Exquisite

Window Treatments

by Rebecca Bradshaw

TO IMPRESS YOUR GUESTS

Just as an elegant picture frame can enhance a beautiful painting, exquisite window treat-

Use window treatments to draw attention to your home’s architectural details such as vaulted ceilings or large Palladian windows. Luxurious silk floor to ceiling drapes backed by simple sheers add drama and sophistication to tall windows—the longer the curtains the more elegant the design. Drapes can either stop just short of the floor for rooms with high traffic, or can puddle for a more opulent look. Even if your windows don’t extend to the ceiling, mount flowing panels high, drawing the eye up to emphasize a room’s height and create the illusion of more space. Use classic finials and tiebacks for understated elegance. Pleated drapes hung from decorative rods are a window treatment staple, and can be topped with angular or scalloped valances for either a sophisticated or casual look. Pinched pleats at the top of panels add a fashionable, contemporary touch, while tabbed tops work well in more casual spaces. Fabric and pattern choices can match or complement the color and style the room’s furnishings. Soft, subtlety patterned drapes in neutral colors will help create a calm oasis, while the use of unexpected patterns and bold tones will add energy and visual impact to a room. These drapery styles work well with the current trend in window treatment hardware, which emphasizes simplicity and the use of natural materials. For elegant window dressings in formal rooms, tassel trimmed drapes in brocades or other rich fabrics are layered over sheers, and can be topped with cornices or valences for an exquisite, custom made look. Ornately scrolled metal hardware, crowns, and holdbacks trimmed with spar-

kling crystals give added opulence to this look. The same elegance can be brought to bedrooms by creating layered window treatments in lighter fabrics such as voile or cotton. Use soft, romantic prints or bold colors and patterns to fit the room’s décor. Match curtains to wallpaper for added impact. Window dressings in bright colors, whimsical patterns, and fabric tiebacks can be the perfect finishing touch to a child’s room. If your home’s style is contemporary, dress your windows with grommet hung panels to create crisp folds and sleek lines. Lined raw silk and textured or metallic sheened fabrics in deep tones offer sophisticated drapery options, while bold prints and colors that starkly contrast with the rest of the space add dramatic visual impact. Simple polished nickel and chrome hardware will continue the contemporary look. With their soft folds and light blocking abilities, the function and simplicity of Roman shades have traditionally been used in more casual spaces such as family rooms and kitchens. With the current abundance of fabric choices and customized offerings, however, Roman shades are now adding both style and function to even the most formal room in the house. Heavy linens, geometric prints and wooden hardware are popular finishing design choices for the shades. No matter what your style, exquisite window treatments bring the perfect finishing touch to any room in your home. Source: HGTV, House Beautiful, My Home Ideas, Better Homes & Gardens

10 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR CONTRACTOR BEFORE THE PROJECT BEGINS BY SEAN HANSEN BEFORE JUMPING INTO A NEW HOME RENOVATION PROJECT, IT’S IMPORTANT TO BE ON THE EXACT SAME PAGE AS THE CONTRACTOR YOU JUST HIRED. SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT BY ASKING HIM OR HER THESE 10 QUESTIONS.

