Marshfield 101: A brief lesson on our long history
T
he City of Marshfield is the county seat of Webster County, Missouri. Both names denoted and pay tribute to the prominent 19th Century Politician Daniel Webster and his lineage to Marshfield, Massachusetts. The early settlers first arrived in the early 1830’s, mainly a result from the 1808 Osage Indian cessation. Being highest upland of the Ozark Plateau, Webster County was organized in 1855 and designed in 1856. Marshfield sits at 1490 feet above sea level and boasts to be the highest positioned county seat in Missouri. The geography is quite a site, with the division between the Arkansas and Missouri Rivers. The area county have the luxury of many springs that originate in Webster, which disembark into four separate water ways. These water ways provided much economic opportunity for the settlers and continue today for vast opportunity. The Niangua River, Pomme De Terre River, and Osage Fork of the Gasconade north by east and contributes to the James River southwardly.

First Impressions
An expert guide to selling your home
First impressions are everything when it comes to selling a home. “Most people make up their mind whether or not they like a house within mere minutes of stepping foot inside,” explains Don Frommeyer, mortgage expert and CEO of The National Association of Mortgage Brokers. “That is why it is crucial to make sure that you (and your home) are putting your best foot forward.”
Here are the top Do’s and Don’ts for getting your home ready for the market: Don’t overdo it on the heat. “People tend to overcompensate when they know that potential buyers are coming to look at their home in the winter time. They crank up the heat to make the place warm

Cherry Blossom Festival The Missouri
Marshfield, Mo
The project of planting cherry blossom trees in the city of Marshfield, Missouri came about by a dream from a local resident, Nicholas W. Inman. Following an internship in Washington, D.C., he returned home, for he had become a little homesick. However, due to his love of our nation's capitol, he decided that it would be nice to bring just a small touch of Washington D.C. to his hometown, thus allowing everyone a chance to enjoy both worlds.
Jerry Jones: Soon, the cherry blossom project spread throughout the city. Numerous dignitaries have visited to plant trees, including; Jerry Jones (Owner of the Dallas Cowboys), Jean Carnahan (Former Missouri First Lady and United States Senator), Pat Wilson (Former Missouri First Lady), Betty Hearnes (Former Missouri First Lady), John and Hilda Lane (nephew of Dr. Edwin P. Hubble), Lesley Kays (Webster County Sesquicentennial Queen), along with several group plantings.

Time To Organize
C
urrent trending of lifestyles, whether it may be empty-nesters, first time home buyers or the economy, have left people with smaller spaces. There are several ways that you can maximize storage just by thinking ahead and taking steps to stay organized. A crucial rule to always follow when trying to conserve space is to give every item its own location. Yes, this may seem like an effortless task; however, how many of your
measuring cups or hair products are the exact way you had them when they were first organized? Take the extra time to conserve organization by storing them correctly, and you will be surprised how much time you will actually save when it comes to locating them. Arrange items by how often you use them by simply placing the items that are used most in the front. This will save time because you will know exactly where to find them without the hassle of digging to the back of the cabinet. To get the most out of your cabinets, use sliding shelves. Not only does this eliminate having to kneel and stretch to the back of the cabinet to reach that cake pan that fell behind everything else, but it gives you access to use every inch of space because with a simple pull, everything is brought to you. Everyone has those items that have not been touched in years and are the best dust collectors. It is time to decide what remains and what needs to be removed. This is often associated with closet clean outs, but every room can use an annual clean out. Clutter and lack of organization result from an excess of objects. This simple clean out will make a huge difference in maximizing space.

FROM THE
I
Mayor
t is a blessing to be seated as Mayor of Marshfield during a time when so many positive changes are taking place.
This year the city of Marshfield is preparing for major upgrades to our water and waste water utilities, we are preparing for the construction of a new Aquatic / Activity Complex, and making plans for an eight year renovation of our city square. Additionally, the community will face decisions this year that could open the door to several transportation infrastructure upgrades. The list of changes taking place in Marshfield is very long, and it is mostly due to a desire of the community to build a foundation for growth and development over the next twenty years. Our community has proven their willingness to make the right choices at the ballot box. The level of volunteerism is steadily growing, and people are engaging in efforts, and public meetings that will shape the Marshfield of tomorrow. We are a city in transition, we are “Out of the Box, and the change is good. Just as we are seeing forward movement at the city level, it is also evident in the business community. There are many new businesses in Marshfield that are providing necessary products and services that help to sustain a growing community. Our Chamber of Commerce, along with many other community organizations are working to improve on our already great community by promoting business, enhancing the appearance of our parks, and serving our citizens. I believe all these efforts and changes are complimented by the individual choices, we as Marshfield area residents make to support the businesses, organizations, and efforts that benefit Marshfield first. It is unavoidable that we must shop outside of our community on occasion, and when we are outside Marshfield, it is many times easier to go ahead and pick up those items that could be found at home; however, every dollar spent inside Marshfield serves the cause of Marshfield. Supporting business in Marshfield is a key element to doing what we can do today, in order to become the community we desire our children and grandchildren to inherit. Shopping local is an individual and intentional choice, and I am thankful to know so many in our community who are choosing to shop Marshfield first. There is no better life than Marshfield life. We have a proud heritage, and our future possibilities are becoming probabilities due to the choices of our community. Once again, I am blessed to share in the effort to pursue the best days of Marshfield, and honored to serve as Mayor,

