Summer 2016

The 2016 riding season is well underway. I’m excited and thrilled to start this new adventure with all of the bikers in our area. The Tri-State has long needed a publication to bring together all bikers from all walks of life and help each other make the connections we all share on our rides. I hope this publication does a few things for our parties. I hope bikers can use this as a tool of entertainment, advice and guidance throughout all of our articles, topics, write-ups and events. I hope all of our

businesses that support our love of motorcycles will be patronized. We really appreciate their generosity to further foster our community by helping each of us help each other. The summer of 2016 is going to be a great year and I can’t wait to see each of you at the many events held across our tristate. As always, keep the wheels down and chrome up.

My First Bike…

I

By Mac

It was a hot summers day, one week until the 4th of July. I had searched the internet for used motorcycles and saved just enough to buy a running, well-used motorcycle. Not knowing much about motorcycles, other than the fact I needed one, I had my checkbook ready if I found one that ran. It was a black 1984 Suzuki GS750. It ran, had a terrible matte black hand brushed paint job BUT I had to have it! I taught myself the ropes for 2 weeks before I ventured onto well-travelled roads. (I suggest a learners course for all new riders). It took one spin around town, a compliment and I was hooked. I rode every chance I got. I never really understood what motorcyclist would mean when they’d talk about the feeling and freedom they got from riding the open road. $775 and a 1984 Suzuki showed me what I’ve been missing out on my whole life. Ladies in Leather

OK, you’ve been riding back for years and now you want to saw on the throttle? We’ve got you covered! We’re going to look at a style and option most women prefer. A great choice for women is the Yamaha V Star. The V Star is available with different CCs (250, 650, 950) and slightly different composition. If you’re just learning to ride, the 250 may be suitable for you. The 250 possesses less power and has a lighter weight. You can always upgrade to a bigger bike when you’re comfortable. If you’re already confident in your ability, a 650 may be for you. Because of its ample size and power, most women never trade up. Both of these options offer a low seat and low center of gravity. This makes either size you choose very manageable. Each bike offers a great level of comfort! If you’re looking to get into riding, check both of these out at your nearest dealer!

get asked quite often “what kind of oil should I use”? Or “what kind of oil do you run”? If you study the properties in oils, it gets complex. Simply put, most oils are good oils. The first thing you should do is look in your owners manual and find what weight of oil your bike takes. Example: 10-40W, 5-30W etc. If you feel you must run the Honda oil, Yamalube etc, by all means…go for it. Just make sure that whatever oil you choose has the API, SN on the bottle. It will be on the back. My personal preference is Castrol Oil because it has a higher boiling point, more additives and it takes longer to break down. So, the next time your bike needs an oil change…. 1. Find out the weight of the oil your bike takes. 2. Make sure the oil is API service rated.

3. Compare the prices of oil. Till next time….
