SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT
Hitching Post Inn is located in “Frogtown Louisville.” The building is closely approaching 100 years old and has a unique history. It’s a history that has led it to become a favorite destination for motorcycles Hitching Post Inn was built in the 1920’s.The building has been used as a general store, town meeting hall and a beauty shop. In the early days, the beauty shop would collect rain water to wash hair. Sheriff Jim Greene purchased the building in 1971 and opened a family restaurant and bar. The Hitching Post Inn quickly became the local watering hole. Kevin and Kim took ownership of the restaurant in 2017. They immediately began making improvements to both the building and the night life. Hitching Post Inn is now host for live music, karaoke night, ladies night and an incredible bike night. There are many unique aspects Hitching Post Inn has to offer. You can enjoy a unique outdoor beer garden while visiting. The food is incredible. There’s not a bad item on the menu. A dollar wall covers one of the interior walls. There is also a local challenge called “The Bimini Ring Challenge.” It has become a favorite in the bar and everyone is encouraged to try their luck. There are many reasons to visit and many reasons to keep coming back. However, the simplest reason: Hitching Post Inn is “The friendliest neighborhood bar you will find in Louisville Kentucky!” PAGE 9

My First Bike‌ WINTER 2018
Andy Ruppel, owner of AJ Cycle & Trike Conversions in Jasper Indiana has been riding for years. It all started on a Kawasaki Coyote given to him by his older brother John in about 1971. Andy was only 6 then and John worked at a dealership in Vincennes. John rode a yellow Norton 750, and thought Andy needed a bike too. The little Kawasaki was repaired, assembled, cleaned up and brought home to make endless laps in the alley behind their house. The two stroke was blowing smoke in the alley while John was waking up neighbors with his Norton in the middle of the night. Their mom was proud of her boys for taking up motorcycles and a lifelong passion for motorcycles was born in each of them. Andy still enjoys riding various motorcycles and trikes with his wife Leslie. Andy loves to visit with friends and customers who share that same passion. Stop by and visit them at AJ Cycle & Trike Conversions in Jasper Indiana.

Rumblings From The Road
Meet Mike Blissett. He embodies what we consider a “Motorcycle Enthusiast”. Mike was first introduced to motorcycles by his buddies in Evansville. He said he “used to ride their bikes in the alleyways.” He bought his first bike when he was 14 years old. It was a 1948 AJS 500 which was probably a little big for a young, brand new rider. Mike has ridden his bikes all over the U.S. At 79 years old, he still rides to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota every year. It’s a 1,250 mile ride. He usually has about 3 other guys that ride with him. Occassionally, he’ll get a call from someone who knows he rides there every year and will ask “Can I ride with you this year”. So, some years he has more riders with him than his normal three. In all of his years riding, he’s only had one accident. It was in Sturgis about 2 years ago. He was riding a 1998 Harley. He has a spot he likes to camp at every year and it’s down some hills and surrounded by trees. Someone had roped off a half acre in the area on the way to his spot. He didn’t see the rope until it was right on his windshield. He layed his bike down and broke his ankle. It didn’t disrupt his trip though. He still camped out the three days, attended the rally and rode all the way back home. Then when he got home, he went to the doctor. That’s what we call a “tough motorcycle dude”! Mikes wife Karen also rides. She rides a Honda 500 Shadow currently. She has rode beside Mike on her own bike to Sturgis, Texas, Key West, Gatlinburg, Vermont and several other places.

Mike’s made sure to do his part in raising another generation of riders too. His son Kenny raced motorcycles in the early 70’s. Mike wrote to the California Racing Association and asked if Kenny could come race in the World Championships one year. He listed all the local races he’d competed in and won. The Association said he could participate but would have to ride in the expert division because of all the races he had won. They went, Kenny raced and won 1st place. At the time, Kenny was the only boy outside of the state of California to win. The Association invited him back for the next 4 years – and paid his way there! Kenny rode an 80 Yamaha and a 100 cc Hodaka Steen. Mike & Kenny did a lot of modifications to his bikes. He was faster than anyone else. Mike retired from Alcoa in 2001. When he retired, he owned 12 different bikes. Several of them were antiques. He’s owned several BMW’s, a 1972 Triumph, a 750 Norton Atlas, 2 BSA’s and a few Moto Guzzi’s. He said “it got to be such a chore making sure they all had air in the tires, changing the oil etc, that he started selling them off”. Today Mike owns 4 motorcycles. When we talked with him, he was on a Harley. He said he rides everyday (as long as the weather isn’t real bad) and of course he still makes his annual ride to Sturgis! A little interesting background on Mike…. Mike was born in Rothwell England. He came to the United States by way of the Queen Mary in 1946, after the war ended. His Mother had married an American soldier and they moved to Evansville, Indiana. In 1962 they moved to Hatfield, Indiana where he still lives today. PAGE 13 1.12.012.Rumblings.indd 3

around the town with Mechanic Mike
I’ve had several customers who have lost the key to their motorcycle or four wheeler. Most of them are panicked about the expense to replace it. When they call me, I explain that it’s fairly easy to replace and not very expensive. They are definitely relieved. Most ignition switches or locks have a code number on the back. I have also seen it stamped on the top. Here's a guideline to help you when you’ve lost a key. 1. Remove the ignition switch and take it to a locksmith. 2. The locksmith will want to see identification and a registration or title as proof of ownership. 3. The locksmith then cuts the key to the code on a chart. 4. If you are not capable of removing the ignition switch, a locksmith will come to you and remove it. This is going to cost more than removing it yourself. 5. Another option if you can’t remove it, is to take it to a mechanic who can remove it for you. Again, this is more expensive than removing it yourself. The process above is simple and will get you back on the road quickly. The good news is, it can be done at a fraction of the cost of having a dealer replace the switches and locks. Happy Riding!

LADIES N LEATHER Rider Courses
You’ve seen us discuss prior to the issue the importance of rider courses for beginning riders. Statistically, riders that have successfully completed a riding course are less likely to be involved in a deadly accident. In turn, this keeps their passengers safe. The movement of women riders is growing and we’d like to help the cause. If you’re interested in learning to ride we recommend taking a course. There are several options available for our region. Do your research and decide which would best fit you and your schedule. 1. ABATE offers new rider courses for as low as $99. Completing the course will allow you to receive your endorsement in Indiana. 2. Check with your area HD-Dealer for their Riding Academy. Locations across the country offer this course to assist with skill development. 3. Ride Safe Indiana is an initiative through in.gov that helps you learn and receive your endorsement at the same time. 4. Kentucky Governor's Commission provides rider education programs for beginners and experts. 5. Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers a basic riding course. During these courses you will practice and be tested on a variety of skills.

BIKER LAWS We’re all nervous when we see that a biker has went down. We’re quick to get on the phone and check on our buddies. Facebook groups are great for roll call. In Indiana the number of fatal motorcycle crashes has reached its highest total since 2012. The state of Kentucky has also seen a steady increase of fatal motorcycle accidents in previous years. The highest rate of motorcycle crashes per 10,000 residents happens to be in Marshall and McCracken County. This begs the question, what are the top reasons for these accidents? 1. Head on Collisions (56% of Motorcycle Deaths) 2. Cars Making Left Hand Turns (42% of all Motorcycle-Car Crashes) 3. Lane Splitting (Some sources show lane splitting reduces fatal crashes) 4. Motorcyclist Speeding & Alcohol Use (Can be combined with other reasons listed) 5. Collisions with Fixed Objects (25% of Motorcycle Deaths)
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those that passed on this year. Be safe out there. Keep the wheels down and chrome up.
