We’re beginning to gear up for the 2019 riding season. As always, we have plenty of events, and new places for you to travel. We continue to expand into different regions to connect a larger group of riders. Starting in May we will be on year 4! It's been a great ride! We couldn't do this without all of our partners and loyal readers. Whether this is your 12th Leather N Chrome issue or your first I’d like to thank you for taking us with you on all of your rides. My First Bike… Spring 2019
Verna loves spending time on two wheels. Her first bike was a Harley Davidson Cross Bones. Her story begins similar to most riders. She loved riding at a very young age. She grew up riding mini bikes with her brother. This festered into a passion. She knew from the moment she sat on the Harley Davidson Cross Bones that the bike would always be her favorite. Her passion really heated up when she met her boyfriend Brian Badger. Together they’ve rode countless of miles. They’ve also accrued 6 bikes, all Harleys. Verna admits her favorites are her beloved Cross Bones and their Deluxe. Verna doesn’t have a favorite destination, she just enjoys the freedom and backroads of Kentucky.

Mechanic Mike
You’re dependent on your battery. Ensure it is well taken care of and charged by following this advice. Most batteries these days are dry cell which means there is no water in them and no need to add water. A quick way to know if you have a dry or wet cell is to try the caps on top of the battery. If the caps unscrew or pull out, it’s a wet cell. To remove a battery from your motorcycle, disconnect the cables by always removing the negative cable first, then the positive. If you have a wet cell battery you will need to add distilled water to the upper line. Make sure you add the water before you put the battery on a charger. It’s good practice to clean the cables with a wire brush or sandpaper. If you have a lot of corrosion, mix a little water and baking soda to clean them. You’ll want to check the battery over to make sure there are no cracks or abnormal marks of rubbing. Be sure you check the top, bottom and sides. Always remember that acid from the battery is corrosive so you should wear thin rubber gloves when handling it. If any battery acid gets on the frame or another part of the bike, use baking soda to neutralize it and rinse with water. PAGE 28 PAGE 12 1.13.012.MechMike.indd 10

Put the battery on a charger at 2 amp or lower. Once the battery is fully charged, the voltage should show 12.5 volts on the meter. With the battery charged and everything cleaned, it’s time to reinstall it. Start by hooking up the positive cable first. A properly working charging system will read 13-14 volts with the bike running. If it’s 12 volts or under, the charging system isn’t working. If it’s 15, 16 or 17 volts, it’s overcharging. If you have either of these situations, the charging components will need to be checked. A certified mechanic will be able to diagnose the issue. However, if you have a service manual, then you can probably check this yourself. Jamie Bose Meet Jamie Bosecker. She is an 8th grader who lives in Rockport, Indiana and is leading the MSXC racing series in points! Jamie has only been racing a little over a year. Jamie inherited the racing bug from her Dad, Tim who used to race. Jamie was a spectator at first but then decided she wanted to begin racing. She raced for the first time at the EV Moto Complex in Lynnville, Indiana on a KLX140 and came in 4th place. She currently rides a CRF150 R on a wet track and a KX 100 when it’s dry. Jamie prefers the power of the KX100. She says she’s fastest while riding the KX100. Jamie races year round because she competes in three different series (SIGPS, MSXC and MWXC). Usually, there are between 400 and 500 riders at the races she attends. The farthest Jamie has travelled to race was to historic Loretta Lynn’s ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.

Although she is out of town racing every other weekend, Jamie still finds time to maintain Honor Roll status and play on the school basketball team. She rides in the girls class but has ran motocross with boys. Jamie enjoys being challenged while racing against the boys. She insists the competition pushes her to go faster. Jamie is a hands-on rider who works on her own bikes with her Dad’s help. She told us that her current goal is to win the points. She isn’t looking too far into the future but wants to race as long as she can.
Good luck Jamie. We’ll be rooting for you!

BIKER LAWS You see it on the big screen, the big bad biker walks in a bar and the local townspeople tremble in fear. Profiling and stereotyping men and women on motorcycles isn’t something new. However, profiling of motorcycle riders has caused the U.S Senate to take notice to insure the fair treatment of all bikers. Most riders and groups have great relationships with local law enforcement. However, AMA conducted a survey in which nearly half of all riders responded that they have been unfairly targeted by law enforcement at some point. The U.S Senate resolution dissuades various profiling tactics such as “Motorcycle Only checkpoints” as well as unwarranted extra attention. The stereotypical thought is someone on a cruiser is a dangerous 1%er and someone on a street bike is a hooligan. As we all know this is furthest from the truth. All riders work together to have a better community in which they live. Motorcycle riders are notorious for lending a helping hand to those in need. From charity rides, to toy drives, riders are always eager to provide help. The U.S Senate has taken a step in the right direction by ensuring our rights are not violated simply because we choose the curvy road on 2 wheels. Most bike nights and communities have an excellent relationship with local law enforcement. In fact, there are many law enforcement officials who enjoy riding. The resolution provided by the U.S Senate simply provides a strong suggestion to all branches of government on how they want riders to be respected and not targeted based on their style of transportation. Be safe out there. Keep the wheels down and chrome up.
