My First Bike… Summer 2019

I've had a passion for motorcycles since I was a young kid at the age of 9. I worked mowing yards to pay for my first bike, an RM 80. As a kid I just had the craving for getting on bigger bikes. My next bike was an RM 125. Then I moved on to an RM 390. I always had the dream of owning a Harley Davidson as a kid. I always thought a Harley was so cool. I was drawn to the roaring sound and vibration. In ‘96 I bought my first Harley, a 2002 Harley Davidson Sportster. I loved it. Riding that Harley with my knees in the breeze made me feel like a completely different person. From then on, I had the fever. I knew Harley is what I wanted to ride the rest of my life. I’ve lost count of the bikes I’ve owned. I wouldn’t trade my experiences on my Harley for anything. I’ve met so many great friends who I now consider family. I’ve met great friends at the bike nights, events and rallies. Riding has become a part of my life. As of now, I own two bikes. I’m proud of both my 2011 Street Glide and my 2003 Road King Screaming Eagle Anniversary Edition CVO--

Inspecting brake fluid is probably the most neglected item on a motorcycle.

Over time the brake fluid becomes dark and murky from age, heat and condensation. A yearly change of fluid can keep your brakes working properly. Once the fluid gets too bad, it can be expensive to repair sometimes having to rebuild the reservoir and caliber. You can check the reservoir by removing the cap, sometimes a couple of screws are holding the cap on. Before you take the reservoir cap off though, make sure you have plenty of rags on hand. It would be wise to cover any painted or chrome parts on the bike so brake fluid won’t come in contact with it. A lot of the brake fluids can eat the paint on a bike. To remove the brake fluid, you can use a small baster. (Don’t apply the brakes while changing the fluid or it could shoot up on the bike) Check the top of the reservoir cap for the recommended type of brake fluid. i.e. Dot 3, 4 or 5. Fill the reservoir halfway with the new fluid. Connect a hose to the bleeder valve so the old fluid gets flushed out completely. Loosen the bleeder valve, push the brake lever in and the old remaining fluid will run out of the hose. Continue bleeding the line until you begin to see the new fluid running out. (The bleeder valve is on the caliber which is on the fork that fits over the brake rotor.) Make sure the reservoir doesn’t run completely out of fluid, because then the brake line will get full of air and you have to start the process all over. Once all the old fluid is out, then fill the reservoir up with new fluid, replace the cap and you are ready to ride. About Mechanic Mike:

More and more women are leaving the passenger seat to ride on their own.This doesn’t mean passengers will go extinct. We love the fact that female riders are becoming such a major factor in the riding industry. However, there is plenty of value and experiences that come from the passenger seat. Here’s some tips to ensure you’re being a good passenger. 1. Don’t get on the bike until the rider is ready. A shift in weight before the rider is ready can drop the bike, and you. 2. When taking a curve, look over the riders inside shoulder. Doing so will provide a proper angle. 3. By staying alert you may be able to notice upcoming hazards. You often have a wider vision than the rider that can be beneﬁcial. 4. If you pay attention to the riders physical signals, like muscles tightening, you can often brace for a quick stop. 5. Communication is key. If you need to stop, make it aware. If you’re navigating provide plenty of distance for the rider to maneuver.

Everyone that’s ever fired up the grill has given themselves the self proclaimed title of “Grill Master.” Take your game to the next level and set yourself apart following these 5 rules. 1. Trim the Fat- External fat can cause flare ups. Keep your grilling environment consistent. 2. Grilling Vegetables- Don’t add oil to the vegetables until they’ve been grilled. Excess oil will drip and vaporize. Lightly add oil after they’re removed from the grill. 3. Use a Thermometer Probe- Take the guesswork out of it. You’ll lose the title of Grill Master if everyone leaves the BBQ sick. 4. Grill the Bun- While the grate is still hot throw those buns down and give them a crispy crunch. BIKER LAWS

Sometimes you read a law and think, “what happened that made them write this down as something you should or shouldn’t do?” These are some of those laws. 1. NO COSTUMES- Virginia §18.2-422 states that you can’t conceal your identity while riding a motorcycle. No dressing up as ghost rider next halloween. 2. NO WHEELIES- You can accidentally pop a wheelie. However, if you pop a wheelie on purpose you’re breaking Maine law 29-A §2062. It’s safer to have 2 wheels on the pavement anyway. 3. YOUR LIMIT- Not necessarily a bad law, West Virginia §20-15-5 essentially says you can’t be a terrible biker.You must stay within your skill level. Don’t try to be Mr. Showoff. 4. NO HANKY PANKY- An old city ordinance in London says it’s illegal to have sex on a PARKED motorcycle. Having sex while the motorcycle is in motion is probably a bad idea too. 5. BLINDFOLDED IN ALABAMA- It’s illegal to drive blindfolded in Alabama. Assuming this came on the books because some idiot tried it. Not smart. PAGE 29
