the boys put on their goggles and flippers, it was our first time, and it was so cool!
Next day, we drove thirty minutes west to the town of Carabelle. A seaside village, proud of its rich history with black baseball and full of small seafood restaurants. Our river roamer had us on the Carabelle River handling its shallow waters with ease. Many houses and businesses lined the river on both sides before finally showing off its natural side with large cattails and rock lined walls entering the freshwater. By veering slightly to the left, we entered our 68th river, Franklin County’s New River, at the 68th mile marker. We then shot across the bayou to access our 69th river, the Crooked River where we found a waterfront campsite at the top of a hillside, what a view!

In Dunnellon, we rented a house, and the owners provided a free golf cart to use along with paddle boards, kayaks, and a fun basketball game. The house came stocked with lots of plastic ware to put chips, sandwiches, and fruit in as well as River Life cups so no one time use items were on the river, a strict rule for the Rainbow River. The owner of our rental, he suggested we take our boat towards the head of the spring and then anchor out where it says no more motors then paddle boarding to the headspring, we did. Our son, Charlie, was a paddle boarding natura. River #72 complete with colorful tubes and happy tubers all around us. An adventure filled eight-night trip with mom’s birthday at the end; what a way to explore Florida! See you on the rivers!
