A taste of authentic Vietnamese flavors!
If you have driven oceanside on Seaway Drive through the curves full of fun restaurants, bars, plazas, and more; you have passed the Viet Bowl. Now, if you were like me and you sometimes fear the unknown when it comes to food, you will be happy to have picked up this magazine. Because we are going to highlight some of the must try items which will give you the confidence to order like you have been a Vietnamese cuisine connoisseur for years, and if you truly are that person who loves this flavorful food already, be sure to check out Viet Bowl for yourself. Walking in, the restaurant feels new and hip with lots of bright colors from the signage to the non-perishable Tik Tok trending snack wall that pops against the shiny, white floors/tables/ and walls. A guest counter greets you, complete with illuminated menu above. There is lots to choose from and with help from the staff, you will enjoy the ability to customize your order. Still, I am here to guide you an extra step further based on what the family members of this locally run restaurant shared as some of their favorite signature dishes. Perhaps the most widely known Vietnamese “go-to” in our region is Pho. There are lots of restaurants with it even in their name, yet none other seem to offer up as much creativity as Viet Bowl does. In fact, starting at just $13.99 you can have this tasty soup, known to cure a variety of ailments, complete with choice of two proteins and veggies. Of course, if you would prefer to have the chef’s guidance, that is an option. Chef’s Specials 18 though 22 steer customers into perfectly prepped bowls of Pho. Personal favorite since I enjoy a bit of spice, #22 the Bun Bo Hue, a lemongrass beef noodle soup. Whether you create your own or order off the chef’s curated options, it is served with a side of fresh herbs/citrus/bean sprout/and sauce to allow you to further enhance each bite to your liking, so much fun! Yet, with the weather in south Florida a bit hotter these days, something a little more refreshing might be in order? With every menu item available to enjoy inside the restaurant or to-go, many of the choices are perfect beachside selections. My preferred appetizer, the signature steamed summer roll with large, succulent shrimp and a fresh peanut sauce topped with crushed nuts for dipping. Chef Tony himself enjoys these daily. Of course, other fun pop-ables exist like veggie or meat gyoza dumplings, or their beyond
addicting salt & pepper shrimp or wings; bursting with flavor in each bite.
Other beach worthy food options include the banh mi, a Vietnamese sandwich on toasted French bread with choice of meat or tofu dressed in a homemade mayo, pickled veggies, cucumbers, and for extra brightness sprigs of cilantro.
Personally, the chargrilled sliced pork is the one I keep ordering with each visit, the balance of the salty pork and fresh vegetables is incredible.
For many, they cannot resist experimenting with some of the drinks Viet Bowl crafts. All made from scratch, they offer an extensive array of beverages. Enjoy their teas in exotic flavors such as: passion fruit, lychee, Thai tea, even strawberry lemonade and have it on the rocks or add Boba (tapioca filled jelly balls) or some popping pearls with various flavors to really have some excitement with each sip. If you enjoy iced coffee throughout the day, give their Vietnamese coffee a whirl. It is condensed milk with an Asian espresso, sweet and strong, good to the last drop.
Experiment with a custom noodle or rice bowl for your entrée or partake in the set chef creations such as the very popular, Special Rice Platter #26, chances are good it is one of the family members delivering your dishes tableside or in a to-go bag.
“Our dad has always had a passion for cooking since coming to California in the 80’s. Years later he opened his first restaurant and it’s been part of the family business alongside our nail salons ever since,” recalls Chef Tony’s youngest daughter Victoria. In fact, that #26 is her favorite thing to eat: soft jasmine rice is topped with fragrant shrimp, Korean BBQ short ribs, porkchop, fried egg, and pickled veggies. Then, on the side, a clear broth soup and sweet, limey garlic Viet-Mam dipping sauce.
