DESIGNER-APPROVED WAYS TO ACCOMPLISH A MODERN BACKYARD BY KERRIE KELLY, ASID
Now that the stormy weather has begun to pass, we can look forward to styling our backyards with sunny fabrics, warm textures and our favorite accessories. To accomplish a modern backyard look this spring, try adding a new fence or updating your existing fencing, freshening up your outdoor furniture or adding to your landscape. Keep reading for our go-to ways to create a contemporarily styled outdoor space just in time for the sun.
1. CREATE EFFICIENCY Modern settings, both indoor and out, offer efficiency as well as high-impact and low-maintenance design. While a backyard space won’t serve as many purposes as the interior, it should still be functional. Modern backyards enhance the homeowner’s life, acting as a separate livable space focusing on entertaining, dining and relaxing. A contemporary backyard retreat uses metal, wood and other durable materials to mix style with function, so try a sleek privacy fence in a dark wood to keep your backyard feeling cozy without detracting from the modern feel. Add to your design with hardworking fabrics like Sunbrella that offer color and texture paired with low-maintenance design.
2. USE ELEMENTS FOUND backyards pull from their surroundings to create a look that is streamlined, stylish and IN NATURE Contemporary soothing. Most modern color palettes consist of white, black and gray, but an outdoor space requires more
dimension via pops of bold color like green and blue, and added texture with wood, stone and metal. Mix and match colors and textures in similar shades for a dynamic effect, or use a single color in varying tones for an edgier look. Structures like pergolas, fencing and fire pits allow homeowners to use elements found in nature in a more streamlined way—like a cedar fence paired with crushed granite gravel and concrete.
3. COOK AND DINE AL FRESCO Modern backyards make use of every square inch of space, including the areas meant for cooking, dining and entertaining. Outdoor kitchens have grown in popularity over the past few years, and they’ll continue to become more common as families choose to dine al fresco when the weather permits. For a contemporary outdoor dining scene, create a central location where you plan on cooking and dining. Whether under a pergola, beneath a series of stylish umbrellas or on the patio, a covered outdoor kitchen will always be a focal point of your backyard. Define the space and add a modern touch with an intricate metal fence in a unique design. Next, add in kitchen elements like grills, refrigerators, drink stations, fire pits and other amenities to make your guests feel comfortable. Lastly, set the dining table with accessories like durable fabrics and linens, outdoor lighting, dishes and serving accessories. Top off your modern backyard with playful accents, twinkling lights and outdoor speakers, and you’ll be celebrating the great outdoors in no time!

THINGS INTERIOR DESIGNERS WANT YOU TO KNOW BY DANIELLE HARLING
The job of an interior designer is one that's filled with misconceptions for those unfamiliar with the gig. And with those misconceptions, the expectations of would-be clients can become hazy. To help ease any confusion and false expectations once design time comes around, here are a handful of things interior designers want you to know.
HIRING AN INTERIOR DESIGNER ON A BUDGET IS POSSIBLE
INTERIOR DESIGNER VS. INTERIOR DECORATOR
COMMUNICATION IS STILL KEY
THEIR SOURCES ARE SOMETIMES SECRET
If the thought of hiring an interior designer to spruce up your home has you seeing dollar signs, and not in a good way, don't fret. Working with an interior designer, even if you're working with a strict budget, is still a possibility. A great way to work with an interior designer while on a budget is to hire them virtually. For design firms that offer online services, a set price can be provided and from there you'll be able to create a room profile and peruse designs from one or even multiple designers.
If you plan on sitting back and kicking your feet up while your interior designer puts in work revamping your home, think again. Your input is still vital when it concerns the design process and being proactive will likely render the best results. Don't hesitate in voicing your thoughts during the design process, as miscommunication can easily put a damper on the end result.
INTERIOR DESIGNERS ARE TECHIES TOO
Technology has taken over just about every aspect of our lives, so it's no surprise that a great deal of interior designers are hip to the latest gadgets. In today's modern age, designers are able to use everything from 3D design software to lighting that uses 3D computer technology to choose options that work best for your abode.
17P77_NPMG_CreativeLiving25_LG.indd 4
Far too many times, the labels of interior designer and interior decorator become falsely interchangeable. An interior decorator is purely focused on aesthetics (think colors, textures, etc.), while an interior designer delves a little deeper, focusing on the functionality of a space. In addition to selecting decorative items, an interior designer is at times in charge of less glamorous tasks, including selecting plumbing fixtures and sketching design plans.
Similar to a great investigative journalist, interior designers aren't always free to share their sources. There are a variety of reasons why they might hold back such information. For instance, an item they've sourced might be custom-made or only available to interior designers. Additionally, costs are another aspect interior designers might choose not to disclose.