1. HOW DO YOU PREFER TO COMMUNICATE? A clear line of communication is crucial when working with anyone, especially when it comes to your house. With multiple modes of communication to choose from, you may think that your general contractor will check all of them religiously, but that may not be the case. You could be an email fanatic, while your contractor may be more reliable with phone communication. Check with them to see which form they prefer, and be sure to find out how to contact them during off business hours in case of emergencies. It’ll save you some headaches, and you’ll thank yourself later. 2. WHAT’S OUR TIMELINE? A schedule doesn’t just lay out the start and end date of a project, it should also outline the day-by-day work as well as deadline dates for the various tasks that make up your home project or remodel. Having a clear yet detailed view of the process will allow you to see whether your project is on schedule or falling behind. 3. WHAT PRECAUTIONS WILL YOU TAKE TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO MY HOME AND BELONGINGS? Make sure your contractor will take care to protect your various appliances and property. Ask them how they plan on protecting electronics and everyday appliances. Be sure to bring up suggestions and see if they have any better ways in mind. 4. WHO ARE YOUR SUBCONTRACTORS? WILL YOU BE HERE EVERYDAY OR WILL YOU BE USING A FOREMAN? Just because you’ve found a licensed and insured contractor with good references doesn’t mean everyone on their team may be up to your standards. Ask for a list of everyone who’ll be working on your house and how each unit will be supervised. Be sure to vet your sub-contractors with the same attention of detail you gave selecting your general contractor. If you have an issue with any of the sub contractors, be sure to voice your concerns to your general contractor. 5. HOW OFTEN WILL WE MEET AND WHAT TIME WILL I NEED TO BE AVAILABLE? In addition to keeping clear lines of communication with your contractor, you’ll also want to have dedicated time on-site to be set aside for your project. Your general contractor may have several jobs going on at once, and you’ll want oneon-one attention to deal with any issues they may have forgotten. These should be brought up in the course of your normal communications. Don’t assume they’ll be able to see you at the drop of a hat; choose a set time to meet

with them on a regular basis. There may also be specific dates when you will need to be present (i.e. selecting tile layout, marble patterns or facades). 6. ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC CONCERNS YOU HAVE WITH THIS PROJECT? There may be potential electrical or plumbing complications your project could encounter. Ask your general contractor to talk you through any concerns they may have and be sure to ask them to elaborate if you’re having trouble understanding any of the details. Forewarned is forearmed. 7. CAN YOU PROVIDE ME WITH DOCUMENTATION? You may imagine that after the work’s done, you’ll never touch your house again, but you should still ask for documentation. A list of work performed and a layout of the updated wiring, plumbing, or load-bearing systems will make your life easier and can save time if you ever do work on this part of your house again. 8. CAN YOU INFORM ME OF ANY CHANGES AND PROVIDE ME WITH A CHANGE ORDER? No plan survives its infancy, and you’ll need a way to keep track of any changes your project will encounter. Requiring documentation and authorization for a change order will allow you to track expenses and protect yourself in case of any overrun. Make sure you under-stand their process. As mentioned above, documentation is key. 9. DO YOU OFFER ANY APPLIANCE DISCOUNTS? If you’ve been thinking about replacing some home appliances (or your project is something like a bathroom or kitchen remodel), go ahead and ask your general contractor if they’ll of-fer any shopping discounts. They may be able to get a better price than you’d be able to get on your own. Even if they don’t, however, be sure to see if they’d be willing to pick up and install the appliances. 10. HOW LONG IS YOUR WARRANTY? HOW FLEXIBLE ARE YOU WITH IT? Since you’ve already picked your contractor, chances are the work is warrantied. Be sure to find out how flexible your contractor is with the warranty’s time limit. You don’t want to find yourself high and dry one day after the warranty’s up.

How to Bring Natural Beauty into Your Home with

DIY Terrariums by Rebecca Bradshaw

O

rganic, beautiful, and practical terrariums are the perfect way to bring an element of nature into your home. The miniature displays of glass and greenery add a vibrant, living accent to the décor of any room. Best of all, you don’t need to have a green thumb to create or care for these indoor gardens. Once a staple of the 1970’s, decorating with terrariums has seen a resurgence in popular-

and the turn towards green living. Traditionally, succulents and other small plants were used to make small landscapes that were housed in glass containers such as aquariums and snifters, but these days terrariums are limited only by the imagination of their do-it-yourself creators.

terrariums. For a more arid arrangement that requires little moisture, tiny barrel cacti and pale succulents work well together in open topped containers and low sided bowls. Water terrariums are also an easy to maintain option. Pothos,

Depending on the type of plants they house, terrariums can be shown in either low light or well-lit spaces, making them a versatile decorating tool. The general rule of thumb is to place ferns and tropical plants together, separate from cacti and succulents. Containers are layered with small pebbles for false drainage, plant appropriate potting soil, and activated charcoal to keep the terrarium free of fungus and bacteria. The top layer of the container can be decorative, using moss, small pebbles, or topped with sand and seashells to create a “beachy” display.

