When trying to minimize your sugar intake, reading food labels is so important because sugars are hiding everywhere in our food!
Tip #1 - Every 4 grams of sugar on the label is approximately 1 teaspoon of sugar. If a serving has 12 grams of sugar, there are 3 teaspoons of sugar in that serving. Tip #2 - There are blood sugar elevators that are not listed in the sugars on the label. They are not “technically” sugars but they elevate your blood sugar the same way sugar would or worse. There are many of these, but two of them that are most prevalent are Maltodextrin and Dextrose. You will find either or both of these in many processed foods!

By Anna Valencia TilleryJacksonville Rivers Completing 73-80
Boat loaded and road trip snacks ready to serve, we jumped on I95 North for 3.5 hours for Jacksonville abound with traffic, rivers, and multiple neighborhoods each with their own identity. For this trip, we rented a small cottage via Airbnb. After parking the boat and trailer, we off loaded the truck and discovered quickly we were missing some of the items we needed for the three nights so our son, Charlie, and dog, Seger stayed at the cottage while mom and dad set out for the Winn Dixie. Complete with armed guard at the entrance, we found everything we needed at the store and during the drive, was able to assess casual bike rides in this area was not going to be as peaceful as we had thought when loading up earlier in the day. So, we got back and hunkered in to rest for the next day.
With a bit of overcast, the morning was blissfully slow as we circled around the I95 exit ramp trying to find the public boat ramp; it was good to know none of us were in a hurry. Sadly, the public space was filled with trash, both in the parking lot and in the water, complete with a sunken boat. Though, once we were on the water of the Trout River, our 73rd, it was clear that the port of Jacksonville was thriving and full of big business from cargo shipping container yards to cruise ships and giant freightliners. As we headed east for the Intercoastal, our family took a small tour down the Broward River then sidelined some of the mega ships for a shortcut that led us to Brown’s Creek Fish camp. While inside, we stocked up on shrimp and fiddler crabs for fishing; it was a great experience with friendly staff and lots of families fishing from the ledge.
Back on our journey, we were able to tap into the Fort George, Mud, Nassau, and South Amelia Rivers. Before heading back in, we filled up with fuel at a local marina…dad was quite concerned we were going to run out of gas; thankfully, we did not. Having some simple sliders on the boat with lots of fresh mandarins, we were quite hungry and excited to try the neighborhood’s signature pizza parlor, Joseph’s. Though the pizza was quite good, the stromboli and lasagna we tried were not as tasty. However, it was an extra bonus when the neighbors came over with a tray of fresh sushi and rum cake dessert bites from their wedding that day. Our son enjoyed the extra food items and encouraged us to go visit with them outside on the large party space complete with pool table, hot tub, and dancefloor. It was fun to meet them all and hear about their nuptials, a special time indeed.
Next morning, we knew that the day would not be as travel based as the day prior, so we took our time getting up and heading out. The next public boat ramp put us directly on the Ribault River, though it too was full of trash and an abandoned boat. However, at this ramp, there was a young man fishing, and we happily shared our fiddler crabs with him so he could try those while fishing from the bench, it was a sign that it was going to be a great day. The goal for the day was to make it to the Little Trout River while making time to fish and enjoy a fresh bologna and ham slider for lunch. We managed to accomplish it all, even if we only caught two tiny catfish and gave away all the rest of our bait. Still, the weather that Sunday was perfect and the music with the family bonding onboard could not be beat.
Back at the property, new neighbors arrived with their own small fishing boat and impressive dj equipment. The three men from Georgia were having a guys fishing trip and were kind enough to share their music and stories with us for a bit. After a dinner from Hip Hop Chicken & Fish, Michael played the one guy, Napoleon, is a few games of pool before we turned in knowing a four-hour journey home awaited us.
All in all, it was a memorable trip with eight rivers accomplished and plenty of great conversation on our boat and back at the pad. Though we would have liked for the property to have been in better condition, it did provide us a convenient location to complete our mission wrapping up the rivers of NE Florida, a total of 80 now under our belts. What an adventure friends, see you on the river!