HOW TO GLAM UP YOUR MASTER BEDROOM WITH ROSE GOLD
By Cat Queen
Search the web from design blogs to interior decorating sites, and you'll soon discover that metallics are back in a big way. While metals like gold, silver, brass, and copper have each had their moments in the sun over the decades, today's most haute designers are all about rose gold. No longer relegated to jewelry, it’s popping up in weddings, fashion, and (finally!) in the most stylish homes. Rose gold brings an understated elegance that is unmatched by any other metallic trending today. Where gold can easily come off as too gaudy and silver as too cold, rose gold is able to balance the sought-after shimmer and shine of precious metal with an undeniably delicate touch. Ideal for the master bedroom, rose gold offers a glint of romance in a sophisticated, un-frilly way. Read on to discover how you can add a bit of glam to your bedroom with today's most sought-after trend.

2/27/17 8:17 PM
THE IMPORTANCE OF PALETTE. Soft and sweet - Modern monotone rooms are easily updated and softened by the shine of this sweet metallic. Starting with a base of white, beige, ivory, or light gray, add small rose gold details in unexpected places. A very hot look right now is using pops of rose gold against soft pinks, pale blues, and muted grays. Airy, neutral hues play off the inherent sweetness of this pale, precious metal. Strong and striking - If you're more interested in a bold, eyecatching statement, start with a deep, dark color like navy blue, burgundy, or plum. Rose gold really shines when used as the lighter gradient in a rich color palette, but it can easily become a bit garish if used excessively. Stick to one darker color and use another soft hue, like a cooler shade of your main color, to ease the transition; this will help retain the understated elegance of rose gold against a more dramatic background.
IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS. Past trends in decorating with metals have seen over-bright, highly polished metallics stealing the show. But too much of even the most attractive thing can overwhelm the senses. The goal today is to incorporate hints of shimmer with a few larger focal pieces in varying materials. This will maintain the subtlety of your accents and the overall consistency of your design. A few small items – a clock, a framed mirror, or even a hammered rose gold trash basket – can easily tie an entire look together. Flashes of warm pink in drawer pulls, curtain rods, lamp bases, or other fixtures can add subtle charm without overdoing it. Too much shimmer and shine may not be your thing—that's okay! Pay homage to this gorgeous pale pink metal with rose gold inspired fabrics. A dusty rose accent chair or tufted ottoman can bring just as much glamour to your room as a gleaming headboard. Playing with texture is an easy way to give your design more depth. Satin or sequined pillows bring shine and excitement to a plain cotton bedspread, while chunky knits and linens soothe the senses.
MAKE A STATEMENT. Of course, while small details are essential, nothing brings a room together like a larger accent piece. Go all in on a dramatic chandelier, an antique headboard, or a vintage bar cart to make a shimmering statement! Since rose gold has such a sweet feel to it, it mixes well with other metals to create an interesting, unusual aesthetic. You can also take advantage of all the glimmer of your accents by using mirrored furniture. Reflective surfaces are a rare blend of modern and vintage looks that work well in any room, and have the added benefit of making your space appear more bright and open.
DIY NOW! If you are happy with your existing furniture, focus on creating interest in the details. A duvet cover, some new shams, and a few simple accents can go a long way to transform your space. Budget-conscious decorators will be thrilled to know that rose gold is available in a metallic spray paint. Your entire master bedroom can easily be updated in one weekend just by spray painting items you already have. Light fixtures, mirror frames, chair legs, and potted plants are all excellent candidates for a rose gold makeover! Check your local craft stores for fabrics in rose gold or with rose gold details. Throw pillows or simple curtains are great DIY projects for even novice sewers. Rose gold is truly the ideal choice for a modern master bedroom. It has all the sophisticated personality of other metallics with none of the baggage: it's romantic and soft without being frilly, and shiny and eye-catching without being gauche. Now is the time to glam up your master bedroom with gorgeous rose gold!