Diorama or “tiny world” terrariums are a popular decorating option these days. Plants, along stones, twigs and feathers are arranged in containers to create scenes that tell a story or capture a memory. From detailed to simple, do-ityourself diorama terrariums bring a unique and personal impact to any space they occupy. Whether you build your terrarium from all natural elements or add non-organic items, these tiny indoor gardens are sure to bring the beauty of nature into to any room in your home. WELCOMEHOME:

FIBERGLASS-COMPOSITE DOORS Don’t be fooled by its rich cherry wood finish. This resilient door is made of fiberglass.

3 ENTRY DOOR OPTIONS

Installing a new entry door is a great way to improve the curb appeal of your home and create a warm, welcoming first impression for visitors. And while entry doors should certainly be attractive and architecturally interesting, they must also be resilient, weathertight and able to withstand expo-sure to the elements all year round. If you’re interested in replacing your entryway door, you’ll first have to decide which type of door to purchase. Entry doors are readily available at home improvement centers in three different types: wood, steel and fiberglass. All three types come in a wide range of sizes, styles and prices, so you won’t have any problem finding a door to fit into your budget and existing doorway. The more difficult decision is choosing which door type best suits your home, personal taste and lifestyle. To make that decision a bit easier, below you’ll find detailed descriptions of each door type, including benefits, drawbacks and important features to consider.

more expensive than a wood veneer door, but they’re also stronger and more durable. Homeowners love wood doors because it’s hard to beat the natural beauty and warmth of real wood. Plus, they can be painted, stained or finished with a clear topcoat. However, wood requires a certain amount of maintenance to keep a fresh, like-new appearance. When exposed to the elements, wood can swell, shrink, crack and warp. Paint and clear topcoats will eventually blister and peel. That’s why wood doors are best suited for recessed doorway openings, where the door is protected from the weather by a large overhang or deep alcove. If you’re planning on painting your new wood door, order it with a factory-primed finish. That’ll save you the time and trouble of priming the door before painting. Also, it’s very important that you paint the entire door: top and bottom ends, left and right edges, and front and back surfaces. That’s the very best way to seal out moisture and deter warping. STEEL DOORS This steel entry door has a decorative glass panel and is available prefinished in six paint colors.

WOOD DOORS The natural beauty and warmth of wood is captured in this prefinished mahogany door.

Wood doors are commonly available in a variety softwood and hardwood species, including fir, pine, hemlock, mahogany, oak, cherry and walnut. Most wood doors feature frame-and-panel construction, and can be ordered with or without “lites,” or windows. Solid wood doors are constructed entirely out of solid pieces of wood. Veneered doors have a sol-id wood frame that’s covered with a wood veneer. Solid wood doors are often heavier and

Steel doors are popular with homebuilders and homeowners alike, and it’s easy to see why: They are extremely strong and secure. They’re durable and weather-tight, especially when fitted with magnetic weather stripping. Generally speaking, steel doors are also the most affordable type of entry door. Steel doors come primed ready for paint, but many home improvement centers now offer prefinished steel doors in a wide choice of factory-applied paint colors. And while most steel doors have a smooth surface, some models feature an embossed woodgrain finish. The two main drawbacks to steel are that it dents and rusts. You can fill dents with auto-body putty, but rust must be completely removed to prevent the corrosion from spreading. Scrape or sand away all the rust to expose bare steel. Then, apply a primer coat followed by two coats of paint.

