SECRETS TO PLAYROOM ORGANIZATION Throughout our daily lives, we often find ourselves with a fairly organized home. The kitchen is in order. The beds stay made most of the time. Our living room remains inviting for drop-by visits. However, as those with children may attest to, the playroom somehow stays the “Bermuda Triangle” of the house, confusing and messy enough to get lost in. Here are some secrets to getting that playroom under control.

PURGE IS THE WORD

Begin with four boxes: Keep, donate, trash, and other room. The toys that are broken, throw away without question. A toy that never held the interest of your child needs to be given away. Bath toys, clothing, the stolen remote control, or outdoors toys need to be put back in their proper places. If something is being held on to simply for nostalgia, i.e. little Johnny’s very first teddy bear, create a memory box or a special shelf for that item.

QUALITY NOT QUANTITY

Ask yourself: “Which toys does my child gravitate towards, and which toys does my child get bored with?” Perhaps not everything should be given away, but consider rotating the play things to create fresh interest. A clear bin or two can be filled with the less appealing items, labeled, and put into a closet. On a bi-weekly or monthly basis, switch out the playroom stash for a re-newed sense of playtime.

LABEL, LABEL, LABEL

With so many different types of things to keep track of, it’s easy to become confused about what goes where. For the things that are keeping their permanent space in the playroom, designate containers and label them accordingly. For those with pre-readers in the home, not only include the word, but the picture of the item too. This serves a dual purpose of word recognition and getting toys back to the right spot. TAME THE LOOSE PIECES

Things like board games and puzzles can easily get their pieces separated. Once just a few pieces are lost, the whole thing can no longer be used, so it’s important to keep these together. For puzzles, try framing the box cover and storing the puzzle pieces on the back of the frame. This serves as both decor and a practical way to keep it all together and up off the floor. For games, take them out of the box and store them in identical, easily stackable containers. Keep puzzles and board games out of reach, so you can keep track of what is being used. Be sure to establish the “one at a time” rule.

HIDE IT AWAY

Curtains can be used to cover and uncover the monstrosity of a toy shelf that sits in the room. Containers under a bed can be slid in after use. A bench with cube storage can be great as a reading nook, and even double as a bookshelf. A small ottoman that your child can sit on, that also has room for dress up clothes or other toys, will help contain the mess that no one will know is there. Don’t get discouraged if it takes a while for your children to understand the new system. They will get the hang of it. On the other hand, if the mess stays messy, take a deep breath, and enjoy your little ones because as we all know, “they grow up so fast!”

MAINTAINING A STRESS-FREE BEDROOM Out of all of the rooms in the house, your bedroom should be the most personal. It should be your getaway from the chaos, and your sanctuary after a long day. Many folks find the opposite to be true of their bedroom. THE NOSE KNOWS Although the science behind smells can be very in-depth, the short of the matter is that smells are directly linked to our emotions. The cells for our nose carry the signals of smell to our brain’s limbic system, and directly to the amygdala, which is involved in emotional learning and memory. This means, if there are any smells that you have a positive association with, such as the popular choices of lemon, lavender, or orange, then bring those scents into your room. One option is a diffuser with essential oils. Keep smelly dirty laundry at a minimum.

ELECTRONIC FREE ZONE The age of easy access electronics is well in motion. Amidst the buzz of everyday life, your bedroom should be the one place that no phones, laptops, or screens of any kind reside. Besides being plain old distracting, electronics emit a blue light that literally suppresses the release of melatonin, the neurotransmitter that regulates our sleep wake cycle. We are so often immersed in electronics that we forget the sweet sound of silence and our own thoughts. Make your bedroom the place where you can journal, read, or even stretch.

LIGHTING If you have any harsh lighting in your room, such as a fluorescent light, it has to go. Curtains are great for helping control your lighting options. The darker the room for sleep, the better.

MAKE IT UBER PERSONAL Put up those mushy pictures of you and your significant other that no one else wants to see. If you have any inspirational quotes that get you motivated, put them up in your bedroom where you will see them first thing in the morning. Sweet sentimental items could be displayed on shelving and in shadow boxes. Whatever reminds you of your favorite memories should have a place in your bedroom sanctuary.