HIGH-IMPACT UPDATES FOR YOUR TRADITIONAL FAÇADE By Rebecca Bradshaw
Whether you're selling your house or just want to have the best looking property on the block, first impressions start with curb appeal. While trimmed hedges and immaculate lawns may go a long way towards creating a good impression, tired siding and dated architectural details are harder to hide. Make over your home’s traditional façade with these high-impact updates.
IT’S PAINTING TIME!
Painting can be one of the least expensive ways to make a big change to your home’s exterior. Wood, brick, and vinyl siding can be painted to give an older home a contemporary feel. But while you may be tempted to use your favorite shade of blue, or play it safe with a boring beige or standard white color palette, consider your home’s architectural style as well as the region you live in before deciding on what paint colors to use. Be guided by other homes in your area—popular choices like dark gray and black trim may be right for some neighborhoods but may not work well on a Cape Cod cottage or a desert adobe.
UPDATE SIDING
Although it can be an expensive investment, replacing the siding on your house can really up the wow factor of an otherwise ho-hum exterior. Replace old, worn out wood or traditional vinyl siding with stucco, or, for a contemporary look, mix and match siding materials such as stone or brick with horizontal wood shingles or the latest in sustainable vinyls. Depending on a home’s basic structure, pairing steel panels with concrete siding can turn a traditional façade to an ultramodern showstopper. If replacing siding on your home’s entire exterior is beyond your budget, consider only refreshing the panels on the front of the house, drawing attention to the entrance.
KICK IT UP A NOTCH
Along with paint and siding, one surefire way to spruce up an outdated façade is to add architectural elements such as pediments and decorative panels, or by creating an arched entryway. Adding or upgrading a front porch can be a good investment; update a covered porch with modern railings and pillars, or install a wide, deck inspired entrance to open up the front of a contemporary home. To avoid a muddled appearance, keep all the architectural enhancements within the same overall design style.
WINDOW & DOOR IMPROVEMENTS
Finally, don’t overlook details when updating your home’s exterior. Create a fresh, new look by replacing outdated front facing window trims and shudders, and give your garage doors a facelift with new hardware and paint. For small changes with big impact, paint your front door a bold color, add a modern new mailbox, and replace dated outdoor light fixtures. Add the finishing touches to your home’s makeover by re-paving walkways, adding a grouping of outdoor benches, or by installing an eye catching water feature.

HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH A HOUSE IN ITS BEST LIGHT
With an abundance of real estate listing websites and word of mouth advertising through social media, thousands of photos of houses are uploaded onto the internet on a daily basis. That’s a lot of competition for home sellers, so it’s crucial to know how to photograph a house in its best light to ensure that a listing doesn’t get overlooked.
START WITH THE CAMERA Although most smartphones come equipped with good cameras, you may find you can get better photographs with a regular digital model. Take a few interior and outdoor test shots with both camera types to see which produces the best quality photos. Work with camera settings to optimize light levels and other functions before starting to take pictures. MAKE USE OF NATURAL LIGHT You don’t want
pictures to come out dark and gloomy, so take photos during daylight hours when the weather is good. For interiors, pull back curtains, raise shades, and move any plants or furnishings out of the way that may block the light or cause large, distracting shadows. Exterior shots should also be taken during daylight hours and always with the sun to your back.
ANGLES ARE IMPORTANT Nothing could be worse
than making buyers feel like they have been deceived, so avoid taking wide angle shots that make rooms look larger than they actually are. Take photos from the doorway or a corner to show off the entire room, and kneel down if necessary to avoid getting the ceiling in the shot. Exterior photos can be taken straight on to show the house’s full façade, or from an angle to capture its depth.

TREAT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY SHOOT LIKE A HOME SHOWING Make
sure that rooms are clean, cleared of unnecessary clutter, or staged with minimal furnishings before you start to take pictures. Follow the same rules for lighting and angles when photographing an already vacant house, being particularly mindful of any marks on walls or floors. Since exterior shots are usually the first ones shown on websites, curb appeal counts almost more than ever in house photos. Don’t chance having a great listing passed over quickly because a messy yard or parked car detracted from an exterior photograph.
EXCEED AND EDIT There’s no better way to end up with the best home photographs possible than by giving yourself plenty to choose from. Take several photos of both the inside and outside of the home, and from several different angles. Finally, use an online photo editing program to select, crop, and improve graphics on photographs that capture the best of what a house has to offer. Sources: Houzz, HGTV, Readers Digest
