GET GREENER PLUMBING, TODAY

Y

ou may be greening up your cleaning products or your eating habits, but have you stopped to consider your plumbing? While there are so many ways to go green with your home, plumbing might present the most opportunity of all. In the long run, green plumbing will end up lowering utility costs and also make both your home and the environment a healthier place. Plumbing covers a range of categories inside your home. From the drainage system to pipes and water heaters, to toilets and the sewer main. As you can see, there are a lot of options when it comes to going green with plumbing. Read the following green plumbing tips from Petri Plumbing & Heating, Inc. INSULATE WATER PIPES: According to GreenBuilding.com, heating water for homes accounts for as much as 30 percent of residential energy consumption. By insulating the pipes and using high-grade pipe insulation, it can lower the energy expenditure needed to heat your water. INSTALL WATER SAVING FEATURES: In older homes, plumbing features such as faucets, showerheads and toilets are as historic as the homes themselves. By replacing these dated units with modern, energy-efficient counterparts, you can reduce leaks, conserve water and reduce your energy bill.

Newer and more efficient toilets can cut down the amount of water used by as much as 80 percent. A low-flow toilet only uses 1.28 gallons of water per flush, whereas a full-flow toilet uses 3.5 gallons per flush. A dual-flush toilet uses only 1.6 gallons for solid waste and only 0.8 gallons for liquid waste. A newer toilet can translate to a potential savings of 10,000 gallons of water each year.

Install a tankless water heater, which uses much less energy than a standard water heater. Instead of wasting energy keeping a huge reservoir of hot water at all times, a tankless water heater heats the water only as it is needed.

Replacing a traditional shower head with a low-flow showerhead will reduce the traditional water usage by around 50-70 percent. The homeowner can also install an even greener shower product, the steam shower. While traditional showers use 25 gallons of water per shower, a steam shower uses around 1 gallon of water per shower.

Inspect your home plumbing for leaks: Detecting leaks can be a difficult task, and in some cases, small leaks can be unnoticeable to an untrained homeowner. Hire a professional to help you hunt down hard to spot leaks.

Gardening for Your Small Deck or Patio By Barbara Pronin

Having limited outdoor space is no reason to curb your love of gardening or to settle for less than a thriving green space. From tasty fruits and veggies to flowering plants, trees and shrubs, container gardening is a great way to enhance your small deck or patio, say gardening editors at HGTV.

and get a season's worth of sweet, ripe berries.

The good news is that container gardening isn’t that hard to implement. Most plants aren’t picky when it comes to what type of pot they grow in. As long as they have enough space to spread their roots and drainage holes for excess water, this method can be extremely fun and satisfying. Pots come in a variety of materials, but one particular type will work just as well as the next.

Potted Roses

Test your green thumb with these:

Dwarf Citrus Trees If your space provides a little sunlight, dwarf lemon or lime trees will typically do well when planted in terracotta pots.

Strawberries Try planting them in a hanging basket that gets lots of sunlight

Red, Ripe Tomatoes You can grow smaller varieties in pots. Start with young plants or establish seed plantings indoors first, then transfer them in pots to a sunny spot on your deck or patio.

Low-Care Succulents Because they store water in their fleshy leaves and stems, these evergreen plants do well even when you don't water regularly. They need a little sun, though, so group pots of succulents in a light, bright corner.

Flowering Vines

If the area gets at least five hours of daily sun, planter pots of dwarf or mini-sized roses will produce colorful blooms all summer long. Prune them out of season as you would prune their larger cousins.

Compact climbers, like jasmine and clematis, are great container plants. All they need to thrive is a pot with good drainage, a trellis or post for support, and regular watering and feeding.

Bonus Tip:

Mini Herb Garden Group varying sizes of containers together and get ready to season your dishes with mint, chives, and other herbs grown in a limited space.

Sunflowers There is nothing as cheerful as these summer favorites. Choose colorful pots, or let the kids paint tin cans with enamel paint, then plant dwarf sunflower seeds in each.

For an engaging change from store-bought pots, plant your favorites in colorful vintage tins scooped up at thrift stores or garage sales.

MYTHS ABOUT CREDIT,

Busted

One of the most important aspects of applying for a mortgage is credit, for both the borrower to assess and the lender to evaluate. A borrower's credit history and score can be a pivotal factor in a lender's decision to approve or deny a mortgage. Knowing how credit is determined, and how to improve it if needed, is crucial to ensuring a successful outcome. While most Americans seem to have a handle on the basics of how credit scores are calculated, others are downright confusing. Essentially, the way that creditors look at a borrower’s profile depends on a variety of different factors. Unfortunately, there is a lot of confusion on what is considered good and bad from a borrower’s standpoint. For example, while a missed payment is a sure sign that you might not pay back your loan on time, other subtle factors like diversity in your credit profile can give insight to lenders into your credit history. Below are six common credit myths, recently revealed in a survey by TransUnion, one of the three major credit reporting agencies. 1. My score will go down if I check it. Forty-three percent of those surveyed believe the misconception that checking their credit score will lower it. A "hard inquiry," or one that comes from a lender, could—but a "soft inquiry," or one made by a borrower, will not, according to the agency. 2. My score will go down if I close an account. Thirty-five percent of those surveyed believe closing a credit card account will lower their credit score. Closing an account can lower a score, especially if it is longstanding, according to the agency—but if the card history is short or the limit is low, closing it could be harmless to a score. It is important to note, however, that cards close to bumping up against their limits can do damage to your credit score. Even though your score can take an initial hit by closing an account that’s close to the limit, it will improve if it helps you to better manage other existing accounts.