When it comes to love of family, faith, and hard work, Chef Tony Tran leads the way. Demonstrating daily to ahis five kids, seven grandkids, and dozens of employees when you give, you receive. Annually, he and his wife, Brianna, donate countless hours to their temple’s big celebration cooking for thousands of people; yet each bite tastes as if it were made just for them. So, please do not be a stranger and support a family who puts great care into all they do. From fresh produce to sake and everything in between at their Oriental Market in Vero Beach’s Miracle Mile to nail designs that last for weeks at one of their two salons in Vero or Ft. Pierce, the Tran family welcomes your patronage and looks forward to having you be a customer that turns into a friend. Cheers!

Making Memories Exploring & Glamping

Wrapping Up All the Everglades’ Rivers
Via the Collier Seminole State Park
It took five trips to the Everglades to accomplish all the many wild, rural, fascinating rivers it holds. After having chartered Captain Bruce in our March trip, we ran out of time to hit the northern rivers inside the 10,000 Islands. So, we planned another quick trip for the first weekend in May. No Derby parties for us nor a first mate, as our son was away with his father for the weekend.
Shout out to Bass Pro in Port St. Lucie for getting our Bass Busy Sun Tracker pontoon boat ready to roam with a new steering cable. Conveniently, we arranged to pick it up while in route to the SW portion of the Everglades for our final visit for the river roaming mission. Of course, not having the boat to put stuff onto during transit made packing a bit puzzling. Still, we made it work and we felt excited for an adult only adventure that required no highways or hassle. Once our boat trailer was set, we headed south and took the 714 much of the way west, talk about beautiful backroads! I am convinced that Martin County has the most amount of Live Oak canopied roads both east and west of the highways, simply stunning!
Not being in a hurry allowed us to savor the sights during the drive. We finally arrived at Collier Seminole State Park, our second time in 15 months, well past when the ranger station closed. However, having been before, we knew where to park the boat. It was easy to setup camp with our new camper, though we realized that not having our pop-up tent for shade and shelter was a big no-no for future adventures.
Regardless, we enjoyed a quick stroll before getting the coals going to smoke chicken thighs for sandwiches.

It has been said that the mosquitos (all many hundreds of kinds of them) are worse from April to October in this part of Florida, it is a TRUE
statement friends! Our lucky spot #28, backed up to the preserve and we were quick to getting the citronella filled Tiki torches and fans going. Even with long sleeved shirts and pants, we were bit quite a bit. Regardless, it was not totally intolerable, and we had fun listening to music and playing Phase 10.
Next morning, we finalized our campsite registration. Then, we were off to the county boat ramp inside the Port of the Island Marina. Just five minutes east on the Tamiami Trail, lots of big yachts greeted us and caused a moment of anxiety for mom who is seldom the first mate in our adventures. Yet, it all worked out well and dad managed to squeeze into a parking spot. As waited for him and our dog, Seger, I saw dozens of slot snook; too bad it was a no fishing zone.
As we headed down the canal towards the Paradise Coast’s waters, it seemed as if each home had a boat or two; fishing is a way of life here.
One we started seeing various spoil islands, we had finally entered the Faka-Union River #114. A shell covered beach caught our eye, we stopped there and threw the stick a few times in the shallow, clear water so our pooch could frolic. The island had a giant pool in the middle of it, what a site to see!
Reading about the Daniels family had us talking about how challenging it must have been for the pioneer settlers of the wild west Everglade waters. Interestingly, there was an abandoned island cemetery in the vicinity accessible only via boa; we did not visit. Headed south, we entered the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park and explored our 115th river, the East River/10,000 Islands. Passed some fellow boaters on the Fakahatchee River #116; they were using the “enclosed portable boat bathroom” onboard their pontoon; it seems much easier to just tinkle off the back ladder…yet that is just me. Our second attempt at a soft beach for our dog worked and we all got off to explore and run around. It got rough when it was time to go, Seger thought he needed to save dad as he was pulling the anchor. As a result of trying to get the dog back on the boat, dad’s new wedding ring slipped off. It was a bummer, however, as we headed back towards the marina, we swayed northwest and managed to tap the Little Wood and Whitney Rivers for #117 and #118. What a day of exploration and sun!