REALTOR RV TRIP
SHORT BUT STILL SWEET
Our Winnebago motorhome had just rolled into the sweetest place on earth when the bitter news came. In seconds, our delicious plans to explore Hershey, Pa and gorge on the famous candy bars melted away faster than chocolate on a hot sidewalk. My husband Chris and I had Covid-19.
It was a cruel ending to our 7th annual vacation-on-wheels that began Aug. 21st under the ominous threat of Hurricane ldelia. Before the Cat 3 hurricane made landfall on Florida’s West Coast, we left our Palm City home on the East Coast and headed north. We successfully escaped heavy winds and rain as the storm spiraled across the state and southern Georgia. Little did we know that another threat was looming with a different kind of punch.
Sadly, our 30-day road trip -- which survived a blown tire and engine troubles - was abruptly cut in half. But like the sweet filling of an Oreo cookie, the middle part of our journey made the whole vacation palatable.
With my hubby at the wheel and me as navigator/go-fer, we crossed 11 state lines for 4,024 miles to the classic sounds of Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. Our itinerary was loose: See family and friends and google for tourist attractions on the way.
In upstate New York, we explored the Finger Lakes region on a scenic drive around Seneca Lake with restaurants, vineyards and brew crafters at every bend. Later, we hiked 2 miles through waterfalls and gorges in Watkins Glen, the most famous of the Finger Lake state parks.
Goat Island was our Labor Day destination to behold the power and rage of Niagra Falls. Nearby is the historic village of Lewiston on the Niagra River revered to be the final stop on the Underground Railroad. Our last stop in NY was the Lucy Desi Museum in the famous redhead’s hometown of Jamestown. Exhibits feature costumes, props, studio sets and footage of comedic skits, including Lucy’s hilarious TV commercial for the high alcohol health elixir, “Vitameatavegamin.”
In North Adams, Ma, we toured Mass MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) in a 100,000-square-foot former textile factory. Six upside down living maple trees outside the entrance foretell the unusual sights within, including a 260-foot-long pink rollercoaster for one.
Mother nature needed no GPS, beauty was everywhere. A hearty flock of white swans gliding silently on a Georgia lake. Subtle hints of fall foliage in the Shenandoah Valley. Star gazing devoid of urban lights was a nightly ritual with campfires and s’mores.
A google search south of Atlanta, Ga led to the “Road to Tara Museum” with GONE WITH THE WIND movie memorabilia, gowns, photos and scripts. Don’t miss the actual pantalettes worn in the 1939 film by Vivien Leigh to get a slimmer waist with Mammy’s help.
A state park in Tennessee marked the 1786 birthplace of legendary frontiersman Davy Crockett with a replica of his log cabin. As a Realtor, I wondered how someone would market such a dwelling: Rustic chic, well ventilated, no HOA?

Then, Covid-19 struck and it was home to quarantine. There would be no trips to the Hershey Story Museum, North Carolina’s Ava Gardner Museum or Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia.
Doom and gloom was in the driver’s seat when a marker on 1-95 in Virginia caught my eye as the designated death site of Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. A google search confirmed the Confederate General was accidentally shot by friendly fire and died in 1863.
We thought we were having a bad day.
Strange as it seems, the festoon of souvenir magnets on our RV fridge was an epiphany. The eclectic cluster fondly symbolized our travels from Mount Rushmore and Gettysburg to Niagra Falls. There’s still room for more magnets with new adventures in 2024.
The Hershey Story Museum is sure to be one of them.

Coping with the Loss of a Beloved Pet
Losing a cherished pet can be an emotionally devastating experience. The bond we form with our pets is often deep and profound, making their absence profoundly felt. The significant impact this loss can have on our emotional well-being. In this article, we will explore various psychological strategies to help you cope with the loss of a pet and navigate the grieving process.
1. Allow Yourself to Grieve: It’s important to recognize that grieving the loss of a pet is a natural and healthy response. Give yourself permission to experience and express your emotions. Accept that it is normal to feel sadness, anger, guilt, or even a sense of emptiness. Acknowledging and accepting these feelings is an essential step towards healing.
2. Seek Support from Others: Share your grief with understanding friends, family members, or support groups who have also experienced pet loss. Talking about your feelings can provide comfort, validation, and an opportunity to reminisce about your pet’s life. Consider joining online communities or forums specifically dedicated to pet loss support.
3. Create a Tribute: Honoring your pet’s memory can aid in the healing process. Consider creating a tribute such as a photo album, a memorial video, or a personalized piece of artwork. This activity allows you to reflect on the positive moments shared with your pet, fostering a sense of gratitude amidst the sorrow.
4. Establish New Routines: Pets often play an integral role in our daily routines. After their loss, you may find it helpful to establish new routines and find alternative ways to occupy your time. Engaging in
activities like exercise, hobbies, or volunteering can help distract your mind and replace some of the void left by your pet’s absence.
5. Practice Self-Care: Grieving can be physically and mentally exhausting. Focus on self-care activities that promote relaxation and well-being. Engage in regular exercise, maintain a balanced and nutritious diet, get enough sleep, and consider practices like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or journaling to reduce stress and anxiety.
6. Consider Pet Bereavement Counseling: If your grief feels overwhelming or persists for an extended period, seeking professional help may be beneficial. Pet bereavement counselors are specially trained to support individuals coping with the loss of a beloved pet. They can provide a safe space to process emotions, explore coping strategies, and assist in navigating the grieving process.
7. Explore Memorializing Options: Some individuals find solace in memorializing their pet in creative and meaningful ways. Planting a tree or flowers in their honor, creating a memory box, or contributing to an animal charity in your pet’s name can provide a sense of closure and allow you to channel your love into positive actions.
Losing a pet is an emotionally challenging experience, but it is possible to heal and find comfort. Remember that everyone grieves differently, and there is no right or wrong way to mourn the loss of a beloved pet. By allowing yourself to grieve, seeking support, practicing self-care, and exploring various memorializing options, you can gradually find healing and peace in the memories of your dear companion.