Leveling the Playing Field
As the world of business moves evolves and gets more competitive it is difficult to keep up with both the changes in your industry as well as the innovations in sales, marketing and management strategies. Having a Business Coach isn’t fruitless want rather, it is a necessity your business must have.
Accountability is one of the greatest strengths of working with a Business Coach. Let’s be honest, it’s difficult to get a truly objective answer from yourself about your business, but your Business Coach will always tell you the truth, even if you don’t want to hear it. A Business Coach is better than a consultant for many reasons. With years of successful experience that can provide valuable insight, your Business Coach will help you develop long-term and short term goals and strategies, as well as improve your business in areas that you might have overlooked. You may be able to survive in business without the help of a Coach, but it’s almost impossible to thrive…
MMCB2015ChamberDirectory.indd 19
How healthy is your business right now… and how healthy do you want it to be? The first step in any turnaround is to orient your business, like anything in order to know where you’re going - You first need to know where you are. Our time tested business evaluations & coaching will do just that … in critical 4 areas, and will give you an idea of how you: • Manage your time • Manage your team • Manage your money • How well the systems you currently have in place help you run your business
Just as successful athlete, celebrity, seasoned professional or political figure. They rely on the same core principal, they all rely on a coach. It’s no different in the business world, regardless of your industry. Let’s begin working on your game plan and employ the latest to level playing field.

Home Secur覺ty
While it's difficult to protect your home from professional thieves, most home burglaries are done by amateurs. These thieves are more easily thwarted if you employ some of these simple security precautions:
R Plan to "burglarize" yourself. You'll discover any weaknesses in your security system that may have previously escaped your notice. R Lock up your home, even if you go out only for a short time. Many burglars just walk in through an unlocked door or window. R Change all the locks and tumblers when you move into a new house. R For the most effective alarm system, conceal all wiring. A professional burglar looks for places where he or she can disconnect the security system.

History, From Page 5
Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) was built through the town in 1872. These advancements catapulted the agricultural economy. Shortly after the expansion and economic shot in the arm, two tremendous natural disasters struck. As with any Ozarks town, we were struck with devastating tornadoes. The first strike was in 1878, only to affect a few local businesses. The second was adversely far more devastating. On April 8th, 1880 the massive twister claimed the lives of 99 people and leveling our endearing hometown. The natural disaster is still on the top 10 of most devastating in our country today. Even musical artist John Boone made a composition titled Marshfield Cyclone. In spite of these tragic event, our resilient citizens quickly rebuilt
our great city with the support from neighboring towns. Later in 1920 and 1921, we yet again endured back to back major fires. The vigor of its citizens yet again rose to the occasion, and was rebuilt to forge forward to prosperity. Marshfield also boast some of the best advancements in science our country has known in recent history. One of most notable persons, is no other than Astronomer Edwin P. Hubble, who attended primary school until the 3rd grade. Mr. Hubble later developed what NASA pointedly named the Hubble Telescope, and as tribute a replica of the Hubble telescope can be viewed in our quaint downtown square. Other notable events have been George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush who visited during his 1991 election campaign. Even Harry S. Photos: Julia Strong Truman thought enough of this wonderful area, that he paid a visit in 1948. See History Cont'd, Pg 35

One of our greatest traditions, is the Independence Day celebration. The historic event first began in 1879 and remains the oldest celebration west of the Mississippi River. The meager beginnings were comprised of local families by foot, horseback and wagons to an enormous grove north of town. Mainly to celebrate and reacquaint one another on the latest news. In more recent days, some of the festivities that can be enjoyed are, Annual Easter Egg Hunt, Cherry Blossom Festival, Farmers Market, Fiber Fair, Pow Wow, Truck and Tractor Pull, Independence Day Rodeo, ATV Rodeo, Demolition Derby, Annual Holstein Association Show, Business Expo, Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch, Harvest Days, Breakfast with Santa, Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony.