There’s no such thing as a maintenance-free door, but a fiberglass door comes pretty darn close. Fiberglass is extremely tough and resilient, and particularly well suited for harsh, humid climates. It’s also highly resistant to warping, splitting and cracking. Fiberglass doors won’t dent or rot. Most fiberglass doors have a realistic wood grain texture that can be stained to resemble a wood-en door. In fact, if you like the rich look of a solid mahogany door but not the price tag, buy a fiber-glass door and apply a mahogany stain. If you’d rather paint your entry door, that’s fine, too: fiber-glass accepts paint beautifully. The main drawback to fiberglass doors is that they’re relatively expensive. Only highend solid-hardwood doors cost more. DOOR-BUYING TIP: SIZING MATTERS It’s easy to make mistakes when ordering new doors because of the somewhat confusing way that manufacturers specify door sizes. For example, a 36-inch door is sold as a 3-0 unit (pronounced three-oh), meaning that it’s 3 feet, 0 in. wide. A 2-8 door isn’t 28 in. wide; it’s 32 in. wide. If you’re not paying close attention, it’s easy to order a 3-0 door for a 30-inch-wide opening, and then discover that the door is six inches too wide. Avoid these costly, time-consuming mistakes by double-checking the dimensions before ordering the door. When shopping for entry doors, keep in mind that price is a good indicator of quality. A high-quality door will cost more, but it’ll last longer, perform better and be much more energy efficient. No matter which door you choose, make sure it suits your home’s climate. It’s also important to practice regular maintenance in order to keep your new door looking its best. As a home improvement expert, Joseph Truini provides great advice on all kinds of DIY projects. Creative Curb Appeal FOR A PERFECT FIRST IMPRESSION By Chris Hillman

Close your eyes and imagine walking up to your dream home. There’s color, cleanliness, and creativity. Making your home’s first impression match the vision of your dream home might be easier than you think. Whether you’re selling your house or are ready to put its best foot forward, check out these tips for increasing your home’s curb appeal.

Start at the bottom Your home’s driveway may seem like a strictly utilitarian feature, but it could be the very first thing visitors and potential buyers notice. You can spruce up your driveway in a weekend with crack sealer and blacktop refinishing topcoat. Talk to the pros at your local home improvement store for tips. It’s a messy job, but with care and preparation, it doesn’t need to be difficult. You will be astonished at how much elegance a refinished driveway can add to your curb appeal.

Splash in some color The last word you ever want to hear in a description of your home is “drab.” Adding vibrant color to your home doesn’t have to require all new exterior paint. You can make the same impact for less time and money with accents and creative landscaping. A boldly painted front door draws the eye, and can be a distinguishing feature to bedraggled home shoppers who are having difficulty comparing one house to the next. Another unique way to add color without digging up your whole yard is to surround your front walk and porch with potted flowers. You’ll get all the benefits of floral landscaping without the hard work and grass-stained knees.

Light me up One slightly more involved, but undeniably impressive curb appeal project, is done through outdoor lighting. When it comes to adding dynamic visual drama to your home, nothing surpasses outdoor and landscape lighting. Thankfully for your wallet, a little outdoor lighting goes a long way. A gently lit front walk and a single spotlighted tree can add cinematic appeal to an otherwise dark exterior. Solar lamps are a cost effective and an energy-friendly alternative to traditional landscape lighting

Check the mail Like a driveway, your mailbox is easy to overlook as a purely functional element of your home’s exterior. On the contrary, a mailbox is like a blank canvas just waiting for a chance to express itself. Get rid of that cheap aluminum box bolted to a 4x4 and choose to make a more artful statement. The possibilities for a mail-box upgrade are endless, but keep it understated. For instance, an arched brick or stacked stone mailbox adds craftsmanship to your curb appeal.

Patronize the arts To some, the phrase “yard art” conjures lawn gnomes, plastic flamingos, or worse. That’s why I prefer the term “exterior sculpture”. When your home has curb appeal, yet you feel it is missing a certain panache, consider a sculpture with high visual impact. Sculptures can help ease the transition from exterior to interior, and have the ability to frame the view of your home in a unique way. More importantly, sculpture is a chance for you to make a statement that no brick walkway or boxwood hedge can. Visit galleries, art shows, or craft fairs to narrow your taste, then find a local artist whose work speaks to you. Abstract sculpture tends to work well outdoors, but hey— the sky (well, in this case, the ground) is the limit. Source: Bobvila.com