payments are factored into their credit score—a partial truth, according to the agency. Some utility companies share all payment information with credit reporting agencies, while others share only late payment information. 4. My large balance is fine if I pay it on time. Paying all of your credit card bills on time is absolutely critical since payment history holds the most weight among most credit scoring models. However, 51 percent of consumers believe that carrying a high balance is good for credit health. Unfortunately, this isn’t true. High balances paint a picture that says you don’t know how to utilize your credit rate. How much debt you are carrying versus your collective credit and balances on individual cards is the second most important factor for calculating credit score. It’s best to keep your balances below 30 percent of your available limit. Even better, pay off all of your purchases in full by the end of the month. 5. My score will only improve if I have a balance. Most people believe that credit card debt is just a normal part of life. Thirty-seven percent of consumers believe that it’s crucial to maintain a balance on your card in order to improve your score. This isn’t true. The act of simply having a credit card will benefit both your credit history and your credit utilization rate, especially if you keep your balance low. With that being said, using your card in a responsible way will do the most for improving your credit score into the future. 6. My short history of credit can’t hurt me. Holding off on opening credit accounts will probably end up hurting you in the long run. Fifteen percent of your FICO score is based on the length of your credit history, or essentially the amount of time you’ve been taking out loans. Not opening lines of credit signifies that you’re uncomfortable with the process, and aren’t responsible enough to be able to manage it to your advantage. If you want to start small to ensure that you can successfully manage credit, ask a parent or guardian to add you as an authorized user to their existing credit card account.

3. My utility bills impact my score. Fifty-one percent of those surveyed believe utility Source: TransUnion, Reprinted with permission

Break Bad Laundry Habits T

he results are in: most of us practice poor laundry habits. According to a nationwide survey commissioned by LG Electronics USA, nearly all respondents admitted to mixing items that should be washed separately just to avoid doing another load of laundry. Whether it's hectic work and school schedules, the demands of family life, social activities or plain old exhaustion, the reasons for taking short cuts in the laundry room are many and valid. Unfortunately, you and your clothes pay the price. Out of those surveyed, 31 percent said they had to leave clothes out of the wash because everything just wouldn't fit. Other findings include: »

More than one out of four Americans do not know how to properly maintain their washing machines.

»

The majority (60 percent) of Americans have resorted to running their washer for six items of clothing or fewer at least once per month, with almost half running at least four lighter loads a week.

»

Four out of five Americans believe washers, in general, can be improved, and many Americans do not trust their washing machine with their most prized clothing possessions.

If you recognize yourself in any of these statistics, here are some tips from lifehacker.com for making the most of your laundry efforts, saving you time and energy—and preserving your clothes—in the process: 1. Do laundry less often. Don’t fall into the habit of wearing something once, then tossing it in the hamper. Unless you’ve spilled something on it, you should be able to get at least a couple of wears out of a top, and several wears out of a pair of jeans.

2. If you do get a stain, treat it right away. Letting it sit indefinitely before washing reduces the odds of that stain ever coming out. Scrub it right away with a store-bought stain solution, or use items you probably have in your pantry, such as lemon juice, club soda or hydrogen peroxide. 3. Read your clothing labels. Nothing shortens the lifespan of a favorite fashion item like washing it incorrectly. Read labels to determine the right water temperature, how long and at what temperature it should go in the dryer, or whether you should avoid the washer/dryer altogether and opt for dry cleaning. 4. Clean the machine. Cleaning your washing machine every few months is essential. Simply toss in a washing machine cleaning tablet, or run a cup of white vinegar through the system. This will keep your machine functioning and smelling its best. 5. Hang and fold clothes pronto. If your clean laundry is just going to end up in a jumbled pile, what’s the point? Spend a few minutes hanging and folding your laundry as soon as it comes out of the dryer.

6 Ways to Keep Your Appliances & HVAC Running Strong By Chip Smith, Sears Home Services

A

fter a long summer season of your home appliances putting in overtime, it’s now time to make sure that everything is still working as it’s supposed to. Extreme heat, summer storms and power outages could have caused damage to appliances, in increased usage from the heat and humidity. All these factors can spell trouble, but only if you're not performing routine maintenance.

2. Clean and inspect your refrigerator's door gaskets. A leaky door gasket, the rubber strip that runs alongside the door to form an airtight seal with the fridge, can result in your refrigerator trying to cool the entire kitchen rather than the food and drinks inside.