Worth the drive down the backroads, this part of the Everglades was truly exciting to explore.
Happy river roaming!
Family Friendly Museums on the Treasure Coast
The Children’s Museum on the Treasure Coast is a family favorite for locals and perfect for sunny and rainy days. It’s easy to lose track of time at the museum because there’s so much to do and see. The museum has exhibits that kids will feel excited about, and there’s tons of space for kids to run around and be creative.
The Children’s Museum on the Treasure Coast is ideal for kids who like to pretend. Kids can pretend to be veterinarians, mechanics, engineers, race car drivers, firefighters, weather reporters, and more. Many kids gravitate to the fire station with a modern fire truck and second-story ladder. Other popular exhibits include the Sensory Room and the Race Car Simulator, which are the same type of simulator used by NASCAR IndyCar and Formula 1. There’s also a massive pirate ship and make-believe fishing boat set up.
Although the museum is suitable for kids of all ages, it’s probably better suited for children 12 and under. Admission is $8.50 for adults and $10 for children ages 1 to 17. Children under the age of one are free.
The National Navy UDT-Seal Museum is excellent for exploring military exhibits, including vehicles, boats, helicopters, weapons, and gear. Kids can learn about Navy missions through a collection of artifacts, interactive displays, and exhibits that bring to life the stories of the Navy Seals. There’s also a seal obstacle course that provides a glimpse of the training and preparation for Navy Seals.
The museum also features a memorial garden that honors the legacy and history of fallen soldiers. The museum is located in Fort Pierce, directly on the beach and next to a playground at Pepper Park Beach, which is great for kids who need to burn off extra energy. The museum is open from Tuesday through Sunday.
The McLarty Treasure Museum is located on A1A in Vero Beach. It’s a hidden gem and the perfect place to avoid the crowds. It’s also one of the most affordable museums on the Treasure Coast. Admission is only two dollars and free for children under six.
The McLarty Museum tells the story of a 1715 fleet of Spanish ships filled with gold, silver, and other riches. The ships were headed back to Spain when all eleven ships sank in a hurricane. Hundreds of years later, treasure hunters still work to recover the treasures lost during the storm.
The Vero Beach Museum of Art is a fantastic museum for all ages. It has a rotating display of interesting exhibits and always has something new to offer locals and visitors alike. The museum is inside a beautiful park in a great location in Vero Beach.
The museum has many interesting activities and programs for children. Every first Tuesday of the month, the Vero Beach Museum of Art hosts an event called Museum Babies and Toddlers. During the event, babies and their caregivers participate in art viewing and sensory experiences. During the week, the museum hosts programs for kids who want to read books, sing songs, dance, and create art together. The events all take place in a child-friendly area of the museum called the Children’s Art Zone.
The Florida Oceanographic Society established in 1964, is dedicated to promoting environmental stewardship of Florida’s coastal ecosystems. Located on Hutchinson Island, their Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center spans 57 acres between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean. Guests can explore a Stingray Tank and Invertebrate Touch Tank, as well as nature trails that wind through a mangrove forest. The center also has a 750,000-gallon Gamefish Lagoon, which is home to sea turtles, local species of sharks, and game fish. There is also the Ocean EcoCenter, a 5,000-square-foot space with 2,000 gallons of aquariums highlighting local fish and invertebrates. The EcoCenter also features educational interactives and games that aim to educate and inspire. Admission prices are $18 for general admission and $9 for ages 3 to 12. Children age 2 and under are free.
Mel Fisher’s Treasures in Sebastian, Florida, is a museum that displays artifacts from famous shipwrecks, including the Atocha, Santa Margarita, and the 1715 Shipwreck Fleet. The museum’s latest addition is a mural by artist Katherine Larson, showcasing the story of the 1715 Spanish Fleet and the ongoing efforts to recover its treasures. Visitors can also interact with a conquistador statue and try to unlock a trunk with a vintage key. The museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm.