ORGANIZATION IS IMPORTANT If your bedroom looks more like a war zone than an oasis, then start purging! Clothes should be put away promptly, the bed should be made daily, and anything that can go into a different room of the home should be taken out. N O M M O C R O DIY TIPS F PROBLEMS PLUMBING Whether you’re a new homeowner or have been handy with a wrench, snake and other tools for years, there are some situations that require more than a plumbing amateur’s skills. From the kitchen sink to the toilet and pipes underneath your home, these problems can occur at any time. As a homeowner, you should know how to handle them and when to call a professional.

CLOGGED DRAINS OR TOILETS When the water that’s sitting in a bathtub, toilet or sink won’t go down the drain, you have a problem. Start the repair process by first determining what caused the problem. Is it a clump of hair or a grease build-up? Something worse, perhaps? Whatever the case, finding out about the problem first is essential to finding a solution. Most toilet clogs can be handled with your trusty plunger. The clog in your drain will likely go away if you use a commercial grade drain cleaner. In this case, be sure to wear gloves and a protective mask at all times. If the clog persists after a few times, it might be time to call the professionals. You don’t want to overdo it with the drain cleaner because you might end up hurting yourself and damaging the pipes. Professional plumbers have tools that can help identify the problem much easier, such as snakes and video cameras. They’ll be able to use one of their many declogging tools to remove your clog in no time.


LEAKY FIXTURES A leaky fixture, such as a faucet, can be extremely annoying. Luckily, you only need a few tools and some basic knowledge to fix this type of problem. First, remove the handle by removing the screw that attaches it to the faucet. Then, try tightening the packing nut which is located at the base of the stem. After you’ve tightened this nut, place the handle back onto the faucet and test to see if the leak is gone. If this simple process doesn’t work, you may need to replace some necessary parts, such as washers or nuts, or it may be time to get a new faucet altogether.

BURST PIPE Regardless of the reason, a burst pipe can cause thousands of dollars in damage if not rectified in an appropriate amount of time. The best way to fix a burst pipe is with a C clamp. The first step is to turn off the water completely. Then, place a piece of rubber over the exposed area of the pipe. Secure the rubber by placing a piece of wood on top and then tightening down both pieces with a C clamp. Make sure you tighten the C clamp until both the piece of wood and rubber are secure. In most cases, burst pipes can only be fixed temporarily by homeowners. Once you’ve turned off the water and secured the pipe, call a professional; they might have to replace the pipe altogether.

NO HOT WATER Lack of hot water is an issue that millions of people across the United States experience on a daily basis. If you have an electric water heater, some of the causes may be a tripped circuit breaker, a bad thermostat or a faulty electric heating element. Once you’ve finished the troubleshooting process, the best thing to do is to replace any parts that you find are broken. Check out these tips and tricks for cultivating a thriving and productive garden of any variety.

BE SMART WITH SOIL. Whether it’s a flower or vegetable garden bed or containers, the secret’s in the soil, where roots develop and sustain life. Invest in the proper tools to keep this foundation strong and improve water and nutrient retention, keeping vital elements in the root zone longer.

PLANT CLOSE TO HOME. If you have room, try to grow your plants as close to the home as possible. This makes watering less of a task, and also makes it easier to get to your precious vegetables when it’s time to harvest.

OPT FOR A PERMANENT SOLUTION. There’s no doubt that gardens require seasonal upkeep, but you can find some ways to ease the tasks. The result is better drainage when it’s wet, better water-holding capacity when it’s dry, deeper root growth and healthier plants.

LABEL AWAY. Know exactly where you planted each seed with cute, natural labels. Simply use a permanent marker to mark each plant name on stones in front of each plant row.

BE A GREEN GARDENER. Always opt for eco-friendly, pesticide-free products to use in your garden, when possible. Products filled with chemicals can be harmful to animals when carried through the air with wind. So, dust off that shovel, tighten up the hose and get to growing.
