he primary objectives of the University of Georgia Equine Programs are to enhance equine health and well being through research and education, and to disseminate information and outcomes of research to practicing veterinarians, research scientists, and equine enthusiasts and owners. In an ongoing commitment to equine health we have developed an Endowed Research Chair in Equine Studies. The first person to hold this chair is Dr. Steeve Giguère, an internist and world renowned research scientist whose research focus is immunity and infectious diseases, particularly as it relates to foals. The response to the symposium was overwhelmingly positive, with researchers openly sharing findings and ideas for additional studies. At the most recent Symposium held in Liverpool, England in 2008, UGA faculty and graduate students presented the results of nearly a dozen research studies on colic and laminitis. Animal Chiropractic Care:
Voodoo Magic Or just good ol’ science?
Most people think that chiropractic adjustments are just cracking your back and putting your bones “back in place”. But that’s not even close. A true chiropractic adjustment is fixing the vertebral subluxation complexes. Each joint in your body (and not just the big joints like your elbow… we’re talking the small joints between the vertebra too) has a plane of motion. And that plane of motion has a range of how far it moves. In many cases that movement is only 2 mm. But those joints can become “stuck” within that plane of movement. So while they aren’t out of place or dislocated, they are stuck or limited within their normal range of motion. And when they’re stuck, they can’t move to their full potential. And believe it or not, even being limited in your range of motion by 2 mm can have a HUGE effect on the rest of your body. When you think about it, the body is an amazing thing. It is really cool how well it all works and how smoothly everything runs when in balance. Think about it… how else could horses travel for miles on end without resting?! The biomechanics of their body has created a way for them to move effortlessly, spending very little energy. Yet, when there is a verterbral subluxation, the biomechanics are off. And even a slight change requires the animal to use more energy to do what they naturally do. Each little bit of energy used that isn’t normally required, takes away from the energy left to heal and do other life things. So, one way a chiropractic adjustment helps is to get the body back to its proper biomechanics as much as possible. This will allow the body to work how it’s supposed to. This will also help provide less energy used to provide movement and thus allow that much more energy for healing and mental health.

But there’s more magic with chiropractic care! And this is the super cool part. It works on your central nervous system. The brain doesn’t actually control your body, the spinal cord does. The brain just coordinates things. And the way the brain knows what to do is by all the information it receives. Your body knows where it is and what to do because it is constantly receiving signals from your entire body. Each nerve is sending signals back to the spinal cord and brain and then it gets signals back telling it what to do with that information. Did you know your nervous system can and does change daily!? It adjusts nerve pathways based on the information it receives. So when you have an animal that is sore and it starts to limp, the CNS receives the information about walking with the limp. The body can actually trick the CNS into thinking that is normal because the more it occurs, the more the pathways become stronger and thus more “normal”. So if your animal is limping for a while, the brain can actually think that walking with a limp is normal and adjust itself to do that. Meanwhile, this is messing up the biomechanics of the body and causing issues elsewhere. So…by adjusting the biomechanics back to normal, the input the CNS now gets is back to normal and the CNS can reset itself to the proper pathways. It’s called functional neurology and this is very simplified, but it really is cool stuff! So yep… chiropractic adjustments kind of are magic!! But it really is just science. Very cool science!