RR Your house should appear occupied at all times. Use timers to switch lights and radios on and off when you're not at home. RR If you lose your keys, change the locks immediately. RR Before turning your house key over to a professional house cleaner for several hours, make sure the person is honest and reputable as well as hardworking. Check all references thoroughly. If the house cleaner is from a firm, call your local Better Business Bureau to check on the firm's reputation. RR Instead of keeping a spare key in a mailbox, under the doormat, or on a nail behind the garage, wrap the key in foil -- or put it in a 35mm film can -- and bury it where you can easily find it if you need it. RR Don't leave notes for service people or family members on the door. These act as a welcome mat for a burglar. RR If the entrances to your home are dark, consider installing lighting with an infrared detector. Most thieves don't want to be observed trying to get in a door.
RR Talk to your neighbors about any suspicious people or strange cars you notice lurking about. RR To keep your tools from being stolen, paint the handles. Thieves avoid items that are easy to identify. RR Trees located near windows or shrubbery that might shield a burglar from view can be major flaws in your home-protection plan. Consider your landscaping plan in light of your protection needs. RR Ask for credentials from any salesperson who requests entry to your home. Ask that their ID be pushed under the door. Many professional burglars use this cover to check out homes. If you're doubtful, check with the person's office before letting him or her in. RR Do not list your full name on your mailbox or your entry in the telephone book. Use only your initial and your last name. RR If someone comes to your door asking to use the phone to call a mechanic or the police, keep the door locked and make the call yourself. RR Dogs are good deterrents to burglars. Even a small, noisy dog can be effective -- burglars do not like to have attention drawn to their presence. Be aware, however, that trained guard dogs do not make good pets. Obedience training and attack training are entirely different, and only the former is appropriate for a house pet.

Selling,
From Page 7 and welcoming,” says Frommeyer. “But that can backfire. The air will be dry and stale, plus the buyers will probably be too warm as they will be bundled up in coats. So keep the heat at a reasonable setting and have your humidifier set between 40-60 percent.”
Do consider curb appeal.
Do keep it bright. “Open all the curtains,” says Frommeyer, “Turn on all the lights, even if it is the afternoon. Replace all dead light bulbs. Crack open doors to the pantry or laundry room so people won’t be afraid to peek inside. And tidy up in forgotten places like inside the fridge or oven… people will be looking in there, and if they see mold or burnt food, they will be very turned off.” For more information, visit www.namb.org.
“Curb appeal is a huge draw for buyers, even in February,” says Frommeyer, “If you live in a cold state, consider creating a winter planter with cold-weather plants like winter berry holly or noble fir. At the very least, invest in a new doormat and keep the driveway clear of ice and snow. Warm lights glowing in the window will also be welcoming.”
Don’t expect people to use their imagination. “If you have a crazy color choice in one (or more) of your rooms, you might think that people will look past that,” says Frommeyer. “But that can prove difficult for buyers. Garish paint and wacky décor choices will make them uneasy, no matter how beautiful your home is underneath your collection of animal heads. Paint over those wild colors and put away any crazy items that might garner a laugh or a raised brow.”
Do invest in updates that matter. “People will pay top-dollar for homes with updated kitchens and bathrooms. If you can make even the barest improvements to these rooms, you will see a huge return. Update the yellowing tile in the bathroom or invest in new cabinetry. At the very least, purchase new shower curtains, bath rugs, and the like.” 2015 Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce Directory | 43

United Methodist Church and the Marshfield High School Alumni Association became part of the project. They began encouraging their members to purchase clumps of trees along the way. Today, the way is lined with numerous clumps that, once they mature, shall exhibit a breathtaking view during the blooming season. In the beginning, the Marshfield Rotary club purchased a large amount of small cherry blossom starts. Volunteers planted several cherry blossom trees on public property, and a series of promotions encouraged citizens to plant cherry blossoms on private property. We have quite a few trees planted throughout Marshfield, but would love to see more planted every year.
Mrs. Hearnes: At the urging of local residents, Inman formed the first "Cherry Blossom Festival Committee" for the 2006 blooming season. A group dedicated and faithful to the project was appointed, and they began work on an exciting opportunity for everyone who visits the city. The city of Marshfield will forever profit, due to a young man who dared to dream a little outside of the box.
Festival Flashback
The Missouri Cherry Blossom Festival is an annual threeday event in the spring that celebrates the city of Marshfield and the state of Missouri. Activities are varied and are scheduled throughout the event. There are opportunities for vendors to sell and customers to buy crafts, food, books and many other wonderful things. There are fun activities for the entire family and special speakers are brought in that are both entertaining and educational. People and events that have impacted our city, state, and nation are honored and remembered at a luncheon, dinner or special ceremony held during the three day event.

new categories — such as Best Food Challenge, Best Soup and Best Healthy Menu — and brought back a few old favorites from past contests, including Best Catfish. “We’ve all heard that every vote counts. If the voting this year is any indication, it’s as true for deciding rural Missouri’s finest as when we elect the president of the United States,” said Rural Missouri Editor Jim McCarty. “Whether by paper or electronic ballot, the votes came in by the thousands this year. When the polls closed in January and we began tallying the entries, we discovered we had some of the closest results ever in the contest’s history. We
want to thank our readers for their overwhelming participation.” Based in Jefferson City, Rural Missouri has been the voice of Missouri’s electric cooperatives since 1948. It has a circulation of more than 545,000, making it the largest paid-circulation monthly publication in Missouri. All of this year’s winners are featured in the April 2015 issue of Rural Missouri.