Here are six expert tips to keep your appliances and home running strong into the fall season.

3. Change the air filters in your HVAC system. Homeowners should regularly change their air filters, as dirty ones can lead to increased energy bills and damage systems. Experts recommend changing air filters every three months at minimum.

1. Clean your refrigerator's condenser coils. Condenser coils help the refrigerator stay cool by releasing heat from the compressor. Dirty coils result in the refrigerator having to work harder to cool, which can result in expensive cooling system repairs. Clean the condenser coils at least twice a year, removing dirt, pet hair, food and more. If you have an older fridge, the coils might be painted black and mounted on the back. Newer refrigerators often have the condenser coils on the bottom.

Clean the gasket with a mild cleaner and then check the seal integrity with a solution of soapy water.

4. Clear away debris and clean HVAC condenser coils. Condenser coils release the heat from the AC unit to the outside. Dirty coils can reduce the unit's ability to cool your home, forcing you to run it longer and use more energy during the summer. Now is the time to clean those coils. First, clear away debris and trim any overgrown grass or weeds near the AC unit. There is no rea-

son to remove covers or fins from the air conditioner to clean the coils. Simply take a garden hose with a spray nozzle and wash the fins, (the outside of the AC unit) with regular water. Start with the top and work downward, washing away debris and blockage so the coils can release heat efficiently. 5. Clean the dryer lint trap and moisture sensors. Our expert technicians recommend you clean the dryer lint trap after every single load to ensure your machine is drying clothes as quickly as possible, which will save you time and energy. Periodically, use a dryer lint brush to dislodge and remove any lint that the screen didn’t catch and clean up with a vacuum. Every six months or so, remove and wash the lint screen to remove build up, especially if you use dryer sheets. If the automatic cycle isn't fully drying your clothes, you should clean the moisture sensors with soap and water to remove the chemical residue left behind from dryer sheets. This residue can build up and trick the sensors into thinking your clothes are dry prematurely.

6. Clean and inspect your gas grill. With outdoor entertaining season lasting well through Labor Day, now is a great time to make sure your gas grill is still working the way it should. Make sure the gas is off, check the manual for how to remove the burners, then brush out the grill's interior and burner ports with a wire brush designed for grills. Use cooking spray on the burners to prevent rust and tarnish and to keep food from sticking. Before using your grill, you should also check for a tight seal and for leaks and cracks in the hose going to the propane tank or natural gas supply line. Use soapy water to detect leaks. If bubbles start to form, there's a leak. If there's a leak, replace it, as this can be a fire hazard. Chip Smith is the chief marketing officer of Sears Home Services, a national provider of appliance services. Sears Home Services, the House Expert for Homeowners, has more than 5,000 expert technicians who make nearly 7 million service calls annually.

Traveling? Safety Tips for Home & Family BY BARBARA PRO NIN Whether it’s an impromptu road trip or a European vacation, travel is fun and exciting. But with cyber-crime on the rise and an empty home a target for thieves, traveling families should take extra precautions to keep themselves and their homes safe while away. If you want to feel safe while you’re away, it’s probably smart to do several things before you turn the key in your lock. USA Today offers 10 safety tips worth reviewing. STOP MAIL & NEWSPAPERS – There’s no bigger tipoff of an unoccupied home than newspapers piling up on the porch or mail overflowing the mailbox. REMOVE THE SPARE KEY – If you hide a spare key, remove it from its hiding place. Too many thieves know just where to look. ASK FOR ASSISTANCE – Bribe someone with homebaked cookies if you must, but ask someone you trust to drive by every day or two to check that all seems normal – perhaps even water your plants or bring in any advertising flyers left on the doorknob or in the driveway. DON’T ANNOUNCE YOUR TRIP ON SOCIAL MEDIA – You may want your friends and family to know that you’re embarking on a trip, but you have no idea how many people you don’t know will be reading those messages as well. PURCHASE A LIGHT SWITCH TIMER – Program it to turn a few lights on and off automatically throughout each 24-hour period.

CHECK THE CURTAINS – If you normally leave them open during the day, don’t close them. Drapes and curtains uncharacteristically closed for days or weeks can be another tip-off to thieves. LEAVE AN ITINERARY – Provide someone with your mobile number and itinerary, including hotels, so you can be reached if necessary. Check in with this person every few days, especially if your itinerary changes. SCAN YOUR PASSPORT – If traveling out of the country, scan a copy of your passport, email it to yourself and take a photo of it to save on your cell phone. You’ll have it if the original is lost or stolen, and getting a replacement will be easier. PACK/REPLENISH YOUR EMERGENCY CAR KIT – If on the road, include a first-aid kit, blankets, some non-perishable food, a flashlight, and bottled water. DON’T FLASH CASH - Keep your cash separated, with some spending money accessible but the rest hidden, so you don’t expose a wad of cash every time you pay.
