The Alachua County Beekeepers Club would like to make the public aware that honeybees will be swarming in the next few months as they search for new homes. When you see the red maples starting to bud out in this area you can know the bees are out searching for new homes. Swarming tends to happen to the largest extent in the Feb through April timeframe in the Alachua Co area. Most folks are surprised to find 20-30 thousand bees hanging on a limb in their yard or on a picnic table, car bumper, stored boat, or anywhere else they can make a new home that is out of the weather. Some folks panic and call the exterminator the minute they see a bee. But, if you find a swarm of bees we ask that you call us so we can safely remove the bees. (386) 462-2637 We are trying to save our honeybees as they are in distress caused by many different factors. Local beekeepers are the first line of defense against these invaders. Get to know a local beekeeper or become one yourself. Without our precious honeybees our diets would become very bland as they are the major pollinators of just about every crop you can think of, and they add billions of dollars worth of pollination services for us all. If you have flowers or a garden on your property you can thank the pollinators for the crops you harvest. Our bee club welcomes everyone to visit with us and learn how you can help protect and save the honeybees and other pollinators in your own area. Everyone can be a part of the solution to the disappearing honeybee problems that can and will affect us all with higher food prices if they all disappear and we no longer have the pollination that they provide. Also, if you would like someone to do a live bee presentation at your child’s school, social club, or even your garden party, just give us a call and we will be happy to have someone come out and share information on protecting our honeybees. We suggest you save this issue for future reference just in case you find a swarm of bees on your property. You never know when a swarm can arrive and take up residence.
