LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Fall 2018
Fall means warm days and crisp cool nights. The kids are back in school, we’re back from the beach, and the colors of autumn are peaking through the trees. We’ve enjoyed spending time with you while on the road this summer and hope to catch those of you we weren’t able to see during the many fall events. We believe this issue will motivate you to get outside and enjoy our region before you have to say your goodbyes to your ride for winter. We’ll catch you on the flip side of the riding season- Fall! Please share your journey with us via Facebook, tag us in your pit stops on Instagram, or tweet us your adventures with Twitter. We’d love to be part of your story.
"As always, keep the wheels down and chrome up!"

What can your office do to increase roadway safety for riders? John Hurley | Democrat
Position Running: Indiana State Representative, District 75
Roadway projects must take into consideration the needs of motorcyclists. Hazards to riders must be minimized to promote a safe ride environment. A culture of awareness of motorcyclists must be promoted by lawmakers.
Jeffrey S Locke | Democrat
Position Running: Indiana State Representative, District 56
I would be more interested in hearing your members concerns on what needs to be done and I'm willing to work with you on those concerns. As a retired police officer, I am very aware of the dangers riders encounter daily from my years of patrolling the streets.
Tia Justice | Democrat
Position Running: Cass County Council, District 2
Provide the funds necessary to improve infrastructure such as repaving roadways and updating lighting, traffic signals etc.
Tom Hedde | Democrat
Position Running: Indiana State Representative District 38
Back when I was a boy on the farm I loved to ride my motorcycle. As State officials we can maintain a sound infrastructure to make riding safer. I looked up some facts; helmets are estimated to be 37% in preventing fatal injuries for operators and 41% for passengers. Some of these are already on the books. Wear a certified helmet. New riders take a motorcycle safety course. Media campaign to help spread awareness about motorcycles and motorcycle safety.
Daniel E. Dernulc | Republican Position Running: Lake County Council, District 4
I use to have a Harley Fat Boy. I enjoyed riding, and would love to possibly start again. As a County Councilman, I have always supported road improvements. When I rode, I saw the need for road improvements on our county and state roads. I will keep supporting the need for more road improvements and work with our state representative to try to get more money for our local and county roads.

My First Bike… Fall 2018
Jimmy was 4-years-old and on a family vacation when he first fell in love with motorcycles. His Father’s friends had a young son with a mini bike. Jimmy learned to ride it while visiting. When his family left, Jimmy’s Dad bought the bike and brought it home! It was a 1960 yellow, tube frame caterpillar brand, 3hp Briggs engine, centrifugal clutch with front & rear disc brakes! At 9 years old, Jimmy bought and paid for a Honda ST90, which was his first 3-speed, spoke wheel, real motorcycle. Jimmy earned the money to pay for it by collecting cans while helping his Father maintain the grounds at Beech Bend Park. Jimmy worked as a Service Manager for a Honda, Polaris, Suzuki, KTM dealer for a few years, and in 1999 he bought his first Harley Davidson- a 1998 RoadGlide 95th anniversary model. His wife, Janie tagged the bike “The Big Brown Turd.” They put 68k miles on the bike before selling it. Janie is also a licensed rider. Jimmy and Janie founded Bluegrass Biker News in 1999 from their love of motorcycles and have promoted lots of motorcycle events. Jimmy’s enthusiasm for motorcycles has even allowed him to travel and be a part of the AMA Flat Track racing program as an announcer. It opened the door for him to work for a HarleyDavidson dealer as a marketing/promotions Manager. To Jimmy, motorcycles are the reason he has many of the best, closest friends. Motorcycles have become a part of the fabric of his life. Jimmy’s motto: “There is Nothing Like the Wind in your Face and Friends By your side on two wheels!”

Safety is Stylish! 5 WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF
1. Your noggin’ Helmets come in all sizes, so make sure it fits your head shape and size. Make sure you get a helmet that isn’t too loose or too tight and feel comfortable. 2. Bling-Bling Say no to dangling jewelry while riding. Anything that dangles may get tugged off by the wind or ripped out when removing your helmet. If you want to accessorize, pack your jewels in your bag or storage compartments while on the road. Dazzle at your destination. 3. Hoofin’ It Slides, sandals, and flip-flops will not protect your feet. Look for shoes or boots that have rigged soles for traction, won’t slip off midway, and are made of quality materials. 4. Duds Skirts and shorts won’t protect your stems, so opt for pants. Choose a fabric that is durable enough to protect your skin from bugs, debris, or –Heaven forbid- the pavement. 5. Showoff You may be a beacon of sex appeal for your significant other, but other motorist may fail to notice you. Wear bright fabrics and eye-catching designs. If you’re a night owl, incorporate reflective materials. STAND OUT IN THE CROWD! PAGE PAGE18 20

around the town with Rust prevention in your gas tank is a key maintenance step. If rust gets in the tank it could get into your fuel line and then your bike won’t run. It could also eventually cause the whole gas tank to need to be repaired or replaced. That can be time consuming and expensive.
Mechanic Mike
Here are a few basics of how to keep your tank from rusting. Condensation and water that enters your gas tank is the reason for rust. One of the best ways to prevent this is to keep your gas tank full. The ethanol in gas attracts water so keeping your tank full will leave less air space for condensation to form. I personally buy the higher octane fuel. However, it still has the same percent of alcohol as the lower octane. I also use additives with my gas to help prevent rust. The Blue Marine Stabil seems to work the best. I have experimented with Seafoam which also works OK. If you use any of these or other additives, please follow the directions. More is not better! You want to check that your gas cap is sealed tight. Make sure the caps o-ring or rubber seal is not cracked or dry-rotted. You would be surprised how water can find its’ way past an improperly sealed cap. One of the simplest ways to prevent rust is to keep your bike covered so water from rain and elements don’t get into the tank. Either keep your bike in a garage, under a carport or invest in a good bike cover. These steps should help keep your gas tank clean and your bike running! About Mechanic Mike: Mechanic Mike attended the American Motorcycle Institution in Daytona, Florida graduating in 1977. He has been a certified motorcycle mechanic for Harley Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Polaris, Suzuki and Yamaha for the last 39 years. PAGE 28 PAGE 22
